Harry Nilsson - TV Interview (June 12, 1982)

- This one is BIG, and I knew when I stumbled on it I had to immediately post it. This one was not actually very difficult to edit, but it took a couple of grueling days to find a way to download, upload and move around the 1.2 GB file that resulted from it. In the interview (I am honestly not sure what station it is / if it aired or not) Harry talks about a range of subjects from the murder of John Lennon, all the way to why he would have written Without You differently, had he been given the chance. This is a VERY cool interview, because you rarely see them in the first place with Harry, and before this video being posted, the longest TV interview available on UA-cam was around 5 minutes, which is pretty sad. So ladies and gentlemen, it's time, you finally have the opportunity to get into the head of Harry Schmilsson. Hope you enjoy!

Remember... my late brother brought a 3/4 inch portable video recorder and camera to Harry's house in Belair and taped this interview in 1982. I have a still photo he had taken during said interview which includes Beau. My big brother was responsible for filming Harry and John Lennon in 1974 and I hope to create a mini documentary about that day in Central Park. Cheers!
That is very cool!! I hope I'm not oversteping, but do you have any of that central park footage you might be able to share with me? Even if you don't want me to post it, as a Harry fan myself I would kill to see that Central Park concert.
(2/2) By the way! If you want me to credit your brother in the description or anything like that please let me know!
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue I trust that Harry's family has the original tape and know who made the recording, as for me, it's nice to view it again after 40 years.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue Stay tuned!
@@beatlesfan1964 If you need trustworthy people to make it digital, message me. I can refer you to sever people around the world, I would love to help in any way to make this publicly available.
This guy was fascinating and I’m convinced one of the most brilliant minds who ever made music. He was just low-key about it, starting at 28 and not doing live shows. He didn’t get sucked into the spectacle of showmanship.
So glad I finally got to hear the man behind the music I’ve grown up with- and see him in a bathrobe!
He felt personally burned when John Lennon was shot. They were good friends and we don’t get many good friends in this life. Harry had more talent in his little finger than the whole body of artists before and after, but like the true artist and writer he was, he couldn’t control his emotions and drank himself into oblivion. RIP to the artist’s artist.
Great post. Every word true as they are poignant.❤
He miraculously lived another 12 years after this.
I hope more long Harry interviews make their way to youtube. Search every couple months for new stuff
Unfortunately, he did few interviews, especially tv interviews. I do have one in my posession, it's a radio interview from the 70s on Flo and Eddie's show, that one I'll be posting soon.
This is an absolute treasure!!
Thank you for sharing this and all the other stuff. From one Harry head to another x
No problem! That's why I do it!!
An amazing talent who succumbed to the bottle, Harry Nilsson was a rambling and incoherent shambles by the time this video was shot in 1982. Still, drunk and out of his mind, he is much more fascinating than the controlled robots galavanting as pop stars today. I would love to hear more about Pussy Cats. I am sure he took so many tales of the infamous “Lost Weekend” with him to his grave. Thank you for uploading!
Yeah, he's drunk and constantly rubbing his nose on here
What a darling man. Yes, I knew him.
Wow thanks for sharing this great interview ! Harry Nilsson, what a mind and heart and voice.
Thank you for posting and editing this rare Harry clip. His talent as a singer songwriter was one of the finest of my lifetime. His devotion to his six children and beloved wife Una is how I remember him. Also his Gun Control Advocacy after Lennon’s death was remarkable.
Rare indeed! A real gem. I would expect Harry's friends from the old days, Mickey Dolenz, etc, would love to see this video. Thanks for posting.
GOD, I LOVE YOU HARRY. SO MUCH. ❤️ You are are so honest and I'm so glad I finally got to hear you like this, right from your own house. Haha Love you too much. ❤️
"I heard the captain say" is from the band Procol Harum. The song is A Salty Dog. AMAZNG interview!
Never saw this one. You've got some real gold on this channel.
Thanks so much, really hope you enjoy it! :)
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue I'm back for another go. I wish I had a pal like Harry to hang out with from time to time, this interview is so much like hanging out with your best buddy.
Really couldn't tear myself away from this interview. Thank you.
That's what I'm here for!
His open answers to questions made me think he had great respect for the interviewer
Very true.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue Or she was very pretty
@@lisaletto7337 Well at this point I believe he was married to Una. I don't think he would cheat on her or think about doing so.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue on second thought. I once heard a great interview of his given just because the guy was interested in what he had to say!
@@lisaletto7337 Yeah, I think he was just genuinely happy to talk about the subject (with anyone).
AWESOME! Thanks for the gift!!
thx for the upload
Harry was obviously a genius. He could "detune" himself with cigarettes and booze and still be a force to be reckoned with conversationally. I love how he uses the "short putt" reference early on. Just an amazing mind.
Harry, love your honesty and your mind. You are the best. We miss you so much. ❤️
Thanks for this
How to Write a Song - I played that on UA-cam just yesterday. (UA-cam means not having to scrabble to find CDs/albums.) Such a clever song in and of itself. Thanks so much for putting this up. As someone once said, you either "get" Nilsson or you don't. Lovely to see how much he loved his kids. Hope there's a Losst & Founnd 2 someday. RiP Harry.
There's certainly enough material left over from his final sessions. Right now, there's no indication that any of it will be released, unfortunately. Luckily, however, most of it has found its way to UA-cam on bootlegs.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue: Thank you - was hoping that was the case. The 300-Pound Guy number didn't appear on L&F, so there's more. Hoping the outtakes from That's the Way it Is get a release too. You're doing a great job here! Cheers from England.
@@AlexAlexon3897 Appreciate it, thanks!
245lb Man is on Pappa’s Got A New Brown Robe” and most of the “Losst and Found” unmolested as he recorded them. It’s on UA-cam take a listen I love hearing that song.
“If write it on guitar, place your guitar upon your knee, if write it on piano don’t do that”
He is, at times, one of the funniest lyricists. Not to mention, saddest, poignant, and gifted. He could write about anything. And those beautiful melodies. Harry was a gift to music that people either eventually find or, very sadly, miss out on completely.
Love you for doing this. Y’all are lucky. Wish I’d been part of his genius. ☮️ ❤️ 😊
Harry...I don't cry easily but wept my eyes out the day he died and left me with only Randy 💔
Why is she asking him about all those hippy acts, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, The Doors, ffs? He obviously has no interest. Ask him about the artists he says he respects, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman, John Lennon.
Ray Charles was a hero to him as well.
At the end of the interview we viewed (and as you mention in the description) Harry suggested he might have changed " I guess that's the way the story goes...." to " that's the way the story goes" in the song Without You, arguably his biggest single. I'm glad he didn't. He did release the song Without Her which he did write.
It's weird. He opened a whole can of worms with this because I know for a fact that there is a song that he wrote, which uses the term 'I guess'. (And although it counts, the one I am thinking of is not "I Guess The Lord Must Be In NYC") I hate to say it but whatever song it is, is blanking on me at the moment. I'll let you know if I come up with the name. A big reason (if the only reason) he recorded Without You is because him and Richard Perry both knew it was going to be a hit. One of them may have thought that changing the lyrics could jeprodize that.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue Harry was a contradiction in terms by nature. Let me know if you figure out what song had it in the lyrics. Yeah its ironic that a song he wrote has it in the title. Half the songs he recorded were written by someone else e.g. Rock Around the Clock and Mr. Bojangles which both were done better by Bill Haley and The Comets and Bob Dylan respectively. Again, he let Monkeys record Cuddle Toy and Three Dog Night record One, both of which did better than his version. Yet he challenged others to turn out better renditions than his. Go figure. Still ♥️ him. I play Nilsson Schmilsson and Son of Schmilsson in their entirety every Sunday. Don't do that with any other artists every week. He left a void in rock history that nobody else can fill. As I understand it he's never been inducted into the R&RHoF which I consider a travesty. Others have been on fewer accolades.
@@UserName_no1 He is a real oddity, he didn't do things like the others did. Although I partially agree, I believe there are some songs like Spaceman that his version is undoubtedly the best. I understand your points though.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue I agree 💯% . This was one of my crank it up songs and when that bass drum would kick in it would rattle my fillings. It was spot on for the time (the Apollo mission) and was better than EJs Rocket Man. It left you with a sense of what astronaut life was like while connecting to the youth of that time.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue I can’t think of one he wrote but his covers of America’s “I Need You” and Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” also have the words “I guess…”
It’s a miracle he lived another 12 years
I love it and I’m going to share Nilsson’s interview with Paul Williams the singer songwriter! I hope you can post some of Paul Williams’s rare stuff soon if you can
Well I'm afraid I'm not hugely familiar with Paul Williams but I'd be happy to take a look. How do you know Mr. Williams?
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue through a friend of his and he became a great friend to me 😄 in 2020.
@@miguelrenteria7672 Ah, that's very cool!
Devastated ever since his best friend John Lennon's passing.
I fairly idolize this man's copious talent and achievement. He was a full bore genius,

The 5th , blond ,American Beatle.
He was much more talented than any beatle
I LOVE THE DISCUSSION ABOUT YOUR BATHROBE! Haha. ❤️

-Bob Dylan?
-hell of a wonderful,, wacky kind of a guy. A real bowl of laughs
🤣🤣🤣
Great clip. There's a cut at 1:05:55 where it cuts into another part of the conversation where it sounds like they had been talking about Paul McCartney, as Harry continues on to critique the song Attention he gave to Ringo. Anyone know anything about this cut portion, or is there transcript? Thanks for posting!
I unfortunately don't have too much information on this interview, and there is not a transcript that exists. This is the only cut of the interview that I've seen around, so I'm not sure what could have happened with any lost footage, or where that might exist.
Wow, he was very very lifted. Great stuff.
23:30 he claims he sang on "you're so vain"!
That's really cool!
He did. He was booked to do the backing vocals, Mick Jagger happened to pop in and also recorded backing and can be heard best on the “don’t you!” part of the chorus. On the final version, Nilsson’s backing track is turned down to the point where it’s not identifiable.
when you think about the former beauty of this man's voice, and the profundity of his gift, this is a little hard to watch.
I mean, have you ever listened to "Flash Harry"?
It depends on your standpoint. All I Think About Is You is the song that got me into Nilsson, so I prefer the lived-in voice. Something like I Don't Need You sounded extra-authentic with the whiskeyed tones.
I am happy to see Harry in a video! Who is the interviewer?
Absolutely no idea!
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue ….So where did you get this recorded video from?
@@carladiciaccio8955 Found this one on an online forum. There wasn't any info attached.
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue ….well I thought Harry was a cool guy, now I know he was! Thanks for posting the video!
@@carladiciaccio8955 No problem, that's what I'm here for!
Why are all the great ones gone? Nilsson, Belushi, Lowell George, Lennon, Orbison, Patsy Cline, Garcia, Harrison....
You forgot Elliot Smith, Jeff Buckley, Chris Whitley
Greatest
Hard to find a bigger fan of Harry's, yet I can't help but think he would have protected his wife and children from an armed intruder in a NY minute. If He wouldn't have, well, that would have been his choice to live with. Castle Law, etc. I will go as far as to say that John Lennon would have done the same to protect Sean and Yoko. Flat as you make a pancake, it still has two sides. RIP Harry, and John.
82년도 초등학생 시절로 기억하죠 해리닐슨과 전 32살 차이나죠
Christ I wish people would stop having a go at him for being drunk, his best friend had not long been killed & he was obviously dulling the pain
I love Harry but he was such a naive dork about handguns.
I think that was because he dearly missed John Lennon. Even if you don't agree with his point of view on handguns, I think we can both agree that people jump to seemingly outrageous claims when they've lost one of they're best friends.
He probably believes that calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive to stop someone from taking your life is the only answer !
This comment didn’t age well did it pal^
@@olliehyden9563 What do you mean? It did. Call 911 and wait 45 minutes to save children. it is OK to have a cause. Harry was owned by this cause and he essentially disappeared during this time from selling albums.
I am disappointed that I watched the entire video and there was nothing about Paul. It appears to be cut. It can be found other places but I thought this would elaborate that part of the interview. 😏
Well, sorry. The only other place I've seen this is Vimeo, and that has the same cut as this. The posts that the Nilsson estate made on TikTok are directly from my post. Please be aware, I'm not the one that cut it. As far as I know, this is the fullest version available online at this time. Correct me if I'm wrong. Hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
@@HarryNilssonCatalogue It was still pretty funny ☺️

"Out lipped " lmao...
I have that video 😍
This guy looks like Paul McCartney, just saying
It would be great if half of these UA-cam videos would actually turn the freaking volume up! Do you guys not know how to turn the volume up?
The videos aren't usually intended for people whose refrigerator's are blasting 24/7, but (although this one is quiet) I think you'll find that the others are perfectly fine.
I think Lemmy from Motorhead also thought Little Richard was the greatest Rock vocalist of all time.
He should have not worried about guns. He should have been more worried about becoming a drunk and liver damage.
That was his own choice. Being shot by a Trumpleton is no one's choice.

Sorry, I know the interview is really quiet. Maybe at some point I'll increase the volume and reupload it.
That’s a nice hat.
Shit . I assumed he was English.
Nope
He's rambling and incoherent at times. I wonder how many of those he drank before the interview started Horrible interviewer
I take it its not iced tea?
Apple Juice, of course.
Harry, why didn't you just go get dressed?, haha! ❤️
He probably purposefully got in a bath robe specifically for this interview haha
Schilsson costume.
I wonder if anyone suggested to Harry that guns don’t kill, people do.
Maybe someone should have told him 911 may not save your life from someone trying to kill you.
Really?
Maybe he felt a need to get the message out after having lost a friend. And maybe this isn't the place to elaborate on the subject, but since you opened that door let's follow your logic shall we?
Cars, trucks, buses, planes, trains, land mines, grenades, dynamite, nitro glycerine, torpedoes, cannons, tanks, fighter jets, military drones, war ships, any materials in sufficient quantities for making bombs, nuclear weapons don't kill, people do.
But there are liscences and restrictions regulating their use and out right bans for civilian possession of some of these items. Why? Because it just doesn't make sense for civilians to be in possession of military grade weaponry.
Since Harry's not here to defend his stance on the issue, I shall take up the cause in his stead. Put that in your pipe and smoke it (a reference to the cover of his Nilsson Schmilsson album/CD. Which, BTW, was not the original art design. Originally the face of the vinyl albums, not the cd's, consisted of dots. The dots that spelled out the words were multicoloured and intersected at the L's like a crossword puzzle or +. The rest of the dots in the *field were plain white dots. Anyone in possession of one of these albums is sittin pretty.)
*.eg. the stars on 🇺🇲 sit in a field of blue.

@catcrazy336: Thanks for pointing out the pointless (pun).
It's easier to kill with a gun than without. The existence of guns generally makes killings more likely
