I really like Hosoda Mamoru, and I believe that he's an absolutely brilliant director with the skill of being able to hit some very deep feelings that many can relate to. I think the one thing that does him a disservice is his quirk of always writing more than he can fully flesh out in a movie, which results in many loose ends or unnecessary elements in the movie. I think he shines the brightest as a director when he isn't writing the script, but I can't help but love the themes and meanings that he is able to write. I really like him and I look forward to more of his movies

My condolences to your grandmother's passing. It is always great to see someone who genuinely has a special connection with a family member 2 generations before them. And to have one of your favorite film's context becomes heavier in a personal level... Forgive me for saying it is beautiful in some ways.
This seems like a promise you made for yourself. Let's see you tackle Hosoda's films someday.

Nice to see a fellow Hosoda fan! I've got the Blu Rays for all the Hosoda films except Mirai and Belle.
If I were to rate/review Belle, I'd say that I liked the movie, especially the OST, but I think the writing wasn't as solid as Hosoda's previous films. A lot of came down to the worldbuilding and stakes, because I never really felt that much tension. I found hard to suspend my disbelief, because there were times where how the U technology worked was unclear or contradictory. Like there was a chase scene but in my head I'm wondering, "Why don't they just log off?" Or the time that Suzu was running to a school while her avatar Belle was doing something different and I was wondering how the hell she was doing that. The Justice antagonists were also pretty thinly written and not that believable.
I still enjoyed the film a lot but in terms of the writing, it was lacking. I also wished we had more time for the relationship between the two main characters to develop more because I wasn't really sold on their connection. I will say that Belle is the one Hosoda film where I actually enjoy the Dub over the Sub, where usually I could enjoy both, mainly because the whole Kei's Dad thing just doesn't work for me in the Sub compared to the Dub. I grew up with Asian parents, I was expecting a bit more than just yelling, ya know? Still liked the films and the OST.
Not to say that the Sub is bad, it's not actually, and the criticisms about the plot holes and the writing not being as tight compared to previous Hosoda films still applies, but the lack of language barrier in the English Dub of Belle helped in me connecting more with the characters and story. The voice performances for the Dub were great all around, and one particular performance that I liked was Kei's Father, the abusive one. Hearing the Abusive Dad dubbed in English made me understand and connect more with the abusive dad angle, most probably because of the lack of language barrier and the cultural context of English speakers. Hearing Kei's Dad's rants in the Dub just gave you that visceral, familiar feeling, of being yelled at by a rough parent or being in the presence of someone who was getting abusively yelled at by a parent. It's one of those things where you'll instantly recognize and feel it when you see it. So yeah, for me, the Dub really helped in selling the abusive dad angle through the cultural implication via English. The reason why it didn't really work for me as well in the Subbed version is because like I said, I got Asian parents so I wasn't really convinced. That was definitely the standout improvement in regards to the voice performances, mainly because I'm sure either of us can recall moments where we were in Kei's shoes or were around people in Kei's shoes. Another thing I liked about the voice performances in the Dub that helped me immerse myself more into it was the different accents that people in U had. That really helped sell to me the idea that U was a global phenomenon with 5 billion users all around the world. It also helps that because English is our first language, we can more easily recognize French accented English than we can French accented Japanese. But yeah, the different accents in the Dub was definitely a plus.
Besides that, the English versions of the songs in the film are a bop and because they're in English, it's easier to just vibe to them compared to hearing the Japanese versions of the songs. They really went all out with the English versions of the songs. My criticisms about the writing are still largely the same but I found the Dub to be really good and it helped me more with vibing with the movie more compared to the Sub. I still rate the rest of Hosoda's films above Belle because the writing is tighter in those compared to this and I could still connect to the characters in the same way in both the Sub and Dub versions but Belle is still a good movie that I enjoyed watching in theaters and the songs in both English and Japanese are a bop.

The internet is a means.. methods of virtual surfing.. like highway. It Helps us gets to places faster than streets because of its rules.. allows faster speed, no people, bikes, slo vehicles allowed, no lights to stop unless exiting on the right, but like you get the stupid drivers or poor car breaks downs causing accidents or hold ups from criminals speeding causes blockages for police chases and /or accidents etc.
