One of the old superstitions was if an owl was hooting outside your window several nights in a row it meant you were going to die. Also planting by the moon was supposed to bring a good crop.
It is about a girl and her horse that died. Then when it was his time he dreamed she was coming to get him and he'd go to his death riding wildfire with her.
Exactly, you have to understand the owl reference, and
what it means as a harbinger of death, to get the lyrics
completely, and how she and the horse are coming back
for him. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful song.
As a horse crazy girl child, this song gave me the shivers.
Michael Murphey said the reason behind the song He had a dream about a horse. He wrote the lyrics after waking up from a dream and writing the lyrics down. It was very popular back in the day. Hope you are doing well. Great reaction!
How Beautiful!❤️
I’m glad you like it! Keep playing these beautiful songs! ❤️
Michael Murphey is an American singer-songwriter of mostly country & western & pop music. He has some great hits such as "Carolina In The Pines", "What's Forever For", "A Long Line Of Love", "What She Wants", "Don't Count The Rainy Days", "Maybe This Time", "A Mansion On The Hill", "Cherokee Fiddle" etc.
don't forget "backsliders wine"
First concert I went to was Michael Murphy, Harry Chapin, and Seals & Crofts. What a great concert!
One of my favorite one-hit wonders of all time. So beautiful and sumptuous.
Wel written song! Love it
I was playing this song earlier today. I loved it when I was a teen girl in the 1970’s. I would cry listening to it and it still gets to me even now.
Old folks say when a hoot owl keeps howling outside your window your gonna die soon. ❤
Hoot Reaper lol
Saw him in the late 70s at Haskell Indian JR College with Buffy St Marie! Charity event!
Lawrence Kansas..
Beautiful❤❤❤❤❤
This is a remastered version of the song. I think the original recording is much better. It wasn't nearly as easy in the 70's to figure/find out the meaning of a song, as it is today. Sometimes we had to come up with our own interpretation, as it related to us.
This is how I understood the song:
The song is a love story; told from the young man's perspective. The young man loves a young woman with a pony named Wildfire. He fondly remembers the times she rode her pony down the mountain to see him. One winter there came a killing frost (the woman died). In grief over the woman's death, the pony breaks down it's stall and runs off into the blizzard... never to be seen again (the pony died). The Hoot owl being outside his window for six nights in a row signifies the passing of time. So, many years go by (the man's lifetime). Now old, the man contemplates his own death and imagines his long lost love coming down the mountain on her pony to meet him. Another harsh winter hits. As the (now old) man dies, he's on Wildfire with the love of his life and they're riding into eternal peace (Heaven) together.
Such a beautiful story and one of my all-time favorite songs. Thanks to whoever recommended this song. And, thanks for the reaction video. ✌
This is an excellent and beautiful description of the song! Nailed it 100%!
Just an fyi, this isn't the original video, looks like a fan video to me. She and Wildfire are coming back for him to take him to the heavens with them.
I can tell it was a fan video! This was the one the person requested I do
Yes! I love this song it’s very beautiful!
I'm not surprised either about understanding the song. As you said, symbolism. Reading the lyrics is more helpful. I'm sorry you didn't get it. I always thought it was the farmer was getting tired of his life and was waiting for what I call an "Angel" horse to come and he could ride away on the horse.
Don’t apologize man, sometimes the symbolism is hard to decode plus I love puzzles
This song brings tears to my eyes every time.
A ghost horse? Maybe that's where night "mares" come from.🐎😂
This sounds like a remastered version.
Say Hey Mugs, I applaud you for staying with this one. I can see you struggling to 'get it.'
I'm with you. There's a lot to like with this track. But, I always thought the piano intro and outro was awkward at best and that the song about a ghost girl and pony was kind of corny.
And yet, I'm still moved by it. So, despite misgivings, if a song ultimately moves me, I consider it a success...at least, if we agree that one of the bases for judging music is its capacity to move us emotionally.
Cheers from Boston.
Yes it may be corny to some but made we teary eyed.
❤❤❤

Mugs I asked fr this one on Buymefreecupofcoffee just a song I recall very well, not rock, not roll, not jazz or blues. Some might call it soft rock, I like it and just call it "Wildfire".
Thanks Charles you been requesting some gold lately!!
Please check out Chris Melanson from Canada the song is called Room's For Rent it is the best REAL country song I have heard in a long time it was released last September
I highly suggest not watching music videos...just listen. Take it in and let it play through then go back and talk afterwards. There is a 1975 live version, more mature Michael and it's amazing. As a young girl back when this came out my best friend and I would be moved to tears and sing this with the AM radio. Hon this was back when I was just a kid! I'm almost 60...takes me back in time. I think this actually is the live song but they reposted it...and it sounds like they altered it. Go find that real live video! Don't waste your time on these remastered sounds
How about listening more and pausing less.
It's way over his head
You are too young.
