My favourite F13 film. Don't know why, but I just like it. The boat setting, the design of Jason, the Metropolis song, the scene where Jason is actually in Manhattan in Times Sauare, and basically the overall crapness. I love it.
I know right! There are so many better, well made, scarier, and just more entertaining Friday movies out there but for some reason I love this one and Jason X the most - Hell, I even thought the remake was a lot of fun. again, not saying these films are good, I just enjoy them - The original and part 6 are probably the best at being actual movies.
Jason Takes Manhattan is a bit like A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 in that it was an end of the 80's heavy metal rocking, have fun and laugh with friends style sequel for it's respective franchise. Jason Lives was like that too and why i really enjoy both 6 and 8 more than most of the other films in the franchise, although i like 3 a lot too but for different reasons.
It was the first one I ever saw. I was about 5 or 6 years old, and it gave me nightmares for weeks! D: haha I became a horror fan later in my childhood/early teens, and I'm one to this day. This movie is my favorite in the franchise for that reason. I realize it's not a "good" entry in the series, but I'd pick it any day over 9 and X.
Part VI is the best overall Friday the 13th movie. Part VII has the best looking Jason. Part VIII has the most crappy charm. Part X is just crap, but some people find that charming for some reason (honestly guys, outside of that one kill it's all dreadfully awful :p)
Echoboomer1987 I just said this, but basically that means everyone will believe she faked her death and somehow never had a childhood. Or an adulthood.
+Mr Jambola L Its a reference to the Tamara's Never Seen series on Channel Awesome when the actress on the Nostalgia Critic talks about how she hasn't seen really any thing. The Terminators, Back the the Future, really popular movies that most everyone has seen but she hasn't.
In the crazy deckhand's defense who says "This ship is doomed!", there is a scene where he sees the small boat the couple were killed on earlier floating nearby with blood splattered on one of the windows, so he knew that Jason was going to crash the party.
Recently watched this with commentary (From Crystal Lake to Manhattan DVD collection). Listening to the director explain the funding and studio issues really explained a lot. Anyway, Kane Hodder still rules. ... so does V.C. Dupree!

Wow... I'm impressed by the scenic cruise they take on their way from Crystal Lake to Manhattan. I love gazing at the towering coastal mountains and beautiful fjords of New Jersey...
Not even three minutes in and thanks to Brad I've got two silly crossovers already in mind: Jason vs. Batman, and Jason vs. the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Any U.K. viewers remember BBC1 screening this? It was cut to ribbons (the f-words, close-ups of the spear gun in the boy’s stomach, the girl on the boat squealing before she’s killed, the geek being electrocuted, the disco girl being strangled, the needle coming through the chest) but it was kind of awesome the BBC even broadcast it at all.
You know what I would like to see? Jason Takes Washington DC. A group of people herd Jason into the State of the Union and prevent exit for a scene that intentionally tries to see if it's still possible to get the NC-17 for violence in a horror movie. 20 minutes long. Maybe 30.
On Channel Awesome, there's a series of videos, starring Tamara, who has apparently not seen very many movies. The joke being the victim died before seeing her twenties.
this is 3rd favourite behind 4 and 6 and i've no idea why but the boat setting, the jason look, when he's on times square it all just works in a weird way
Why are people selling Jason masks? Well, considering people tend to be horrible and its more then likely someone has already made a movie about the Crystal Lake murders.. "MERCHANDISING, MERCHANDISING!" Honestly though, I can believe theres some asshole with a gift shop right outside crystal lake, selling prop machetes, masks and shitty T-Shirts like 'I survived Crystal Lake' or 'I went to Crystal Lake and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt" and kind of crap.
Appox 6:49 jason knocks boxers head clean off!.. then Nintendo music plays as head tumbles down was just so funny!!! lol!!. Then says '' GIVE UP RETIRE''. LOL!
Anybody else find it ironic that the "up and running camp" is finally for once safe for beer, drugs and sex for once? Jason on a boat and stalking New York, while groups of horny teens along the camp grounds only have to worry about is waking up to a hangover and their cabins suffering a power outage. XD
To be fair, most of northern New Jersey picks up New York radio stations, as it is quite geographically local. And having been exposed to enough crappy New York radio, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a DJ did a shout-out to the graduating high school class from New Jersey. It's the kind of audience-pandering fluff that radio station managers love.
I was watching this the other night. Thought it was so strange that Jason seems hellbent of hunting the people from the ship down, He's surrounded by people and seems to ignore them.
To my understanding the reason the "I ♥ NY" poster was removed is because that is a copyrighted design, at least using those specific fonts and colors, and it was used without permission for the movie's marketing.
seriously though, great choice of films, really did make my day. Now I can look forward to a week of tapping stoned gremlin on my subscriptions list, seeing that part two isn't posted yet, and ending up watching Kirk Cameron save Christmas again followed by cannibal holocaust, my "go to" combo. The film review equivalent of palate cleansing ginger followed by a heaping plate of dripping raw sashimi. Class defined.
What's your ranking of the series, worst to best? Here's mine: 1. Friday the 13th: Part VII - The New Blood 2. Friday the 13th: Part IV - The Final Chapter 3. Friday the 13th: Part III 4. Friday the 13th: Part VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan 5. Freddy vs. Jason 6. Friday the 13th: Part VI - Jason Lives 7. Friday the 13th (1980) 8. Friday the 13th: Part II 9. Jason Goes to Hell 10. Jason X 11. Friday the 13th (2009) 12. Friday the 13th: Part V - A New Beginning
Part 1 of the review was great. Can't wait for part 2! Correct me if I'm wrong, but other than the 100th, 200th, and 300th episodes, I think that this is the first Cinema Snob review to be split into parts... As for the actual film... I don't hate "Jason Takes Manhattan". Its dumb, but its a fun kind of dumb. But yeah, I agree. One of the most misleading titles ever!
What the fuck did I just watch? No wonder, people were disappointed. And now I remember why I stopped watching these series after Part lll. Seriously, this is like 'American Werewolf in Paris' would only show the subbasements of the Louvre. Hell, even that would be better than this, because that would actually play *in* Paris. Oh, and Brad, 'Nightmares and Dreamscapes' is great. If you want really bad Stephen King, try 'Regulator' and/or 'Desperation.'
At the beginning, there is actually a simple explanation for why an abandoned camp would still have its lights on: Crispin Glover's crazy dance supplied years of extra energy.
11:57 Those "kids" shouldn't need supervision by this point. 12:12 And another character wearing two long-sleeve shirts. Probably out of season, but what season is this supposed to be? At any rate, it's in keeping with the "tradition" that's basically a trope. 12:26 Why is it that they could remember where the ax mark goes on the hockey mask, but they couldn't remember the specific asymmetry of Jason's face and eyes? 13:02 Why do some people think the heart is way off to the left just because it has specific asymmetry?
My question: when they decided they wanted to put Jason in a city, why did they pick Manhattan when they could have gone with CHI-chi-chiHA-ha-hago? Tee hee! ;)
Any time I listen to the Amorphis song "Summer's End", the opening guitar riff instantly reminds me of this movie and Metropolis' "Darkest Side of the Night" lol.
The shittiest Friday the 13th by far. Saw it when I was a kid, then saw it censored to hell and back on AMC which made an already miserable experience even more miserable. They even censored the part where Jason comedically knocks the black guy's head clean off! Unforgivable.
Matt H He spends half the film killing people on a boat, and all of the kills are sub-standard. I'd agree with you if it contained more footage of Jason chokeslamming people through coffee tables, but unfortunately it doesn't. Maybe it's not *the* worst, but,it's up there. Probably right behind Jason Goes To Hell.
Cure Optimism now jason goes to hell, that truly is awful. The thing with half the film being on a boat, I can understand why people would be annoyed about it. Two things that helped me was that I first caught this movie on tv without really knowing the title (obviously I knew it was a jason film) so it was a bonus when he did (finally) get to new York. Second thing, I thought the idea of of people being stuck on a boat with Jason with nowhere else to go was great. I'll agree about the kills though, really tame, especially compared to some of the other films.
Now if Jason would of taken the love boat then that would of been a much better movie,,lol..I would watch that then he could of landed on Guiligans Island and killed all them too..lol.
Yay. Finally to my favorite of the F13 series. Mostly cause of Julius. He is the popular jock in the group but actually has leadership skills, makes rational decisions and when he is finally cornered by Jason he gets to put up the best fight in the series.
I love how Jason looks so confused through out the whole film
Bit like the audience
Even Jason is like, "Why am I in Vancouver when I'm supposed to be in New York? And how does toxic waste turn me back into a child? What the fuck?!?"
I imagine its Kane Hodders actual reaction to the script. 9/JGTH got so bad Jason decided to bail for 90 percent of it.
Yeah his covered face really shows his expressions in this one
It is like I swore I was going to New York not some New Jersey back alley or rooftop oh well on with the killing
With a title like "Jason Takes Manhattan," I was kind of hoping for a fun and spirited romp, where Jason tries to make it big on Broadway.
No, that's in the sequel Friday the 13th: The Musical
It's tough for a while but he's working in the chorus when he hears they're making a Toxic Avengers Musical.
And get married at the end.
