  • 12 Monarch butterflies eclosed in my garage nursery this morning, but as it was stormy all day, I waited until late afternoon to release them, when the shone beautifully in the northwestern sky on the longest day of the year. How appropriate for the summer solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere.

    I like that you at least try to put them on flowers and release them in a beautiful garden area close to nectar. I'm so grateful you did that. ❤️ I watched another butterfly release in a comsoplitan area. And, I wondered what in earth are those folks thinking?

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  2 роки тому +3

      I am not sure, but maybe they're releasing on roof-top gardens or public parks?

    Beautiful!
    Don't hold them in wings. They're scales are gonna fall down

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  3 роки тому +8

      Butterflies have hundreds of scales per square millimetre, and they are shed naturally over the lifespan of the butterfly. Holding the wings won't necessarily cause the scales to come off, but even if they do, the butterflies have so many scales that it will not impede their ability to fly. And I only ever hold the butterfly very carefully and very briefly before I release them to the skies. Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comments. :)

    Question: I thought picking them up by their wings can damage them? But I noticed that's how you moved those last four. Is it safe???

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for asking that question. Butterfly and moth wings are formed of thousands upon thousands of scales made up of a keratin-like protein called chitin. They’re designed to rub off easily, which helps prevent butterflies from getting trapped in, say, spiders’ webs. So yes, handling them by their wings does rub off some of these scales, as does pretty much any activity whereby the butterfly brushes against a surface, but I avoid handling them much, other than when releasing them or moving them when absolutely necessary. I grasp firmly but gently, without rubbing, and anything that might come off from this type of handling should not affect their flight.

      Moises M That’s so great! Planting flowers native to your area and ones that bloom at varying times throughout the spring and summer is a wonderful idea. Best of luck to you - I hope you attract lots of butterflies and other pollinators!

    I also raise monarchs! They’re so cute. I love how when the bigger caterpillars walk their little black extensions on their body flop and derp around. Sad that their population has plummeted! :(

    I raised around 10. It’s best to bring them inside a cage like this cause I lost some to wasps and geckos ! Grow LOTS of milkweed !

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  4 роки тому +2

      Wild Otter I agree 100%! The best things that you can do are to grow lots of milkweed and to not use chemical insecticides in your yard, and try to discourage your neighbors from using insect killers. Not only will the monarch population benefit, but also other moth and butterfly species, as well as birds that feed on their caterpillars. Best of luck to you!

    I need help!! My 7th butterfly is out of his shell (I don’t now the right word for it in English) when I wasn’t at home and I noticed that he has some of the shell (/skin I don’t know) on his head and he tries to take it off but he can’t. What should I do? And I need to release them tomorrow because I am for two weeks not home

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  2 роки тому

      It may not be a problem. That "shell" is called a chrysalis in English, and it is what protected the butterfly when it was in the pupal stage. Once the adult butterfly ecloses (emerges) from the chrysalis, the remains of that chrysalis can even be called an exuvia. Can the butterfly fly? Is the proboscis fully fused, and can the butterfly unfurl it to feed? If "yes" to both those questions, then the butterfly should be fine to release. If either answer is "no", then it might be a wise idea to euthanize the butterfly, as it would not be able to survive. I hope it works out for the best.

    I’ve got some butterflies about to come out of their cocoon. I live in North Carolina. Currently, None have the flowers in my garden have sprouted yet. I’m worried if I release them they’ll starve. Should I release them somewhere close to the woods or flowers?

    • @doridantoo
      @doridantoo  2 роки тому

      Are there flowers blooming anywhere nearby? I'd try to find something in bloom and release as close as possible. Butterflies do have an uncanny ability to find just what they need. Best of luck!

      I do too but tachinid flies and Black Death and trichogramma wasps and anal prolapse and failing natural chrysalis gluing have been problems... only 4 out of 125 hatched so that is almost 3 percent but with disinfectant and picking off tachinid eggs and using super glue for regluing the trend will increase
      Over here the natural survival rate is about 1 percent
