Why are my fellow maritime south east Asians so petty? It doesn't matter if the cakes are from Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore as long as they are delicious! As someone who has lived in these three countries let me tell you that we're more similar to each other than you think.
Can't help it if Singapore, the smallest nation in South East Asia, and among the smallest in the world, has a larger impact on the world than most of her neighbours.
the title confused me a bit as first time i read it. but actually, after watch it, it's not about claiming, but the content is telling about how a person moved to singapore from indonesia a while ago, try to make INDONESIA'S CAKE and sell it, and respectly it now generously knowing. Very nice, as the world may know Indonesia is a big country with a rich culture, and these culture is mixed with a very delicious traditional cake.
I wonder why there are so many negative comments about this video. It is just about this Indonesian lady, Anastasia Liew who migrated to Singapore and became a successful entrepreneur pursuing her passion for bakery. Obviously she had brought along recipes for cakes and kuehs from Indonesia. Bengawan Solo had since slowly add on local Malay, Peranakan and Chinese Kuehs to their product line. Example the Ang Ku kueh (Red Tortoise Kueh) is of Chinese/Peranakan origin. Maybe "Bengawan Solo conquered Southeast Asia" is misleading but they sure have made these Southeast Asian cakes and snacks famous. For those who never heard of Bengawan Solo, their Chiffon Pandan Cake is a best seller at Changi Airport, especially to the Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Chinese tourists.
"Bengawan" literally means "river" in Javanese (in high register, the low register version is "kali"). Bengawan Solo refers to a specific river in Central Java.
This is what makes Singaporean different than Malaysian. If this shop is owned by Malaysians they'll claim these food as Malaysian and give no credits to Indonesian.
Well aside from the fact that probably many SEA folks don't know about this store chain, it makes me feel kinda happy that lots of people, Westerners and Easterners alike, are enthusiastic for traditional Indonesian cakes and pastries. Here in Indonesia the Generation Z kids are becoming more engrossed with foreign foods and less familiar with these very delicious and affordable treats... I hope that this shop can be a sort of introduction for foreigners to the wonderful world of Indonesian cuisine, defeating the notion that we only eat heavy/spicy food every day :D
I see so back in the 70's she moved from indonesia, seems she makes the all favourite cakes from here, well for all singaporeans and fellow asians if you visit indonesia and wish to see all similar shops like this in google maps use the term 'toko kue jajanan pasar', every city has their own version, like in bandung here we have kartika sari, purimas, sari-sari (do visit sari sari), etc
Toko kue jajanan pasar is sort of my favourite place really, all kinds of food from mini savoury to mini sweet cakes, klepon, bugis, lapis legit, lapis malang , bolu ubi ungu, talam, chiffon pandan, kue clorot etc are sold, and also nasi bakar, nasi rames, nasi begana, bihun goreng all in small packages, and all the kripiks (chips) kripik tempe, kripik talas, etc so if i wanted a colourfull breakfast meaning not sure whether i wanted a sweet or savoury theme, and just wish for tiny portions i just go to theese kind if stores (open from 6am to 7 pm) , now since im mentioning this i suddenly want to go to sari sari 😁
Well, Bengawan Solo is actually a famous river in Indonesia with a legendary song written about it long before this cake shop ever founded. But I'm happy for the name getting famous one way or another.. It seems that the shop specially sells cakes that are famous here in Indonesia.
Guys, come on, you come to Indonesia and it will be too easy to find those kind of so-called legendary cakes even in small shops in traditional markets. But wait, about the freshness and quality of its ingredients, i think Bengawan Solo has its own level.

She was from Indonesia, borned in Indonesia, i believe she made it from d traditional pastry or snack of Indonesia when she was younger before she came to Singapore
So yeah, if u wanna taste it with cheaper price, various traditional pastry n maybe more delicious, come to Indonesia. Do not forget to taste our local fruits too :)
Come to indonesia, they're taste better and much cheaper.
As an Indonesia, I was proud and happy that with her business, people in Singapore will know Indonesia traditional street food and she still use bengawan solo as her brand name
Her business won’t survive in Indonesia lol. Lots of similar products that is a lot cheaper but superior in taste.
U never know dude, maybe ur base asumption bcos u never try same dish with premnium ingredients
There's a lot of 'food place' in indonesia that able to acquire a lot of market only because of the hype. So you never know.
@@bobbyhartanto6827 my mom make cookies & cake from premium (or i think its the best available in market) materials, i could say he is right
@@bobbyhartanto6827 i have. Tbh its above average, but doesnt justify the price tag. If you tried a standard priced lapis legit for example around 10-20 dollars it is superior in taste compated to the 65 dollar bengawan solo price.
That being said there are places in Indonesia that will charge from 300 dollar upwards for a the finest quality lapis legit.
they actually open one in Soekarno airport, I was like huh selling kueh lapis from Singapore in Indonesian airport
It's not claimed smh, just look at 2:20 why my fellow indonesian always make a big fuss without watching full vid
yah. i even hesitate to look into the comment section knowing there will be that kind of comment.

@Loli4lyf yup
@ara march you misread everything. Please read and try understand the meaning before attacking someone

For those who ask: bengawan solo is a river's name in Java, Indonesia. The name is used because the shop is selling mainly indonesian recipes traditional local snacks.
Although the brand is famous and located in Singapore apparently (I have no idea since those cakes I eat almost everyday growing up, surely they're selling it overpriced there. Though it's fair considering the rent and everything).
“Bengawan Solo river of love behold...” 🎵🎵🎵
It should be *how bengawan solo conquered Singapore*
Kue (indonesian) = cake
Lapis = slice
Bengawan solo = River in solo (city)
Solo = Our presiden(jokowi) came from (born)
In here (indonesia) there's a name coffe shop "bengawan solo" too, competitor "starbucks" and "jco"
Thanks for introduce Bengawan solo in this video :)
Its originaly from Indonesia. Right or I'm dumb bc I didn't know bengawas solo was in Singapore.
Lapis is not slice, lapis is layer.
And kue is from 糕 gao(chinese) from hokkien dialect "kwe"
who ever says overprice never went overseas... different country different price different salary different currency different raw material cost thats all about
Conquered south east Asia? Never heard of it until now
It's great that they put all SEA cuisine' culture in there. If they have a better tatse than original I would gladly adjust our recipe to improve it.
thats all is indonesian "jajanan pasar" , tradisional cake we can find every morning in the local market specially in jawa island
I bet these Chinese stole our idea before fleeing from Indonesia 😆
All the foods are literally come from Indonesia, I eat those kind of food a lot especially kue lapis (i am from indonesia, not being overproud, just for ur information)
''not being overproud''
AxLz07, Kueh lapis is not actually Indonesian, it is Dutch! Spekoek. Something to learn for you!
@@rothschildianum it's "Dutch East Indie" not "Dutch"
@@ferrykurniawan1919 Let's think this way, Indonesian civilization did not have baking thing. They might steam something like other typical Indonesian desserts. Therefore, only European civilization that bakes for example baking bread, cookies. Kueh Lapis is totally baked, therefore, we know it is not originally from Indonesian's civilization.
@@rothschildianum No! Baking bread was invented by Egyptian not Dutch or European. Is kue lapis an Egyptian thing now?
Well I never said it was originally from Indonesia. My point is it was invented in Dutch East India not in Dutch or in Europe.
Taste is way too PERFECT! Bengawan Solo is basically an Indonesian reguler snacks, you can find it at a local open market in Indonesia. But man oh man, Indonesian snacks is so YUMMY 🍴🥮🍰🍧🧁🧈🍡😋😋🤤
For those who's wondering about the name, it come from an Indonesian song
And yet, even in Indonesia it self. I never heard of Bengawan Solo Cake Shop. LOL🤣🤣
Heard of the song when I was young. Very nice song.
And the song came of from a name the longest river in java Indonesia
I'm Indonesian, never been to Bengawan Solo (the shop), but I know the taste of everything shown in the video. It's all traditional cake, never know it was popular in Singapore.
I never heard about this in Indonesia. However, if it about a river on middle of Java island then I know that 🤣🤣
It’s a premium brand in singapore. It’s basically an Indonesian street dessert but with high quality food check
Gua tahunya restoran bengawan solo restoran masakan Jawa wkwkwk
The lady has such a sweet smile. The way she greets her customers is commendable. Well done!
Bengawan solo place is in Indonesia.
But I never heard this brand of traditional cake in Indonesia , Singapore or all South east Asia country.

@@vaniajuliana3155 I'm not sure. Many time go to Singapore . I never seen it. Even in china town . Bugis or AMK area.
Bengawan Solo product is NOT Singapore heritage and culture as the founder son put it, the treats are all PURE Indonesian!
Well, does this brand also cause debates in Chinese social media?
I guess it sparked debate all over chinese social media

What i know about bengawan solo is name one of the river in java..😂😂😂
When the first time ever travel to singapore i bought bengawan solo moon cake at changi airport as a gift for my friend. And he said.."you said you're going to singapore." Lol. But i can say bengawan solo make high quality and delicious cakes and cookies.
Indonesian pastry mom conquers singaporean market with Indonesian recipe... it proves how awesome is indonesian foods. thank you Liew Family. I wish I can move to UK to sell rujak uleg and soto medan. Wml gaes

Its really touching when see people who nake something with all of their heart, not only to get money, but to fulfill their desire to make something become the best
Thanks for introducing Indonesia through the cake
The son said it's a "Singapore heritage" excuse me
I know, right?
Hongkong ppls always bring this cake when travel to Singapore , pandan siffon cake very smooth
Yeah, senang bisa sama2 merasakan jadi keluarga besar benua Asia.
I love this so much when i was in Singapore❤
You can found this as street food in Indonesia 😂
same with cambodia and the rest of southeast asia tbh... also never heard of the shop and im half cambodian lol
The difference is the quality. Also the packaging and presentation are modern and attract many people.
Why are my fellow maritime south east Asians so petty? It doesn't matter if the cakes are from Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore as long as they are delicious! As someone who has lived in these three countries let me tell you that we're more similar to each other than you think.
Yeah, let's keep it that way.
I just never heard of this brand before. We Indonesians usually buy all of these snacks brandless, ie by street vendors.
wow, every indo/malay foods labeled as 'singapore'.
Can't help it if Singapore, the smallest nation in South East Asia, and among the smallest in the world, has a larger impact on the world than most of her neighbours.
Because they have money, that's why. Unlike their neighbours, still bickering about politics and stuffs that doesn't matter.
Singapore actually are more Malay environments compare to Malaysia.
@@zulwabule u mean malay race? Owh that race who are lazy and claimed all the stuffs from China?
@@adhyharris7478 do you mean hongkong?
the title confused me a bit as first time i read it. but actually, after watch it, it's not about claiming, but the content is telling about how a person moved to singapore from indonesia a while ago, try to make INDONESIA'S CAKE and sell it, and respectly it now generously knowing. Very nice, as the world may know Indonesia is a big country with a rich culture, and these culture is mixed with a very delicious traditional cake.
For those people who dont know Bengawan Solo is a name of a river in indonesia and theres also a song for it
I wonder why there are so many negative comments about this video.
Bengawan is a river in Central Java
Nama doang dari jateng, tapi makanannya tetep dari Temasek.
@@momon4868 Begitu ya?

"Bengawan" literally means "river" in Javanese (in high register, the low register version is "kali"). Bengawan Solo refers to a specific river in Central Java.
Bengawan Solo is a popular song from Indonesia. The shop's name is a tribute to her native land.
Im malaysian and i never heard of it😂
In east java, we named them Jajan Pasar 😅
To be fair Bengawan Solo is only well known in Singapore. I actually love their kueh and cakes. Expensive but quality ingredients
Just go to indonesia, then go to local villages in java. Ask locals for "kondangan" or "tahlilan" ceremony if any, you'll get those cake for free.. 😁
But you have to give 'tip' for the bride 😂

And if bold enough, consume them, then find a toilet to spend the day AND night in/with as you'll most likely need that.
Bengawan solo was international? I never knew LOL
Well, Bengawan Solo is actually a famous river in Indonesia with a legendary song written about it long before this cake shop ever founded. But I'm happy for the name getting famous one way or another.. It seems that the shop specially sells cakes that are famous here in Indonesia.
I’ve never heard that one here in the Philippines. Actually there are 11 countries in South East Asia not just Singapore
They are selling Indonesian kueh, not Singaporean and as an Indonesian I have to applaud their branding success story.
Guys this is a part of promotion
Claimed it so popular in SEA lol

I don't know about the SEA, but I am happy for their success. Love from Indonesia.
