- Korg PS-3100 vintage polyphonic analog synthesizer demo. During a visit to the Vintage Synth Museum in LA, I had a chance to try the Korg PS-3100 analog synth. In this demo I briefly noodle and tweak some parameters to show some Korg PS-3100 sounds.
The Korg PS-3100 was released in 1977 and has 48-voices of polyphony via 12 divide-down oscillators. The Korg PS-3100 has 2 LFOs, Resonator, multiple envelopes, Ensemble effect, patchbay, 3-band EQ, 12 scaling controls for intonation control, 48 keys and CV/Gate connections.
The Korg PS-3100 is very rare as apparently only 600 were manufactured. It's successors the Korg PS-3200 and PS-3300 had even more capabilities. The sound is very rich and warm, and is excellent for nice brassy tones. Hope you enjoy the demo.

Thanks. There's not a lot of demos with clean direct sound of these rare beasts.
You're welcome!
@@synth4everyes... thank you. It's outstanding
One of best synths Korg has ever produced! 🎛 🔈 🔉 🔊
I would argue, one of the best synths ever made, period.
Both Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono had one of these in their personal arsenal. You can hear it on Hosono's Cochin Moon and YMO's debut album, especially on the track Simoon.
Very cool, thanks for the info!
Thanks 🙏🏾 for doing this I always wondered what this beast sounded like
Yes, me too!
There's a rare bird, the more videos the better. Sounds somewhat like their PE synths at times, but different too.
Thanks Alex, glad you enjoyed the demo. :)
It's quite a thin sound, on the face of it. The patch panel obviously unlocks lots of potential.
@@baward Yeah, kind of fizzy and nasal. I can see why the ensemble is there.
But, as you say, the juicy stuff lies in the patch panel.
The sound of this things ... I would love one of this 10 tims more than a CS-80
Soundin' a bit like Tony Banks there!
Hehe... I wish ;)
Wonderful ! Amazing !
Thank you!
fascinating to finally hear, thank you. relieved it's not gorgeous sounding.
At the beginning of, there was the sound of ‘video killed the radio star’ . Not sure what they used, but this has that sound. So nice
It is a nice sweet sounding synth for sure!
For classical musicians, this is the opportune synth
0:33 wow that filter enveloppe !
This demo devotes 4 seconds per note of polyphony. Franky, I don't think that's enough - this synth deserves more! I... I didn't see any patch cables in use. Haven't you wondered how that works with a polyphonic synth? I sure do! (I know, I figure this is just an intro demo. I'm looking forward to more)
I didn't have a ton of time so wanted to shoot what footage I could!
the demo was too short! I want more!
I didn't have much time so got what I could!
Very nice demo. I don't think that the use of divide-down technology really affects the sound that much at all, as it only has any impact when playing octaves. The rest of the time, you're listening to separate analog vco's beating against each other just as you would in any other analog synth (there are 12 separate analog vco's, one for each top octave pitch). This is very different from the way the electric organs derived the top octave all from one initial crystal oscillator frequency, by dividing by fixed integers to get each of the scale pitches, then successively dividing each pitch by 2, to get the octaves below. Also remember that since it has just one sound source per key, it obviously won't sound as thick as a "regular 2-VCO per voice" synth...which is why you need get the Korg PS-3300 ;-)
Great demo:) What was this connected to as it's output?
Thanks, just a Zoom H5 portable recorder
I had one of these, I was early teenager, wanted a synth.. beginning of 80's cant say for sure but by then I didn't have any knowledge how to make those sounds. it was second handed my parents wasn't rich but still they bought it for around 900 dollars worth at that time, it was a lot of money. ( they sold an apartment for 3500 US) at this time so they could afford. so after some time the poly 800 came out, some budget machine.. but so easier with buttons...so I got that one as well... then I put this old machine in the basement for many years...I think in the beginning of 2000 a guy searched for this one and I sold it... my biggest mistake but he paid 2000 dollar's.. I wish I had it today.. but oh well. I remember the guy who sold it to us said a guy named Peter Gabriel had one of this...Even if I wasn't good in making music.. I knew this thing was full polyphonic while others wasn't. Thanks for showing it again to me :) it reminds me of my parents.. RIP mum and dad. they did all for me.
Lucky you used to have one, thanks for sharing your story. It's still very sought after today!
How the hell do you use 48 note poly, I get you can stack, but that's a ton of notes for such an early creation.
Is it 1 oscillator sub divided into 12, times 4 making it 48 notes?
I am confused, maybe I'll ask the Nutty Professor above lol.
The Waldorf Streichfett has 128 note polyphony. Sounds amazing.
Divided down oscillators, but a filter, amp and envelope per key would you believe! The thing is stacked full of voice cards and yet that's nothing compared to the PS-3300.
@@expandingknowledge8269 yeah I had one, but felt I was overusing it and decided to sell, regretful but I can live without it.
@@AlexBallMusic It's amazing these things were made when competitors had 2, 4 or only 5 voice back then.
Unheard for analog.
sounds like a prophet
Yea, pretty brassy at times -- but also has the sweet Korg sound
Instant Aphex Twin 😊
Originally this range of synth from korg wasn't a great success because of its divide down technology. Which made the oscs sound weak. But they do sit in an area not occupied by others
Yes they have a nice sweet tone to them!
Ensemble off…?!
sounds like FEZ 🤗
:)
it'a a big organ
Kind of yeah, it's a cross between a synth and a "combo ensemble", which is an organ/stringer type of keyboard. All the potentiometers and patch points make it more fun than the usual home organ... unless that had an Orbit and rhythm machine! (Just kidding - those were really cheesy too)
This synth has a hypnotic sound. Needs a better keys player
