    I just found your channel. I been self-teaching how to repair old arcades since I own one. I know low activity can be discouraging, but keep going, keep it positive, it'll gain traction. I don't even get family sometime to respond so try not to take it personal. I find your videos highly informative and entertaining, Thank You!

    This chassis has two grounds, a "hot" ground, and a "cold" ground, which is typical in switching power supply designs.
    Most TVs will have the hot and cold sections of the chassis marked, but arcade monitors typically don't have this convenience.

    Thanks for the video, that was cool seeing it work again!

    I have a large 40 inch consumer set where I cant for the life of me fix a pin cushion circuit problem. The horizontal picture is maxed out and adjusting in service menu does nothing. However horizontal position and vertical adjustments work fine. So I’m pretty sure it’s the pin circuit but have no schematics to know where that is

    The golden rule is that after each repair of a monitor, especially when it is older than 5 years, the electrolytic capacitors in the mains must be changed.

    Examining the circuit board for darker areas than others would have saved you a lot of time spent on this repair

    Good video, I had this same issue on a k7000 chassis, HOT went out and took the voltage regulator with it, bad caps in the power supply caused it.

    • @PartScavenger
      @PartScavenger 3 місяці тому

      Hey be very careful with the ez-20 you can get the power and audio plugs swapped and it will blow up both the monitor and the audio board

    I just recapped my monitor and now when I try to power it on, I can't get anything from the monitor. Similar to your video, nothing is coming on in on the monitor. The coils don't light up either. I'm guessing I need to go back and reexamine all my soldering points to make sure I didn't introduce a short?

    • @vodkagobalsky
      @vodkagobalsky 3 роки тому +1

      Okay so I went back to check my soldering work and cleaned some stuff up. It did end up working when I plugged it back in. However, it STOP working after 5 minutes! It just shut off. Any ideas? Could it be a power issue rather than the monitor itself?

    CREATE!, why does an arcade monitors have a B+ voltage for the H&V sync hold circuit? The B+ voltage is a Bias voltage for the H&V sync circuit? but you have to set it at 125vdc which is a big DC offset bias voltage which doesn't make sense to me for the H&V sync hold circuit to work correctly, any reasons why?

    can you explain how the arcade monitor converts the Vertical and horizontal sync signals into X and Y coordinates on the CRT screen. The spirit ROM and Character ROM don't have the X and Y coordinates so how does it get encoded and decoded by the hardware in the arcade monitor?

    You really know what you're doing with CRTs! I have a purple blotch on the bottom left corner of mine, it's just a normal TV, not a true arcade monitor. Now that you mention it, it used to do that de-gausing "thump" but not anymore. I've also bought a degaussing wand, the circular motions didn't help, but randomly flicking the button on the wand at random positions around the screen made it go away temporarily but it comes back. Do you have any ideas?

      @MrHBSoftware 5 років тому

      @@gamingo_gguyverx6812 if you know nothing about the subject refrain from commenting because you may end up wasting peoples time and money...a white line across the screen means failure in the vertical circuit...bad yoke, bad vertical output transistor or IC, or a bad capacitor or open resistor in the vertical circuit...flyback is DEFINETELY not the cause otherwise you would see nothing...dont run the monitor like that for any time or the line will get burned permanently on the phosphour

    Could I ship you a 1994 era 20" sony CRT to see if you can do anything with the focus and convergence? I could even send you some photos of it showing a test pattern. Is that something I could pay you for? I also have a 13" sony CRT built in 2001 I would be interested in being RGB modded. If not is there anyone in the USA you could recommend?
    Thanks!

    Although I agree that this a good video and appreciate the effort, I find your method of tracing very backwards. The first thing should have been a visual inspection, caps, diodes transistors etc. That should have been check 1. We don't see any of those components almost until the end of the video, just the underside of a PCB. Also, CRTs are known to blow transistors and caps quite frequently, that should have been check 2. And if all these fail, only then, voltage tracing should have come. And you do some dangerous things like probing random pins when in diode check mode. Be careful. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi. I own two Commodore crt monitors. The 1701 and 1702 model. Both in perfect shape and working. Would like to keep it that so I was asking myself if there is any need to replace the caps on the PCB? What's your opinion in this?

    • @AshAndCamilleMiller
      @AshAndCamilleMiller 5 років тому

      NiekkieNick recaps are always good for old equipment provided you buy good ones. When I decide I want something forever and it’s not just a project it will eventually get a full recap even down to the little ones. Everything else will basically last unless their is a design flaw like the possible underrated horizontal output transistor in the video. Besides caps and poor design you can run them until the picture tube has seen the end of its days, older picture tubes were usually of much higher quality than those being produced right before the flat screen era.

  • @AshAndCamilleMiller
    @AshAndCamilleMiller 5 років тому

    I’m only 4:15 in, is this a dead power supply? Guess I’ll find out finishing it, working on something you decide you want to live forever I’d plan on replacing every single capacitor, however it would be nice to know the condition of the tube before dumping a lot into it, but most of these capacitors are actually all bad, even in some sets working, I’ve seen some in what someone would call working condition that you would be amazed at how much life a capacitor refresh brought back to the picture. At any rate I doubt this was kept in a cool environment it’s whole life and for the first part of it probably ran non stop so it’s got stressed capacitors.
    That horizontal driver looked cheap as hell, should have used the heavier duty one but I guess they cheaped out on it. It may have not been bad though, testing it in circuit isn’t always going to tell you much about it, the capacitors ESR May have just killed that voltage regulator. Those things can be sensitive, from the looks of it that power supply had been driven hard due to the darkened areas on the board. I would have replaced all large value caps but that’s just me.
