    The top is solid Sitka spruce, not maple. The B&S are maple laminate. The pickup is fine, although you only get volume & tone controls & there is no tuner. The battery is accessed from next to the jack socket. Overall this is a tremendous guitar and very competitive value for money. Glad I bought mine.

      @PixelJoeGamingHD no problems at all, in all this time i only had to slightly readjust the neck once, and that was after i hadn't touched the guitar for a few months. it sounds killer now that it's opened up properly, and punches well above its price range.

    An excellent review by a guiter player... what you will find with the 12 is that all 6 string guitars will sound hollow from this point foreword. Playing a 12 is akin to having two guitar players at one time playing in harmony. I always default to a 12 if given the choice... in blue grass it provides an excellent fill and an alternative to flat pickin 6 string solos, which eventually sound like rinse and repeat. Lastly Guild has been making jumbo 12s for ages. Its the process(not the country) which produces a fine instrument.. Guild appears to have controlled that process, even in its asian subsidiaries. Face it; musical instrument construction is labor intensive... therefore labor cost becomes the driving factor in instrument construction for the masses...

    I have a Guild 1974 F512 I picked up 15+ years ago. It was sitting in its case and one day I went to grab it, but the headstock had broken off! Had a professionally done be a very experienced luthier. Fixed it beautifully, but he recommends that MOST 12 strings should be tuned a half or full semi-tone low. It’s been fine for 9 years... and I have to admit that the 1/2 tone lower tuning really has improved the guitars sound. I have a L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup that I will be putting in it that I will take out of my Yamaha 12-string (neck needs to be removed and rebuilt, so I’ll just play the Guild more and give the Yamaha a well deserved rest for now!). Do like the Guild sound.

    I've been wanting this guitar because 1. I LOVE jumbos, 2. I want a 12 string and 3. I can't afford anything else. Thank you so much for the great review.
    I am worried about this developing a belly as I've had cheap 12 string guitars do to me before.
    You stated that your first guitar from Musican's Friend had a defect with the pick guard but I have to say that I've owned a couple of Chinese guitars and the pick guard is one of the areas where you can see that they cut corners. I'm the sort of player that doesn't scratch guitars anyway and so, I've always taken the pick guards off of cheapo guitars by heating them with a hair dryer. Then I remove the glue residue with Goof-Off or Goo-B-Gone. I figure that the less stuff keeps the top from vibrating, the better the guitar is going to sound.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 років тому +1

      I think I followed your line of logic exactly!
      I love the way Jumbos really spread out the frequency spectrum.
      It's been a year or so on my 12, and no belly so far. I've been keeping the humidity steadlily at 50% and the tuning lower than standard. I really love how this jumbo sounds in open D.

    Once upon a time, I had an American all maple Guild 12 string built for me, as I'm left handed. At the time ('93 or '94), it was around $1400.-00 I was the most beautiful sounding, but unplayable guitar I ever owned. it shipped with >Medium< strings. 012 to .053. These have about 300 Lbs of tension when tuned to E-r concert pitch. (No rest for wicked hands).
    You probably know by now all the things I'm going to post BOUT 12 strings, particularly jumbos12 strings. So, apologies in advance for telling you things you likely already know.. Perhaps they will be of benefit to another, less experienced player.
    First, you lose some tone with the more standard 12 string "light" sets (.010 to .047). Even those have 240 Lbs of tension tuned all the way up . So, you should keep any acoustic 12 tuned a whole step down, to D-d. It'll live much longer that way.
    I noticed you were sighting the lower bout for convex curvature. A small amount is normal in most acoustics, as long as it doesn't get to the point where the bridge lifts, (That's where the down tuning twelves comes in). Where you can get into trouble with an older guitar, is when the torsional strain on the bridge, causes the top to sink in front of the bridge.(Toward the sound hole)
    Jumbo bodies have enormous lower bouts, and what I've found is that you can almost predict or evaluate the weather, by the overall tuning. A few dry days, and when you pick up the guitar, it might be 30 cents flat across the board. However, a few damp or rainy days, and it's likely to be 30 cents sharp. There's a lot of wood there , and it responds more so than a smaller or 6 string guitar might. One source whom I trust, suggests different saddles for different seasons,
    I know I'm late for the party here, but your new ax sounds great, and a "Happy New Guitar Day" to ya.!

    Dear Eric, I only recently found your terrific tutorials. After 40 years, I found myself loitering on the edge of reality in Texas and out of angst had my old friend from the west coast send me my D-28-12 Martin with which to shuffle of to the illuminated EXIT sign.As someone whose life was ruined by Kottke on hearing the Takoma record, I will allow myself the presumption of suggesting tuning the monster down a step and a half, giving a sound more full and less like a mandolin. You are great whatever you do. thanks

      I had to return my first one after I literally got a splinter on the rough damage to the beading on top. The replacement has a slight fissure on the same area....ever so small but I can live with it. Sounds like a few of these pitch up with imperfections which is a shame as the guitar sounds lovely and being a jumbo fits snug to your body. A pleasure to play, it's my new "go to guitar " for every day. Yeah...I am guilty of buying online a lot....but I don't like buying guitars that strangers have "tried out" before me. I did that with a wife and it ended badly 🤣🤣🤣. Enjoy your Guild ....made to be played. 👍

    Guild have always made great 12 strings and this seems to be no exception. Personally I would like the neck to be even wider! And the size of the body--over 17" wide I think--does put me off a bit, but I suppose that contributes greatly to the sound.

    Eric Haugen, Don't get me wrong, I know what a Guild 12 string is worth and that in many cases, the sound is something you cannot get being disappointed in.....but what I see from the headstock makes me suspicious on whether this guitar stays in tune for a long time, for the strings seem to run VERY tight next to each other, can you tell us more from your experience?

    WOW, if that Guild sounds that great in this video presentation with all of the elements that can break down the sound quality by doing this video and then posting it online, I can only imagine what it sounds like in person! I've been kicking the idea around about buying that particular model but I'm a serious diehard Epiphone man and have been for some 45+ years now and you know what they say about breaking old habits, lol..
    I'm trying to decide on that Guild or simply purchasing the Epiphone DR212 acoustic 12-string and install the Seymour Duncan SA-6 Mag-Mic Acoustic Sound-hole Mic System. It is my professional opinion that nobody makes a better acoustic mic/pickup system than Seymour Duncan so... I'm thinking the 2 combined should make for a serious deep throat-ed sounding acoustic 12-string guitar. The ONLY down-side to this idea is the Epiphone is NOT considered a "jumbo" guitar like the Guild is. What do you think or what is your opinion if you don't mind?

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  7 років тому

      I think you'll be find with the dreadnaught body of the DR212. I tried a bunch of dreadnaught 12s before I got the Guild and they sounded really good too.

    I would have kept the guitar with the defect in the pick guard. That's because on Chinese guitars, I just hit the pick guard with a hair dryer for a few minutes and peel the pick guard right off. This is just me but I prefer an acoustic guitar with no pick guard anyway. I'm not the sort of sloppy guitarist that even needs one. I have owned a Yairi since 1984 and there are no pick scratches in it. That's just the way I play.
    I really like this Guild guitar and I thank you for the great review. I like the fact that it is a jumbo. I do an acoustic duo show with a singer and I need a 12 string for some songs but I can't justify spending huge bucks for a guitar that I will not play a whole lot. This one really seems to fill the bill. Thanx again.

      Yeah! At this price point, it's the perfect meeting of affordability and playability.

I like them alot, but they are almost too warm for that guitar.. the bass pairs sound rich and warm, but don't have much definition in the octaves... almost just sounds like a huge 6 string. That said, I switched to uncoated bronzes, and they are way too bright... But I changed the EAD pairs first, and it brightened up the low end, but the Phosphors kept the GBE from being too bright. I think I am going to start doing Half Bronze and half Phosphor. As for my Guild 2512, I have no idea what to do. At this point, the coated Bronzes are growing on me. I am curious what uncoated bronzes will do-- I want the bright "As tears go by" chime. I'm hesitant about doing phosphors, but I'm curious what they would do. Look forward to hearing what yours do.
