  • I find I get asked these questions A LOT - "How do you mix your pouring medium?", "How do you mix your paints?", "How do you consistently do a galaxy pour??" So I thought I would do a series of tutorials to help answer some of these questions. Please keep in mind that these are just my own personal methods of doing things - it's not written in stone and if it doesn't work for you then thats totally ok - there are hundreds of different pouring tutorial videos out there and hundreds of different artists who do it differently than I do.
    The first tutorials I did were "How to mix your glue pouring medium" and "How to mix your paints", which you can find already posted to my channel. This weeks tutorial is "How to do a Galaxy Pour". Again, this is just my own personal method of creating a galaxy pour. There are many other methods out there that may suit you but you can always use this as a general base. For my galaxy pours you'll notice that I always start with black. This is probably the most important aspect of the entire process. Because if you don't start with black then it's not likely you'll be able to call it a galaxy pour. I also use a smidge of white at least somewhere in my mix because I find when it pops up it helps create a starry night feeling.
    If you have suggestions of other tutorials you'd like me to do please leave me a comment. And don't forget to subscribe so you can be notified when my tutorials pop up!
    Just a heads up that my crew and I will be taking a little break over the Holidays. We'll be back at it with more video's for you on January 4th!
    I'll be adding new videos every Monday and Thursday so don't forget to give me a Like, SUBSCRIBE, and leave a comment to let me know what you think! Feel free to ask any questions as well!

    One of my favorite things about this method of painting is that the options are endless! There is no right or wrong, and if you can dream it up, you can try it! Thanks for making this tutorial series! I have watched all 3 videos and am excited to try this method of painting!!! (I'm starting today!) I like that I can take bits of technique from different people and incorporate them into what I'm experimenting with. For me, the most helpful part of this series (aside from instructions), is that you always explain your reasons why you do or don't do it a certain way. Thanks again for sharing!

    Thank you so much for posting this tutorial series!! I recently fell in love with poured art and desperately wanted to try it myself. I watched a mountain of other videos and went out and got a few supplies and tried some simple pours. Fail...fail...fail !!!!! I wasn’t sure if maybe I just didn’t have a knack for it. Your videos were filled with great tips and very descriptive. I love that you took your time with each section. So many other videos rush through these things and leave viewers with much less understanding. I was so inspired after watching all three videos that I got out my Glue all and a few colors of paint and actually had my first successful pour !!!!! Yay Me !!You rock !! Thank you so much!

      That’s so nice - thank you! I’m so glad you found my videos helpful - that was exactly my hope when I started these because I found that to be the part I was missing while I was learning. I figured it out but it was so frustrating. There’s no need for this to be that difficult for people who love this style of painting and would like to be creative but need the help to do so. Thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️

    Thank you for your family's service to this country. I love your pour. I think the Pouring medium method is another great way to create beauty in the artist community. I have notice when teaching others about painting one of the first thing that intimidates them is mixing color this is an easy way to help take away that intimidation. Its also another way to get people to get into painting without the structured lines of a painting because anything goes. I love the painting thanks for teaching and sharing.

      Thank you, Debbie! We’re actually in Canada - a lot of people assume when I say we’re a military family that we’re in the U.S. so wanted to clarify. My husband did serve alongside U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan as did many of our friends.
      I appreciate you mentioning the intimidation aspect of all of this as a beginner artist. We all start somewhere and the purpose of me doing these tutorials was so ANYONE could start. Art is for everyone!

    Every method is a unique experience in individual creativity! This is why every technique is different and the results are awesomely satisfying and beautifully executed! You are an inspiration to many people who love your style and composition to this art abstraction. Perfection is realized when you step back and admire the beauty of the end result.
    Galaxy painting is an excellent example of this skill and skill is what you expect in the endgame! Thank you for sharing your talent and dedication and creativity with us! You have done yourself proud and deserve to be celebrated and respected and acknowledged as a talented artist who has made our eyes admire your attention to detail!🎉🎉🎉

    I shall be deleting all others I've subscribed too. You've made sence of everything to me. I just need to understand colour coordination so as not to create a pile of mud.. Soooo pleased to have gotten back into creating art (my way) which is why I'm sooo happy to have discovered "fluid art".

    Thank you for this video. I am definitely a newbie to fluid art. Actually to any painting at all. COVID isolation got me into youtube videos and I found this. So I have been trying this for a couple of weeks now. I have yet to have a successful pour. I thought it was just me. After reading the comments I realized it isn't just me. You make it seem so easy but it is not easy at all! However your comments to the others made me keep going. So...here's to happy pouring 😊

    I am going to join your Facebook group as soon as I finish the series. Your videos are extremely informative and I have learned so much from everything that you’ve been talking about. Extremely disappointed that the second video lost sound about the last third of the video. I could tell by your hand movements that must be explaining something really interesting. I’m 73 years old and I love every type of art and do just about everything from quilting to Chinese watercolors. This is a new passion of mine and I’m really really excited to watch more of your videos to find out more about your process. I’ve watched numerous videos on UA-cam and try to pick up tips and tricks from everyone. You are by far one of the most interesting artists I’ve heard. You explain exactly why you do certain processes. You are the only person I’ve heard that has mentioned not over mixing the silicone and why. Also your explanation on layering the paint by weight made so much sense to me. I can’t wait to watch more of your videos to gather more tidbits of information.

    Hi,
    A very clear explanation and visual tutorial. Thanks! I'm a traditional artist of over (cough! cough!) 40 years experience. I started at age 5, with what I have always said, was my best Christmas presents EVER! A metal paint box with 12 colours, brushes, paper, and a huge box of Crayola coloured pencils! I started to Art that Christmas, and I've never stopped..
    With art you never stop learning, there is always something new to see and experience.
    I've sold pieces throughout my life. It never stops surprising me that a person is willing to buy my Art. I always feel humbled by the transaction. My paintings and illustrations are all over the world. It still, after all this years, tickles me pink to sell, or give a piece into anothers hands.
    Though I'm a wild life artist, I paint and sculpt anything, and especially love fantasy.
    I have done the occasional pour. I find them both fascinating and frustrating at the same time lol!!. 🤔I'm generally used to controlling what the general outcome will be (there have been exceptions over the years Lol! 😭😕🤣) when I put my medium of choice to paper or canvas. Pours are the opposite. You never know what you will get! I think that is the magic. Each pour is a journey, not knowing where you will end up till the end of the line!. Lol. 😄
    Both my daughters both art, my eldest is training as a Midwife, and still paints in her time off. My youngest is a Tattooist, though loves to draw and paint. I did achieve my Art degree along with others, though I'm a retired Duel Trained Nurse, (early retirement due to injury at work) I often used my horse and art rucksack to destress. Both girls do the same..(they have my horses Saxon and Captain, as I can't ride anymore) Art is as old as Mankind, it out dates any spoken language, and like music, can communicate where words can't.
    I've nattered on long enough. I really enjoyed your pour, and subbed to see more.. Thanks😁

      Thank you for stopping in to post this! I think most artists I know started when they were small and just never stopped. There was an exact point for me when I started to sell my work and take it more seriously and I remember it well because I was otherwise in a pretty dark place.
      I love the unknown of the pours but I can see, as an illustrative artist, how they could be frustrating. But what I like about the pours is having to relinquish some of the control. I enjoy the surprise :)

    Well what I was always told and fully believe is art is anything you create. Doesn't matter if it's a drawing, painting, writing a song, or writing a book either way someone created it for someone else to enjoy which makes it art .

    • @MaiganLynn
      @MaiganLynn  6 років тому +2

      Exactly. And it’s all relative. Some people are so pompous as to assume their opinion as fact, that they have a better grasp on what art actually is because of education or experience etc. That just isn’t so

      Maigan Lynn exactly, I have my Associates in graphic design and been doing art pretty much since I was born thanks to my mom but no matter how many times I didn't like what I did so I didn't think it was art she would always remind me that I created it so it was art even if I wasn't happy with it at first.

    awesome artwork! it is art. and the reason why is because each person can choose any colors they want, and pour them into the cup in any order they want and when they move the paint on the canvas, you can do any shape that you want. one person may tilt the paint this way and another person will tilt the paint that way. there's no right or wrong way to tilt the paint. do it however you want.
    also, i like her style of teaching because she doesn't tell people you have to do it this way or that way. she doesn't impose her creative style on anyone and tell people they have to do it her way. i also like that she doesn't talk about things that are totally unrelated to the art.

    Thank you so much for these tutorials they are extremely beneficial for paint pouring. I have used the white school glue and yes the paint does crack which is very disappointing and very wasteful because it ruins my paintings. Now I know what to use thanks to you and I’ll be giving that a try. And by the way you’re painting is amazing I just love it have a lovely day.

    I've been pouring only for maybe a month and my pours look like land mass pictures from space.
    I'm pretty proud of how they're turning out but I like the big cells and I've been stretching my cells out to nothing. Next one will be like yours not tilting it too much and keeping my cells intact.
    Your videos are awesome and I would love to see more.

    I feel the same way...it’s been a slow moving process for me too. I’ve always sketch and drawn and messed with art since I was in high school but I never really painted til 2012 then I got married in 2013 and having two step daughters and a husband, there was no time to paint in the beginning. But started painting a couple years ago and half of them I never finished and then I found pour painting last year and it has inspired me so much. I love to play in the paint. I love that you have completed something. Because I have a hard time finishing my more detailed paintings 🤪 I’m always thinking about the next steps or I’m afraid I’m going to mess it up. But Pour painting....you can’t really mess up...it’s so much fun. I love the surprise after you lift the cup up... you never know what you’re going to get. And once it’s dry it’s done. And I don’t have to think so much about it. It’s wonderful!

    • @MaiganLynn
      @MaiganLynn  6 років тому +1

      Yes! You feel me! lol! Over the years I've learned when to be done with my illustration work but it was tough. With the pours it's much easier because I stop shifting when it 'feels' right.
      Hopefully within this next year I'll have a little more time for work as the dynamic, once again, will be shifting lol....oh the military life! lol!

    THANK YOUUUUUUUU, Maigan! Thank you for doing these tutorial videos and taking time to share your knowledge, wisdom, techniques, & tips for others who might like to venture into this enticing arena of paint pouring, like myself, and for those who are enamored with it and simply wonder "How'd she do that?!" I appreciate this so much! Thank you for being so personable and also letting us know who YOU are and your background. It makes this, and your work & videos, even more approachable & likeable. 😊
    I first accidentally stumbled upon this magical world of flow acrylics a year ago--I was decorating my roommate's xmas tree (his insistance, so I didnt have to look at his usual huge, gawdy 70s style red-green-white theme *gags* for a month) & I couldn't find ornaments in the right shade of blue to match older stuff he had (I did a dark blue-silver-gold-white color scheme...it was stunning when I finally finished! Lol), so I decided I'd get clear globes at Michaels & decorate them with glitter or whatever else I found. The cashier recommended using Mod Podge for glitter application, so I went online to find tutorials on how to use it/what to do before I started making a mess/disaster. After watching a few Mod Podging vids & ornament decorating vids, well, first of all, I wanted to Mod Podge ALL the things everywhere (thank gahd I didn't go bananas with that, though!), and then I started getting acrylic fluid painting videos pop up in my YT feed, & once I clicked to watch 1 out of curiosity, my WHOLE feed was nothing but pouring videos! Evil YT! Bah haha! 😂 I've watched hundreds of them since then!
    I finally started gathering supplies in the last few weeks, was going to start with craft paints from wack-mart & the acrylics I found at Dollar Tree, but when I tested a few to see how they performed/dried & what they looked like (with simple brush application on plastic & tile), I was very disappointed. They were mostly mattes, so I watched tutorials on pouring mediums & mixed up a little glue, water, & glycerine for my inexpensive "Floetrol." Still disappointed😔--the mattes are still very matte, & 2 of them fell apart, the color changed dramatically & they looked almost transparent (apparently poorly pigmented as I did a 1-1 ratio of PM to paint as a starting point!), and the Rich Art black ($ Tree) I tested is really gritty/grainy. 😕
    However...I had to go to Hobby Lobby for the glycerine Mon & saw their store brand of paints & supplies are 50% off this week. After seeing several reviews raving about them, I picked up a couple last night to trial. Oh.Em.Gee. 😯 What What a HUGE difference! And they finish very glossy, as well as standing up to the homemade PM! I know these would be considered student grade, not artist quality, but I don't care, I'm LOVING these! (You said you use any acrylics you can find that you like, & a lot of other pouring artists do as well, so I'll let the snobs be snobs while we have lots of fun playing & creating really rad sh*t! 😆) I'm headed back this afternoon to stock up a bit. So excited to FINALLY start! And I love the galaxy pour method! Thanks for the in-depth tutorial. Looking forward to trying it, & just playing with paints in general. 😉

      Oh this makes me so happy! I’m glad you found them so useful! I went through tons of videos when I first started as well and always felt a thorough explanation and understanding was missing. I love it, but I’m finding that my hands aren’t as steady as they need to be anymore. Pour painting appeals to my “yesterday isn’t soon enough attitude”. Having fun. Thanks.

    • @MaiganLynn
      @MaiganLynn  6 років тому

      A lot of the tutorials, the artist won’t say that their way is the only way but I’ve run into that attitude in a few groups. It always shocks me. I think with the upswing in popularity of the poured paintings it makes it harder to carve out your own niche and some have a bit more difficult time handling that.
      I’m so glad you’re going to try this out - it’s so much fun and highly addictive lol!
