  • Steiner-Parker Synthacon vintage analog synthesizer demo. This demo of the rare Synthacon mono synth from Steiner-Parker features various sounds and tweaking. Filmed at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles, CA.
The Steiner Parker Synthacon is a rare monophonic analog synthesizer produced in 1975-1979. It features 3 VCOs, white & pink noise generator, sample & hold, portamento, 2-pole resonant lowpass/bandpass/highpass filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, trigger generator, 49 keys, and a ton of signal routing via numerous switches.
Only a few hundred Synthacon synthesizers were produced, according to designer Nyle Steiner. It's capable of nice sounds of course, but it excels at chaotic and crazy modulations, squelches, ring mod tones, noises and has an extremely potent filter with resonance. The legacy of the Steiner-Parker Synthacon's filter design lives on today in some modular synth designs as well as some Arturia products.
It was a lot of fun to try the Synthacon and tweak it, as all the switches make it very interactive for quick signal routing. If you have the opportunity to try one, don't pass it up!

There are moments where this sounds like early Roland SH synths and others where it sounds like a musical fart machine. I love that the filter design found it's way into the Arturia Microbrute.

Yea, the filter is awesome on this synth! It will live on...

Arturia Microbrute is far away the real filter sounds. Because electronics are far more cheap and worst inside. The real design starts with good material. As you do with food if you clever.

@@shatva Perhaps, although the physics of electricity remains the same. If you can build a 3mm resistor with the same value as vintage 20mm resistor, the effect on the signal chain should be the same.
After having a microbrute for several years, and using it alongside many vintage synths, I can tell you it is a solid instrument with a very excellent filter. It has a very creamy sweet spot if thats your thing, but it excels at crunchy, grungy, MS-20-esque tones.

@@lo-firobotboy7112 Esque! Depend on how you push the boundaries. If want to be unique, like prodigy or fluke, or massive attack crystal method done at 90ies, this esque would be a joke! I repaired and self modded a lot of vintage samplers, analogs synths, preamps, tube electronics, mics etc. Unfortunatelly should tell you that even a simple resistor sounds different! My Arp odyssey mk 1 redesigned a lot, the ota filter inside made a lot difference with one resistor at the feedback resonance circuit! Just one resistor! The old tube wizards tell you the same. Doulgas Self in small signal audio book measured noise too. SMD resistors are instable and do a lot of bad thing too, simply because of the heat stress of little mass got. The same happening with ceramic capacitors.. The capacitors TYPES in many places change the sound of the instrument too. Ceramic, mkt, mkp, tantalum, electrolyte the all have different features and roles on the instruments! Not just lower the noise and make more dynamics and headroom of the synth, but make it sounds better too. There is a lot of thing cumulating here, the end of that shit oscillator came from amateurish designed synth and the filter do the same shit aftor you bring resonance! There is oblivion about electronic designers too! The legend created by pioneers, not just a bunch of school guys. They not even think about deeply enough and do a lot of ground loops, let digital noise come in the audio path. As you told about sweet spot. MS 20 with an original filter does not have sweet spot. Everything sound sweet. You can check out my yamaha cs 15 sounding in my channel after i moded. Track: Air Bender, Dancing Electrons

This is literally the sound of 70s scifi movies. I feel like it sounds more like that than other synths of the era. Its got that really mechanical, robotic sound. Probably the filter. So cool!

Nice demo, classic stuff! Really shows off the interesting filter. This is one of my wish list synths, which may actually be a potential purchase because they are being re-released. I used the Synthacon for inspiration when I helped design the UI for a Eurorack synth panel based on the Oberheim SEM circuits.

When I saw the word Synthacon, I immediately thought of Knobcon and was welcoming another synth fest. No what I got instead was a synth created by the guy who created the Steiner-Parker filter that populates many Arturia synths.
The fact you got to play one and document it.
Things like this are not exotic, vintage sports cars, given only a few hundred were ever made, how this still exists is beyond me.
Servicing them would be a nightmare as parts would not even exist anymore.
I would hate to own one, OCD would be going into overdrive for fear of failure.
    Thx for the upload.

This era of synths used individual components, resistors, capacitors, transistors that are still available. Later synths that used custom chips are a different story!

Hahaha THIS THING! Wow, it's not just wild, but it also comes up with things outside what i'd consider normal subtractive. It has a real knack for making humorous sounds too, somehow. Theres gotta be a little creature in there.
