And they will never, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER in a million years react to Lou Ann Barton. In fact, out of their half million subscribers, I bet myself and three other people who view this channel are the only ones who know who she even is.
You have to go back three decades before Big Mama to find the foundations of rock. The Victrola record player hit the market in 1906 and Sister Rosetta Tharpe started recording about 13 years later in 1919. Big Mama Thornton didn't start recording until 1947 when the 33 rpm LP first became popular.
In the big wide river of Rock n Roll with all of its many roots Big Momma Thornton is a major tributary, feeding so many others who used her soul and technique to make the ‘60’s and ‘70’s such a joy to live through. This is the base that a mighty sound was built on. ✌️
Janis was filmed with Big Brother and the Holding Company performing a cover of Big Mama's Ball and Chain live in concert at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. That version was included in the 1993 box set release titled Janis. The version that was included on Cheap Thrills in 1968 was also recorded live in concert at the Fillmore East in NYC. Unfortunately, Thornton's first record label owned the copyright to the song, so she never received any royalties from Janis Joplin's cover.
nope. Big Mama Thornton didn't start recording until the record industry invented the 33 rpm LP record. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was rocking and rolling on the old Victrola 78 rpm records long before Big Mama came along.
BIG MOMMA!! Finally! A true pioneer of Rock n Roll music. Only now more recently is she getting her propers as the inspiration for artists such as Elvis Presley.
She wasn't a pioneer of rock and roll. She didn't start making music until 1947. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is considered the mother of Rock and Roll. She started making music almost 30 years before Thornton started her career.
Hound Dog is the only song both artists recorded. It was written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. Elvis got more fame than his mediocre talent deserved. He never wrote a song. All his songwriting credits are fraudulent thanks to his crooked manager, Tom Parker.
Thank you! I knew somebody down here in these comments would know who's playing guitar. Sounds so much like B.B. King's style to me. But I can't claim to really know that much about it. The guitar on this really struck me, though.
OMG, this brought tears to my eyes. The last time I heard this was with my Grandmother. I am over 60 now. What a blessing to live in a world with such music. I am making a Mama Thornton play list for my Saturday. i appreciate you two. You are full of surprises.
You know what makes this song? She knows when to control her voice and when to knock you on your butt!! Also, the piano is great but, the guitar is perfect!!! Yes!!
Yeah Baby! I looooove classic blues! Big Mama wails like no other. The soul just pours out of her. Grat pick guys, you are the most eclectic in your picks of any reactors, bravo! Keep up the good work! Love you guys ❣️
LOVE THIS!! Absolute perfection!! Broke out the Jack Daniels for this one! Janis Joplin was a huge fan of Big Mama Thornton. FANTASTIC Female Friday tonight!!! Thank you, Miss Amber!!
I saw this last night and it was so cool, I grew up on blues because my dad had a band and his idol was Mr BB King who also recorded Sweet little angle 😎😎😎
“she performed everything from rhythm and blues and West Coast blues to Juke Joint blues and Texas blues. Not only a singer, she also played harmonica and drums.”
So many incredible well known artists listened to and love Big Mama Thornton. It doesn't take a genius to know why. Might I also suggest another Big Mama, Big Maybelle. Her song, "Candy" would be a good place to start. I first heard the song when I was a kid. It was on The Cosby Show. Love that song too. 😎👍
This is one of the best songs by one of the great blues singers of all time! BB King did a great version of this song also. You guys should check out Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton, two of the greatest blues guitarists of all time!
Big Mama wrote & performed Ball & Chain. Another singer you might like is Odetta, she leaned more folky & was another inspiration for Janis. My favorite by Odetta is Bald Headed Woman.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Libba Cotten, but she was an early singer who pioneered a very unique way of playing her guitar upside down. She was left-handed, but was given a right handed guitar so she had to improvise to make it work. She was born and raised in my area near Chapel Hill, NC and there's a Libba Cotten memorial that I pass by all the time. Her song "Freight Train" was written about the trains that went by her house when she was growing up. There are only a few recordings of it dating back to the 50s, but if you can find one, she is different for sure. As she aged, her voice grew shaky and frail, but she never gave up that innovative guitar style.
She never got royalties from Joplin's cover of Ball and Chain. The original label Thornton recorded it with decided not to release it but retained ownership of the copyright and licensed it to another label in 1968.
For old blues (and especially if you like sax), try "Back Door Blues (Live) Eddie Vinson - Topic." Too many people have forgotten Cleanhead Vinson. He was one of the best.
Love Big Mama Thornton. Now you need to listen to Lightnin’ Hopkins. Either Hello Central or Trouble in Mind Both great songs. Lightnin’ Hopkins is probably my favorite blues singer.
Loving your channel. I am discovering some music I've never heard of, and hearing some tunes I haven't heard in ages. I love Big Mama Thornton. What a legend and a talent very similar to Sister Rosetta, another legend! I recommend a blues singer from the UK, James Hunter "People Gonna Talk" is a great song. I know you guys love the 70s, and I do have another recommendation for you. It's a band called Sherbet. (They are Australian) The song is "Howzat"...I really think you will love it. Keep up the great work. I'm really enjoying your reaction ❤
You can feel the energy and emotions in this one here they don't make like this anymore which sad the is raw music at its highest great pick Amber and jay
So much soul and passion in her voice. She can send a message through her voice to reach anyone. Nice one. I suggest Graham Parker--Life Gets Better (1983).
So many wonderful female singers from back then. Have to include the great Ella Fitzgerald. Hope you can react to her singing " HOW HIGH THE MOON / EPIC SCAT " .
My favorite song written by Big Mama Thornton is Ball and Chain. She recorded it on the Bay-Tone record label but they never released it but kept ownership of the copyright. Because she didn't own the copyright, when Janis Joplin recorded her cover of Ball and Chain live in concert at the Fillmore East in 1968, Big Mama Thornton didn't receive any royalties.
Jay and Amber! Please react to Little Anthony and The Imperials. 60’s soul, amazing voice, big hits… Hurt So Bad, Going Out Of My Head, I’m On The Outside Looking In. Trust me, he’ll blow you away.
Pre-echos of Janis Joplin. 'Didn't it rain' was my intro to Rosetta Tharpe...fascinating life story, phenomenal guitarist and the first women who made me research women of the blues...including this mistress of style.
Big Mama was a true force of nature. Dive into B.B. King's "Live At The Regal" album. Three nights at The Regal Theatre in Chicago were recorded with the best cuts of the run ending up on the album. A true masterpiece
Great reaction, Jay and Amber! Big Mama Thornton sure does have a great voice and style though, she was a soprano. There are a lot of women who sing high notes are sopranos and a lot of men who sing high notes who are tenors. Thank you for your reactions!
Now you can hear the Pain in her voice when she knows he's gone. This is a woman who really could feel AND sing the Blues. You should try some Koko Taylor next. She's considered a blues 'Shouter' so she'll give you a different taste of the blues. "Don't Mess with the Messer" and "Wang Dang Doodle" are two good ones.
Okay, now you have to do the band Over the Rhine and their song “Trouble”- you will NOT regret it and it will make Jay blush and Amber say “You go girl!”
First written by B.B. King, Jules Taub and Lucille Bogan and was first released by B.B. His was good. Damed good. Then Mama came around, and, well . . . . ah, yep, absolutely slayed it!!!!! And I believe that Buddy Guy was on guitar for that version. If so, no surprise there!!!
She was the musical mother of Janis and Elvis and worked with Johnny Ace and Muddy Waters - but interesting enough she survived them all even though she already died at the age of 57.
Big Mama Thornton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Etta James, Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie - these are the collective grandmothers of blues rock!
You got em covered pretty well ❤. Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and in much more modern times Koko Taylor.
@@Alewifes_Husband Sippie Wallace Is another one, her “Woman Be Wise” was covered by Bonnie Raitt
@@nolalou2 omg I forgot her!! 😉
And they will never, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER in a million years react to Lou Ann Barton. In fact, out of their half million subscribers, I bet myself and three other people who view this channel are the only ones who know who she even is.
AMEN !
Good job finding some of these old recordings. It keeps us aware of the real foundations of rock.

Awesome song!! Thats Buddy Guy on lead guitar! 🎸🔥
In the big wide river of Rock n Roll with all of its many roots Big Momma Thornton is a major tributary, feeding so many others who used her soul and technique to make the ‘60’s and ‘70’s such a joy to live through. This is the base that a mighty sound was built on. ✌️
Every time I heard Big Mama Thornton, I'm reminded of how much I LOVE the blues!! Thank you for playing this one 🙂
Janis grew up listening to Big Mama.
Thanks to my Mama, so did I!✌️❤
Very similar! Guitar is amazing!
@@bill8384That's Buddy Guy on the guitar. Yes, he was great.
@@ptournas Thanks. Was wondering who was on guitar. Thought maybe it was BB King.

That would be Eddie Boyd on piano and Buddy Guy on guitar. Eddie played on a slew of Chess records songs in the 50's.
Thank you! I knew somebody down here in these comments would know who's playing guitar. Sounds so much like B.B. King's style to me. But I can't claim to really know that much about it. The guitar on this really struck me, though.
Yes, and Jimm Lee Robinson on bass and Fred Below on drums.
I think the RS Family needs more Buddy Guy in our lives
All great choices tonight. Big Mama had such a powerful voice.
OMG, this brought tears to my eyes. The last time I heard this was with my Grandmother. I am over 60 now. What a blessing to live in a world with such music. I am making a Mama Thornton play list for my Saturday. i appreciate you two. You are full of surprises.
Big Mama's in the house, nuff said !!!
Oh Lawd! Have mercy! Call the fire department!!!! Amen!!!
Beautiful music at its best....
Can't beat originality, soulfulness and the voice...
Guitar also
What a sound. When I think of the blues this is what comes to mind. The foundation of so much future rock & roll creativity.
❤❤
You know what makes this song? She knows when to control her voice and when to knock you on your butt!!
Also, the piano is great but, the guitar is perfect!!!
Yes!!
Who is playing guitar? Sounds like BB King.
Amber you're batting 1000 today!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤. I'm going to recommend Koko Taylor... Wang Dang Doodle! 😄. She's amazing and another Blues Lady!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely Koko Taylor!!! Either Wang Dang or Hound Dog.
YES! Whang Dang Doodle!
also Koko's I'm a woman!
We just can't get enough of this! Always love Big Mama

Janis Joplin came to mind when I was listening to this.
give Ball and Chain by Big Mama Janis Loved her that's why she cover Ball and Chain thanks
I agree. She’s the G.O.A.T. I prefer to hear a woman’s voice singing the blues. There’s something real about it.
Big Mama's in the house, nuff said !!!
I saw this last night and it was so cool, I grew up on blues because my dad had a band and his idol was Mr BB King who also recorded Sweet little angle 😎😎😎
Finally.... Love me some Big Mama.
💖I love this and Ball N Chain which she wrote. She wrote so many great songs.
She never got any royalties for Janis Joplin's cover.
Ohhh. Here we go. BB King done this one also. Thank you.
BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and every classic blues singer you can think of recorded this song.
“she performed everything from rhythm and blues and West Coast blues to Juke Joint blues and Texas blues. Not only a singer, she also played harmonica and drums.”
A Helluva harp player!!
Big Mama rules.
Wow!!!! Might be the greatest combination of singers soulful vocal performance and musical accompaniment I've ever heard❤
Big Mama Thorton is one of my all-time favorite Blues singers!!! Love Love Love her!!!...
So many incredible well known artists listened to and love Big Mama Thornton. It doesn't take a genius to know why. Might I also suggest another Big Mama, Big Maybelle. This is closer to Chicago blues than Delta,
This is one of the best songs by one of the great blues singers of all time! BB King did a great version of this song also. You guys should check out Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton, two of the greatest blues guitarists of all time!
That was Buddy on guitar! Some really nice work, lost in the mix.
I have told you over and over and over…KOKO TAYLOR - WANG DANG DOODLE!
I must request Koko Taylor - "I'm A Woman"!! You'll love it!
I have requested Koko several times; love her.
I prefer Wang Dang Doodle, but that'll do.
Agree 100%
I love the blues. Something deep in my soul just resonates. The bass on this is great!
YES! YES! YES! GOOD on you young beauties!!
I love Big Momma Thornton is awesome. But my favorites are Etta James, Billie Holliday and Aretha Franklin ♥️🙏🏼✝️✌🏼😎
Big Mama wrote & performed Ball & Chain. Another singer you might like is Odetta, she leaned more folky & was another inspiration for Janis. My favorite by Odetta is Bald Headed Woman.
Odetta yes, found her through Janis
If you guys would ever watch the Elvis movie her character is in it. Elvis was a huge fan of hers!
My friend Walter Trout played in her band
Never heard of Big Mama Thornton, ❤magnificent
She and rosetta Tharpe are the true prototypes and Queens.of rock and roll and the genre would not be what it is without their music and influence.
They're thirty years apart. Sister Rosetta Tharpe made her first record in 1919. Big Mama didn't record anything until 1947.
Never heard of her. Wow......just wow.
Phenomenal! First time im hearing this...only knew Houndog by her...pure Blues
She didn't write Hound Dog. It was written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller.
"Ball and Chain" is another great Big Mama song
A Tip of the Hat to AMBER !!!! for a great GREAT JOB digging up the awesome Big Mama Thorton....she's the REAL DEAL......wonderful

Hound Dog was her song before it was Elvis'. It would be interesting to hear it.
Can't help but sway to this one. Ooooh.😊❤
You two sure do know how to pick the greats! Thank You and be well
Awesome voice and some excellent guitar behind her !
Buddy Guy on the guitar in this one. He is excellent.
Saw great concert late 60's in Seattle with Big Momma and Janis Joplin together.
That had to be truly awesome!
She never got royalties from Joplin's cover of Ball and Chain. The original label Thornton recorded it with decided not to release it but retained ownership of the copyright and licensed it to another label in 1968.
Just had to laugh. I’m sitting on my porch smoking a cigar drinking whiskey enjoying this reaction. You were spot on!
Please listen to Elmore James - brilliant slide guitar
Easy to see why Elvis loved her too. I was just thinking how a cigar and a little scotch would be perfect right now.

A1 choice with this song I picture whole family at night

So many wonderful female singers from back then. Have to include the great Ella Fitzgerald. Hope you can react to her singing " HOW HIGH THE MOON / EPIC SCAT " .
Nothing better than a '50s jazz duet by Ella and Louis. They did Dream a Little Dream of Me long before the Mamas and the Papas.
Such a powerful voice! Buddy Guy on guitar!
There are ALOT of reaction shows... but yours has to be the absolute best character. I love you two. Kudos. ❤
I meant the best chemistry.
