It’s inspiring to listen to a police officer who understands the world on a more profound level than the letter of the law. I think that this guy actually cares about the well-being of both individuals and society. Good for him. I hope that the police force recognizes (and enforces) this standard of dignity and decency and intellect.
    He is someone special.

This man personifies this sentiment.." be kind or go away" What an emotionally intelligent human.
We had a corruption problem..after a sheriff went to prison..the new sheriff got rid of the corrupt and made all officers read the book "Emotional intelligence ". He served three terms.Poor guy got MS and had to retire. He changed that department by teaching his people how to respect others. Respect for all life might change the world.
Like the speaker im an optimistic person by nature, even though cynicism doth creep in when blood sugar goes low.

@@Readthis880buddy they take the L on a daily basis. These poor bastards make so many arrests on violent offenders and drug dealers it’s insane. And then once it goes to court the DA’s office drops the charges and try to rehabilitate gang members and dopers. That’s the true L. My brother is a police officer, just a few years in the game, and I truly hope he gains this kind of wisdom throughout his career. He’s an empathetic, caring dude, so he has that going for him, and I just really hope his career does more good than harm to his character. I’ve seen cops become shells of who they used to be because of the horrible things they see and deal with… and I’ve seen others like Jim who, even decades in, try their best to make a small difference every day, both on and off duty. Police departments need to prioritize officers’ mental health care. It is only with a clear view of the world that one can begin to change it. Thanks for your service, Jim ❤️💙

Wake up people. This guy complains about the way the courts discipline people yet every time he makes an arrest he knows the exact opposite will happen. The bottom line is policing requires you to ruin lives to POTENTIALLY save another. It’s always been unbalanced this way and people who sign up for that position KNOW THIS. For example policing the skid row area probably consists of harassing a bunch of low income people by writing them tickets and assessing fines. Exactly what a poor person doesn’t need. This cleaning of the streets has been deemed necessary because people don’t like the sight, so people acquire debt, because an authority figure has been designated to keep up an image.
So let me get this straight, because he wears a badge it’s perfectly acceptable for him to figure out the kinks in our system. But people who don’t wear a badge don’t get that same liberty. They will sit in front of a judge who’s default is to punish.
While I’m fine with policing people that affect others, most of the time “protect and serve” means how many speeding tickets can I write this month, single mom headlight tickets, and homeless disturbing the peace tickets and fines. It’s more important they follow the rules when it comes to assigning a felony to a young person than take accountability within their department. This guy works UNDERCOVER, meaning he is the worst kind of cop. He hides his identity to incarcerate people but where are the undercover department investigators.
If he knows locking people up doesn’t change them, why sign up for a job where that is the end goal? Hard to believe anything that comes out of his mouth when a guy signs up to “change the world” through FORCE and AUTHORITY.
LASTLY STOP TRYING TO MAKE POLICE SEEM SO SCARY AND DANGEROUS. ITS A FACT THAT BEING A COP IS ONE OF THE SAFEST JOBS IN AMERICA. IT ONLY TAKES ONE INCIDENT FOR A CIVILIAN TO LOSE THEIR LIFE AS WELL, WHY CANT PEOPLE BE SCARED OF COPS WHEN WE KNOW THEY HAVE WEAPONS AND CAN DO HARM TOO?! ITS SO DANGEROUS ON THE STREETS FOR THEM?! HOW MANY FELONIES HAS THIS GUY WILLY NILLY HANDED OUT? PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO HATE COPS UNTIK THEY HAVE THE SAME ACCOUNTABILITY. Not just “there are bad cops” how about our job requires us to be assholes for little to no reason and we gladly sign up for a pay check. Most laws they enforce are inherently based on government funding.
REMEMBER YOUR PLACE AS A PEACE OFFICER! Don’t ever forget you are more disliked than liked and every person you’ve locked up or fined should count as a life destroyed…..

That's why I think prevention is key! Youth programs as well as adult programs, especially in high risk areas, would probably be the most beneficial. It's easier to prevent a child from following certain behaviors than to change as an adult criminal. My heart goes out to kids who are raised in negative and traumatic environments. They don't have much of a chance.

He was incredibly intimidating and gave me a ticket for not buckling up fully before entering the road. I showed up to get a court date and discovered I had a choice of going into a courtroom right away & receiving a judgement-or waiting several months for my court hearing. Not knowing what to do….I called the police department to get an opinion!!! A female police officer answered the phone and gave me her most candid advice. She started out saying: “A little birdie told me…” and I’ll leave the rest to your imaginations. Needless to say, I’ll never forget that officer’s genuineness and willingness to help me with my decision.

Mark, these interviews are gold. In the past 5 years or so, it's become very popular to assume police officers are bad guys. It's good for people to hear from an average police officer.
I like his ideas for rehabilitation. Of course not for those who have committed horrific crimes, but more for the low risk convicts. Personally, I think prevention is key for nearly everything in life (programs for at-risk youth, parenting programs, adult programs), but at least more creative ways of dealing with convicts would be a huge improvement.

I wonder if cops realize that when they pull over the general population and are complete a-holes they turn the general population against them. At best wiser people will see them as a necessary evil to keep their neighborhood from being preyed on by criminals. There was very little support for the police during the whole BLM thing, probably because of this type of interaction. Its kind of the opposite strategy of the military's strategy of winning of "Hearts and minds." Granted the main stream media was also waging an all out propaganda campaign against the police.

It is hard to cope with the way this era handles truth. Our entire species has never lived in a world like this. It has really only been a few short years since the weird shift in communication. Yes cameras have been around and the news has been biased... but there is a weird addiction to outrage now...and the reality is being warped. Suddenly space is fake, the earth is flat, and police kill for sport... meanwhile reality is still there and people still have to actually do this job... it hurts that it is so popular to treat them like monsters. It is fantastic to hear a human like this speak truth without any hot sauce, clearly on the side of good things...
There are interesting problems to solve... as always. But I still feel good being a human.
