Josh is about the only RV dealer willing to discuss trailers at their maximum weight, not what trailers have under 5,000 pounds dry weight like most (including many manufacturers) dealers and salespeople do. A huge kudos to the RV Nerd for doing it right-again.
Josh: You've definitely hit the mark with this list of SUV towable trailers. It's a nice mix of RV's with slideouts and no slideouts. Everyone one of them is the PERFECT trailer for someone. Good job. Respectfully W.S.
Yep! Newer rangers (2019 and up) have 7500lbs towing capacity. I've got a 2015 Jayco jayflight slx 184bh. Love it! But would love a little more space. Just don't want to tow something super long but know my truck can handle something a little heavier than most SUVs.
Man Josh, I'm glad you made this video. This was us at the start of our RV adventure. We started with a large SUV and it moved our RV safely, but not comfortably. We were fortunate to have enough money left in the budget to buy a 2500 diesel truck. But, many people can't. This is a great video! Thanks!
My wife and I bought a Wildwood FSX 161 QKT after seeing your video on it and the local dealer actually having one in stock. We looked at it because of the rear bedroom and no slide. We love the camper and so do our 2 cats who love to go camping with us. It is perfect for the two (four) of us. We probably wouldn't have found this model without your videos. Thank you for the heads up on this floorplan!!
I don't think Bish carries them, but the Rove Lites by Travel Lite, are all under 2750 GVWR. I have a 2023 14BH, and live in it full time. I'm only having buyer's remorse because the 2024 models, to include a few new floorplans, have much bigger grey and black tanks. All 2023 and newer models are equipped with Tucson Sway Control, which utilizes sensors on the trailer frame to detect sway, and apply brakes on the appropriate side to keep the trailer in line with the tow vehicle. Also the newest year models are equipped with 12v rooftop AC, rather than a standard window unit installed through the side wall. My unit had a dry weight at delivery of just under 1900 pounds. Upgrading to a rooftop AC, while moving the fan from the main area to the bathroom, is a priority for me. It was 96* here in South Texas today, and my little 5000 BTU AC kept it just tolerable, though not comfortable.
Our first tow vehicle was a 2001 Explorer and we towed a ~3K trailer with a 450 lb tongue weight. Even though we were well within towing specs for the Explorer the tongue weight did take a lot of weight off of the steering axles. Being a body on frame vehicle there was no issue with using a weight distributing hitch to restore weight back to the front. The same cannot be said for many unibody SUVs on the market today. As the tongue weight gets heavier it will shift weight from the steering axles so weight will need to be restored to safely tow the trailer. As a result owners of SUVs need to not only run the various weight calculation but they need to verify with the SUV manufacturer that the vehicle supports a WDH. If not they need to look into something with very low tongue weights like a popup/tear drop or consider upgrading their vehicle.
You forgot the one we are in the process of buying! FR Surveyor Legend 19RBLE. We were tired of the pop up trailer we’ve used for 10 years. I’m tired of crawling over my husband in the middle of the night to go outside to use the outhouse. Tired of loading and unloading. Tired of cranking it up and putting everything together. Getting too old for that. This model is perfect! Walk around full queen bed. Door away from bed. Slide out dinette (or there is a couch and bar option). Tall enough for hubby and not too tall for me. (I’m under 5’2” and couldn’t reach the push lights on the ceiling in some models we looked at) Unfortunately the original camper we reserved was destroyed by a tornado in Ohio the next day so we’re waiting for our new one😢 Anyway this will be great for our tough little Xterra to pull!!
30:57 YES! This video was awesome but that midsize part 2 video would be useful. I don’t have kids so personally a bunk house isn’t for me but I like that you mixed it up
Uncle Josh, something that might be worth noting on this topic is to know if your mid sized SUV is on a unibody frame. Weight distribution hitches are generally not recommended on unibody frame vehicles. I see a lot of people making this mistake on RV forums online.
This is exactly the video i was hoping you would do !!! Thank you so much! The GeoPro, the Wildwood Fox Socks Xylophone 179 and the Minnie are nice ones to me! Thanks for showing some options for people who don't have the biggest tow capacities. Nerd Herd Representative from NY signing off ! Take care, stay safe, have fun, and happy camping to you too!
I’m so glad you called out single parents!! That’s what I’m working with so I love and appreciate that you called that out!! This whole video feels like it was made for me! I love all your content.
Thank you so much for this video and resources. I have a 21 Subaru ascent and it’s bogged my brain trying to decide options. This is much appropriate- viewer from CT
Thank you for all your hard work on RVs!!! I would LOVE another video featuring RVs towable by "higher/loaded" SUVS such as older (pre-battery operated vehicles politics) Chevy Tahoes loaded with Towing packages & Half-ton Towables... AND the RV has Dual Axles... 🙏❤🙏
I like this video and the smaller models . I have 2 trucks one is an 08 pathfinder 6k rated and a 15 F150 4x2 supercab std bed with only 5k rated ... I would small for less stress and I would like a tandem axle lol I know I want the world lol
The counter space in the Apex 17R is pretty impressive. I had to chuckle at the mini-mirror in the bathroom though...'here's a little rv, and we're gonna give you a little mirror to go with it' :) I really like its design and solar package. The oval windows give it an alien vibe, so its an automatic win imo!
Thank you for this! This year I will be looking for a travel trailer under 5,000 lb GVWR that I can tow with my 4Runner. I appreciate you doing a video that shows some options for the SUV crowd. 👍
I appreciated this video, especially learning at the end that you drive a Ford Maverick like myself. Such a great utilitarian "little truck" that does everything well. I would love to see a video about what RVs are available for us down at the 4,000lb limit as well; it seems like the biggest obstacle is the 400lb hitch weight limit, as it seems like many I have researched (proper queen-width bed or dual twin/king convertibles) may be 3,000lbs dry but have a 450lb hitch weight or more.
My wife and I had to sell everything so now we need a teardrop that is around 1200lbs max if we are able to do anything. But being disabled I'm just going to live thru UA-cam lol. Keep up the great work you do.
Love it Josh!!! I would watch the 1/2 ton group video and would appreciate it as well. But, how about you do a video for something towable by a Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee? What would you consider safe to tow with a short wheel base and possibly down old bumpy dirt roads? I appreciate your videos and all the information you provide. I get more from your side tracks sometimes than the main topics so keep doing what you're doin'... Thanks, Pat
Man! You're the BEST! Since I own a Tacoma and watching a lot of videos about it's towing capabilities this is a great video and you are super entertaining
Love this video. We have a half ton but enjoy these 3-5k trailers because they have the basics covered dor the family but they are more comfortable to tow.
I really appreciate all the information I’m currently looking for something but not sure what route i want to go yet even when I had my other camper I still watched this channel to keep up to date on the industry. Keep up the good work
Yes please, RV's for midsize truck towing. Would love to see dual-axle models that can be pulled by well equipped midsize trucks like the Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado. I leave out the Toyota's and Nissan's because there payload and towing capabilities are low and better suited for single axle models..
Great video. Would like to see a pop-up and hybrid video. Would like to see if they have kept up with modernization compared to full body campers. Ty. Great job you do.
1) Great video Josh. Seems like all the RV’s out there requires a 3/4 or 2 ton dually. It’s nice that you had condensed these by a smaller SUV category. Makes it easier on the customer to sort through the noise. 2) To answer your question…. YES!!! Please do make a video of campers that can be towed by a mid-sized truck such as a Chevy Colorado. 3) Then while you are at it, you might as well create one for trailers that can pulled by late model half tons such as my 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD with a 6L. 4) Of course if you are going to go through all of that trouble, then you might as well make one categorizing ones that newer half tons can be pulled by as they are built differently now. 5) But let’s not their bigger brothers of 3/4 & 1 ton dually be left out of the equation here neither. Basically I have just given you job security for awhile here brother. I’m sure that your wife will be grateful for the future paychecks to spend 😆 6) But last and not least; I think a very interesting video would be for you to visit the only Bish’s store that rents units and report on the best way to rent. Either a video by you alone or a different video where you interview the person who does the renting and teach us potential newbies the best way to rent and what to look for so that we don’t get taken. How it is important to rent first if you’ve done this before so that you don’t make a mistake that will cost you $10’s of thousands of dollars. While I that there are some costs involved, I believe that the industry is making a big mistake of not getting into the rental business. They don’t have to use new units for this. They can get their rental inventory from the used units that people trade in. My plan is to eventually rent numerous times. This will allow me to see if this is the lifestyle that I want to do, as well as see what type that I want to buy, travel trailer, class C? I think a rental video would be very informative. 37) But until next time…. “Take care, stay safe, have fun, and happy camping everyone!”
2.) Thank you! 6.) We really dont do a lot of rental. Salt lake is about the only place with rental as I recall I think places like rvshare are some of the best places to do that right now
I know you don’t, but I believe the industry is missing out on a big segment which would eventually lead to future sales due to the relationship with the customer.
Здравствуй, добрый человек. Смотреть твои видео огромное удовольствие. Ты делаешь очень хорошие видео с огромной информацией. Это большой труд. Здоровья тебе и счастья.
You made this for me and my family! Great options but sadly none work for us other then towing capability. So with that I say yes to the 7500 and below options. Because all the ones we're interested in have a full weight just over 5000 or up to 6000.
Josh. I would like to see similar videos on travel trailers that can be pulled safely with the 2024 GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado. The only engine available is the 2.7 turbo with towing capacity of 7,700 lbs. Also the considerations of using this vehicle to pull up hills, heavy winds, ability to stop safely going down, etc.
Once again thank you for quality useful information!!! We are about to payoff our Riverside Retro and move up to something a bit more roomy. Lots of possibilities here!!!
Thank you for covering this topic, great 👍 info as always - as a person I know once said there's a toilet seat out there for every *** Yes 5500 lb would be a great video as well
Thanks for the video! I have been planning for a travel trailer dream for years. Reasons for not pulling the trigger yet all comes down to money. I don't want to have to make a vehicle payment and a trailer payment. I got a 2015 ford explorer 2x4 fwd, my tow capacity is only 2k. So I've been putting money into getting my vehicle tow ready. I got hitch installed. I want to get a tran/engine cooler and suspension air bags. It's been a slow process but I love your videos and I appreciate you replying to all my questions. Thanks!
Great video - thanks! We have a heavy 30' travel trailer now and a 1/2 ton truck. Would like to downsize to a little lighter/smaller trailer so this was a very informative video. Would like to see some 1/2 ton towables as well.
All I can say is don't do it in a 2nd gen highlander. Also have heard horror stories with the 3rd gen. You will burn up your transmission on inclines even with a tow package and get blown around even with a sway bar. It is not worth the stress. And don't believe the people that say you would be fine. You won't be. We learned that the hard way with a geopro g16bh. We did have enough power, though. We got the Sequoia for that reason. I am fairly sure that you would run into the same issues in any other midsize suv except for possibly an explorer.
Love this format Josh! Big yes from me on a step up on this series talking about mid-size. Quick plug for how folks should determine what they can tow. Total trailer weight is important but payload capacity on your tow vehicle is just as important. My personal recommendation is to let go of generalizations like half ton towable. For example, a given model year Chevy Silverado can have many thousands of pound differences in towing capacity between trim levels and packages. A fully equipped recent generation Ford Expedition can tow more than most standard half ton pickups. #nerdherd
My truck can pull 6200. But I live in New England. I need something that can handle that weather. Thinking Jayco micro 199. I'm traveling to warmer places but not right away . Nash is too heavy. You're in Michigan right? Has to be folks with lots of weather questions. Thanks Josh. I've learned so much from this channel
Please do a slightly larger 5,500 lb gross weight category. My Tundra is 7300 lb tow packaged rated. I think 5,500 lbs would be the perfect weight for my truck at 25% less than max tow. I wish Bish's would carry the Little Guy Max and the NuCamp 400 trailers. Really a nice upper class pair of trailers.
Would love a video on couples campers for mid sized trucks. I have a Jeep Gladiator with a 7650 tow rating and 1500 payload. I currently tow a freedom express 192rbs. Would like to find a no slide with a dry weight around 4000 and a gvw under 6000.
I'm still waiting on the RVS3 on the Ibex/NoBo. On these small ones - still going to push SUV's. I won't even pull my NoBo 10.6 across town with the Jeep. But again, I recognize the Jeep has the worst suspension ever for putting a trailer on it. I think the Geo/E Pro looked like the most well finished and higher end. If you want to lose the bathroom and poop in a bucket, I really, really like Coachmen/Viking 9000-12000 series. For more of the overlandy, put-stuff-on-the-roof style, they seem like a legit new design.
As always thanks and great job! Do you ever do a similar review for even smaller campers like teardrops, other stick and tins under 3500 GVWR? Something possible the smaller SUV’s might be able to handle?
My question is on the tongue weight. Sorry...I know this opens up another whole can of worms but we are just getting into RV life in our "empty nester" stage. I've seen opinions all over the map on htis issue. Our Ford Explorer has a tow rating of 5300 and a tongue rating of 530. Where should we be comfortably looking with regard to the tongue weight. Their are tons of options that meet a comfortable 4500 GVWR but then could be 445 or so on the tongue (dry). What is the weight that we should be adding to the tongue (I know it will vary some)?
Generally with those you would leave them empty until you reach camp. All of your gear should travel in your vehicle. But you are correct, tongue weight is important, possibly more important than GVWR.
No worries. Ask away! Tongue weight is tricky because Weight distributing hitches push some of that weight off the hitch/tongue and onto the front of the vehicle and rear of the trailer. But.. I can't tell you how much exactly is shifted because it varies A good, easy forumla to estimate loaded hitch weight is as follows 1.) Start by dividing the empty/brochure hitch weight by the brochure dry weight 2.) multiple that by the GVWR 3.) The result is a fairly reasonable estimate of loaded hitch weight
@@JoshtheRVNerdplease correct me I’m wrong but I think modern Ford Explorers are on a unibody frame. A WDH might not be recommended for them unless they’re equipped with a certain tow package. This is something alot of mid sized SUV owners might overlook before hooking up.
Would definitely like to see a list for midsize trucks. Looking to get rid of my GeoPro with a double axle no slide that doesn’t break every month and then sit at the dealer service all season😢
Cars are just not designed for pulling a trailer. They don't have the wiring harness, transmission reduction for towing, brake capacity, and mostly weight ratio. Some of those tear drop trailers would be OK but the standard design trailer is just a big NO.
I drive an 2024 Nissan Frontier. I’m looking for a toy hauler i can pull with my 950lb Harley in it. I have 6,000lb tow rating. I would love to see a video on that.
I totally understand not wanting to get a truck. Do yourself a favor and get a truck. Yes SUVs can tow some campers but even when you're well within capacity it still sucks. 80 dollars in fuel to go 80 miles and the struggle your SUV goes through isn't worth it. I've done it and as soon as I got a truck I couldn't believe I even put my SUV through what I did. It got us camping which is great, but if you're in the position to be able to get a truck.....do it!
Great video, how about one for full sized SUV (Lincoln Navigator, Suburban). There just is not much on towing with full sized SUV out there and cannot do an apple to apple with 1/2 ton truck.
Josh is about the only RV dealer willing to discuss trailers at their maximum weight, not what trailers have under 5,000 pounds dry weight like most (including many manufacturers) dealers and salespeople do. A huge kudos to the RV Nerd for doing it right-again.
I had to learn that. If you watch my older videos my suggestions were different. Learned more proper tow pairings later
Josh: You've definitely hit the mark with this list of SUV towable trailers. It's a nice mix of RV's with slideouts and no slideouts. Everyone one of them is the PERFECT trailer for someone. Good job. Respectfully W.S.
This is excellent - this is my family's issue, we don't want to buy a new truck, we have SUVs
A mid size truck video would be great!
I'll make it happen
Agree! I have 2016 Tacoma and finding a good layout with good weight, is tough
Yes, please! Thanks 😁
Yep! Newer rangers (2019 and up) have 7500lbs towing capacity. I've got a 2015 Jayco jayflight slx 184bh. Love it! But would love a little more space. Just don't want to tow something super long but know my truck can handle something a little heavier than most SUVs.
Josh, this is an excellent Buyer's Guide of sub-5k trailers. And the MEGA-description box is a great reference. Well done, sir.
Awesome! TY :)
Loved the video. Yes, I would like a video for “Midsize” trucks such as Toyota Tacoma or Jeep Gladiator.
Thanks nerd.

Kudos to those manufacturers who fit a bathroom sink into their small trailers. 👏👏👏

I know you don’t, but I believe the industry is missing out on a big segment which would eventually lead to future sales due to the relationship with the customer.
If they make the 16EV with a 2-door fridge, and a bunk/office conversion like the Ember 190MSL has, this would be perfect!
Love to see a video on truly half-ton towable couples fifth wheels.
Really depends on the half ton in question
The reality is that’s a painfully short list
yes to the mid size. I love your videos sir!
Thank you for the video! Love all of the campers on the list! Yes I would like a middle size trucks video.
Will do!
Thanks Josh, I really appreciate the video, and hard work. Thanks again !!
My pleasure!
Здравствуй, добрый человек. Смотреть твои видео огромное удовольствие. Ты делаешь очень хорошие видео с огромной информацией. Это большой труд. Здоровья тебе и счастья.
Thank you!
You made this for me and my family! Great options but sadly none work for us other then towing capability. So with that I say yes to the 7500 and below options. Because all the ones we're interested in have a full weight just over 5000 or up to 6000.
Awesome I'll make it happen
Glad to help! Those little retros are fun though :)
Thanks uncle Josh. Been waiting for this vid
Regular Nerd Herd member here!
🙌🏻
No Keystones huh? I’d add the 1700BH to that list- it’s a great RV! An SUV can tow it and best of all- no slides!
Would love a vid like this for light weight mid-size (possibly tandem axles); Great video TY
Noted!
Thank you for covering this topic, great 👍 info as always - as a person I know once said there's a toilet seat out there for every ***
Yes 5500 lb would be a great video as well
a very nice way of phrasing that lol
Saving this vid. EXACTLY the info we needed!!! THANK YOU!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks again uncle Josh.
Mid size truck video would be cool. I see several that my 4Runner can tow in this list
Noted!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for this video
you bet!
Thanks!
YES thank you!
Josh, did you know the AI, types vicious RV every time you say Bish's. We all know you wouldn't be vicious !! Lol
Yeah it’s funny so I leave it
Great video! Thanks for all the info!
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, please do a 7500 towable list. Love your chanel and the information you share with us,. You are my go to rv guy.
Will do!
Great video - thanks! We have a heavy 30' travel trailer now and a 1/2 ton truck. Would like to downsize to a little lighter/smaller trailer so this was a very informative video.
Would like to see some 1/2 ton towables as well.
I have video for under 7500lbs and models under 30ft
Josh please make a video for rv towable by large SUV (Tahoe, etc). Please.
Good topic, thanks Unk
#nerdherd
I'll work something out for mid-size truck options as well
I got a 2018 GMC Canyon Crew Cab Long Bed 4x4 with the max towing package. Would love to see a midsize towable video.
Yep yep! We're in MI
Great video! It would be awesome if you could do one for midsize trucks with a gross of 6000 to 6500. Thanks!
I'll see what i can work out
I'd like to see a video on the best TOWABLE CARS behind by class A or C.
Thank you, great video, i love i can fully understand you, some people should never hold a video camera. Hello from Utah.
Thanks for watching!
I’d love to see you review nucamp and intech
Would love a video on couples campers for mid sized trucks. I have a Jeep Gladiator with a 7650 tow rating and 1500 payload. I currently tow a freedom express 192rbs. Would like to find a no slide with a dry weight around 4000 and a gvw under 6000.
Great video.
For the algorithm!
👍
TY Sir!
Would love for you to do a midsized truck video.
Noted!
I haven't seen that one quite yet. On paper its the one that makes the most sense to me
Hey Josh, Have you had any experience with Embers line of TT? I understand their 1st year productions was plagued with leaking problems.
Please make a video for the mid size truck market. I am in the market for an rv for a mid size truck!
Will do!
7500 to 5000 would be great 🎉❤thank
Will do!
Tell GoPlay to make a 15’ trailer kinda like the Geo 15 series. It’s good for singles & singles with mad dogs 🐕& mad cats 🐈
That'd be awesome
As always thanks and great job!
Do you ever do a similar review for even smaller campers like teardrops, other stick and tins under 3500 GVWR? Something possible the smaller SUV’s might be able to handle?
I'm willing but not sure I see enough in that category to populate a video
@@JoshtheRVNerd appreciate the reply! I thought that might be the case. Have a great day!
The wolf pup shown showed max at 5480 lb. I like the Wolf Pup's though :)
...whoops lol :)
But.. I can't tell you how much exactly is shifted because it varies
A good, easy forumla to estimate loaded hitch weight is as follows
1.) Start by dividing the empty/brochure hitch weight by the brochure dry weight
2.) multiple that by the GVWR
3.) The result is a fairly reasonable estimate of loaded hitch weight
Awesome...Thank you!! Your videos have really helpped us get a grasp of our options. I thank you sir for what you do!!
@@JoshtheRVNerd
@@JoshtheRVNerdplease correct me I’m wrong but I think modern Ford Explorers are on a unibody frame. A WDH might not be recommended for them unless they’re equipped with a certain tow package. This is something alot of mid sized SUV owners might overlook before hooking up.
Tounge weight is typically 10% of net weight of trailer.
Honestly surprised R-Pod isn't on the list since most of the models are geared towards smaller camping.
Good campers. I just haven’t had a chance to put my hands on them personally
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Would definitely like to see a list for midsize trucks. Looking to get rid of my GeoPro with a double axle no slide that doesn’t break every month and then sit at the dealer service all season😢
I'll get the midsize truck video done. Give me a little time!
Thanks Josh! Love the channel…very helpful information always!
IF you're seriously towing... 100%
if you're only just casually towing, then I can see using the "daily driver" SUV now and then
@JoshtheRVNerd I agree and that's what we did for a bit but quickly realized it was upgrade time. It got us started which is a good thing!
I'm out here!
Great video, how about one for full sized SUV (Lincoln Navigator, Suburban). There just is not much on towing with full sized SUV out there and cannot do an apple to apple with 1/2 ton truck.
That's.. a great idea. TY
great video
Thanks!
