  • Dr. Garcia demonstrates the after care instructions we give to patients who have had a blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. These are instructions are for either upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.
    Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the area around the eyes and is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. This procedure eliminates excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids to correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes. In some cases, eyelid surgery may also improve vision if the excess skin in the upper eyelid area is hindering vision. The eyes are the first features we notice when looking at someone. Because of this, they are usually the first place where the signs of facial aging are noticed.
There are mainly two issues that lead to the aged or tired appearance in the eyes:
    • Excess skin that causes the loss of the crease in the upper eyelid and can drape over the eyelashes if it is severe. Excess skin in the lower eyelids can lead to a “crêpe” or wrinkled appearance to the lower eyelid.
    • Bags around the eyes are generally due to fatty pockets falling forward through an aged or weakened wall called the septum.
