Thanks for uploading. Harry was such a cool guy. Great interview, especially at the end when he talks about his recovery from alcoholism. You don't hear much of about that side of Harry.
We grew up with Harry , my father had a love affair with this mans music. It was ALL that we listened to , up till he kind of stopped making music. My brother met him and got a signed B/W photo at a beatle fest, he signed it "remember christmas"! My father passed when i was 15 so i was unable to listen to Harry's music for many years but, when the tribute album (adrian belew fan) came out i was all over that. We saw the doc as soon as it was online as i am a huge fan of harry. Its crazy to me how few people i meet know him, compared to his magical voice, i mean come on .... was he even human? amazing , thats an overused word that describes this guys voice . a gift from god. a true phenomenon. RIP Harry Edward Nilsson III
First and foremost, thank you so much for posting both the full uncut version and just the conversation portion. I love hearing Harry's songs, but in this case I was dying just to hear what they said (and I'll hear the songs later), so I really appreciate you posting both so I didn't have to skip through any of the others. Really nice and important I think to have both uploads, so thank you for that. Secondly, thank you for the wonderful interview and getting it to all of us. There is ALWAYS a severe drought of Harry material, which is a grave shame, so anything new and informative is always appreciated. This was a fabulous interview, with a great job done by Pete and a really relaxed, opened, and hopefully appreciated Harry Nilsson relaying his story. Obviously because he never appeared again, it was nice to hear it almost as a biography, so that it really covers everything (at least up until Pussy Cats) as oppose to it just focusing on one era. Would have been nice for Harry to return to dig deep into other areas, but because he never could its nice to have the full story. Its awesome to hear him talk about all this stuff, and particularly going into specifics about stuff like Everybody's Talkin' and You Can't Do That and such. Pete did a really good job on touching all the right stuff (why Harry didn't do concerts, why he took such an odd approach to his career) and Harry was more than obliged to answer. I also LOVED the end, which is also so sad, because he finally seemed so happy and the 90s was a great time for artists that were older to start getting rediscovered, with CD box sets and younger people citing them as influences. I think Harry really would have maybe not made a comeback, but lived a content older life. Its nice to hear he had finally gotten his life back on track and into shape. Unfortunately as we know, his heart attack and early death was proof it had already taken its toll, but its nice to see he didn't die as a drunk or something. This is a coherent Nilsson and one that understands his mistakes and knows how to move forward. That is the most comforting thing to come from this, which unfortunately is simultaneous in the sadness that would ultimately befall him. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of other Harry fans for this. It is a joy and a must listen, and was even used many times in the Nilsson documentary! This is an important piece of the Harry Nilsson history told by the man himself! Its criminal they are talking about his first year of eligibility into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in this and 15 years later he is still not in, and never even been nominated. Reprehensible. He shouldn't have gone in first ballot, but surely by 2000, and absolutely by 2010, they should have rightfully put him in.
What a gem! Thanks fir uploading this! Love both these guys! Surprised at hiw deep Harry's voice sounds considering his octave range. He is one of the few that can sing so high and so low - and Pete Fornitale- that's a voice that I will always love. If you grew up in the NYC tri state area and listened to fm radio (rock stations) then you knew Pete's voice!
Unfortunately, Harry "blew out" his vocal cords in a screaming contest with John Lennon during the "Pussycats" sessions. A very sad turn of events. Of course, he was still able to carry a tune and still had a pleasant voice, but it was raspy after that, and he did not have nearly the vocal range he'd had previously...
Harry had six children. It would be interesting, a boredom killer, to ask his sons if any of them enjoys dressing in a suit and tie shortly before ordering a drink from a bartender. Harry did that in the 1960s when he worked for a bank. Has anyone here seen 1960s photos of Harry dressed in a suit and tie? I have.
"Only You" - I think.... ua-cam.com/video/7EZSIQJ4lC4/v-deo.html This was originaly released with Ringo's lead vocal but John recorded a guide vocal which is heard here with Harry's harmonies. Harry is so pleased about it because he didn't know that John's guide vocal existed and that it had been mixed with the rest of the backing track making it the only song with Harry and John both singing on it.
@@HarryNilssonArchive It later found its way onto "The John Lennon Anthology". Since listening to this interview, I wonder if the Lennon estate bought that tape off of the Nilsson estate, or if they had their own copy.

He toned down, doesn't sound like he went cold turkey.

Sail Away..from Nilsson Sings Newman is outstanding.
"Sail Away" wasn't on that album. I believe it was on "Pussycats".

Rest In Peace Harry and Zach Nine Nilsson.
Edit: ignore the name and the profile picture
Haha, he certainly looks like a "swede"
Like Ronnie Peterson !
Looked a bit like David "kid" Jensen!
What song is the tape of John's singing that Harry brought?
