    A lot of people don't realize that Charles Grodin and Johnny Carson were very good friends and this was kind of an act that Charles would show up in disdain and they both would play poker at Johnny's house with Steve Martin and Chevy Chase and some others.

      I took my 14 year old brother to manchester to the pictures when we were kids in the 80's. Came home on the train together laughing together back to bolton.
      The other day I watched it with my eleven year old son.
      Trying to mute the swear words a bit.
      We had a laugh riot on the sofa.

    Letterman has better chemistry with Grodin

    • @MatsThyWit
      @MatsThyWit 3 роки тому +4

      They both had good chemistry. Letterman was better at leaning into the awkward banter. Carson was a little too old school in his comedy sensibilities, he couldn't help winking at the audience to let them know it was a joke. Letterman let the audience buy into the idea that Charles Grodin hated him. He seemed to like being a punching bag for Grodin.

    • @lynnturman8157
      @lynnturman8157 3 роки тому +1

      I agree. The truth is Grodin's schtick unnerved Johnny. You can tell Johnny's not enjoying it because he doesn't laugh much with Grodin. With guests he finds funny, he laughs his ass off.

    • @watchman1178
      @watchman1178 3 роки тому +2

      @@MatsThyWit Yeah, you nailed it. This kind of irreverent comedy began around the time SNL got started. Carson understood exactly what Grodin was doing, but it still made him a little uncomfortable because he wasn't used to it. Letterman, OTOH, knew all-too-well the art of irreverent comedy.
      That being said, I liked Grodin's appearances on Johnny's shows more than the one's with Dave. Johnny's discomfort was hilarious, as were most of his counter punches.
