    I thought Ultron was really underwhelming, I was hoping for him to be really menacing but he spends more time cracking jokes than cracking skulls, literally every line has a joke in it so to me I never felt there was ever much threat to the Avengers, then the introduce the most powerful character in the movie and from that point it became too predictable, credit to James Spader though, he did the best he could with the material, but his character's writing let him down. Enjoyed the movie overall, although it kind of felt like filler for Infinity War 1 & 2

      Ultron to me was amazing. He was designed to be an evil and dark version of tony stark, which they executed perfectly in that sense. Doesn't it make him seem more insane when he is plotting to murder billions and cracks up jokes about it or to plot to murder billions just plain and simple. This version of intron will murder lots of people and not care about it to the point that he jokes about it.

      I agree with everything you said. I was expecting Ultron to be much more menacing a joke or two here and there would have been fine but they made him too comical.

      Seenya b4 If that was what they intended then ok but I still didn't think it worked, it didn't help that all the trailers had him really serious as well.

      Yea. The first was not that great to me. Bust quick silver and ULTRON and vision made this movie great. I have it a 7.5 cause of a few flaws with scarlet witch and the some the odd "love" scenes.

      황원 It confuses me because I don't know what different they could have done. For me this movie raised the bar in every way, but that's just my opinion. So I'm gonna have a flame war or get heated about it, but I respectfully disagree with you. The first one was all about the thrill of seeing them together. This one has way more to it. But I also think the 2nd Matrix is the best one of those three so what do I know....

    • @MrDangerDoom
      @MrDangerDoom 9 років тому +38

      John Cummings I thought ultron was great. They portrayed him as having a child-like mind which makes sense considering he is litterally a few days old. He's not a threat in that dark, menacing way (They're saving that for Thanos) but in that his methods are like that of a child. The world is an awful place so I'll just make all these bad humans go away...problem solved. You see him throw tantrums when things don't go his way, and when he is clearly losing he becomes afraid and unsure what to do...like a child.

    Marvel really knows how to balance character development and great humour and that´s why their movies work so well. For some reason, DC Studios seems to think, that you can´t have funny and serious scenes in the same movie. They should watch Django Unchained, that movie is dark as hell and also extremely funny.
    And for the record, I´m saying that because I want DC to be awesome, like I want for all movies.

    Joe, we were never concerned about the destruction in Man of Steel, what we were concerned about was the DEATH. All throughout the battle of Metropolis, there were people dying left and right from either the dubstep drill or from Kal and Zod's fight. What was wrong with it was that not once did I ever get the impression while Kal was fighting Zod he was protecting the people and the city (other than the shoehorned neck-snap) in just about every building-shattering punch there was no conceivable way all the inhabitants of them could've survived. In Age of Ultron however, while we did get the impression that there were some civilian casualties, we constantly saw the Avengers go out of their way to protect the citizens. Hell, Cap himself said that he wouldn't leave one citizen behind on that chunk of city under his watch, when Tony was in the Hulkbuster suit he made sure that the building he rammed Hulk into was completely unoccupied. Quicksilver even sacrificed himself so that Hawkeye and that kid would survive. Yes, not every citizen survived, and I'm pretty sure we even saw a few die onscreen, but you know what, at least they fucking tried to save every citizen, not just caring about the world at large but also the people that could've died right there. In Man of Steel, while Kal did prevent the world from being destroyed, he didn't seem to care about the thousands that dropped like flies around him while he rammed Zod into several buildings. He should've at least tried to save as many as he could, maybe
    Then it would've been more impactful and understanding when he had to kill Zod. That's why the Avengers feel like genuine heroes, they actually care about the citizens around them and not just saving the vast majority at the expense of the minority.

  • @fffx2
    @fffx2 9 років тому +68

    The romance made sense. They started setting up a very close relationship between the two in the first Avengers movie...
    Also, the whole "damsel in distress" complaint is BS. It wouldn't make sense for Banner or Hawkeye to get caught. One for obvious reasons and the other because he was piloting the quinjet.
    Even still, the fact that Ultron doesn't kill her outright--and thoroughly demonstrates that he can--humanizes the villain. He says that she is all he has left.
    Even STILL she's barely captured for ten minutes.

    • @Flaris
      @Flaris 9 років тому +19

      Jacob McQuaid I completely agree. People get obsessed about this damsel in distress BS and its stupid. Look at the MCU, heroes "male heroes" get captured all the damn time. So why is it not offensive when they get captured but it is when Black Widow is?
      She even helps rescue herself and it gives them a way to find Ultron's base of operations. People need to figure out that if we want equality in the world then we need to have equality. Complaining about Black Widow being captured insults the effort she put in that lead to her capture in the first place.

      Because then he's completely on his own. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver had run out on him (literally). He's an artificial intelligence and in a lot of ways the dark mirror of Tony Stark. Who built Ultron with the mindset of being afraid of everyone dying and being alone.
      But even simplifying it down, Ultron needed someone to be there to witness his victory. He basically needed someone other than himself to talk to.

    • @fffx2
      @fffx2 9 років тому +4

      JTHmonk3y
      *Spoilers*
      He wants companionship. He says, as she wakes up, "You're all that I have left".
      He then demonstrates his power by destroying his own body. He could *easily* have torn her apart but does not, based solely on sentiment.

  • @stuartwilson9850
    @stuartwilson9850 9 років тому +49

    Meh. Didn't do much for me.
    The jokes felt pretty hit-and-miss.
    For a newly-formed AI, Ultron sounded FAR too human: laconic, world-weary etc.Can't help but feel that he should've been more...robotic.
    A lot of the time it felt as though the rest of the movie only existed to move between fight scenes.
    After four movies, Tony STILL hasn't learned to just be fucking honest, and that concealing everything all the time just causes problems?
    Banner agrees to keep their work on Ultron secret, just like that?!
    The Maximoffs want to kill Tony, despite him clearly regretting his former life? And they had no problems working with Ultron (initially)? They didn't think to establish his intentions first?
    Ultron's best plan for world extinction is...to raise a village up into the atmosphere and then drop it? Seems a bit too convenient: like they thought "what would make a cool final battle setting?" and worked backwards from there.
    I just wasn't really bothered with anyone, so i guess the fight scenes didn't do much for me. The novelty had worn off after the first Avengers, maybe?
    So yeah: it didn't do much for me :P

    • @Wildeye13
      @Wildeye13 9 років тому +4

      ***** That one of Tony's defining traits in all version of him. He keeps everything to himself because he feels he only should bear the burden. The Civil War Storyline in the comics could have ended halfway through if he just fessed up to Cap and admit he did want to work a compromise with the Anti-Registration faction. The Subsequent Secret Invasion and Dark Reign are also results of Stark's stubbornness.
      Comic Banner was much worse. You'd be amazed how many times Marvel Universe "geniuses" get into that situation.

      ***** "rest of the movie only existed to move between fight scenes" Sounds like an attention span issue.
      "After four movies, Tony STILL hasn't learned to just be fucking honest" In the first movie Tony admitted he was Iron Man, in the third movie he told a terrorist exactly where his house is... Seems like he just can't keep his mouth shut when he probably should... Also, it's kind of a staple of Marvel, and DC.
      "Banner agrees to keep their work on Ultron secret, just like that"... He agrees with Tony.
      "The Maximoffs want to kill Tony, despite him clearly regretting his former life" They didn't know that, they spent two days! That is at least 48 hours staring at death with Stark's name on it.... after their home, family, and life got destroyed by Stark weapons. That would fuck with anyone. Also, it is established that they are "young punks"... as in teenagers or very young adults. They are very impressionable and damaged.
      "Ultron's best plan for world extinction is...to raise a village up into the atmosphere and then drop it" Ultron is established that he is symbolically obsessed. Singing the Pinocchio song, marveled at the church in the center of the city, and dinosaurs went extinct from an asteroid... For a super villain like that, it is pretty much mathematical at that point. Nukes would be to cliche' and the fallout would permanently ruin the world.

    • @watur123
      @watur123 9 років тому +4

      Mattomaton Took the words right out of my mouth.
      Also, the thing about Ultron not being robotic enough just completely ignores the part where IT IS POINTED OUT that he gets a lot of his personality from Tony Stark and if he was more robotic, he would be lame as fuck.

It would have been really funny if at the end Stan Lee goes back to get something he had left at the party and notices it's underneath Thor's hammer, and he just picks it up without thinking, grabs what he was after and set's it back down with them staring at him with their mouths wide open. Only for him to not realize what he had done, saying "What? I just wanted my magazine that I left at the party".

    The movie wasnt mindless action, Ultron is the second best villain in the MCU, and I really cared for the Hulk and Black Widows relationship. I was surprised they pulled off a great squeal to all the Phase 2 movies. Ironman wants to protect the Earth from another alien invasion, Thor wants to clean the mess his brother Loki made on Earth, and Captain America wants to rid of Hydra and rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. I felt the movie was pretty damn fun for me, even if you could argue it's not great. From what I've heard, Joss Wheadon wanted a bit more control over the project, but Marvel/Disney kind of had him on the "checklist" for this movie and the Thor scenes with him in the pool were actually kept in by Marvel, even as distracting as they could be.

    • @drdoomcertifiedblogger8646

    • @dizzydoom4230
      @dizzydoom4230 9 років тому +3

      Dr Doom Certified Blogger Not in the editing process, man. I mean the overall "flow" of the film, like adding the Thor in the pool scenes. For the events going on, I'll agree to other in say they seemed very out of place when you could have easily put that kind of foreshadowing in Guardians 2 or Ragnarok.

    *WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*
    Honestly, the first avengers far surpasses the second part... I thought Ultra would be badass, but to me, he felt like a lesser version of Loki but with a different objective. Most of the time I couldn't really take him seriously since he was making jokes left and right.
    Another thing I want to note is, where the hell did the love relationship between Bruce Banner and Black Widow come from? They never had a love interest between each other in the first movie (or it was probably because I haven't seen the first part in a long time) and besides it felt too rushed between those two.
    Last but not least, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, these two did great in acting, I hated them in the beginning but I started to actually like them during the course of the movie, but just because of issues between Paramount Studios and 20th Century Fox, they just had to kill off Quicksilver?? *sigh*
    Whatever, it was a great movie regardless, I loved the jokes, especially if your worthy if Thor's hammer or not

      Superm4n Batm4n Ultron was a good villain imo (mainly becuase of the incredible voice of James Spader), but he could has been so much more. In the trailers it look like he would DESTROY the team, but in the actual film he is not like that at all. Iron Man almost beat him, alone! WTF! If Marvel is going to create a team of heroes, make the villain super powerful, not him and a generic army of robots, for fuck's sake.
      However, I really did liked the movie overall, way better than the first one.

    I'm surprised you people aren't tired as fuck of superhero movies, especially Marvel's.. They all use the same formula with the same cheap one-liners and kid friendly tone. I was severly disappointed in Ultron in this one. In the same vein as the Mandarin, the films messed up the great things about the iconic villains. Such a wasted potential and the messy plotting and characters should make Whedon consider going back to script-writing classes. Come on, people, the CGI isn't even that exciting anymore. I'll look forward to Mad Max instead.

    • @Argumemnon
      @Argumemnon 9 років тому +22

      HrTjernobyl Actually, that's the thing: they don't all use the same formula. Winter Soldier is way different from the first Cap, and Guardians was very different as well. I'll admit that the two first Iron Man movies, and Thor movies, and the two Avengers, are similar to each other within the same sub-franchise. But then, DC's formula seems to be gritty and dark and sulky. Works, too. Just two different takes on the genre. Like them both.

    To counter Joe's "destruction" point, in Man of Steel, Superman does almost nothing to save civilians. In AoU, a huge chunk of that last fight is devoted to nothing but them saving lives *everywhere they can*. In Man of Steel, there is no reason Clark couldn't just take the Zod fight out of the city to make sure there were no casualties. In AoU, *SSSSSSSPPPPPPOIIIILER* Ultron is gonna use this city as meteorite to *destroy all life on Earth*. They *had* to stay and fight in the city. Not to mention, they were fighting an *army of thousands*. And like Joe said, in Man of Steel's final fight Supes only fought *ONE MAN*. Ps. It's not the scale of destruction in a fight that matters. It's the context, and what they *do* in the fight that matters.

      Lucas Stecz I didn't pull up the killing (which I'm fine with). But the only reason he saves that *one* family is because he would be directly responsible for their death. Superman shouldn't just save people when it's convenient for him. That's not his character.

      Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure if Superman asked nicely, Zod would take the fight somewhere else. Zod had nothing to lose and he wouldn't just follow Superman to a safe place. Even if Superman dragged his ass somewhere else, Zod would just go back to Metropolis and destroy more shit! And this whole thing about Superman barely saving anyone is complete bullshit. Just to name a few, he saved a bus full of kids and risked his identity,saved a military guy, saved the colonel from Faoora, and the most important, he saved the entire fucking planet with little to no experience. And one man? Yeah, one man who has the capacity to destroy a planet with one blow.

Even if Superman dragged his ass somewhere else, Zod would just go back to Metropolis and destroy more shit!"* He was only going after Superman. He could've left the city. *"And one man? Yeah, one man who has the capacity to destroy a planet with one blow."* Considering that Superman has had his whole life to develop his powers and Zod had what? A couple of hours? Superman's not exactly at a disadvantage. *"He saved the entire fucking planet with little to no experience."* He had the help of the whole U.S Army. He barely did half of the work. Out of the what? Eight Kryptonians? He took out one and a robot. *"Just to name a few, he saved a bus full of kids and risked his identity"* I will give you that. He saved a bus full of kids. But like I said earlier. He only saves people when it is right there in front of his face, and any casualties in the situation would be directly his fault. *"saved the colonel from Faoora"* That was lucky timing, because if he was saving that jet he would've saved the other too. *"saved a military guy"* Again, right there. That would've been his fault if he didn't. See, he doesn't actively try to save lives. He only does it when the kill happens directly in front of him. He's more caught up in the fight than saving innocent people he's putting in harm's way. Like in the final fight when we see him *actually collapse a building*, and there are people in the street below it. But he does nothing to save the people under it. That would've been a good time to show him be a hero. Because, he didn't have to wait for the kill to be directly in front of his face for him to act.

    • @StonexxDemonmaggot
      @StonexxDemonmaggot 9 років тому +2

      THEULTIMATEPLAY I quote Zod "These humans that you adopted, I will take them all from you one by one!". He wasn't just after Superman, he was out to DESTROY THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE! I won't waste my time with this. Zod was throwing Superman all around the place and going through buildings like no tomorrow yet Superman is being blamed even though hes only one person. He is a hero, because he saved an entire planet. If Superman didn't give a shit, he would of kept the fight going and gone through every building and put innocents in danger. This is a realistic of view for Superman, not that Christopher Reeves stuff that he can just turn back time by flying very fast. In my opinion, this is one of the best incarnations of Superman to date because it shows his humanity and that he can't save everyone all the time.

      - tries to save his father
      -Lois from robot on ship
      -again saves Lois from internal bleeding caused by robot
      -doesn't hit bullies
      -surrenders himself to zod in order to save planet
      -saves Lois from escape pod
      -warns people in Smallville to get inside
      -many soldiers in Smallville
      -destroys world engine LITERALLY SAVING EVERYONE ON THE ENTIRE PLANET
      that enough?

    The movie industry is devolving into the same shit that's currently plaguing the video game industry. People see flashy action and CGI and automatically fall under the assumption that it's a good movie.
    The first Avengers movie was decent. Nothing spectacular, but well-paced and equipped with a solid structure. The second one was a bloated clusterfuck of senseless action scenes and shoehorned character arcs.
    But of course, the dumb masses are going to eat that shit up. We're talking about the same people who pay money to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, after all.

    I didn't mind the hatred the twins had, hatred clouds all reason and logic sooooo. I also didn't mind the romance aspect. It felt unnecessary, but it didn't feel offensive.
    I never got the hatred for Man of Steel. It wasn't perfect, but I really REALLY enjoyed the movie and thought it was well done. I agree with your earlier sentiments that it sucks Superman doesn't get his own proper sequel to help flesh his character out more (his origin set him up great, but he needs to get more development to be the proper Superman the fans love, positive and all justice and good and such).

    I know I'm years late to say this. But people lean towards 2 way too off extremes for this movie. Its not a 9/10 but it's not a 5/10. I'd say 7-8. It's really good and even if it's not terribly deep, we can't take Avengers for granted. The fact that we got that Hulkbuster fight alone was amazing.

      George Baum the thing is that kind of morality is alien to 75+ years of Superman. Unless it's the Golden Age or the Modern Age and you're a fat cat profiting from the suffering of others, Supes will go out of his way to help you, even if it gives his opponents an edge. Destroying a building is a classic way to escape Superman, as he will go save everyone, giving you a chance to escape.

    Man of Steel destruction: They keep mentioning "this part of the city is empty at this 8 PM during the week" which is ridiculous. And it's mentioned about 5 times during the movie "this place is empty of civilians". Completely unnatural and silly.

    My problem with this movie was that everyone received some form of character development, instead Banner. Where we got glimpses into the souls of the others Banner, upon losing control due to Scarlet's power, retreats inward of course and then goes into hiding. It kinda suck because I was hoping that with Banner's increased level of confidence in himself, we would soon see an appearance of the Grey Hulk where Banner has actual control over himself in the transformed state and helps the avengers both tactically and in combat as well. I dunno, it may fit with the character design but I still hated it.

    Though I'm getting the impression that it wasn't a popular idea with a lot of people, I actually thought that the Romantic involvement between Bruce Banner and Black Widow was the most interesting thing in the film. I like how they drew parrallels between the two characters of them both sharing some commonalities between themselves. Which were commonalities that I would've never saw otherwise.

    Honestly I don't get why Black Widow having a romance is a negative. Why does the only female member of the group have to be alone and without relationships? Everyone except Captain America has someone. Not to mention the complaining about the captured bit.
    Heroes get captured! Look out guys Tony Stark might have gotten captured in Iron Man 1. Thor in his first movie might have as well. Captain America got captured a few times in his movies too. We act like a female hero getting captured is tying into some kind of discrimination against women while instead having them be the only ones who avoid capture is insulting their characters. Black Widow got captured because she was doing her job and putting herself at risk, but no one cares about that.

  • @mumbleslol
    @mumbleslol 9 років тому

    I know a lot of people are already saying it but, I thought that was the whole point behind the Hulk fight scene with Iron Man? Iron Man was trying to stop the Hulk's rampage after being manipulated by Scarlet Witch. (Hence that little bunker thing he used to try and slow him down). Throughout the scene you see Iron Man save people (the ones in the elevator) and even looked for a empty building to smash him with. By the end of the scene you see even Banner is angry/disappointed about the damage he cause, whereas Superman is supposed to be this symbol of hope and heroism yet he's smashing shit left and right when he could have easily just moved the fight elsewhere. Nevertheless great video Joe.

    I didn't get mad at at Black Widow's capture, because it was for probably ten minutes. Plus, she didn't just turn into Princess Peach/Zelda and just wait for Mario/Link to come find and rescue her. She sent out the signal to bring the Avengers to her location, and deal with Ultron. That played a huge part in them stopping his plans. Then she went right back to kicking ass. Yeah, she might not have really needed a love interest, but it's not like she was singled out. Tony, Thor, Steve in the first movie, all had love interests. It might have been out of character, but it wasn't a derailment. Her with Banner made no sense, especially since I thought they were setting something up with either Steve or Barton. I do like it that her and the Captain have a professional relationship, and she's just like a sister to Barton, and still say she's not the relationship type. But her and Banner, that was completely left field. Especially when you consider Betty Ross. Banner couldn't have forgotten about her. And whatever keeps him from her, keeps him from Widow as well.

    Actually, in the first film, it was Captain America and Thor. Though Iron Man was there, he didn't really do that much. Though the massive shock-wave that happened at the end of that, basically flattening the entire forest, from Thor's hammer(Mijolnr for you who care about that) hits Captain America's shield, that was re-used here, as well, but this time less OP(then again, it isn't a full force swing) and used to beat other people up.

    Yeah, they didn't really use Black Widow very well from a super-hero perspective. Sure they gave her things to do, but I think we want her to be more a part of the team, not just be kept busy with a love story and so on. Also, given her back story in the movies she seemed to me like the LAST character that would be falling in love.

    I actually thought Banner and Romanov's scenes were a great addition. They weren't cheesy. I saw two people who feel completely incapable of having a relationship being brought together and are given a glimpse of a possible solace in each other. I mean, Banner goes through a lot of internal struggles throughout the film, as well as Romanov, so it was nice seeing the two who are forced to hide it being brought together. There's especially a great scene at (*spoilers*) Hawkeyes' home when they discuss not being able to have a life together even if they wanted to (Romanov saying she cannot have children really hit me hard). Just thought I'd give my two cents, because it's being hated on a lot and I didn't mind it.

    In 5 years, you're going to look back and ask what happened to Marvel. Age of Ultron is where the story problems begin for this "Universe" / storyline. Tony Stark or one of the original Avengers should have died, but they put in a Red Shirt like we were supposed to care when he died. This is the money grab movie. Just ask yourself, why didn't quicksilver kill hawk-eye in the first fight? Why didn't Ultron take over the Iron Man suit(s)? And why are the planets greatest heroes hanging out at a party? Oh yea, because they needed to put the hammer scene in the beginning so everyone would trust Vision later. By the time America gets to Supergirl, it will truly be a shark jump moment. 6.5 stars out of 7.

    Finally saw the film this past weekend. While I loved the first movie I honestly didn't like this one.
    In the first film there was a great amount of chemistry between the cast. This one seemed like it was really lacking. The cast just seemed to be going through the paces with no love for it. And most of the one liners just fell flat for me.
    The romance between Widow and Banner felt so forced. I know everyone says it was alluded to in the first movie but I didn't see that at all. Widow was terrified of Hulk and now all of the sudden she's in love with him? It didn't make sense. And I just can't see the character, as she's been portrayed so far, falling in love. She's an emotionless killer.
    The new team does nothing for me. With the original Avengers movie we had characters we were very familiar with coming together. It build our anticipation and was rewarding to see these heroes we had grown to love in one film. We have no connection with the new team. Minor characters from other films and completely new characters doesn't give the same feeling.

    My personal favourites from the movie (hopefully no spoilers):
    - "No surrender!"
    - "Haha, you can't lift- wait, what?"
    - 'Lullaby' by Tony Stark
    - "Sorry."
    - "I think that's yours." "Holy sh**" did he just do that?!"
    - "... nobody would ever know..."
    - "You had to ask."
    - "Oh, for God's sake!"
    One of the best ones that made the audience (me included) burst out laughing.
