All of the perfection of digital signal processing these days, and what makes the track sound 'nice' is the noise, distortion, reduced dynamic range and saturation from an analogue tape recording.
Same with photography, trying to recreate that analogue feel with filters and such. I’ve a £3,500 Sony camera which I put a filter on the front of the lens to stop it being as sharp and have that film look 😂
If I had a pound for every time I danced the classic arm waving acid house dance to this I'd be producing UA-cam videos from a studio full of equipment..
Not trying to show my age but this track is from an era when EDM was more pure, raw and kind of by the seat of your pants production. Quantitization? Right lol. Those pioneer producers just made music that felt and sounded right. Not any of this goofy over processed, effects laden, ear candy crap you hear nowadays.
Such an amazing track, some of the most incredible moments in my life were spent dancing to this, it evokes memories of my late brother and I just grinning at eachother lost in the sound :( A melancholy tune for me now, I love, it brings me joy mixed with with a little sadness, amazing track.
Hi. Chicago House Head here. I have danced to this so many time. And your channel with this track came up in the algorithm because I was listening to t he original. Your breakdown was fun. And like you I prefer the vocal version. And you're 100% correct in that the tape sound makes the biggest difference! I'm not into this producing thing but thought I'd give it a watch. We sometimes get over protective, us old school folks, and I wanted to make sure it was being represented correctly. LOL Much respect! I did remember that in the U.K. House took off big time back in the 80's. It's so wonderful to see it still alive in some form across the pond. Cheers!
I've tried remaking this several times. One of the problems I initially had is that several of the releases (and UA-cam versions) are "out of tune", as they appear to have been sped up. I think Larry played it in A minor, but the master was varispeeded up so the released version is halfway between A and A sharp. So whenever I tried to play along to the reference track, mine always seemed too "dull" and off key. Larry's drums are also about 50 cents sharper than typical 909 samples which makes them sound a bit more cutting.
Undoubtedly one of the proper classics of house music ,I’m a absolutely a old house/ techno head .The simplicity of house music it what makes it so good it’s total grooves ,love your recreation’s of some of the tracks you choose I feel like your looking through my record collection and pulling out the classics…..maybe your get to Break For Love by Raze,Strings Of Life by Derek May or go on a few years to Energy Flash by Joey Beltram.
Close but no Cigar Dude!?? The bass line is a bit wrong!!?? To high? & The strings are off!? I've still got it in Wax & played it against your video, & yours is good but a bit off melody clash!!?? 🤔🙄 Nice try!!??🤔👍👊 Respect anyway!🤔👍👊👊
Although Beyonce used a traditional House beat with deep vocals, this beat would've been betterfor "Break My Soul" with the second verse played at after the crowd cheering. Her vocals singing the chorus, IMO.
Each time you played a new part I got them goosebumps all over again, this track will be played at my funeral on the way in 💪 Roy Ayers Everybody loves the sunshine on the way out ❤️🏆
This is my funeral music. This and High on Hope (long hot summer mix) by Microglobe. After the wacky intro bit when the nice cloud choir bit comes in of course :)
A classic. Thanks for breaking this down. The honest simplicity of the time makes the track a tune, the basic technology and the tapes give the tune some style and signature but it’s those simple chords that give it it’s charming almost sorrowful Detroit beauty. It’s the man as much as his machines.
i had the crowd pumping way back and threw this on. the resident DJ almost ripped it off the 1200s. not fast enough, he says. it turned out ok. it was fast enough.
As a 51 year old ex raver from back in the day I love what you do, What a great recreation… there are just so many tracks I would love you to cover I can’t wait to see what unfolds.. here’s a few - voodoo ray , hallucinogen, Orange Theme, Energy Flash, French Kiss, Age of Love, Your love Prodigy, I could go on and on and on ❤❤
@@awkwardtom you’re right 😀 life changing times for many of us back then that those crazy memories and feelings we will take to the grave. naughty naughty very naughty 😂😂
Interesting - I've always played the first chord as, - G B C E - I'm probably wrong though, I usually am... superb channel btw love to ALL, feel no hate
I start the pads with the jazzy A minor (add 9) voiced as ABCE. That B in the middle rubs up against the A and C to make it sound more interesting than a basic A minor triad. It sounds ridiculous to have a favourite chord, but mine is Amin9 because of this track. I don't understand it, but playing those four keys near each other evokes so much emotion for me. That said, I think the real magic in this track is that the bassline starts on the offbeat. It gives the listener a moment to feel the weight of that 909 kick and tom, and it's a "trick" that is seldom used by modern DAW-using producers as we all naturally put our first bass note right on the first downbeat.
While working on another remake I've changed my mind on this and now agree with IanTanner above. The first sustained chord may still be an Am9 (with the A played in the bass or perhaps not at all, as the actual bassline is built on A to maintain the sense of key), but the top four notes of the chord seem to be GBCE, like Ian said, which happens to be an inversion of C major 7 (CEGB) as well as being 4 of the notes in the jazzy Am9 (ACEGB) played as an inversion. FM7 and Em7 in root positions seem standard for the other two chords. You can add a low F under FM7 and a G or E under the four notes of Em7 for extra phatness, but I think the pads on the record are actually quite thin and have the bass end rolled off to leave room for that thumping 909 kick and tom-tom, and the epic bassline groove. In short, to get a quick approximation of the actual record's pads, try GBCE - FACE - EGBD.
brilliant. id love to seem more of these classic rave era ones but possibly going deeper into the rabbit hole as it were. when people mention "classic house" you always get the same tracks that appear on compilations but rarely mentioned are the tracks that reall glued those dj sets together back in the day that dont get much credit. it would also be cool to see a hole thread of producer specific breakdowns like kevin saundersons work and for a uk twist how about baby ford.? edit: also how about new fast automatic daffodils "big" jon dasilva mix
That was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING mate! I'm going to be a supporter pretty damn, soon, I found this track by accident just scrolling, I knew the track from my rave days, and to see you break it down so well, deconstruct it, its truly wonderful! That "tape" bit is so class, lol
Its simple and basic something a beginner would write who has spiritual emotions..and good ears for drums..I started making tracks like this in mid eighties and have a few good ones..cheers to Larry's vibe
I met this masterpiece thanks to GTA San Andreas, one of the radios called SF-UR (San Fierro [Fictional city of the game based on San Francisco] Underground Radio), a radio FULL of underground electronic music from the 80s and 90s, including this absolute banger
The "can you feel it" completely changes the vibe of the track. We can prefer one or the other but saying its better with that in it kind of misses why anyone would bother noticing this track enough to change it anyway.
Very cool episode. . Funnily enough I've recently dug up some old gear and been dumping DAW tracks to my Fostex R8 tape machine - well worth the time, and sounds GREAT .. Love your show - best on UA-cam. The Russian Dude is also worth a watch in 2022. ..
I’m very disappointed you didn’t use real hardware instead used plug-ins. I think I felt sort of misled by the intro of this video. Either use the hardware or nothing at all when you’re re-making a quintessential seminal deep house track from Larry Heard Mr. Fingers. Hey mate, love the vid. Just wondering, would you know what setting on FF Saturn or Ozone would emulate the Satin you used? I've got a few tape plug ins but not Satin. Top work...
Please do something from Yello's second album Claro Que Si. Daily Disco would be so interesting to see broken down. Loving this series so much. Brilliant 🙂
interesting video, musically, but a pity you are playing the vocal remix with the various vocal samples such as the jacksons on it. the remix was released in 87, the original, was you said, '86. i doubt larry had any input in that inferior version.
Amost all the house and techno dudes back in the day recorded to cassette or tape. 4 track, or 8 track, whatever they had. Drexciya being a good example. So I'm not sure why this is a huge secret.
You should have introed with a snip of the original tune. I thought this was going to be about the Michael Jackson (Jackson 5?) song of the same name 😂
Unfortunately, the releases of this classic are a total mess. Lots of bad vinyl rips everywhere with distorted cymbals (on streaming and for download). The only non-distorted version is the one on the Amnesia album, although that one is slowed/pitched down a bit for some reason, and the opening drum/bass hit is missing. Very odd. I wish someone would do a proper remaster.
Interesting, thanks. For me it would be even more interesting to see & hear it done on an actual physical Juno synthesiser & 909 drum machine. So, if anyone has done such a thing, please reply with a link to it. I'm very curious! 🙂
I know nothing about music production, but it's funny you say it's too loud at one point. Because as a House fan, I feel so many UK producers 'get it wrong' by making things sound too clean and level compared to US producers.

Great video thanks ! The first chord is 100% A minor 7th add 9th. It’s a common “cool” chord shape. A in the bass left hand , right hand minor 7 G, 9th B , C flat 3rd, E 5th .
I'm pretty sure the low 'A' isn't played so the progression would be CMaj7 / FMaj7 / Emin7 - but as you have said, the 1st chord ( CMaj7 ) is in 2nd inversion and played as G/B/C/E - it's a pretty common progression and if you play keyboard, it makes sense as the fingers ( no pun intended ) have little work to do. Great vids btw @GyuBeats. Subbed. :)
