Grodin lived a good long life... died in 2021 at the age of 86. Johnny died in 2005 age 79. Johnny was born in 1925 and Grodin in 1935. It's so great they can now live on amusing countless others on the Internet. Johnny took over The Tonight Show from Jack Paar in 1962. My mom, who died in 2002 at age 74, like millions of other Americans, spent 40 years enjoying Johnny on late night TV. It really became a ritual for her. What a glorious era!!
love it that CG challenged Johnny Carson, Johnny proved his wit so many times over the twenty odd years, he is sharp sharp, of course it takes two to tango!! Thanks Charles Grodin for so many intellectually driven and witty laughs, just heard he died.
When Johnny's job was no longer fun, he packed it in. The Tonight Show was and always will be Carson's. He could talk with a farmer, a school teacher, royalty or hollywood celebrities and it didn't matter, because people tuned in to see Johnny. His humor, wit, timing, warmth and an intelligence level rivaled every talk show host before him and since him, Johnny Carson will always be The King of Late Night Television.
What a combination, what a team. They worked so well together. Grodin with his dead pan delivery and Carson with that sharp wit. This is Classic. It's timeless. They nailed it every time Carson had him as a guest. Many viewers at the time actually believed that Grodin was being antagonistic toward Carson. They didn't get that it was a running bit between them.
Grodin was an incredible guest. He does punchlines, but also does very well as a set up man for Johnny, or Dave, or whatever talk show he was on. Just fantastic.
Leno and Letterman also great....even Ferguson and Kilborn were fun....none of current hosts worth watching. Need to rely on bleeps because wit is lacking.
@@tnargskoorb1I only saw it recently and really liked it. The only thing I’m confused about is what bounty hunters are allowed to do. I didn’t get that whole deal but the double act between Grodin and DeNiro is amazing.

@@tylernewton7217 Ha ha it sure was. I like when Deniro is telling the bondsman guy on the phone he’ll shoot Grodin in the head and dump him in the swamp. Then he shakes his head at Grodin like no I won’t.
I laid on the living room floor every night watching Johnny. I think this was the best comedic 12 minutes and fifty-one seconds clip I have seen. Two greats. And I think their is a bit of Andy Kaufman feeling going on. Thank you for sharing. Sweet sorrow.
Did Charles Grodin get along with Johnny Carson? Johnny Carson liked him so much that he put Grodin under contract as a guest in 1973. He would appear once a month, to the exclusion of all other talk shows. Their imitation of mutual hostility was so convincing that the programme always received letters of complaint about Grodin's shabby treatment of his host.
Carson had Grodin on 36 times because he was good TV, and that was Carson's first priority. We always looked forward to Grodin. A nervous and agitated Carson was the most honest and funny Carson. He's quicker and funnier with Grodin than he was in 1962 when he first took over The Tonight Show.
I remember in college seeing the original airing. This was really something special. These guys were doing "irony," "breaking the 4th wall," and "meta" years and years before those were things; making a mockery of the format, while still operating within it's conventions. I feel so privileged to have lived through the era when it was first being done. Now it's all water-downed self-aware braindead 'silly', and worst of all cute. (how can anyone stomach Fallon or Colbert after seeing this?) It's sad that so much mainstream tv never got better (talk shows, sitcoms). Thank god for long-form podcasts, HBO, Netflix etc.
Grodin is a genius and he + carson play this game very well. Grodin fortunately passed his great deadpan humor to Letterman. Too bad he has not been a guest there for a quite some time. Still this is Late night television at its best.
these guys are ozing with real sweet charm and intelligence , somehow that kind of world-class integrity is not around anymore ; we started losing that in the nineties , then it just dried out completely .
If I make it to the Lord when this life is over, I'm thinking that I want one of my requests to be is to see Johnny do a live show and with Charles being his special guest. I love ❤️ these two.

Dennis -- they actually did not like one another
Harpoon_Bakery bullshit; this is Grodin’s schtick. He carried it onward to Letterman.

Turned me off. I don’t think Johnny cared for it much either. His demeanor changed.
Charles was one of THE best guest on Carsons show...
You can tell both of them are enjoying each other very much!
Comic gold! 🤗
This is why I watch Johnny Carson every night of my life growing up before I went to sleep.
Me too Mike! Even in grade school we were allowed to watch Johnny's monologue and then off to bed. Good memories. Peace buddy
"I'll alert the media." I just about died when Johnny said that.
Grodin is my favourite for deadpan humour. And Carson's versatility is extraordinary.
I have always loved Grodin he makes me laugh so much even if I'm not loud laughing because others sleeping I'm still laughing hard so damn funny.
It's the best, Bad.
Grodin is the early version of Norm MacDonald
Grodin versus Carson, we need more people like this on late night. lol. classic.
That's exactly what there doing huh. It's funny because they get each other good. Carson jumps to Rich malibu because he's caught.
Grodin keeps setting them up and Carson keeps hitting them out of the park.
Grodins dry humor cracks me up and Johnny is the perfect host and flos right into character for guest.
Johnny was sharp as a tack that night.

This has to be twelve of the funniest minutes in TV history. Two comedy legends at the top of their game.

two very bright and witty comedic minds "going at it."

These two were marvelous together
This is amazing he’s been like this for decades, what a great act these two had!
This is part of Grodin’s droll act, his spiel. It was part of the banter that he had with Johnny, who was in on it. I have his book. It’s quite funny.
I have the book on my shelf in my study.
It would be so nice if it wasn't there
They both have droll measured humor and their timing was always spot on...
The knuckleheads running the night shows these days could never touch Carson with a 10 ft pole. Just epic.

Wish SOMEONE could be as good as him again!
true
Grodin gave some of the best deadpan!!
Charles Grodin will be missed. Brilliant dead pan, droll comic with perfect timing.

I must agree. I Have to live with the memory. At least we have 'the best of'.
