Tom Quayle tests for Guitar Interactive Issue 40.

Welcome to GI 40, a very special issue that we've been hoping to bring you... well, since we first planned the magazine!
Brian May is a unique figure in Rock guitar and he has been interviewed on many occasions in many different publications, so when we were finally able to arrange an interview with him, we decided to take a different route. Instead of sending a mere journalist to interview him and his highly regarded tech expert, Pete Malandrone, we sent Jamie Humphries, who as our features explain has a unique inside approach to the Brian May team. We like to think we've produced the definitive Brian May special as a result.
Also on board is Zakk Wylde, making a welcome return to GI, telling us why he's going into the guitars and amps business!
Don't forget the usual abundance of reviews, columns and this issue's stonking competition opportunity to win a complete set of Moog's Minifooger pedals - in our estimation some of the finest effects pedals money can buy!

No regrets purchasing this guitar. It's my favorite one to play.

Hard to tell how the guitar sounds when you're plugged in vs a mic. I own it and recommend it; plugged in or not.

    I own one..love it.
    It us a cannon.
    Your review is good.
    Couple if point,if I may.
One...should have stretched the strings out, before demo.
Very muddy and out of tune.
    Second...
I believe it is tuned down.
No need to do this, with this 12.
It is heavily supported and has double steel truss rods.
Guild and I spoke,in detail, about this, before I purchased it.
I will not own a 12 that cannot be tuned to full concert 440.
That is a deal breaker, for me.
You can tune this bad boy all the way up to 440.
THEN...you want to hear this monster strut it's stuff.
The demo sounds nothing like this guitar sounds,in person.
When I gig this beauty and I break into some Petty,McGuinn,Lightfoot heads literally turn and I am asked about thar guitar,on breaks...even by non players.
Nothing against your demo, except for that.
    You were very informative..

    Hello guys,
I always have been a great fan of Guild acoustic guitars, however never had one, until one day my cousin let me try his 3 models...blown away by its sound, it changed my perspective forever!
Now, I am just starting to learn first and after that, I am going to buy a Guild Jumbo 12 string.
I have been looking online(however didn't find anything solid), I am trying to learn and understand Jumbo models, and specs of each model because I don't know the differences between models.
Basically, my personal taste would be a Guild 12 jumbo full body (non cutaway) all solid, chesterfield logo headstock, solid top(any wood which matches cedar in color?) solid rosewood back and sides, satin-finish neck, discrete inlay(not dots), mother of pearl rosette, but not new.
    Picky huh?
I would like to know which models were available, which types of wood were used back there, inlays available, specs wise and etc.
Can you suggest any link, or provide reading material to learn all the differences between the models? Or even if you can tell me the whole story.
    Thank you so much!
    Best regards,
    Ben.

Was looking at the epiphone 12 string which is super inexpensive but after checking out all the reviews of this guitar I think it's worth taking the plunge..I have a guild from the 80's that I played to death. They really do make great acoustic guitars even if this is made in China.

      Read my posts,above.
      It is a monster.
I don't buy foreign knock offs.
      This IS a Westerly.
Just like back in the day.
Guild would not let them use the name, unless it was EXACTLY like the old Westerlys.
It was part of their deal, with Cordoba.
The only reason I nought it.
      It will blow you away.

      Not necessary,with this 12.
Tons of support for the top and double truss rods.

      Yes.
They are made to full Westerly specs, like in the good old days.
This is what Guild insisted on,in order for it to be called a "Westerly".
      They were very strict,about this.
It is the only foreign guitar that I own.
      It is that good.
Exactly a Guild Westerly,of the past.
Only at a fraction of the price.
Just made, out of the country so it can be had for 1,000-2,000 bucks, instead of 6,000-7,000 bucks.

All this yapping and you can't tell us if it's solid back and sides or if it's a laminate? That seems curiously omitted but you'll tell us it has two E tuners, two A tuners, two D tuners and a tortise pickguard as if we couldn't see... If there's one thing with the world I don't understand its marketing.

    • @vutEwa
      @vutEwa 5 років тому +2

totally agreed. every last review on UA-cam of this guitar is done with full strumming and banging the hell out of it. sheeesh man, these are beautifully sounding instruments until you beat the hell out of it then it's just cacophony. a 12 string should not be fully strummed. you should selectively pick 2 to 3 note chords, and not played hard, played medium at the most. that's what brings out the beauty of this instrument.

No, I'm planning on getting a 1512 next year, as it costs $1,100. The $500 Guild you're thinking of is the 2512, which is an entirely different guitar, with a laminated maple back and sides. The 2512 is quite a good value too, but it does not have the huge bass sound that this model does.
