His explanation of why he returned to RHCP is so modest; I love the way he listened to the albums 2 years ago almost like an ‘outsider’ and so realised how great they are. We all could have told him that, of course 😆
I like how relaxed John is with these sorts of interviews. He really likes to explain his musical direction and thought process when he feels that he is talking to someone who is interested in the music itself, over his status or fame. It really shows and is really engaging to listen to.
His dedication to music as art is pretty fascinating. I'm sure it's caused endless frustration for others, like him quitting the Peppers twice, but it seems like he genuinely seeks authenticity in what he does.

I agree! For me, also, Josh's decade in the band, and the new energy he brought, gave me some perspective on John's music because we got to enjoy Josh for so long and not feel like "oh well he's not John so forget it."
Here in England I’ve been having a terrible few days, and I’ve had shadows collide demos on this afternoon and it’s made me feel amazing. John is the greatest
As a former addict and aspiring artist, this meant a lot. Music doesn’t have to be made for the sake of others perception. It comes from within the soul. Something much bigger. It was just chance John and Flea met. Incredible. Inspiring. Thanks for this. Cheers!
The fact is most of us will never gain much recognition for music beyond perhaps a few thousand views on youtube or spotify. That idea can paralyze you unless you decide to not care. Some guys can never get over the "I'm not going to be a rock star" realization.
P*Funk Frusciante found rock stardom was not what it was cracked up to be (excuse pun 😆) in fact, it caused him frightening mental illness. Retrospectively this isn’t surprising, and the experience made him strong and even more creative. I feel sad, even angry though that technology and more recently Covid have ruined the prospect of appreciation and livelihood for musicians. The record industry stood aside and allowed it all to happen and will never be held accountable for it’s failure to nurture and support artists adequately. I don’t have any answers, but I hope musicians such as yourself can gain the inspiration to keep growing, somehow, otherwise we all lose and become spiritually the poorer.
This interview makes me realize why John is so talented, and brings something special to the Chilis: he puts musical craft above commercial or live appeal. A true artist.
I like how he embraces being cold like that song "this cold". it's still emotional and you can actually feel pleasure and happiness in it if you can transcend it or sublimate it creatively like him. I can relate.
his statements toward the end made me feel incredibly good about playing in a band where exploration is a key ingredient. the challenge he mentions is such a bolt of lightning. hope other folks in bands got that same inspiration :-)
@@AndrewKarczewski Well, if Rick Rubin is involved, his name shouldn't even be on the album. Maybe they write, 'Helped or Inspired by Rick Rubin', but not "produced by Rubin'. He is notorious for essentially never being in the studio with the band. He lets the band and his engineer do all of the work.I have heard about a ton of stories like this involving him. One time while doing a Slayer album, he would show up in the studio once every 7 or 8 days to see how things were going. I don't think that he is lazy or anything, it is just that he will take on multiple projects at once. Bands either love him or hate him. Some accept his absences as 'it's just the way he works'...while others hate it and don't work with him again.
Very interesting interview, thanks for sharing! Those of you who don't care about all the interesting stuff John says about his music, creativity and things like that, they talk a bit about RHCP starting at 42:55

Juan Jaime Siqueiros RHCP has to end at some point - no band can be forever. But with Frusciante back, whenever they end, it will be from a position of strength. He’ll make them as good as they can ever be.
Marie Fontana Marie Fontana hard to believe that rock is on its last breath and almost dead as John says. I think that has to do with the way music has changed hands to the internet, like UA-cam and Spotify, and how little they are paying the musicians, and even more so, music companies. People who listen to rock music don’t put a whole lot of money into it. They listen to it, and consume it, but don’t really pay for it anymore. Why would you, when you can get it for free on UA-cam? So, record companies have decided to put out the music that they can make money on. Rock will never die, but, it’s not going to be pushed without the demand for it. And, demand equals money. So, if we want rock to stay alive, WE MUST PAY FOR IT. Or, we will be forced to listen to the music that teenage girls like the most, because that’s who puts the most money into the pot.
It’s really curious how such a melodic songwriter and virtuoso musician that has in-depth sophisticated musical knowledge, can have such an interest in these electronic forms of music. Most accomplished musicians would turn their nose up at jungle and hardcore. John has an open mind and next to no snobbery when it comes to music. It’s refreshing. ☺️
Harry ML I agree, there are different form is sophistication and complexity in music. Electronic music expresses that differently than rock, and as a self-proclaimed lifelong student of music, it makes sense that John would gravitate to something that casts light on music in new perspectives :) Anyone who turns their nose up to different music probably has a very rigid idea of what music is, and John is the antithesis of that!
@@heety9 ur so right with the differences between rock and electronic music. I've started to listen to some really "weird" electronic music and at first it's hard to listen to cause in rock type music ur really used to having the typical changes from chorus to verse and vice versa and big climax with solos or big instrumetal parts and ur always expecting that more quick changes of sections and things like that, but in electronic music most of the time it's just a big progressive sound, things getting added every 4 bars and just this huge building Soundwave that is just incredible. Sometimes u get a big climax or sometimes u can just get this chill beat for 20 minutes and that is really captivating and amazing, it's cool to open to some new stuff and learn things about different genre's
He explains that practicing was always the most important part of his musicianship. That blows the mind, how serious he actually is about it. How conciouss of its impact on life.
Yes in way. I used to be imto that too, very much, but I feel he is capable to channel so much higher vibrations/musical listening xperiences. Jungle is cool, but its also really root'y, like flesh, fucking, no thoughts, not much heart. So for me, I wish he did something that isn't as earth/malkuth like. But who knows, maybe he is trying to be more like the organs of the body that just function. "" Thpughts are disturbers of life, like dreams are of sleep" (Crowley) But... Damn, we are not just feelgood fuckmachines. I hope JF soon goes over to some other genre. But if its deathmetal or something likethat, idk, then I'll cry!
The good feeling people hear today from music that was made 30 years ago transcends all marketing. So many good things inside of this interview. Mentioning Rock on its last dying breath but making music as a Chili Pepper once again makes for an interesting melting pot. An expert musician and musical nerd, thank you for this interview John i also have a cat so RIP to Maya
@ Yodan Gurung aw .... my cat is called Slinky Sciante ♥️ I love how Frublistened to all the RHCP albums 2 years ago, then realised how great they are, and how important they are to people.
Thank you Mr. Frusciante! You were a gift from God & am so thankful you discovered all types of music! I look forward to seeing you next year to hear whatever you & the RHCP'S decide to play! This interview was very inspiring!!!
24:20 that hurts so bad…. The Empyrean, Curtains, Ataxia, Pbx Funicular Intaglio Zone, Letur Lefr… amazing records, so sad John doesn’t want to sing anymore
It was a bit heartbreaking to hear. PBX and Letur Lefr are amongst some of my favorite music of all time. I also of course love his more traditional music in the 00s. But like someone else said, I have a feeling he will circle back around. He is very intense and in the moment. He says this but then literally a year later wrote “The Heavy Wing” and sings on that and there is no way that wasn’t “his true self”. It’s impossible to write something that sounds so genuine and not mean it, especially from him. Plus he seems to be having a great time on tour. I for sure think he will sing again, even if it’s a different way. He is too diverse, even for what he says “I only express myself in the ways of solely electronic music” kinda goes against everything that makes John, John! He literally loves every type of music.
Honestly, I have bo real expectations when it comes to the new album. At this time, it seems to me that it could end up being pretty much anything. But as long as the musical connection these guys share is there and as long as they do what they do from the heart, I can't see it being anything less than their other records with John. Every single album since Blood Sugar has been different and driven by a different mindset and perspective yet all of them shared the same magic and spirit. This one will be the same.
Probably why the band dropped their nearly finished album with Josh was - that they just weren't that excited about the result... I think it really is that simple. And they had to make it before they could asses the situation. They don't need the money - it is something else that drives them and if John would come back off course they have to give it a shot! For them it's all about making music that can be as good as it can get. These guys worked 35 years for this band - they know when the songs aren't there...
Great interview could listen to John speak for hours. A very Buddhist, Eastern philosophical approach to music. Creating music without the Expectation of the audience. Without being Attached to a certain kind of music and not letting the influences of the world affect your creativity. Keeping the creative process new approaching it with a different perspective without Aversion. John continues to be an artist in the true sense of the word. making Original music without influences from the outside world but simultaneously tapping into his own memory of influences from his past. Being in the NOW of the creative process. Rock music "taking its last breath" in the sense that the best music doesn't have to be behind us if we are willing to look at it in a new way. and as always talking about energy, electricity and the magic of sound. Jungle boogie. Keep intros and outros in music keep the foreplay in music so, we still have the peaks to look forward too and keep it new so, we are always keeping it real every time. I'm down with that. lol!
The next chili peppers album will be fascinating - will JF approach guitar from a deeper electronica stance? There have been glimpses of it, most notably on By The Way. Can’t wait to see..
Songs like breaking the girl really effected me. I thought Johns guitar playing in his younger years was full of magic and mystical forces. Dani California wasn’t my favorite song but I think John should explore acoustics again in the next upcoming albums. Really brilliant musician
If John Frusciante brings a jungle beat Progressive Edge to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in this new era I will be over the moon. Also his recent electronic work is great.
When he talks about club music with in an intro and outro to mix songs live, it makes me think of Blood Sugar SM. The first 3-4 songs were recorded live into each other I believe. Like they were self mixing.
It might be their best album ever to date! Their gonna be cooking something new and fresh to rock I bet. They have been together for a few months jamming so they prob have been exploring and mixing genres with Rock to see what works. With how fast they bust out songs I can guess that they can record maybe 3 albums worth of songs if quarantine last midway till next year. Even then maybe they won’t tour as much and just create magic in Studio Albums only like the The Beatles late era. Anyway I’m excited we should get some sick music without a doubt from the Chili’s, Johns knows how to produce more now, he’s explored and has knowledge in many genres, flea is his vanilla to his cream, Anthony busting out catchy rhythms and chorus’s to John’s riff’s and Chad keeping them all on check slapping his sticks around them all. The whole band seems to be at a fresh start rn which is even better!
I keep having this recurring idea when I hear John or Flea talk.....in my head, they let a grown-ass man that they don't know (me) come over to their house and stay for a week so I can go through their record collection and they can show/teach me about all of the shit I should be listening to in any genre of music. I am well on my way in a few genre's but their knowledge of music is deep. In my head I can hear Flea saying, "So this afternoon we are going to learn about Charles Mingus"........As if, he/they have nothing else to do.... ;-). hahahaha Okay, so back to reality, I have learned so much about music from these guys, I can't thank them enough. Thanks for the great interview.
Look Skrillex and deadmau5 are definitely edm but the knowledge of electronic processing that Joel knows about is phenomenal and Skrillex's ability to pioneer a mainstream electronic scene is pretty impressive
Thank you for the upload brother! I loved John's Trickfinger ft. Aura T-09 stuff, solo stuff and of course RHCP! I am extremely excited for their reunion album!
I've listened to Aphex Twin for like 10 years. Before John started putting out electronic. So when John went into electronic it was very easy listening.
@@irenahalder either you like it or you don’t..once you get deep into it. It’s just music. Made electronically by machines rather then humans and traditional acoustic instruments..
Recently Dave praised John es on this radio guitar show, and expressed how much he loved his playing and his amazing work at such a young age in the bssm album. He even went to say that blood sugar is his favorite album and if you have to ask is the song he likes the most :)
The next Peppers album is gonna be interesting for sure. It will have at least a few electronic influences, and maybe John is gonna co-produce it with Rick Rubin or possibly even produce it by himself.
I don't think the new RHCP album will have anything to do with electronic music. Flea himself said it's all about the chemistry he and John have, that musical language they share. That's bass and guitar, that is what they share. No Flea playing trumpet or piano.
Hey John. In Rhode Island we have a DJ that became Huge in the 80s into the 90s VENOM BECAME the man spinning house and jungle. 93 we had a very large RAVE called Project Earth if I'm correct. On name and year. It was at an Inside Palladium and the theme park was open to the show man that was such an amazing experience. It felt like time stood still for a moment in time with thousands of people dancing together. That is far out
I’m happy John is back but I’m confused as to why he has joined back with no rock influence inside him. And he knew the band where finishing up a new record which he stoped. I love John but the politics of this band is saddening and I feel for josh
Run, Forrest! Run!!! Starting to think his return is just a reunion. And if that’s the case than I think the band would have been better off creatively with josh. It’s a unpopular opinion but we’ll just have to wait
@@Lefer_ whats confusing?? Theres money to be made from bands reforming its as simple as that, the chilli peppers are a brand business, they're not really relevant anymore in pop music as such ( getting old) so touring is a money spinner unfortunately in the capitolist world we live in...
"Accept their offer to play in the band". I was under the impression John asked them to rejoin, subsequently replacing Josh. However, this statemnt suggests they approached John to replace Josh?
Could anyone please explain to me what he means when he says (around 18min 46sec) something like: "it's like this prague thing". Just before that, it was mentioned the 'prague legend'. What does it mean? Also, right after he says 'then you parrot it down as much as you can'. I would appreciate any help I can get to understand this sentence. Thank you!
Prog not Prague. Prog (Progressive Rock) is a type of music from the late 60s/70s, bands like Yes (who the interviewer mentions), King Crimson, early Genesis, some Pink Floyd . To parrot something is to imitate it.
Actually he said "to pair it down" not parrot. I think he means to strip it down to its essentials, to its bare bones. Prog rock is kind of known for long and complex songs, sometimes with many instruments/musicians and lyrics that are considered intellectual by some and pretentious by others. Just Google Prog Rock and you will find many articles explaining it better than me. Cheers
Buck Ó Donnghaile so, it would actually be ‘to pare it down’, like I originally thought. In the transcription of the interview, someone wrote ‘Prague’, instead of ‘prog’ and ‘parrot down’ instead of ‘pare it down’. I’m just trying to help a translator friend of mine. Thank you so much again!
He just chatted about the evolution of his creative process. Really interesting interview. If you only want to listen to RHCP stuff, skip to the last 10 mins. But I would recommend listening to the whole lot
Soo if I'm correct, he isn't into rock music anymore and yet he is still going to produce an album with the chili peppers.. An alt rock band..I wonder what's that gonna be like..
You should check out his written interviews too, super interesting. He likes the 808,909,606,707, elektron machinedrum, this album he uses samples a lot. Samples are the only way to get that chopped up jungle beat to the the degree on Maya. ✨Listen to what he says about how he uses them in the recent interviews..

@ Yodan Gurung aw .... my cat is called Slinky Sciante ♥️ I love how Frublistened to all the RHCP albums 2 years ago, then realised how great they are, and how important they are to people.
wow! first long talk with frusciante in years i think. thanks !!! i am going to listen it with time, some food, and a beer.
ITS JUST ITS JUST
LIKE, LIKE, LIKE
YOU KNOW YOU KNOW

MUSIC
SO... YEAH
Thank you Mr. Frusciante! You were a gift from God & am so thankful you discovered all types of music! I look forward to seeing you next year to hear whatever you & the RHCP'S decide to play! This interview was very inspiring!!!
Wow, I don't think I've heard John this focused and engaged in an interview before. Great listen!
@ 42:56 the topic changes to RHCP stuff
Thanks a lot !!!!
24:20 that hurts so bad…. The Empyrean, Curtains, Ataxia, Pbx Funicular Intaglio Zone, Letur Lefr… amazing records, so sad John doesn’t want to sing anymore
I have a feeling he'll circle back to at least something in the style of PBX, if not Empyrean at some point again the future.
He literally loves every type of music.
this interview is a gem!
I played my guitar throughout the entire interview and immersed completely with playing and absorbing the sound of his voice.
I feel like I've gone back in time listening to this, it's so weird to hear john talk.
Been keeping me sane during the pandy with john and rhcp.
Likewise
Probably why the band dropped their nearly finished album with Josh was - that they just weren't that excited about the result... I think it really is that simple. And they had to
make it before they could asses the situation. They don't need the money - it is something else that drives them and if John would come back off course they have to give it a shot! For them it's all about making music that can be as good as it can get. These guys worked 35 years for this band - they know when the songs aren't there...
Completely agree
I'm down with that. lol!
i can't wait for Maya to come out
I never knew John Frusciante listens to Charlie Christian solos! Interesting interview.
Urgh- thanks for the interview. So inspiring to hear your process on a new project.
wow thank you so much for posting this for the rest of us :)
The next chili peppers album will be fascinating - will JF approach guitar from a deeper electronica stance? There have been glimpses of it, most notably on By The Way. Can’t wait to see..
Damn, I never noticed that. Which songs would you say showcase that the best on By the Way?
Sounds very interesting! Paired with Flea coming back from projects like Atoms for Peace that could make up for a new interesting sound.
So, what songs on By The Way have electronic influences? Because I can’t think of any..
@@UnrealGamer099 The zephyr song is one of them
Matt JC The title track definitely has some electronic influences in its guitar part, specifically in the verses.
Also his recent electronic work is great.
what a beautiful person 💚
Acousticly you're also great man.Hi from Brazil!
In my head I can hear Flea saying, "So this afternoon we are going to learn about Charles Mingus"........As if, he/they have nothing else to do.... ;-). hahahaha
Okay, so back to reality, I have learned so much about music from these guys, I can't thank them enough.
Thanks for the great interview.
Aphex Twin, BOC, Autechre, the holy trinity of electronic.
U forgot skrillex and deadmau5
I dont even kno who those guys you mentioned are tbh
@Isaac Dweck skirllex is sick bro
@@BlastinRope I recommend kicking off with Drukqs if you haven't heard of aphex twin
Look Skrillex and deadmau5 are definitely edm but the knowledge of electronic processing that Joel knows about is phenomenal and Skrillex's ability to pioneer a mainstream electronic scene is pretty impressive
His joying in talking about gear and electronic music, is exactly what it used to be with guitar music. #rhcp album is going to be nuts!
Thank you for the upload brother! I loved John's Trickfinger ft. Aura T-09 stuff, solo stuff and of course RHCP! I am extremely excited for their reunion album!
❤😁
afx is what I’m really into these days so...thank you john
I've listened to Aphex Twin for like 10 years. Before John started putting out electronic. So when John went into electronic it was very easy listening.
Kevin Myrick oh I wish I could say the same! I’m living in hope of understanding it all one day.
@@irenahalder either you like it or you don’t..once you get deep into it. It’s just music. Made electronically by machines rather then humans and traditional acoustic instruments..
John's still being a fan of Jane's. Yes, Navarro played and plays on that band.
Recently Dave praised John es on this radio guitar show, and expressed how much he loved his playing and his amazing work at such a young age in the bssm album. He even went to say that blood sugar is his favorite album and if you have to ask is the song he likes the most :)
I love this man 💕
John is on an electronic high but it will still have him in guitar...and their concerts will be awesome to hear him playing them amazing leads
The next Peppers album is gonna be interesting for sure. It will have at least a few electronic influences, and maybe John is gonna co-produce it with Rick Rubin or possibly even produce it by himself.
JF thrives with minimalism. I have high hopes for ‘Maya’ and whatever RHCP will release next.
Johns deep knowledge of electronic music combined with the RHCP pop influence will make an amazing album!!
Love me some fresh Frusciante.
Thanks for the upload🙏
❤😁
Sub base Essex legends. Can't believe John knows about them and loves it. Mind blown
John be looking like a senior model in this picture
whooahhh , can't wait to hear the new chillis stuff!! John maybe co producing?? yeeesss
Not only did he return he recovered and was amazing at it
Really hope he knows it’s not the marketing or promotion, but him and the bands talent that we, the fans, love
In terms of promotion and marketing the Peppers are one of the worst lol ! It s clearly not promotion and marketing that made them
@Justin Kramer he definitely said he knows that now. And that he fully understands the difference.
Irena Halder I understand that, just the fact that he thought otherwise is sad
Justin Kramer I agree. Distance and hindsight have changed his mind, thank the goddess ♥️
His electronic music reminds me a bit of Kelly Bailey's work. I don't know much about electronic music, but I like what I hear.
Thankyou for uploading 🖤
the way john sas "the machine" makes me think about the machines in HORIZON ZERO DAWN heheheh
I don't think the new RHCP album will have anything to do with electronic music. Flea himself said it's all about the chemistry he and John have, that musical language they share. That's bass and guitar, that is what they share. No Flea playing trumpet or piano.
15:00 Always make the music go forward...of course there are peaks and valleys but u know...
$$$$$$
Exactly. John is genius, I love the band, but they treated Josh very bad and throw away the upcoming album with him like garbage.
I hope he didnt just join for the live gigs and will actually create new music with them, but what hes saying here is really confusing.
Excellent engaging interview!
"Accept their offer to play in the band". I was under the impression John asked them to rejoin, subsequently replacing Josh. However, this statemnt suggests they approached John to replace Josh?
🤔
I think Flea and John is the crucial relationship that meant John came back - Flea is probably the one that suggested It to the group
Who cares? Their not the same without him.
I assume that John said he was interested 1st, followed by an invite from the band
Josh himself said that Flea told him "we asked John to rejoin the band" so...
This made my day! Thanks! ❤️
It's beyond hilarious that any of you feel you have the musical talent and knowledge to criticize this man.
Exactly..he’s nice to his fans.
John's gonna have a Daft Punk style desk live.
29 years to the day after the release of BSSM
Excuse me....how in the hell i miss this. Brother John...hit me up on FB brother.
You do know he doesn't do social media right?
I love this channel.
Listening in sichuan china.
I summise that 0nly positive w the covid stalling the new album is that theyve had all this time to perfect it .
Buck Ó Donnghaile thank you so much for your response. It was very helpful!
@@terezarae4530 you're welcome havr a great day. Here's a video by the band Yes they mention ua-cam.com/video/nx_GIji9EGw/v-deo.html
john is slowly turning into spenny from kenny vs spenny
anyone please give the summary of the interview?
He just chatted about the evolution of his creative process. Really interesting interview. If you only want to listen to RHCP stuff, skip to the last 10 mins. But I would recommend listening to the whole lot
@@keithmccarthy thank you very much 😄
I have something like 50000 records in my house:-)
@@monikaszymanowska5142 🤣🤣 think he said 15000......but still, a ridiculous number
@@keithmccarthy And 15000 would take 2 years of non-stop listening if he meant regular cds, not just any pieces of recording:-) Geniuses are crazy!
Soo if I'm correct, he isn't into rock music anymore and yet he is still going to produce an album with the chili peppers.. An alt rock band..I wonder what's that gonna be like..
Keo Hey - he is still into the idea of giving something new and enriching to rock music, something innovative; he thinks he can do that.
Sssssshhhh God is speaking
background music is hella annoying just me or??
His electonic stuff
jajajjajajjaa so true
I would prefer central in the background ): btw
He says "electronic" so many times I tried to imagine Blade Runner chase:-)
TheArchitect54 that’s his new electronic album; we should all try and be open minded about all forms of music, though sometimes it’s hard 😉
What's the song in the background?
Anja Motherless - Maya - John Frusciante
@@Zeal808 Thanks!
Is it interesting mr. interviewer?? It's interesting isn't it?
“You know”
Love u John
What drum machines does he use ?????
You should check out his written interviews too, super interesting. He likes the 808,909,606,707, elektron machinedrum, this album he uses samples a lot. Samples are the only way to get that chopped up jungle beat to the the degree on Maya.
✨Listen to what he says about how he uses them in the recent interviews..
guys what does Jonh talked about when he said "shows that she was throwing and stuff it" 14:30?
Seria increible que alguien la subtitule al castellaño,
Let’s lock John back in his home and get him to write another niandra caliber album. I want to hear the spirits consume him again that records kills.
Ghetto house, dance mania, autechre, limewax
Unfortunately it does not seem to me that his current rhcp comeback will last long
Yeah
No idea how you got that from this interview.
Alon Cohen cynics abound
@@irenahalder I'm not cynical I'm a realist
Alon Cohen interested in why you think he won’t be in RHCP for long? Last time was 10 years, no?
