My hometown still exists, but my childhood home burned down and was replaced with an awful new house. I miss my childhood. Thanks Joe for reminding me that thinking life began at 17 and was wrong.
Last summer, I had lunch with a boyhood friend I hadn't seen in over 50 years - No the hometown isn't there but it helped to recall being so stupid and so, so, so.
FINALLY! I've been looking all over for the more upbeat version of this wonderful song. It has to have this pace to lead me into the proper mood. I like the slower version ok, but this is the one I NEED, if that makes any sense. Joe Jackson is a very underrated musical genius.
My hometown is the next town over. But it is gone. That is why I moved away. I would like to go back there in 1983. When my biggest worry was what kind of strings I was going to buy.
Not quite a studio version. 'Big World' was a LIVE recording for a LIVE audience and Joe asked the audience NOT to applaud or shout during performance :) You can read that on the vinyl LP.
Every so often I find a letter I wrote to myself when 25. I suppose it lies at the bottom of a drawer. It's so amazing how naive I could be at the same time I was wise.
I have seen all three performers multiple times and Parker is right there as far as songwriting and as a live performe. Parker is where I'm from....Jackson is tough to beat as a frontman though
Well, there`s Michael`s father, but, we really don`t want to go there. Oh, and THIS Joe can be hard to pigeonhole; his sound and approach to the music oftimes changed DRASTICLY from album to album.

I had forgotten this song completely and the words just came right back right after the 1st verse. Thanks for posting this.
Love this song since the album came out in 198?. Thank you!
Joe Jackson is one of my favorite songwriter and performer!
This is actually a live performance. Jackson told the audience not to applaud nor cheer during the recording of Big World. :)
And on top of that it's a direct two-track recording, leaving almost no possibilty for edits.
thanks for this-i liked it even before i became nostalgic.feels so good....
Great Tune Great Band.
Se me pone la piel de gallina. Uno de mis favoritos Jacksons.
Portsmouth was his hometown- I believe. Dirty old place- great though....
inspired tune, and really profound and accurate lyrics. I agree that it's a masterpiece.
You get it. I get it. We get it!
CUANDO Regrese a mi "ciudad natal" ... Dejando las Grandes y atestadas Ciudades "" "" ", Buenos recuerdos ..!
England definitely had plenty of great musicians.
