Can you outline what the real world risks are for using a smartphone that's not getting security updates - how serious a problem can it be? The OS update have usually been an anti-climax for me, but security is a worry - are the threats real ?

While I understand your point, I don't expect to use a $400 phone for decades. One upgrade is enough for the length of time I expect to use this phone. Good value overall.

I just bought this phone. Yes, getting updates is important, but man the phone just works. The chipset appears to be just right for its software. It doesn't get hot and I can go 1.5 day with one charge. I dont do a lot of gaming, but I use it as my back up for work on a bunch of communications apps, so I am on it frequently. Its light and the back cover is great to the touch. The screen...man I love it. Overall....9.0/10.

As someone who shops in this exact segment, I wrestle with this issue every time I start looking for a new phone. But one thing I have came to the realization of is I almost always am in the market for a new device before I ever reach E.O.L. for whatever current phone I'm using.
I know my use case is probably different than many, but that's the best argument I can make as to why Moto hasn't revised their software update policy yet. They have numbers that I'm not privy to, and they must have come to the conclusion that it's a better strategy to keep (arguably)better hardware on their G Stylus instead of offering longer support since the majority of people end upgrading their devices before the 2 year mark.

It still has 5 years of security update support. Maybe the OS itself won’t evolutionist so much for the phone but at least it’ll remain protected long enough to save for a good flagship phone over time. And honestly you can tell already that much changes won’t need to be made

I was yelling the exact same thing as I was watching this video. The last few (and probably any future) android versions have not given us anything earth shattering.
This phone ships with android 14 and will probably update to 15 next year and will get security updates for another few years. That is just fine.
I am a cheap fuck and I hold on to my phones for YEARS. Until they just don't work anymore and I have never kept a phone longer than 3 years. After 3 years the charging ports fail, the battery life has deteriorated and probably there is a crack on the screen. Time to replace anyway.
Sure, I'm buying "budget" phones but they do what I need and I can replace them 2, 3, or even 4 times and still have spent less than a top of the line samsung or iphone.

So long as everything still works I'm not sure the updates are such an issue. Too many times a major update has made my phone worse IMO and then it's really hard to revert back or you have no security software support if you do. For a midrange device like this better to have stable functionality than the odd new feature. This is relying on android 15 being good of course.

See, glad you see it from some smart people standpoint.
Those who complain about a cheaper but reliable phone like Motorola don't understand it, do they. Nope.
Those who complain about no OS update, are the same who want new phone. Shit go Samsung or Pixel. Saving is the name of the game. Motorola done that in the beginning. Well not really, there are others in the market but Motorola has been more reliable than other Chinese brands.
I don't go buying new release Motorola phone though, I wait a bit. Wait for some deal or price drop. My Edge 2022 with the same OS has been very reliable and even the last 2020 Motorola Stylus was a badass, have to have this Edge because I needed speed back then.

Some nice features in this phone! People that don't know/care about android updates, or maybe really loyal Motorola fans, may be attracted to this phone, due to those features and the software and hardware quality. But I think it will be an easier sell when this price drops a bit. I loved my Motorola G(8) Power (2020), but once security updates ended for it, I wasn't considering a similar Motorola replacement for my daily driver because of their history of sparse android and security updates (although I did also buy the ThinkPhone, for which more updates were promised (we'll see!)).

This is a great phone and possibly the best Stylus phone that Motorola has made yet. They needed to add a higher IP rating and extended software support at least a little bit and this phone would’ve been perfect. Even with those cons, I’m considering getting this phone. The point isn't people keeping the phone for seven years, although more people than you think do. As long as it keeps basic functionality, a large group of people are happy. Longer software updates help that. In addition, it helps resale value, a phone still in software support fetches more than one that is no longer supported. Why are so many people NOT in favor of more support? Other companies offer it, so should Moto, it doesn't hurt anyone and should be pointed out. More support is always going to be better.

You can get these through prepaid carriers for cheaper at least, bought my current 2021 Stylus 5G for $149 when it launched ($399 retail) I'm just waiting for my carrier to get the 2024 model especially since security updates ended for the 2021 model. 2024 Stylus looks like a nice upgrade specs wise.

For a phone that costs $250 or less, unlocked and brand new (at the time of writing this anyways) I don't feel like 1 major os update and 3 years of security is a huge disappointment. I've never had too good of an experience with multiple big OS updates on phones running lower end hardware anyways, it almost always causes much undesired lag. Obviously, this is just me personally and I'm sure some people are planning to keep it for years, but I usually don't keep a phone longer than two years even if it's a flagship. Good review though

Sorry bud. But most people don’t care about the always on display and that major upgrade beyond one. I mean it’s a $300 phone man. What do you want for it. That’s nothing. The phone is practically free, and otherwise great. I can’t stand that always on display, it’s annoying and drains your battery.

I’ve watched a few videos on this phone so far. And I’ve heard 3, 4 or 5 years of security updates. I have no idea who’s right or not 😂 but maybe the lack of support is due to this phone just being a stepping stone for an even better version of the moto g stylus coming soon? Within the next year or two? It’s a great phone, I wouldn’t be able to see why they aren’t headed towards turning this into a flagship phone. Especially considering how good this product is

I've been using Android 11 on my Moto G Stylus 2021 for years without issue.
I always install a security app though (on any phone).
To me its not a huge deal to not have updates for a new Android version.
Plus phones don't last forever, you tend to replace then after a few years.
I'm upgrading to a new phone this year but I could care less about Android updates.

Right on, as usual, Steve! With the sorely lacking support, the entire package is soured. With adding the P-OLED @ 1200 nits, 8GB RAM, OIS on the main lens, & wireless charging, Moto has finally addressed all the deficiencies, and the market so desperately needs a budget stylus phone! It's simply baffling to me why Motorola just won't stand up and commit to supporting their phones for 5 yrs!!! It would only help their bottom-line. 🤦🏼‍♂️
