I had a nose to nose argument with the owner of Tunecore many years ago, this was about how song publishing, and how he wasn’t taking care of artists, in the end it was clear he was trying to advantage of the possible naivety of artists, so I dug down into his company as it was back then, and it seemed clear, he was scamming artist, so his now multi million dollar company is just doing this on a bigger scale, and now along with Bandcamp I can see a class action, but after speaking to the CEO, I would expect the company would fold before any payouts!
The problem is that people still don't understand how the industry cogs work. Grimes is signed to I think a Major Label, & even if she doesn't release music she's still in that contract. Any song someone sends in will pass through the Major Labels & they will exploit it if they can. 99.9% of independent artists can't bring about a lawsuit, they don't have the resources. Here's the other problem. If you open your mouth too loud, your name will be blacklisted & you will be seen as a problem. The labels won't tell you this they'll just do it & you'll be left wondering why you aren't getting anywhere. As long as people chase that big industry dream you'll be constantly picked off & exploited. PS. I was in & around the industry in the late 90's & nothing has changed, it's just done in a new way.
This has happened to me with beat stars distribution as well. Thanks for your testimony and video, really makes a difference when artists collaborate to protect one another.
If I remember correctly, Tuncore was started by some dudes from bands I loved in the 90s. No idea if they're still there. I put out a couple records there back in 2003 to like 2010ish. I left when other services cropped up that charged an annual fee for infinity releases, while Tuncore was still charging a per release fee. I'm with Ditto now, with a couple things on Distro Kid. Ditto offered a family plan for my various projects and paid in Euros when I signed up. Since Brexit, they pay in Pounds now. Still usually slightly higher than the dollar. I've had a few issues with release getting rejected. Ditto does have human customer service agents. Their agreeability varies, but I usually find I can get a list of specific, fixable, issues on specific tracks. (demand a timecode) One album they refused to release, I simply posted as singles. All of which went up without issue as individual songs.
Interesting! Thank you for sharing your experience as well. It's amazing how even talking to an actual person (human agent vs auto-generated responses) can assist in leaps and bounds. Appreciate you watching!
Thank you for this report. I am sorry for your bad experience, but thank you very much for sharing this. We are producers and handle a variety of artists. We like to assist whenever possible, and this is exactly the type of educational feedback we like to learn from, so we & our clients can all avoid tossing our hard-earned income to the wind. Your sacrifice is appreciated; hopefully, someone out here will pay you back in kindness.
Sounds like fraud. Or basis for a Class Action Suit if you will find an attorney to take the case, start asking around the legal community. Check their terms agreed to when signing up... ?Arbitration Clause? Regardless of the payment refund.

I saw an interview with Grimes recently where she briefly mentioned that she had done this thing with AI that she had been really excited about, but it ended up being a disaster, and she seemed pretty bummed about it, but didn't elaborate. I'm curious if this was part of why.
@DESHPLEASEMUSIC I just tried to find it, and I couldn't. My apologies. I could have sworn it was this video: ua-cam.com/video/dv5UUH4cZeU/v-deo.htmlsi=LDGKYNrAFTQV6LWr I tried going through it and seeing if that was it, but I didn't see it in that. However, later in the video she talks about "another failed project" but there doesn't seem to be an earlier point in the video where she mentions anything like that. I remember in the video she starts going on a tangent (as she does) about how she had this whole idea and project involving AI and AI Avatars (they showed a picture of the avatars), but then goes on to say that it failed. I must be misremembering which video it was. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
@@mikasasukasa8790 no worries! maybe in your watch history? either way, I found this interesting as well, ty for sharing! dang i respect her so much for all she's accomplished. a true artist for sure
@DESHPLEASEMUSIC I checked my watch history! Oddly, nothing of hers came up before August, and I think I watched it before then. Even searching UA-cam I can't seem to find many interviews with her anymore. I'm unsure if it just isn't on UA-cam anymore or if I just haven't looked hard enough, but I'm fairly certain it was just like one of those Vanity Fair interviews. It was just among a bunch of other Grimes-related stuff I watched that day, so I don't remember specifically what it was. If I ever find it again I'll let you know!
Really hope more people will see this. What happened with you is unacceptable. Thank you for letting the world know, and all the best to you i your creative life!
Jared lost his job at Subway, gained back all the weight in jail, couldn't find a job anywhere but Tunecore and now he's taking his angst out on innocent indie artists.
@tunecore I use their service, but this is making me reconsider. Great video ! Sorry this happened there are many smaller distributors we’re literally spoiled for choice.
Thank you, I'm glad you found this video informative and helpful! Yeah I'm currently using DistroKid and happy with them however I know some distributors also offer sync licensing and that's something I'd really like to get into. I might look into some that offer that as well.
Facebook and UA-cam both respond with the same Tech Support emails... no details and way to get more details or understand the issue at hand or how to get through it. These companies get away with it.
CD-Baby basically stole 50% of my friends LIVE Performance Royalties, he performs in Australia, fine print, How do they have any right to an artists LIve Performance royalties? for 2 yrs, Thousands of dollars. Disgusting..he has a family and is a full time musician. Live Performance royalties are the only thing that can really keep us going as an artist, cause streaming doesnt help anything.
omg I'm sorry that happened to your friend! tell your friend to look into SongTrust if they haven't already. That's who I use to collect royalties from all countries.
Live performance royalties are paid through APRA-Amcos in Australia not an aggregate like CD Baby. You need to write down and submit every song played at every gig at end end of the year through your APRA members account. Sounds like your friend doesn't know how royalty systems work, you should educate them so they get paid properly in the future.
So glad you posted this video, My daughter is in an up and coming band and will be using a distributor soon. Thanks to your video we will not have ANYTHING to do with these creep. A pox on them.
thank you for letting me know because i signed up for tunecore and i wanted to release my single. i was despately thinking about paying money for it bc i want to share my work more but after watching your video it made me glad i didn't
I'm glad you found this info helpful! I think it's great you want to share your work and I still encourage that, I just wish I would have done my research before singing up with TuneCore who treated us terribly. I have been using DistroKid to distribute my music to all streaming platforms for over a year now and i'm happy with them. The experience between them and TuneCore has been night and day. I wish you the best with your music! :)
Thanks for this video. It's disgusting the way they behave with artists. I was considering to use their distribution services for my music but, OF COURSE, now I won't.
Distrokid sends me an email every other week threatening to take my music down. But I only have music distributed through them because of the artist I produced the song for. They used their company, not me. Why run a company this way? Was the goal to fail...
wow what the heck! what does TuneCore expect you to do exactly? who knows right? since they don't communicate with their customers at all! does your artists you work with know about this? i can't believe this company keeps getting away with this and how they're still in business tbh
I give you an idea I’m sure you didn’t consider, write 5 songs with titles like NEVER USE TUNECORE , HEADACHE WITH TUNECORE , TUNECORE HARDCORE , BEAT IT BY TUNECORE , etc. release the songs and then, Let’s see if they remain so stoic
Wow! Sorry to hear you had to go through this and thank you for sharing because I was actually considering to switch. I love your video, lighting and sound and your voice too. Thank you and I wish you all the best in all your endeavours
Bravo for speaking out and we'll done with the refund. They really messed up. I'm shocked the singer has not intervened. Thank you for sharing. 👍😊 Does your music distributer pay you Royalties if your song is played in a film etc? Sorry for asking. Just checking as I saw a video that claimed you can loose Royalties with this sort of thing if your with the wrong distributer. 😊
Thank you! I really appreciate you watching! :) So I might do a video talking more about your question because it gets confusing and complicated but to my understanding, your distributer (usually) only handles streaming services and you use someone like SongTrust (this is who I use) for international royalties and then when it comes to film, tv, video games, commercials, etc. its' called "sync" and that's actually something i'm looking into right now! I plan on sharing everything I find out in a video because I think that's one of the hardest things to get into as an indie artist. A lot of confusing info out there so I'm researching to try to find the best way to get into it and will def look into how the earnings work as well but to my understanding, if you do get a placement in a film, etc. you're paid by the sync service (ex. Taxi) but i'm not sure if Taxi is the best or still relevant, it's SO expensive so looking more into that as we speak!
I tried to cancel my subscription but i decided to take down all my songs and cancel my subscription but they still tried charge me a year later 😂 thank god i changed my PayPal acc these a**holes still had the guts to email me saying that they weren’t able to charge my card after I cancelled and took down my music
"tunecore your drunk go home" thanks for the update, what a ride; their problems led to you singing your song, sweet irony at its best. your version made me zone out and forget time. more songs more vids plz
Tuncore has been nothing but toxic, that's why I never associated with them. Same goes for Amuse - both striving to be distribution and playlist curators. I place my trust in DistroKid and CD Baby because, at the very least, your music gets played and heard.
Right??? Imagine... at the very least your music gets played and heard that should be the basics! Why doesn't TuneCore get that?? Yeah i've been happy with both Cd Baby and DistroKid**.

I'm glad you brought this up, I feel like a few distributors could do the same. Onerpm wouldn't even allow me to join as I'm not big enough. (I get that's up to them if that service is for the big boys and girls) but it kinda sucks. Still thinking about offstep.
yeah it's such a catch 22 as an indie artist isn't it? you need to get your music on all the streaming services to help you grow but some won't even take you unless you have a certain amount of plays... but you need THEM to get on the services to get plays... lmk who you end up going with!
@@DESHPLEASE Hell yes and I will do mate, it's a minefield but really depends on what's most important, where it get's distributed? split royalties? Same release on single/ albums etc.
exactly which don't get me wrong it's nice to have options with different distributors for what you need depending on the artist but I still think one day artists won't need a middle man and will be able to go straight to streaming services like Spotify direct@@d05music17
The company gets away with it because the government agency that is supposed to protect consumers against this kind of behavior is doing absolutely nothing about it. Sadly, there are many companies like this.
For the discoverability option, is it a one-time fee or a yearly fee. Meaning if you got 50 songs for example, you have to pay that $0.99 every year for all songs + your regular subscribed artist plan
It's an add-on option per release. So it costs $0.99 per song /year. Definitely adds up but as I mentioned in my video, in my personal experience (as a very small indie artist)I think discoverability is everything and is in most cases "priceless". If you believe in your music and it's just a matter of the right audience finding you I think it's absolutely worth it. Just my opinion but hope that helps!
Thanks I'm trying to to avoid companies like this that take zero responsibility, your so nice I can't do that. Lol add Too lost a waste of money support non aware

I have been with Tunecore since it was started by Jeff and Peter the company founders ... They were however ousted from their company nearly 10 years ago and since then they have become worse and worse.. This is so messed up! I am struggling to want to use any distributor but I do want stuff accessible to my audience. Your video helps a lot thanks girly ❤
I'm so glad it helped! Yeah for sure this makes me wonder how long indie artists are gonna need a "middle man" before we can just go directly to Spotify and other streaming platforms ourselves.
@@DESHPLEASE Hi. Not automatically. There is an option to apply. They have where you can apply for more services but they require more than I have. I think a higher social media following and whatever else they’re looking for. The service I have is for any independent artist. There is no marketing or lyrics added. The artist has to do all that on their own. They request 4 weeks upload before the release date. The help/customer services section I feel is very good too. Hi, what happened to you and Timmie is bullshit. I hope I spelled his name right. Did this happen around the time Spotify dumped 25% of its catalog? Any artist that used A.I. was dropped. The Grimes's A.I. voice may have been the problem, and businesses will not admit they got jammed up. Interesting video.

This true about Tunecord they left artist album in incomplete for months stating there was an issue.. went back to Distro Kid released on schedule… smh 😅
To be honest, I've been with Tunecore for well over a decade and have never had problems such as that which you describe. However, I'm in the process of switching distributors 'cause I'm not interested in funding Tunecore's political activism which they've been pushing hard since 2020. Secondly, Tunecore is absolutely unwilling to distribute cover songs outside the US even in spite of letters from, for example, UK's official copyright organization to explain how UK's technical royalties work. Thirdly, I don't expect to receive promotional mail with expletives in the subject line from a company which is supposed to be professional. I don't even open Tunecore mail anymore.
I'm so sorry for your experience! I understand how much work goes into each song for you to actually get it out the door and no one should have to go through such a negative and frustrating business transaction! edit: and what the heck, can't believe tune core does that! who knew!
right?!
yeah WHO KNEW considering their whole business is suppose to be putting music on streaming services. worst experience ever. 0 stars
Appreciate that info and your insights as well. Ty for watching and sharing your thoughts and experience
Thank you for the heads-up. I have been looking for a distributor for a while now, and your endorsement of Distrokid is comforting.
Thank you for watching! I hope you found this info helpful! I’ve been with Distro over a year now and have never had an issue :)
This has happened to me with beat stars distribution as well. Thanks for your testimony and video, really makes a difference when artists collaborate to protect one another.
least I could do is share my experience and warn others. sorry you had a similar experience!
I hate Spotify, but now I hate tunecore even more… thank god I used distrokid on instinct

I saw an interview with Grimes recently where she briefly mentioned that she had done this thing with AI that she had been really excited about, but it ended up being a disaster, and she seemed pretty bummed about it, but didn't elaborate. I'm curious if this was part of why.
oh wow that is super interesting. can you link me the video by chance?
@DESHPLEASEMUSIC I just tried to find it, and I couldn't. My apologies. I could have sworn it was this video:
ua-cam.com/video/dv5UUH4cZeU/v-deo.htmlsi=LDGKYNrAFTQV6LWr
I tried going through it and seeing if that was it, but I didn't see it in that.

Ty for watching! Least I can do is spread the word :)
Facebook and UA-cam both respond with the same Tech Support emails... no details and way to get more details or understand the issue at hand or how to get through it. These companies get away with it.
So frustrating when you don't know what the problem is or how to fix it and you can't get any assistance!
I suspect they all are scams and using musicians for profit
We have Apra here, we just submit our own gigs..really easy, they dont take anything either. He is now out of that pickle.@@DESHPLEASE
I know already they will take 30% of videos streams which you approve of it while registering, maybe 20% came from tax
How can people actually hold these companies accountable??
Exactly. I'm just trying to spread awareness but I can't believe it's still happening to people every day
just don't give them your money in the first place

Distrokid sends me an email every other week threatening to take my music down. But I only have music distributed through them because of the artist I produced the song for. They used their company, not me.
Why run a company this way? Was the goal to fail...
wow what the heck! what does TuneCore expect you to do exactly? who knows right? since they don't communicate with their customers at all! does your artists you work with know about this? i can't believe this company keeps getting away with this and how they're still in business tbh

Does your music distributer pay you Royalties if your song is played in a film etc?

Yeah i've been happy with both Cd Baby and DistroKid**.

yeah it's such a catch 22 as an indie artist isn't it? you need to get your music on all the streaming services to help you grow but some won't even take you unless you have a certain amount of plays... but you need THEM to get on the services to get plays...
