Go ahead, you can cry! I was gone so much as a Marine when my son was growing up. He’s given me 3 wonderful grandsons, I try to make it up with them, now retired. My boy is almost 40 and an awesome young man. I have the Camp Lejeune leukemia, I just want to live long enough to see my precious grandsons grow up, and continue to see my son and his wife continue to flourish

The thing that gets me about this, is that he loved his son and thought he was doing right by working so much to get the money to get him everything he needs, but in reality, what he needed most was time with his dad. The kid in this story isn't angry or resentful, he still loves his dad all the way through the years, so much so that he grows up repeating that same mentality, he now hasn't time for anything but work. So sad, and big reality check. ❤

I enjoyed your reaction. This was my parenting song that helped remind me to pay attention when my son was growing up. I still screwed up, but not as much as I might have. Thanks for sharing about your Dad. I'm sure you will be a great Dad when it's your turn.

Cats in the cradle is a story. Little boy blue and the man in the moon is a childs story. Then all hell breaks through. Although the dad thought he was doing the right thing and working his butt off. But sometimes your time is much more important to a child.

Actually, he didn’t write this song. It was brought to him by his wife and he put it aside and said he wasn’t interested. Sometime past and his wife had a child soon after that, he went ahead and took it out and put the lyrics to music so he did write the music part of it. He died in a car crash in his 30s, his son looks just like him they look like they could be twins. You could say his son is just like him.

My father was gone a lot when we (my brothers and I) were growing up.
I cannot say that we had the strongest relationship but we loved each other.
He died at nearly 94 years old on June 01, 2023.
We love him and will have a ceremony in his honor soon in Florida.

Almost to 100K. Keep it up, bro
edit: My father was around when I was growing up. He was an alcoholic who was physically and mentally abusive to everyone around him. I prayed my entire childhood that my parents would get divorced and I planned his murder many times but never went through with it. He died of a heart attack at age 58 and it was a relief to us all.
I'm sure it was hard growing up without a dad but, sometimes, it's a blessing.

Thank you for your reaction. Like you I had an abusive alcoholic dad, begged our mom to divorce him. At 12 I was rummaging through the bathroom cabinet to see if there was something I could put in his wine to poison him. My mother refused to divorce because "What would people think." and "I don't wanna be alone". It didn't matter to her that her children were suffering. At 19 I finally arranged the divorce for her. It took me 44 years to realize my mother was just as abusive to us as my father. My dad being the overt narcissist, my mother being the covert narcissist with a martyr complex. Glad I cut her out of my life too. Many lessons learned. Trying my very best not to make the same mistakes. Much blessings to you.

I bet a lot, if not most fathers feel the same way. Being a 'babyboomer' we were programmed to work and provide for the family. We were of the mindset of being a great provider, but definitely dropped the ball on spending time with the kids. Being a single dad didn't help either. I love my kids and thankfully we've got a close, loving relationship.

Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. I had his "Greatest Stories Live" double album. "Cat's In The Cradle" is his most famous piece. "Taxi" was another big hit for Harry Chapin. Ten years later he followed it up with "Sequel" showing what happened to the 2 people in the story. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "Mail Order Annie", "They Call Her Easy", "I Wanna Learn A Love Song", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", "Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life". We lost him too young in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 38. He left a great legacy of music.

Correct he didn't spend enough time with his son and then his son didn't have time to spend with him when he grew up because he had a life and problems of his own!
I didn't know my dad, I had Uncles though that made time for me and they were an important part of my life while I was growing up, I miss them very much!
As long as you make time for your own children when you have them this won't happen to you. Reading to them was an important part of the life I had with my children when they were little and still is a part of our lives to this day, we are always doing something that involves reading!

This is a song about 2 people, father and son, who love each other very much, but miss out constantly. Cat's in the Cradle refers to an old wife's tale that said a cat would get into an infants crib and suffocate the child because they had milky breath.

I have three girls, 27, 21, and 9. They grow up so fast! I worked a lot, still do, but I still tried to spend as much time as possible with my girls. I still missed so much, and it hurts me that I missed one second of their lives. I still have so much time with them, and I am 47 now, so I am blessed that my wife and I were young parents, because we can still enjoy time with them, and Grand kids. Thanks!!!

The tough part is that they probably really did want to see each other and spend time with each other but other stuff just always got in the way and they never made the effort to make it happen. That's easy to do whether it's with family or friends that maybe don't live right around the corner. I have a couple friends and we often will say "It's been so long. We need to hang out some time." But the last time we actually hung out was years ago at this point.

What I always got out of this song is how we always put things off because we're busy and then one day you wake up and you wonder where the time went... He worked and worked to give his son a better life but never really had time to play catch with him. Then his son grew up and was repeating the same cycle. Make time for people. They may not be here tomorrow 🙏

Most people who have not had provider fathers misunderstand this song. The father was caught up in the rat race to provide for his son and never got to spend the quality time he wanted. In the end his son turned out to be quality man that made the father proud, on the same treadmill of life trying to take care of his family. The song is about how the forces of life which require most men to support families, forces them to choose between spending quality time with children and work. In the end, both the father and son deeply loved and admired each other, but missed out on time with each other. Hence, the words "I'm going to be just like you dad" and "It been sure nice talking to you dad." The son turned out fine in the sense that he was educated and a hard working family man. I have lived that same scenario with my father. I almost moved away after college to work, but the forces of fate placed us in the same city. I got to spend a few hours each week with my father in the last six years before his death. Most people have no idea the love and admiration which develops between a father and son when you realize how much that man has proven his love to you through sacrifice. I live to carry on my father's name with honor, dignity and sacrifice.

Yeah, well, even before he died, this song makes most men choke up. The Dad/Son relationship is often a difficult one, but that's because it's so very important. Lessons about tending to things that are really important, because we all get so caught up in the little stupid things along the way.
"The cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, little boy blue, and the man in the moon..." is referencing four children's nursery rhymes and children's stories.

Neither the dad or son are bad people, they are just working class people and as so, you have to work...but if you can change things...but sometimes you can't as feeding and clothing your kids is more important that being there sometimes. But if you can feed and clothe your kids....opt to look spend time with them, especially male kids who will go down the same path as you have.

Man, what a heart breaking song, always makes me tear up, so relevant to so many people and it's timeless in it's message. You started by saying how much time flies, then this song is saying the same thing, if we can really take the song's message on board we won't have those same regrets when it's just too late. The 'cat's in the cradle' was an expression for trouble brewing, originally an ancient belief that a cat would suck the life out of a baby if left unattended. The song is based on a poem Chapin's wife had written about the poor relationship her first husband had with his own father.
BTW just a couple of technical things, sounds with that chirp sound you have a smoke alarm or something that needs a new battery, don't ignore that, it could save your life. The other is, I know you've had headphone issues so you're listening on speakers at the moment, but sounds like the video is a direct audio feed but it's also picking up the music through your microphone, it then adds a tiny delay to all the sound making it slightly weird to listen to, like a narrow echo sound. Maybe monitor the music quieter through your speakers and run your mic through a noise gate.

He cut in front of a rig in a 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit, on the expressway. Can you imagine? His gas tank was pierced and the car exploded. You should be telling me, I shouldn’t be telling you.

Now I'm 60. Learned long ago to stop chasing the dime and to stop working for others, and making their pockets fat while I just get by, plus stuck working THEIR schedule and hardly getting to watch my young ones growing up. Most dads are like this. They have to work themselves, to death, to provide for their families so they grow up fed, housed and clothed.
I don't remember my dad much growing up, he was at work. It was always super special whenever we got to play catch or do something with him. But he was always at work. And, I said like the boy in thr song does, I'm gonna be like my dad. Turned out true. Come full circle. It's poignant how songs and music can be such an accurate representation of someone else's life.
Now, I am at work, I don't get to visit my dad much. He does his stuff. He is at work but now for less time than when I was growing up and I am at work now more. He's gonna be moving and I have this urge inside to be around him but I have a resistance in me. That resistance in me stems from my childhood, my dad instilling in me the importance of being at work.
I question now, how I was raised. I saw my dad with another woman after my mom died, odd relationship. I went to give the young child a zippo to play with cause they were making noise. That lady looked at me funny, more like irritated. I said "what? Lighters ain't bad for kids to play with. He gave us bullets, wrenches and lighters to play with. Making fires in the garage with sticks and shit." But I guess that's not a good way to be raised, yet that's how I was raised and how I think you ought to be raised. Now I question why did he rise me this way if he's gonna change it all up on me. There is a slight resentment and frustration.
I like this song because it stings, for me in more ways than one. It teaches me th value of spending time with someone, how important it is and how easy it is to lose the opportunity. It stings in that manner because I know it will end some day, stings because I will regret not spending time with him now. It stings because I am frustrated and don't know what to say now and know I will hurt when he passes away. It stings because all my life I will always try to be like him. And that hurts, I love my dad but it just hurts. Feeling like you were raised wrong seeing him with another woman and child being completely different than with me. Wtf was wrong with me, your own blood? Why do I have to look a fool, offering a lighter to a kid, thinking it's okay and everyone stares at you as if you're a lunatic? What is wrong with how I was raised to be at work? And he dedicates his time to this kid and woman? But he was at work and not with my mom and me and my brother? What was wrong? I love the man but I'm hurt
If you read to here, thanks for taking the time. I needed to vent, this one bought out a lot of emotions.

Only you can break the cycle! I'm 46 and my dad decided he wants nothing to do with me and I met him at 14 years old for the first time. Love and prayers and hope to you and your family

This song/lyrics are timeless... and paints a real life picture of time lost, and irretrievable, once in a lifetime moments. What a sad realization for the Father who didn't MAKE the time to atleast sit and talk to his son.. a son who didn't ask for material things from a father who was more dedicated to a job, than to his son. I can't imagine a worst place to sleep on every night than a bed of regrets... Tomorrow is never promised; a hug, an "I love you Son", cost nothing, but are precious and priceless. If one can't find an hour to go share some burgers, listen to your kid's favorite music blasting on your car's radio, then you got what you deserve... If your marriage, your children don't have first priority... All the fame or $$ in the world will NEVER fill the void... Ask Tom Brady... PEACE & 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

It’s an incredible live performance from Australian TV during the early 60’s.

A great storyteller, gone far too soon. His final concert, as it happens, was in my hometown of Hamilton, Canada; it was videotaped and used to be available on VHS. Harry's Greatest Stories Live album contains a short ballad called The Shortest Story, which may be the saddest song I have ever heard, and which makes Cat's In The Cradle sound joyous...
The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics is another song along these lines. Another, with a "happier ending", is Leader Of The Band by Dan Fogelberg, which became a hit while Dan's father (a former bandleader) was still alive and turned Fogelberg senior briefly into a celebrity...

A song about a man who was focused on money and material success who had no time to be a dad to his son.. Later on when His son is older the man wants to have a closer relationship with His son but by that time it is way too late to establish that relationship.. The grown up son by this time has no desire to establish a close connection with his dad.. The son only has time for his work and his kids.. He is polite to his dad but there is no warmth there.. Nothing real.. Nothing deep.. The time to establish a close relationship with your kids is when they are little kids.. Don't try establishing a relationship when they have reached college age... You will have missed the boat..
