HUGE THANKS to everyone who took part! As always, not everyone could make it this year (understandably so, it's a busy time), let me know who else you'd like to see next year 👍🏽
What is your favourite 2022 Smartphone? 😎
i have no money to buy one
Still using my Note 9 for android and iPhone 8+ for apple. I will probably replace the Note 9 with the S23 ultra this year since my Note 9 has a shattered screen.

Double Wristing #SuperSafStyle! 😎
Hi @SuperSaf
Can you give me a phone, seems you have quite a few lying around.
Any android phone would do man 🕶️
I broke my phone can't afford a new one that is why I am asking for it 😮💨
Thanks in advance 😄
Awesome video btw 🕶️👌
Agree with Linus - annual smartphone upgrades are REALLY a thing of the past. Don't waste your money keeping up with these companies.
Been with my iPhone 12 Pro Max and have no reason to upgrade. I'm waiting for that iPhone with USB-C!
Correct
And before the fold 3 he was using a Galaxy Note 9 for 3 straight years. He and Zack were the most reasonable in this video by far
On a OnePlus 8 pro here. Going to upgrade soon but it's still a great phone.
i have the iphone 13 pro max and got it earlier this year but i recently got introduced to the z fold 4 and i got to say i’ve been obsessed ever since so im going to switch but that’ll probably be my go to phone for years to come but i totally agree with you
Love how jerry, Linus and Marquess didn't upgrade their phones for no reason

THANK YOU CASEY for your honesty take. There truly is a sense of "what's everyone else using" and being stuck in an eco system that's not really letting people have the phone they may like better.
It's because people are blinded by the "premiumness" of Apple (even though you are paying more for less).
That's not being "stuck", that's being a follower and weak because you care too much about what people think.
@@johnnygeorgopoulos4072it’s not just abt being a follower, if ur a college student in the US you’re social life is heavily hindered if u have an android. I still refuse to switch but it’s annoying
@@ivanmijacika7230 that's hilarious, hilarious in a pathetic way 🤣 Android can do everything iOS can do plus much, much more, yet somehow, you claim you're "social life is hindered if you're a Android user" 🤣
@johnnygeorgopoulos4072 yes, and that's a fact. It's purely cuz if imessage and FaceTime but that's the reality
Linus is correct. Annual phone updates have been very abysmal for a while. I just upgraded from my Galaxy S10+ to the S22 Ultra and I do not see myself upgrading for another maybe 2-3 years. Love this phone. Also Casey's dilemma is sad af. I haven't texted anyone through an sms app on a while. It's all either FB Messenger, or Whatsapp. Honestly Europe is so much better since everyone uses Whatsapp and Japan too with Line.
Not just Europe, almost everyone in India, South East Asia and South America use it as well.
Are you saying there was a point at which you got a new phone every year
@@RahulBaskaran Yup. It's why nobody really cares if you use iPhone or Android communication-wise outside of North America.
should've waited for the s23 ultra lol
american still use message? not very flexible
Zack, Linus, and Marques - their jobs and livelihoods depend on reviewing new devices and on the reliance on people buying new things year on year to keep interest in personal tech up. Props to them for staying true to themselves and stating that they themselves haven't felt the need to upgrade to this year's latest tech.
Yeah, I myself upgrade my device 6 to be 8 months after the software support goes away.. and I just got a realme 9 pro; it's a budget device but it'll last me till 2026 pretty much so I'm happy with it. Specially because I got it for the price of the non pro model
As a PC freak because of following Linus i still using GTX1070 for more than 5 years hahahaha
@@szewei85 Still use my gtx 760 and gtx 980(main rig) to this day.
I currently have the same thinking as Zack, Linus, and Marques. My main phone might be an oldie but still a goodie. And my opinion between Android and iOS is similar to Casey Neistat's. I'm more of an Android user but we are sorta forced to use iOS here in the States since our social circle uses mostly iMessage.
My current daily drivers are still Androids but devices from 2020 and 2021...
Razr 5G (2020) w/ T-Mobile sim
Flip 3 (2021) w/ AT&T sim
My Razr 5G is my main phone but I'll be getting out of T-Mobile by April once the iPhone 12 mini and Razr 5G are paid off. I'm qualified for ACP and T-Mobile has it for Metro. But Metro doesn't offer tethering with $50 unlimited plans.
So I decided to go back to AT&T after nearly 6 years. They offer a prepaid unlimited for only $20 per month under ACP. If you have EBT or Medicaid, you can qualify for ACP and get a $30 discount with carriers that cover ACP.
My AT&T sim is on my Flip 3 but it's only the 5 GB plan. My balance for it per month is $0. I'll eventually have two prepaid lines. One that's unlimited for $20 per month and the other with 5 GB which will be free.
The Flip 3 works well as a phone but I prefer using my Razr 5G more since it has more storage (256 GB) to download torrents and the bigger cover display. As an overall device , I do prefer my Flip 3 more but not as a main phone.
Here are other phones I use daily:
Apple iPhone SE (2022)
Apple iPhone 7 (2016)
Apple iPhone SE (2016)
Google Pixel 3 (2018)
Essential Phone (2017)
I'll have between 4 to 7 phones I'll be using daily. It can get annoying charging them all. I got an octopus cable that has all the different standards. I want to think like Zack. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm actually thinking I may not want to upgrade to another phone for *10* years. But software updates only last 5, so I might stick to 5-year intervals. That's only twice per decade.
Maybe do what Jenna does. Use iPhone and a Flip. Maybe get an iPhone in 5-year intervals (15, 20, 25, etc). Then get Flip the same way (5, 10, 15, etc). So 2023 is looking like an upgrade year since iPhone 15 (with USB-C) and Flip 5 (with 3+ inch cover display) are coming next Aug/Sept.
As much as I prefer Android, I do need iPhone to stay in touch easier with family and friends. I know it sucks but Apple already dominates USA, so we really have no choice but to own an iPhone as Casey said. Apple is a terrible company to support who are very anti-consumer but it's hard to let go.
My sim was formerly on my iPhone SE 3 for about 6 weeks since Oct 30. I did enjoy it but I went back to my Android flips since I just prefer SwiftKey , copy and paste is easier, and creating hotspots is way better on Android.
I still have issues with iOS with basic things and the video player app is limited and won't play different codecs like mkv and avi. I prefer my emulators and torrents from Android. I like my sideloading apps which I guess will be available to iOS17. I do DoorDash and the Dasher app for drivers is still way better on Android.
It's no big deal since while I use Androids, my iPhones are still within reach when I want to text my mom and for her to see that blue bubble. It's actually good to own both platforms so you're never left in the dark.

I respect people like Zac (Jerryrigeverything) and Linus who don't change their phones every year just to get the often insignifiant extra features phone company add to their phones to entice people to 'upgrade' annually. If you have a working phone, especially if it's a flagship, that's still supported by its manufacturer, there's no need whatsoever to upgrade. That's why the current phones I carry are an iPhone 12 mini (daily driver) and a Samsung Note 10 (work/backup phone), and I'm perfectly happy with both!
how’s the 12 mini coming for you? since i’ve heard the 13 mini is noticeably better with the battery life?
@@lifeisshrt7929 I'm not a heavy user so it fits my needs. Its battery life is similar to what I'm getting with the Note 10, which is not a battery life champ either, but, again, fits my need. The issue of battery life is overblown imo since most people have access to chargers, wired or wireless, at home, work and car, plus portable battery packs (I have the Apple one) take care of range anxiety when you happen to be away from a charger for longer than usual.

Tbh man you should wait for like the Galaxy S30 or something before upgrading because even by todays standards the Note 9 holds up to and if not beats a lot of midrange phones today while the Note 20 will last you probably half or quarter a decade
@@enashimo how long do u thing s20 will last?

Huge respect for Zach, Linus and Marques! There is nobody stopping them to use the latest and greatest, even people like Zach breaks the latest for fun but still they chose to stick to previous year or even older phones as there primary!
We need less of e-Waste! and its very important to understand that one phone can last atleast 4-5 years and you won't notice any issues in day-to-day life using those phones!
Currently using the blue Z flip 4 256GB and absolutely love it. It's fast, battery life is great ( for a device like this ) and the coolness factor is just nice.
i had one phone i was quite obsessed this year with and another one that i find it was the second in my obsetion list, and giving that the nice preorder offer, it also made it into my pocket unlike my no. 1 obsession. So no. 1 was vivo x80pro... i think it had the camera character that i would have loved the most to hold into my pocket. but in the end i chose to go pixel 7 pro and at the preorder offer including that 415euros pixel watch i think this one was indeed the better value/buck phone of the year for me. I also love the cameras obviously so after using it for a couple of months, I can only say i no longer regret the x80pro even though i still have it in my mind again because of the camera character that was indeed really amazing.
I really like the message to use phones that aren't super current. It's better for sustainability and it'll save some money. It also makes the creators feel more genuine and less like they're just pushing new product. No disrespect to anyone that picks new ones though, they're sometimes fun and exciting but generally incremental updates.
Only reason I upgraded to the Pixel 7 is because the trade in offer Google was doing for Black Friday made it a $20 upgrade. Otherwise, I normally wait til my phone dies or stops receiving security updates, whichever is first.
$20 is a pretty good deal tbh
A 20 dollar upgrade? That's it? Which phone were you using that gave you such a good trade in deal(excluding BFs discount)?

Chris, do you experience the green bubble shaming thing for being on Android? I know you are a big Linux guy so maybe most of your circle has Android anyway, but just curious since you are in the US if you experience any peer pressure.

Using the Z Fold 3 still as well. The Z Fold 4 just wasn't enough of an upgrade and I am firmly hooked on the Fold form factor. We will see what the future holds for Z Fold 5 and if that will tempt me to upgrade.
Did the z fold 5 tempt you enough to upgrade?
@BlackComet95 nope, still using the 3. Still snappy, screen is in great condition, and still meets my needs. Let's see what. Z Fold 6 has to offer next year. Oh I did pick up a Tab S9+ though.
from the view fluctuation chart, it is very noticable why people here seek Linus, MKBHD, and JerryRig the most.
not just because they are big names, but they also give insights that phone upgrading now is a trivial matter. Where other creators used the highest, newest, baddest boy in town that may come across as lavish, they stick to the 1 - 2 phones that they deemed worthy and will be using them for as long as those phones can.
As a fellow viewer who still used phones from 3 years and 6 years ago, these 3 (Especially JerryRig) definitely earns my respect.
I feel like there should be a push for these techtubers to acknowledge that the yearly upgrade cycle shouldn't really be a thing anymore, but maybe that's just me

Huge props to MKBHD , Linus and Jerry rig everything, honestly you guys are influencers and by definition you influence people to spend and pointless spending that puts people in some financial debt isn't that way to go , I choose to use a note 10 plus because I love the phone and I never saw a need to upgrade, ALWAYS going to be a huge fan of you guys including you supersaf love you guys
I used to upgrade yearly, every year, I'd have a "new" Note and "new" Google Nexus, then I moved across the country to the Midwest and was forced off my beloved T-Mobile onto the wretched Verizon and their ridiculousness (even though I bought my phones cash, second hand, months after they were released to save a buck), but I bought an unlocked Galaxy S9+ and kept using it straight for 5yrs.... during that time I finally left Verizon after other cell service around my area caught up, went to Straight Talk so I could keep that trash S9 and pay a flat rate.... finally upgraded to a Pixel 7.
Point being lol, if one doesn't care, and takes care of their tech, it'll last just fine....my S9 was still absolutely mint with a perfect battery and flawless glass, it'll be a backup seeing how Google has changed how the Android updates/filesystems work and I no longer know what I'm doing with swapping different operating systems onto the phone since it's all completely changed now.... and I'm a hands on learner😅

Fully support Casey on what he said about Android, and how Android would be the ultimate preference, if not being kinda pushed into using the iPhone. The pattern is easily seen, when the answers came from outside of America, Android, in this case Samsung G Ultra and Fold 4 were the preferred smartphones. Cause as a system, when the marketing and hype/status pressure is not considered, the Android wins hands down.
I live in UK and I think everyone around me are using WhatsUp for communication, even if I own Iphone I very rarely use IMessages, even forgot about this…
@@eveliinalt But the question is why? What do you think your/an iPhone can do, that an Android can’t? Or have you also been pushed into believing the marketing agenda, that it’s the best and one must have it and nothing else?😁 I’m mean, I used to be an Apple fan all the way, still fully integrated into the ecosystem, but have lately been using an Android, as a second phone, and I can say that as Apple users, we are missing out in some areas.

I agree! I see myself getting a foldable flip next time a need to upgrade, as long as it has come down a lot in price. But I don't plan on upgrade the coming years, so my hopes up!
to me foldables seem like just a gimmic, at least for now, im sure they may develope some actual necessity for it in the future, but at least for now its not worth purchasing in my eyes
@@anon8544 precisely.
It brings me back to the days of feature phones. Where people could identify a phone from miles away and was unique.
Lately, unless you have an iPhone, all phones look alike and nobody will bat an eye. They’re all boring.
Foldables brought that “spark” back in a sense for me
@anon8544 agree, it's very eye catchy...technology is beautiful.
@@anon8544 that’s how I’ve always felt about them, it’s a little annoying how some people talk about folding phones being the future when really there’s no reason for them to be as the gimmick doesn’t add anything useful to the phone. Though that’s just my opinion of course.
I went back from Android to iPhone when I got the 12 Mini. Love barely feeling a phone in my pocket yet having all the same features. Especially convenient when going to a club and taking videos there. You can dance without a giant brick in your pocket.

I really like Colonel Singala, he's always smiling and seems like always in a good mood.
Would be even better if I can understand what he's saying.
The main conclusion is really that there is no need to upgrade every year, or even every second year, especially if you're not a Tech UA-camr or it's kind of your job to have it. I have a XS Max and the only thing I'm missing is an Ultra Wide and a Night Mode. I was thinking of upgrading this year, but the iPhones got more expensive in Europe so it just made me decide to wait for another year since my phone is working great. "If it isn't broke, don't fix it."
2nd hand iPhone 13 pro max are great value
My Android that I use in 2023 is still the OnePlus 7 Pro. Even though we’ve tested out multiple models from 2022 on our channel from the Pixel 7 Pro, S22 Ultra, Z-Flip 3 and so on and the fact that the OnePlus 7 Pro is clearly outdated and no longer has OS upgrades it still works for me. Android allows me to have customization options down to launchers and shortcuts, so having the latest Android isn’t 100% necessarily the most important thing for me - although it is looking like an Upgrade is due.
As far as my iOS device it’s an iPhone 13 Pro. Compact enough to be powerful but not too small to feel a noticeable drop in battery life (iPhone Minis 🧐). I just didn’t feel like upgrading to the 14 Pro… the dynamic island and larger camera sensor wasn’t enough to elicit a “goodbye” to the 13 Pro.
But something tells me that USB-C will be a HUGE factor into consumers upgrading decisions come iPhone 15.
1:45 of course, you're always wearing sunglasses
Shout out to the iPhone 13 mini recommendation! When I switched back to iOS this year, I went from 14 Pro to 13 Pro Max all the way to mini. It’s so nice to have a small phone that you can literally use with one hand and see the entire screen and all the content without much eye movement.
It’s the ultimate convenience phone imo. So much power to handle just about everything with amazing cameras all packed inside a tiny form factor.

I love tech, but I'm uncomfortable with ewaste. Upgrading every year just feels like I'm polluting and getting little personal benefit from it.
I'm with Casey on this. If all my friends and family suddenly switched to Android, I would be on an S22 ultra so fast. 😂 I still use Android from time to time when I just get so bored with my iPhone I can't stand it anymore (it's getting to be about that time now). But I definitely get some weird looks and unnecessary comments from people for it. 🤦🏼♀ But I don't care about that so much. I only end up going back for the Apple ecosystem. I do love my iPad and Macbook. Those two I would never want to change. Just miss having iMessage when using a Samsung.
If Apple would just change the look of ios for once since 2013 and quit marginally changing through insignificant updates that make it uglier and less intuitive to use and add a bunch of "features" I'll never use maybe ios would be less boring. But instead apple users are the ones actually being used.
I agree with everything but MacBook, I hate their computer ios
I just love the Galaxy A53. It's got almost everything a flagship needs (maybe without the greatest chip), at a mid-range price.
I'm using a note20 ultra. I plan to use it for a few more moons. As it's still quick without any glitches and the camera quality is still quite good. Plus it's the last proper "note," and Samsung flagship which supports micro sd.
I was using LG v30 since Jan 2018, finally switched to LG v60 this month (December 2022) as it was the only device that had all of the stuff that I use on a daily basis like a headphone jack and wireless charging. The performance is great and it offers two days battery life no cap.
Im also using note 10+ to this day😀 I actually bought s22 but missed features from note, sold it and went back to note10+ . Honestly its excalty same experience despite being few years old to new galaxy phones

Same here. I don't see any compiling reason to upgrade to the latest device unless it becomes obsolete. I still find time to time that my s10 is capable of doing everything the latest device can do. If it weren't for the lack of OS / security patch support. I'll probably continue to rock my S10 still.
Glad to see atleast one person using iPhone mini. If you haven’t tried, it’s honestly refreshing
Can’t blame the people for using the newest tech, it’s their job, but mad props to the ones that stick with the still great ‘older’ tech. Consumerism is fine and we need new innovation and upgrades, besides not everyone upgrades at the same time, but it’s so refreshing to hear that some stuck with what they had. Not only the ‘I used the new phone x because it’s the newest one.’
Every year you do Collab with other tech experts to ask about their daily pocket devices. Such a great video.👍♥️
