I had similar results out my Gen II 223. I took the stock off and found some of the Splatter Paint on the V-Block. I cleaned it off and then cleaned up the barrel channel really good. Adjusted the trigger down to 3 pounds and made sure the stock was torqued. Then took off the scope rail, cleaned the mounting surface and screws/ holes and applied some blue loctight. Recounted the scope and re-torqued the mounts. Cleaned barrel reallyfood. Now its shootings much better. It just loves Honardy 75 gr BTHP and Black 62gr. Both are averaging around .65 to .80. It'll even shoot Tula 75gr right at 1.5. I have a Mcarbo trigger spring, just waiting to install it.
I have the exact rifle. I installed the Timney trigger and reduced the trigger pull to just shy of 2 lbs tigger pull. and it tighten up. my groups.some. the Timney trigger breaks like ice, with zero travel and creep. well worth the extra money. I loaded up some lapua brass with 65 gr Sierra gamekings, and Nosler 60 gr partition bullets with Remington 7 1/2 primers and benchmark powder. Sierra 65 gr were 3/4 inch group, and the Nosler partition were 1 1/2 inch. for Florida hunting it covers all bases. I have taken some real nice bucks with the Sierra 65 gr bullet with the 223 rem.
A S&W223 MADE IN JAPAN 20 YEARS AGO 1-8 TWIST, 26 BRL FIRES MOST UNDER OLDER 3X9 LEUPOLD, 62 AND UNDER 1" GROUPS. SO NO THANKS TO THAT RIFLE. I UNDERSTAND MAY TOGHTEN UP AFTER 100 ROUNDS BUT BACK THEN MY OUT OF BOX WAS ALREADY 1".
Just got my gen2 today in 6.5grendel exactly like yours. Groups are sub par 1.5in to 2in. Last round hold open is junk. I load an empty case first then live rounds on top. Im tearing it down to the basics, re torque stock, scope base with locktite. Future thing will be budget chasis and steel 20moa base. I think its got .75moa in, just needs more break in and better fit and finish. Its a budget deer/hog gun. My boy will slay with it😂😂😂
Not sure about gen 2, but i know for a fact that the stock on the gen one with a bipod will destroy accuracy tests. Flimsy material puts pressure on the barrel.
Its fascinating to me, seeing videos like this as well as comments below. I have this same exact model, and on my second time out with it having only shot a couple types of factory ammo, I was grouping 1 MOA or less with a little 3-9x40 at 100 yards. And I haven't been able to touch a range in years. I do understand that "budget" rifles such as this can have slightly varying build quality, such as the gentleman below who had to strip his down and clean up the mounting points. I guess Ill just be happy mine shoots lights-out right out of the box. Perhaps people need to look at how well their scopes are mounted, as well as how they can improve their own shooting fundamentals.
@@alanfarley3888 update I did buy a Ruger american gen 2 223 with the 20" barrel and have been having trouble finding a load it likes. I did some hand loads with 75 gn. Hornady match bullets and can't get anything under 1 in with a 5 shot group @ 100 yards.
@@MightyBobo Thanks for the info Sir. I hear Sig match ammo shoots sub moa 3/4" groups as well. I'm working on a lader hand loads using 77 gr sierra matchking bullets to find what powder and weight works best with this rifle. Im using CFE 233 and VARGET powder. I will report back my findings.
Got this same gun in 223 and have tried 6 different store bought boxes through it. So far Hornady Frontier FR140 55 grain has shot best for me at slightly less than 1 MOA. I had similar results as the video with PMC. I'm still doing some field work though to see if I can improve on that. My friend has the Gen2 in .204 and it's a tack driver.
interesting. I have a 6.5cm and saw a 308 in the gun shop. neither had the set screw nor the spring for the trigger adjust. they are just empty. both were 3.5# pull out of the box. Don't know if other calibers come with the spring and screw.
I mean.. factory budget rifles take a little more to be that good.. more break in, more ammo types tried before finding “the one”.. I have a savage axis 2 in 6.5 Creedmoor that was shooting over 1-1.5 inch groups with a few types of ammo and I was starting to regret my purchase.. until I found a relatively cheap ammo type that shoots 0.3-0.5 inch 5 shot groups ON AVERAGE.. just takes more effort but far from a waste of money!!
I bought this gun several weeks ago and it took several trips to the range to determine the best ammo it likes. For me, the 62 grain Federal FMJ gave me the best groups followed by 64 grain. This is not the most accurate rifle Ruger has turned out. Am disappointed in Ruger’s performance and accuracy with this rifle.
I’ll try that one out. I feel like both me and the rifle can do better than the groups I got on camera. Shooting it some more I’m getting MOA with match ammo so I’m happy.
Theyre supposed to be only giving a 20inch bbl on standard long actions and magnums. Why the hell would you want a .270 that performs like a 6.8spc. I hate this short barrel crap. Ot otherwise would be ok.
Because people are putting suppressors on them and don't want to walk around with a 30+" barrel setup. Buy what you like, and don't worry about everyone else.
note to self, don't recommend this rifle to friends looking for a 223. Those groups were average. the other cal's of gen 2 rugers seem to be shooting better.
I bought the same rifle. Ran just about every type of match ammo known to man and grouped like shit. I ended up sending it back to ruger for repairs and it still shoots like a total dumpster fire. I'm done with ruger!

That’s the second review I’ve seen with really average groups
They are really average shooters, just slinging shots.
My Gen 2 Grendel is printing .48” at 100, 5 shots with my 107 smk loads

Stiff bolt after the shot is because it's a cock on open design so it's going to be stiffer than on close.
Just ordered one! Thanks for the review!

How far were you shooting?
My ruger mpr proof ar has better groups at 200 yards with Winchester target 55 grain
100 yards. I’ll try some out
Let's be honest, if a rifle isnt grouping 1/2 inch at 100 yards, it's a waste of your money

I agree. I’d like to see them in a 24 inch.
I seen alot of 20inch 6.5prc's😂 They just bought a gun that shoots boutique creedmoor ammo😂 and getting needmoor velocity

Is that the 46909 model number.
Yes it is
Do you know if 556 can shoot out of it. I think I heard it's not recommended
No. Chambered for .223 only. 5.56 can cause pressure issues.
The original ruger american was chambered in .223 wylde. Is the new one not? @@NTXoutdoors

my ruger american 556 gets sub MOA with almost everything i put through it
Can it handle 5.56?
This one is chambered only for .223. The ranch model is 5.56/.223
If it groups cheap pmc 55 grain then I’m in lol
How far is the target??
100 yards
Gun looks great, shoots like shit. Did I hear some ricochets?
"OK" is really not OK with a weapon. It should be "real darn good".
What size scope and height rings are you running?
Leupold 4-12x40. Low rings
Need to work on that trigger pull.

I would have checked scope mounts first before I blamed the rifle. Most times it's the loose nut behind the trigger that's the problem.
Not impressive at all
Hi this gun just came to us in Saudi Arabia for 2300$ is it worth that ?
To get better accuracy you have to have your own load of ammo not factory ammo 🤦♂️
That's a no for me 👎
