Good job Mark, as always. I like this product, I’m definitely going to look into it more.
Go for it Mark! It’s nice to pack them during your everyday travel.
Nice product review video, Mark. Looks like a very useful filter system for the IPhone!
I’ve been enjoying the line for sure Bruce, and the magnetic option makes them that much more usable.
Woah I didn’t know these existed 😁 magnetic too! looks amazing Mark! Great video as usual buddy
RIght! It’s a brand new product and overall, I’m impressed with the quality. I hope they expand the lineup. I’d love to see a 10 Stop Variable ND Filter and even some non-variable flavors.
I thought you were making a mistake when I saw all the red before you took the pictures, but the results were Incredible! I learned something.
It's always good to check for sharpness!
You have me using my iPhone more and more so I'll have to consider some filters. As Bruce said - nice product review.
It’s impressive how well the quality is, of these current smartphones.
Mr. Houde, Great review of the product. If you were to be using add on lenses for “photography”, which ones (brand) would be your choice. I already have the Sherpa system, except for the Anamorphic. Oh and by the way there is now a 6-9 ND.
Hey Elliot, I hear lots of good things about Sandmarc although I haven't tried them yet - on my list. From the research I've done, they'll give Moment Lenses a run for the money. I'd check them out. www.sandmarc.com/pages/iphone-lenses-shop
Thanks for the video. What camera app were you using in the video? Just ordered this setup for a trip to Italy and looking forward to it. Thanks
You’re welcome. The app is ProCam and will give you much more control over the native app. Enjoy Italy, that sounds delightful! apps.apple.com/app/id730712409
Thanks for your review. Freewell is working fast on its Sherpa line. I've bought the VND 6 to 9 two weeks ago. I didn't even know it wasn't available two months ago.
There is an easy way to distinguish the 1 to 5 from the 6 to 9 filter cases: I put the white Freewell label on the case of the 1 to 5 and the black label on the case of the 6 to 9. I did that for the 62 mm VND filters. But that is not really necessary with the Sherpa filters because the lens cap has a red label saying VND 1-5 or 6-9 so I don't understand why you said there were no indications.
I have the Freewell 62 mm VND filters and used it with Beastgrip tele lenses (the 2.0 with a step up ring and the 1.7 on its own) . I used the Sherpa VND filter last week and maybe it's my imagination but I thought it to be better than the 62mm filter. I guess it's possible because the 62 mm was designed for photographic cameras whilst the Sherpa VND filters was designed specifically for iPhone lenses.
I really don't like the phone case. I think it's the weak point of the Sherpa line. It's not a strong, military graded case. It's just a hard case and it's too smooth so it is easy to slip from my hands and no good if I want to shoot with the phone only, no handles or rigs.
Let's put it that way: I will use the case only when shooting with Freewell filters otherwise I will use either my Beeeasy case which I think is the ideal phone case for iPhone shooters or a UAG case I have as well. Pathfinder line.
I tried the UAG Monarch Pro made with Kevlar. Military grade, 7.6 m drop. It's stronger than any other case in the market. It's the stronger phone case in the planet,
Unfortunately, I am sending it back because it's extremely difficult to remove the phone from the case. I even feel that I am going to break the phone. It's a gross oversight of UAG. They should know better than making a case like the Kevlar one seeing that people buy iPhone Pro because of the lenses and many will use the phone professionally so they need to regularly remove the phone from its case to put it on a Freeweel, Moment or Sandmarc case or in a Beastgrip or Smallrig cage.
Phone cases are extremely important but I don't know why ALL lenses/filters manufacturers are producing very weak cases to use with a very expensive phone and expensive lenses and filters. I tried Moment, Sandmarc and now Freewell. I am sorry to say but all their phone cases are rubbish and create the need to have a second case if you care about your phone and if you sometimes want to shoot real handheld.
I have no use for an anamorphic lens and wish I could get rid of my Beastgrip MK2 anamorphic lens now that I don't have 58 mm filters anymore. But Freeweel will be releasing a tele lens after summer or so they told me. If their tele lens is as good as their filters then I will pack my bags and move from Beastgripland to Freewell land for good. I can't keep buying a new Beastgrip cage every time that Apple releases an iPhone that is on purpose (more sales of Apple's cases) slight bigger or smaller than the previous one, that is, all iPhone Pros.
I use the Sherpa line with a handle and a Sennheiser phone holder but if I am shooting an interview, for example, I will use the universal Small rig cage that lets me keep the phone in Freewell's no good phone case and put on a camera shotgun, light and audio mixer. I couldn't do that with Freewell's selfie grip so I have no use for it and won't be buying it.
I hear ya, there’s never the perfect system. Freewell is pretty good for listening to their customers feedback and making changes / improvements.
I’ve been impressed with the engineering and design of their latest offerings and I believe we’ll continue to see them build off these - I hope anyway.
The grip is great but we careful putting on a standard Apple case-- my leather case got ripped and I scratched the phone when the clip pushed against the corner too hard-- more my fault than Freewell but we more aware than I was.
Awe geez, I'm sorry to hear that Chicago Bob. The grip does have a strong spring and I've almost had my phone slip from my hands while installing the grip. Are you enjoying the kit and filters?
Is it better to buy 6-9 stop vs 1-5? Outdoor
Great question. Start by asking yourself how you plan to use them. Video, Stills, or both? For outdoor video, if you’re shooting at higher frame rates, then the 1-5 should suffice. For standard video (24fps) and harsh mid day light, 6-9 may be the better choice. For stills, the 1-5 will handle most waterfall silky smooth exposures. For longer exposures and ethereal looking images, a 6-9 would be preferred.
In short, perhaps buy the 1-5. You can always buy the 6-9 down the road if you find a need worth having it in your kit.
Blue and gold anamorphic, Which to choose and why?
Oh man, great question. I have the blue and often wish I had the gold. It really comes down to preference and what you're shooting. I think the gold would certainly be better for sunrise/sunset scenes, but the blue might be better for cityscapes and to give a cooler tone.
Is the freewell mount compatible with others like moment or smallrig?
Not M-Mount compatible or with other brands, i.e. moment or sandmarc, smallrig, etc. Sorry man, we invest in these smartphone lenses and accessories, and then discover we can't use them when we want to upgrade. A bummer for sure, understandable I guess, but certainly not consumer minded.
What are the best settings for a sunrise with the sherpa?
Hi Tribalart, what are looking to create, and with what filters, snow mist, variable ND, anamorphic, etc? Are you using a 3rd party app like ProCam?
What app are you using for shooting?
ProCam. Check the comments. I shared the link many times. 👍🏼
I wonder what gimbal can handle this setup ?
Great question. I use a DJI gimbal (think it's the 5) but it's on the edge and occasionally flops when using the sherpa or any lenses on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
I'd check out Zdenka Darula's channel. She often does gimbal reviews and such - I love her stuff, great UA-camr. www.youtube.com/@ZdenkaDarula
What application is used to record?
Hey Jordan, the app is ProCam and you can get it here. apps.apple.com/us/app/procam-8/id730712409
What app are you using for it ??
ProCam: apps.apple.com/us/app/procam-8/id730712409
What app is that for recording???
ProCam. You can find it here: apps.apple.com/us/app/procam-8/id730712409
Hi! What is the name of the App you are using?
Hi Stitch, I meant to share that in the video and it got overlooked. The app is ProCam. apps.apple.com/app/id730712409
@@MarkHoudePhotography Thank you Mark!
Can you stack the filters on the phone?
I checked with/ Freewell and they decided no.
Missed this, sorry man. Unfortunately, no, none of the filters are stackable. ☹️
Still a great kit but could have been better.
What app is that been used at 11:10 ??
The app is ProCam and will give you much more control over the native app. apps.apple.com/app/id730712409
No need to waste money on the Sherpa. Just get yourself a new case, 55-58mm step up ring, 58mm cpl variable nd and some mist filters. Just hot glue the step up ring to new case. Bam whole set up for about the price of one Sherpa filter.
I certainly like your passion for ingenuity! Hey, why not.
It is a fashion since maybe 2 months that we see the right ear of the speaker. Almost all youtubers do it. Very annoying. Only the right ear. Are they ashamed of their left ear?
I laughed when I read this and began wondering if it actually holds any truth. One thing is for sure, I owe it to you to make a video showing my left ear. I am left-handed after all. 😂😜
Thanks for watching!
PLEASE DO NOT MISLEAD VIEWERS !!!! The iPhone DOES NOT record RAW ie Pro Res RAW........ its LOG ONLY !!!!!!! You are no expert and make yourself look like an idiot, but enjoyed your info so thanks
Hi @xtra4u210, thanks for watching. I don’t shoot LOG, and I certainly don’t shoot Pro Res video. Never have, the files are much too large.
With that said, it’s pretty clear I never mentioned shooting raw video and I certainly didn’t mislead my viewers.
What I did say however, is that I shoot Pro RAW images on the iPhone and I happen to be an expert shooting Apple iPhone ProRAW photographs. As the video clearly demonstrates as I photograph the cascade in the video.
I appreciate the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed it, I certainly sense your passion lol, and that’s a good thing!
As for calling me an idiot… not cool, I do often botch through my videos lol, but I certainly know what I’m talking about.
You clearly stated RAW in filming as implied IMHO . That is is irresponsible even if misunderstood vy viewers. Should NEVER have been stated, it's available in Photography but NOT IN VIDEO. You were ambiguous then, and you should correct your video please for the benefit of others, as this leads to sales that benefit Apple, for the wrong reasons
Fair enough, if you perceived it as "filming", rather than "still photography", then maybe others have too. I'll review the video for the matter. That said, my channel is Photography Centric and always has been. I don't make videos about filming and most of my audience knows that. Regardless, I do appreciate the feedback.
Please dont take offense, easy mistake in misjudging your audience, we video fellas pounce on any helpful videos Iphone 15 related especially with cages, grips filters etc. and we dont go beyond what is is n the clip on any need to subscribe , juts tips or opinions etc cheers
