When I was a DJ at my student Union (late 90s, early 00s), I always ended the night with this. It's a perfect ending as everyone is clearing out of the bar
“It’s terrible as a dance tune because how do you mix out of it?” Incorrect. It was never intended to be mixed out of. It was always intended to be the last song of the nite. Orbital winding down the BPM was their way of saying this. btw: these tune breakdowns are unreal. Don’t stop!
Yeah you might be right. I also think that Orbital make pieces of music, not just 'dancefloor' tracks, so they're not so concerned with things like that. Thanks btw!
You can mix out of it perfectly if you know what you are doing - there is a moment the tempo reverts back but not all the drums are back in the pattern - listen to Saha execute it perfectly back in 1991 on the mix ua-cam.com/video/DUwjibFudGA/v-deo.html at 21.30 mins in - he mixes in the Shaker Song that uses the same drum sounds that bounce off each other and compliment the transision from one track to the next. I used to mix Last Rhythm out if it and that worked great too
I’ve been waiting for 30 years for a musician to explain practically what my ears and soul were feeling. I always knew it was that 3rd note that did it and now I have confirmation. I love you man, thank you so much
Belfast is a simply beautiful track, almost weep-worthy. Your amazing deconstruction not to mention your usual excellent delivery just keeps me coming back. Thank you.
Man ! What a track 🙏 reminds me of driving back from Manchester on the M62 at 6 in the morning with the sun just coming up.... Ultimate come down track 😎✌️
Absolutely "less is more". Even when I grew up making music in the 90s ``limited" by the gear I had, not so long ago I fell into the trap of adding too many sounds on my tracks, because I have more gear and tons of VST and I never liked the mix. It was super busy, like a crowd of instruments fighting to find a place, and at that moment was when I realized that all these beautiful tracks were made with less instruments and that's why you can listen to this records again and again without ear fatigue, so now I´m working only with the minimal sounds I need, and usually turning off more things in the mix, and it sounds much better. Thanks for the video! It's helpful to break down these tracks to understand why they sound so good.
You absolutely nailed it man! Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s so cool seeing your breakdowns and commentary along the way. Would never have known the Wavestation was used in so many Orbital records!
Great vid. I’m not a musician, but I love the way you break it down. Real skill to make a song like this. Massively enhances my own appreciation for the track.
I remember hearing this track on someone's tape and he didn't know who it was, several years later I came across this group and heard the track. Always brings back memories for me, such a sublime track
I was watching your other videos and was thinking of commenting and asking you to make one for belfast. And then i found it! This is my favorite track of all time and i can’t wait to watch this video of yours!!
Another great breakdown Guy and a really good recreation of this seminal Orbital track. You really got the essence of what makes this a beautiful track for me, and what makes Paul such a genius - making complex arrangements using simple instruments. His use of overlapping offbeat rhythms is Orbital's signature and is instantly recognisable.
Awesome! I like how instruments mellow together. Can you also work on how FSOL's Papua New Guinea was made? One of my old school favorites. It has that cool Bass line, and some cool insane synth!
Gyu's already made one! But UA-cam struck it down. So he re-upped with JUST his recreation and no original audio. And they struck it again. He talks about it (with no music at all!) here - ua-cam.com/video/eF1bw-RbUMk/v-deo.html - and the full video is available separately with Patreon
Nice breakdown! Despite the apparent simplicity, the loping 909 pattern and the polymeters (3 and 5 against 4) give it a richness and subtlety that suit the emotional vocals. It’s nice to see that Orbital are still making great tracks: their latest collaboration with Sleaford Mods (Dirty Rat) was released just a few days ago and it’s an absolute banger.
Quick tip which you probably already know - whenever you want to play clips/samples without any Ableton Live processing, make sure the "warp" button is off. I just noticed you had it on for the vocal sample, hence this comment. Anyway, great re-make!
This track is one of my favourites, good to meet you yesterday and see first hand your passion for music and sampling, black Van man if you are wondering 👍👍
Real oldskool classic ive still got it on record when woolworths were in the high street and sold vinyl. Those that remember that brilliant shop. Its definitely a beautiful mellow minimum paced track.
Amazing! Again. And another massive tune. Love the bit about adding manual automation, totally agree, I always try to add some live tweaking done by feel in all my tracks.
Just discovered your channel after searching literally for "Orbital belfast how was it made" haha, been playing about with my synth again, looking for some vids/breakdowns to learn from. Great stuff! Thanks
Brilliant as usual Gyu. Well done. Discovered this track back in the day thru the Wasted vocal version on a magazine cd. Think I still have that somewhere. Go well. B. ps Loving Orbital + Sleaford Mods collab.
I first met Phil Hartnoll at a house party and I told him how much I loved Belfast. He talked me all through how he made it while I sat at his feet enraptured. I was somewhat refreshed.
@@GyuBeats I've since spent a lot of time with him and he's a really lovely guy. He'll be happy to tell you about anything Orbital related if you find yourself in his presence.
I think you're really great! What you're saying here about simplicity made me think of Underworld - Born Slippy. Would love to see a 'How Was It Made?' episode on that track. I'm convinced there's some black magicks happening on those drums.
Fab. Just a genius tune. The greatest. I recently noticed elements inspired by Belfast in the TSHA track "Dancing in the Shadows" and I wondered if she'd tried to sample it or gone straight to her own take on things?
Loving your content and insights, thank you for taking the time for putting these together. utterly enjoyable. Look forward to many more. Always felt that Gat Decor - Passion (original version) was a masterclass in crip and clean production that makes one of the piviotal house tunes. Would love you to delve in to that one. Same with Future Sound of London - Paupa New Guinea. Lol i could go on :) Continue to be awesome and stay safe.. much love
Much appreciated! I'll have a look at gat decor :) I did do a Papua New Guinea one which got blocked completely. It's available for my patrons on Patreon - www.patreon.com/gyubeats
@@GyuBeats Thanks for the reply, hope you are well and having a good weekend. Shame about PNG. Hope you will enjoy Gat Decor, the production values are just so high, at least in my uneducated opinion :), Stay awesome
Alright pal!? Brilliant as your usual self I see...couple of questions. Where's your gaff in the UK? if I come overseas again to visit my brother we'll take you for a pint of lager. And if you ever get time can you have a go at The Chemical Brothers, Galaxy Bounce or Hoops. I also noticed that sometimes when you hit a certain groove, you make an almost duck like face...Bwahaahaaa, I know l make the same face.....and I know that feeling....wouldn't change it for the world. Keep it up pal, you do inspire and educate the masses.

Couple of belfast mixes released as part of 30 something album are phenomenal. ANNA ambient remix, Yotto remix, David Holmes remix. Breathtaking.
I've heard this as the last tune of so many nights - from hardcore raves in the 90s to house nights and after parties in the 2020s - never gets old
It was the last tune at our wedding, that was pretty special
Got back into Orbital again recently... Lush 3-1 into 3-2. Sublime.
Lush
Impact.

The vocals is from the gothic composer and abbess Hildegard of Bigen's "o cuchari'. Orbital's Belfast is music that once heard has never left.
This is the track which made me fall in love with electronic music when I was at high school, one night listening to the radio in the 90s...
What an absolute classic. I first heard this on the film human traffic and it summed up the morning after a really great night out.
Belfast is a simply beautiful track, almost weep-worthy. Your amazing deconstruction not to mention your usual excellent delivery just keeps me coming back. Thank you.
I always wondered why it was called Belfast and now I know thank you sir.
Anthem. Loved the use of it “ on the drive home from the after party” in Human Traffic too.
Btw, found your channel yesterday and BIIINGING
Great movie!

Dude I’m dance music less is more. The kick and bass should work all on their own. Then add the tasty bits!
One of the best 90's rave track ever made, brings back so many memories....quite emotional too ha ha!
It's such an iconic tune. I remember Pete Tong playing it as a tribute when Back2Basics DJ Ali Cooke died back in 1993.
An early morning favorite. The Sasha Vs The Light Remix of this classic is an absolute monster as well.
YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!
Such a massive tune. The way you dissect the the track is incredible & you make it look so easy to reproduce!
Aw thanks!
really enjoying these videos. well done

and just when you think they couldn't make this song better.. there's a version with vocals. Great channel btw
Great job Well done!
What a truly beautiful track! Your video shows how much work it takes to create something which sounds so uncomplicated and ethereal.
I remember hearing this track on someone's tape and he didn't know who it was, several years later I came across this group and heard the track. Always brings back memories for me, such a sublime track
Absolute bliss of a track
Another great video, I always loved the vocal version of Belfast "Wasted" really added to the tune

Great breakdown! Always had to assume the slowdown was a manual/live thing but love to see it being discussed :)
Love to see you do an early severed heads track.
Love what you're doing.
Incredible. Bravo sir.
Another great track you’ve done! Legendary song! Thanks for your work
Belfast is indeed a classic. A really interesting journey into it’s creation, thank you.
It really is! thanks very much :)
This is so good, really appreciate you doung this. Thank you!
This used to be a warm-up tune when I was DJing back in the day when this was released. Such a fantastic piece of music...
loved it on its original release, loved it in human traffic - loving this excellent re-creation, well done....

Loved this in Human Taffic after they're coming back from the club all on a comedown.
Great tune great video
Amazing track ...Anna ambient mix... saved my life this remix..
Anna is great 🙂
She sings how to say it. The opening words to the song are "O Euchari" (O St. Eucharius)
Amazing.
Great job on a Perfect Song!
