  • Welcome back to Mega-Depth!
    ---
    In this video, I wanted to walk you through the Boss Katana Air and the app that allows you to really access the versatility the amp offers.
    ---
    This is not a review; in that, I didn't go through all details of the product. Rather, I demoed what the app itself offers, what some of the options are, and how you can quickly adjust settings to find what you like.
    ---
    The sounds from the amp were captured with a Shure SM7B and no editing was done to the amp sound.
    ---
    I'm still learning on how to do demos. So, please share your feedback and let me know what you think of the Boss Katana Air!

    Thank you for your honest review. I was considering possibly purchasing one of these. I think I’m gonna wait for the Yamaha THR30II.

    Great video, man! Once you change the specs of the delay or drive by the app, for example, and save the new specs in the memory, do you need to use the App to access the new configuration or is just turn the amp on?
    And I’d like to know about the crunch modes of the Thr. Did you feel they are weaker than the Katana?

    I have a THR carrying case, and it fits just fine, even the handle fits. Katana air is a bit smaller, but not enough to worry about. Put the wireless in end pocket.
    Oh, and the wireless: there is a small pin near jack, which needs to be pushed in to turn it on. I just had to adjust the nut on my output jack as the nut was too far back from end to turn unit on. Also (may just be my problem) if getting some noise when playing, turn off blue tooth switch on amp. It seems to help

    Hi, nice video, I haven't figured out how to actually save a setting in a decent manner. IMHO the app needs improvement.

    Thanks for the video! I got one because it seemed like a great idea. In actual practice, I’m torn between using it as a simple clean practice amp or returning it as defective. Or the 3rd option: smashing it to bits with a sledgehammer! I cannot connect to the amp whatsoever with the bluetooth. It worked once, but not since. Luckily, I found a nice clean sound with a little reverb/delay. The transmitter is crap! It acts like it doesn’t charge half the time. It doesn’t work at all on some guitars! I end up using a Carvin wireless transmitter with the amp just to get it to work. Kind of defeats the purpose of this amp. I also had the same problem you did with using batteries. Went through 2 sets, and just gave up on them. Apparently, it drains the batteries while it is off??? I didn’t get an hour of use out of 2 sets of batteries. It seems like a good idea, but poorly executed! It’s a shame, because I do like the limited sounds I get from it. I love the size. The transmitter works great (when it works at all). It could be a perfect little practice amp if it actually did what it is supposed to. As is, it’s just a shame! And way overpriced for what you end up getting. I’ll keep a lookout for future videos on this subject. I always keep operator error in mind. I could always learn something new!

      Thanks so much for the comment, Jay! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has encountered the battery issue. Really don't get why it drains the battery when not in use. That wasn't an issue with the Yamaha THR. I'm disappointed about that myself. I, luckily, never had a problem with the transmitter. Having said that, I have read a lot about other people having issues with it. You are definitely not the only one. I also heard of people having bluetooth connection issues. I'm lucky that those never happened to me. It still hasn't happened since I shot this video. It's a shame the amp has some of these issues. I think it sounds great when some things are tweaked - but for an amp that is not cheap for its market, it's natural for players to expect a little better. Thanks again for watching!

    Regarding battery issue - do you leave the amp on standby (orange light on the power button)? I usually switched it off completely (push and hold the power button for a few seconds) and haven't had the battery drainage problem so far.

    Hi
    I just bought this amp and I really like it. The disappointment is that the transmitter don’t fit my guitar. Is there any way around this you can advise please? I was thinking was some 1/4 jack male to female which can fit in the guitar as extension and input the wireless there, but not sure if it would work?

    This was the best review on the the Katana Air, it sounds good , what I like most is being able to just pick up the guitar and play with the motion transmitter and control everything on my phone from the couch , I know the Yamaha THR tones are probably better ,have you reviewed the Positive Grid Spark 40 ? do you still have and use this ?

    • @megadepth5444
      @megadepth5444  3 роки тому +2

      sorry for the late response. I have since sold the katana air. I currently have both the positive grid spark and the Yamaha thr ii. it's not that I didn't like the katana air - I did - but since my main purpose is practice, I found that I could get to a better tone quicker with those two compared to the Katana. I was tweaking way too much and I have other modelers for that. Spark, in particular, has adopted the "less is more" approach, so it doesn't give you as much flexibility, but if you use the tones in the cloud, you can access a lot of great stuff very quickly. Obviously, what I just said is highly subjective and others will disagree, but that was my experience. The Yamaha THR II, imo, is the best practice amp in the market; if I had to get one, I'd go for that, it's more organic sounding than both the Spark and Katana if that makes sense.

    For me it's a perfect amp Bluetooth not a problem wireless works every time. I haven't touched the amp since I took it out of box.
    The range of sounds is amazing with 4 effects usable at any one time.
    It's so good I've packed up my hughes and kettner vox etc big valve amps just don't need them.
    If I want to go loud or use as a great gigging head I just plug in 2 frfr speakers and get immense stereo sounds .
    Only thing I want them to update is seperate out the booster menu from mod and allow the booster to go in front or behind mod. If they do that it's the only amp I need.
    I don't play metal but astounded that I can get such a natural crunch chugging sound from a digital amp I can get the billy bragg fender sound which amazes me from an amp like this.
    It's a shame others have had troubles

      Thanks for watching and commenting, Kevin. I'm glad this amp is working out so well for you. I also haven't had a bluetooth issue. This past month, I've been playing it daily and still no issues... It's a shame this isn't everybody's experience. I like the sound I get from the amp too - but for high gain, I think I liked my old Yamaha better. But, like you said, the range of tones you can get with this is quite awesome. For a small amp, that's nothing to ignore.

      Kevin C where do u plug in the 2frfr speakers?I didn’t realise you could do that.

    • @kevin285
      @kevin285 4 роки тому

      Just go out from headphone rec out to a powered frfr speaker like a headrush or any make -it just gives a massive sounding katana. Its just a jack to xlr cable needed. If you use one it will be mono but if you use a stereo jack that outs to 2 xlr plugs can run true out stereo

    • @Subilon

      Kevin C would a keyboard amp be ok do u think?

    • @kevin285
      @kevin285 4 роки тому

      Hi
      if it is a powered speaker and has an input like xlr or jack it would work- ive outputted mine to a tv sounbar.
      But will depend on speaker voicing on whether it will give you the sound you want. The guitar ones although sypposed to be flat they are tweeked to make guitar sound good.

    Just bought this amp and can't figure out how to connect the Bluetooth in order to play music through its speakers. Like from my phone or tablet. The Katana Air app worked fine though.

    You'd need to take out all batteries, if a bettery is making contact it is still releasing energy. Thought this was common knowledge 🤔

    I had issues with buzzing and crackling with mine but i figured out its because i had the amp on my desk next to my IMac, Airport, Modem , Speakers ... so it was all due to interference.. moved it away from the computer and everything is great i just control everything via the app

    • @etheriusmoon1809
      @etheriusmoon1809 2 роки тому

      Hm me too but I have mine on the floor. I then thought it was the screws on the handles bc one of them the threading had ripped so I put new screws on it. It somewhat fixed the buzzing. I did buy it used, it came filthy with soup stuck on the speaker. I did come with two transmitters so that's cool lol. I already opened it up and everything seems to be fine. I'll have to play it somewhere else where there's little to no interference to see if that might also be a problem.

    Have you ever figured out the battery issue? I just got this and am already replacing the batteries for the 3rd time in the first week lol.... I turn it off but still drains the batteries! Thanks.

    • @megadepth5444
      @megadepth5444  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately I haven't figured out the issue. It just keeps happening. I remove one of the batteries when I'm done playing and put it back when I'm about to play again. That at least lets me use the batteries much longer. But sometimes, I just give up and plug it in which is a bummer because it defeats the purpose of buying a wireless practice amp.

    At least in my experience the brown amp sounds ugly no matter if I tweak boost/overdrive/distortion or various EQ. I get nice tones only under a very limited range of setups (crunch + overdrive + headphones). I cannot understand how other ppl get (or claim to get) decent tones only using the knobs. I am heading towards return. Megadepth I am experienced metal player, but ... amateur how can I get get awesome modern metal and djent tones at low volumes?

    nice demo, just wanted to mention something about the batteries, i think they have a great product but really need to change that misleading info, rechargeable batteries will never have as much millamps as a normal energizer or duracell AA battery so i dont understand why they say rechargeable will last more than regular.
