    Uncle Albert (played by Buster Merryfield) is introduced to replace Granddad (played by Lennard Pearce, who died 2 months earlier).

  • @BronyDanProductions
    @BronyDanProductions Рік тому +14

    Leonard Pearce had died just as they had started production on Series 4, (There are some publicity photos of them filming the next episode with Leonard, which was originally meant to be the first episode of the series). The crew were given two weeks off to grieve and John Sullivan had to write last week’s episode to explain why Grandad wasn’t in it and this one to show the funeral and to introduce Uncle Albert. David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst were obviously upset at losing Leonard and filming the funeral was difficult, since they had just been to Leonard’s actual funeral a week of two earlier.

      I'm glad they just didn't get a new actor to play Grandad
      This way seems more respectful

      @@TheReactingMan Honestly, that WAS the BBC’s initial suggestion for them to carry on, as they had already set a date for when the series was going to air. They were like ‘Just get a different actor, the audience won’t care’. Of course, John Sullivan and David Jason objected because Leonard WAS Grandad, and said that when a grandparent dies, you don’t just get a lookalike and carry on as if nothing’s changed. The other suggestion was getting an aunt to live them, and have a female lead as well, but David Jason didn’t like the idea saying that Del would not treat and aunt the same way he treated Grandad, like calling her a ‘silly old git’ and shoving her into the back of the van, so we got Uncle Albert.

    The joke with the hat was pure genius. I think this was the first time a funeral scene of a major character had appeared on a British TV comedy.

    Leonard Pearce who played Grandad passed away a couple of weeks before this episode so the actors emotions were real and raw because they lost a good friend in real life - it was a tough episode to react to and a sad one. Grandad was definitely missed but Uncle Albert is a great character in his own way and yes you are right he is definitely more energetic and fun. Personally I think the show gets much better from here because the writing got much better. The entire season is superb and the Christmas Special To Hull And Back is an epic one

  • @scottirvine121

    This is such a clever episode, not only does it brilliantly introduce Uncle Albert but the genius writing of John Sullivan, acted superbly by david and Nick…the ability to make you laugh one second and cry the next. No spoilers but it’s not the last time he does this. One of my favourites this, you see the real emotional side of Del, his vulnerabilities then his compassion and of course it’s the start of a whole new level of OFAH.
    PS loved your reaction to the Del and Rodney scene of how Del felt

      John Sullivan didn't know at first, how to bring in Uncle Albert in a a plausible way. All of his war time stories drive everybody insane. It is totally believable that Stan and Jean neglect him as Albert bores them to death with his war time stories and get on their nerves. It would have been too predictable that they were trying to fill the void, if Del Boy had just asked to Uncle Albert to 'move in' with him, as opposed to being 'lumbered with him.

    This was Buster Merryfield’s big break. He had only done a bit of stage work for his local theatre and the odd walk on for television, but his main job had been as a bank manager. Naturally, he was terrified about taking over Leonard’s role in the show, but both David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst supported him and encouraged him and he became a much loved member of the cast.

    After Grandad died, somebody at The BBC suggested getting an elderly aunt to come and live with Del Boy and Rodney in the flat. David Jason (the actor who plays Del Boy) was strongly against it, because he felt the show wouldn't be as funny having an older woman come and live with The Trotter clan. David didn't feel that Del could shove an old lady into the back of the three-wheeled van or say "Shut up, you daft old sod" to her, without being offensive. John Sullivan (the writer) instead decided to get another elderly man, who could come in and be Grandad's long-lost younger brother, so in came Uncle Albert.

    • @filmsforallnations

      The very first suggestion was to get a double/lookalike in and to put a scarf and trilby hat on the lookalike and for the cast to carry on, as if nothing had happened. David Jason was opposed to the idea, because they didn't feel comfortable with somebody else playing Grandad. They wanted to acknowledge Grandad had died.
