The three pioneers of Rock & Roll: Buddy, Ritchie & JP "The Big Bopper" died on February 2, 1959 (fifty years now). The widowed bride was JP's. She was pregnant when he died. Thanks Don for a fitting tribute. Thanks MacGarVision for posting this wonderful video.
I was in the first grade when this song came out (1971). I remember adults saying that this song is not about the musicians who died in the plan wreck. It was about McClains
It was written in 1971 in Don Mclean's album GrimbleGrumble. It is about three rock and roll idols who died in a plane crash in Iowa. The rock and roll stars were Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and JP Richardson also known as The Big Bopper.
No, you are correct, nakananteteng. The article in the paper started by talking about a bus trip they took a few days earlier. That confused me with my dates! They are missed.
Meant to say..."McLean's" sadness over how simple life once was in America, back in the 1950's. Before drugs took over the youth, crime sky rocketed, politicians became more corrupt and American values vanished....all contributing to the disappearance of a values based and prideful place this country once was, and most likely never will be again.
Is really interesting cause this song talks about janis joplin, the jester (bob dylan, elvis prestley. But the main is of course Buddy Holly who was Don's hero, so the day buddy died that was the day the music died, according to Don.
@tatethompson1234 Its true, if you compare this video from the 1972 video in the suggestions bar, this concert in this video was definitely in the 80's...
@atfatw Just about anyone will sound better when you can edit out any mistakes, do retakes, and make sure balance is perfect. His voice I personally think sounds fantastic in this recording.
Really, now? I didn't know that. I must have it confused with just heavy metal in general, then. Even then, it's probably just in my general area. Of course, in the 2+ years since I posted that comment (I'm 17 now), I've obtained a taste for a wider variety of music.

wat is the meaning of this song
i think this is the 80s not 70s
Neither. It was February 3rd, 1959
Don't try to analyze it just sing along.I've thought this was the greatest rock track ever laid down since the 70's.
