Mr. Skinner, you've been very gracious in posting answers to my comments & questions. Thank you! 3 times a charm... 😁. I noticed at the beginning of this video where you give us a look at the 3 lures in discussion that the top lure's single tail hook is facing down. Is that standard practice? I've replaced a couple treble hooks with singles but have placed them pointing up. Hmmm... Not sure if that's good or not. The blues I've caught have been on the middle treble.
John i love your videos. Youre always welcome to fish up north here in Boston with the new england kayak fishing guys. You should come up to our big tourney in aug every year.
Great video as ever. I love these kind of plug lures: I have many vintage ones, does someone still make them. I make my own from broom handles and stuff, but it'd be nice to know there are new ones available. Many thanks. Raymondo
Just finished reading this chapter in Striper Pursuit, such an amazing book so far. What are your thoughts utilizing metal lip swimmers in the dark, dusk, or dawn?
Have ya ever seen jack Frechs beluga its a metal lip that the lip can rotate up and down to get a far cast then you start your retrieve and it digs in to a normal metal lip action
would you say that in the conditions in which you would throw a metal lip you could just throw a bomber instead? Bombers are way cheaper and cast better and they ride almost as high on the surface
+Kent Napp You can toss anything, important thing is you get it in front of the fish and they see it, presentation and colour in that order. Cool thing with these you can bend the eye up or down to make em swim deeper or shallower. Bombers and other minnows are fixed
+Kent Napp A 6-inch metal lip is much different than a 6-inch Bomber. They swim differently and have a much different profile. Two distinct tools entirely for me.
+John Skinner Fishing One more question John, if the large adult bunker are the predominant bait fish, do you throw even larger metal lips than the 6in or just a 7in talkin popper ?
Thanks for the video and I think your books great. Do you ever remove the middle hook on a three-hook plug? Do you remove the barbs to make release easier?
Hi John, I would like to know what are your thoughts on the sebile magic swimmer and what would it be good for, blues or strippers and how would it be used best.
Love the videos I bought striper persuit off Amazon and the book has changed my outlook on fishing . I inherited some old school danny Gibbs with 4/0 open eye hooks. would you replace with split rings and 3/0s ? I heard split rings can cause potential tangles
+Henry oh: hey henry, I'm not writing to promote John Skinner's material but I strongly suggest you to get one of his books. From my personal experience it has helped me not only land more fish but understand how surf fishing works, as far as what lures to use under what conditions your fishing on, and much more. there you will find answers for questions you don't even have now. His book are extremely detailed. They will definitely be your guide to surf fishing. John Skinner many thanks for sharing your knowledge. tight lines!
I've had a couple Tsunami metal lips crack on me and turn in to sinkers. Have you had that experience yet? I prefer RM Smith, Gibbs and Mike's Custom myself.
Hi John, I noticed that you didn't have to cast far for swimming lip plugs. How come didn't you cast them far? Just curious because I always have to cast far out.
Great question. The fish were tight to the beach and mostly along the beach lip in this video. That was a good scenario for metal lips, which don't cast very well.
John, I can see fish breaking water in the distance during the Tsunami plug part of the video. Is that baitfish or bass, or both causing those disturbances?
I know you've said in the past that lure colors are designed to catch fisherman not fish, but do you have any thoughts on color selection for metal lips?
9 років тому
Those baits look like an old beat up thing I have hung up somewhere in my shed....does the lip cause the bait to dive much, or is it more for action?
"Are there a lot of them out here?" Skinner "ah, not really" Then he goes and catches 50 more :) ALWAYS keep your spots and catches a secret: it's the surf fishing way.
Hi. First off, great videos. Lots of interesting tidbits and very informative. May I suggest one change to the channel format, however? It is difficult for the more novice angler to navigate all the information you present here since you categorize each video by type of life used. How about recategorizing or maybe just renaming videos based on type of beach, weather condition, or season? I think it would be much easier to find the information we are looking for that way.
Sometimes I really tire of these Skinner videos, because he fishes where there are a lot of fish. Take that detail out of the equation and it would be boring. I value JSs advice, But want to see him work in waters bereft of fish. My state? NJ.
Hi John, I would like to know what are your thoughts on the sebile magic swimmer and what would it be good for, blues or strippers and how would it be used best.

Thank you John. Absolutely great job explaining and describing the uses and techniques for Metal Lips
Past and present, one thing about John, when he's on the beach odds are there's no one around him. Gotta love it.
Love the video and the narration. Very serene and very informative! Tight lines, John!

I place them down so they act as keels, and also because fish strike from below.

They are all still made.
Just finished reading this chapter in Striper Pursuit, such an amazing book so far. What are your thoughts utilizing metal lip swimmers in the dark, dusk, or dawn?
+Seaside Striper Works on all three.

How late into December do you fish?
Have ya ever seen jack Frechs beluga its a metal lip that the lip can rotate up and down to get a far cast then you start your retrieve and it digs in to a normal metal lip action
would you say that in the conditions in which you would throw a metal lip you could just throw a bomber instead? Bombers are way cheaper and cast better and they ride almost as high on the surface
+Kent Napp My best guess is you can, if they have a mouth and its in front of them they are gonna eat it!

When was this and how would you rate your overall experience this fall?
Thanks for the video and I think your books great. Do you ever remove the middle hook on a three-hook plug? Do you remove the barbs to make release easier?
Always was one of my favorite surf lures but never got it to consistently produce on the kayak, hard to get the right action fishing in your lap.
Hi John, I would like to know what are your thoughts on the sebile magic swimmer and what would it be good for, blues or strippers and how would it be used best.
just bought your book and love your videosn John what retail rod would you compare best to your custom 9ft rod you use in alot of your videos? thx!
Hey john I often surf cast at smiths point outer beach and was wondering if u could give a few tips I really struggle and want to get in to some fish

+Squirly Bringer I will use wooden lures around jettys, sand your safe with anything
+Squirly Bringer No! I'd be trying to sent those back. The Tsunami people will want to know. I've abused their wood poppers on bluefish without issue.
+John Skinner Fishing I'll let them know ASAP. It wasn't knocked against anything, it seemed to be a defect in the epoxy coating.
How are the round nose metal lips different from these flat nose plugs action-wise? Any tips? Thanks!
+bigmahi22 Both great plugs.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing they probably don't cast well in general
how do you know what bait is there? I never see bait
John, I can see fish breaking water in the distance during the Tsunami plug part of the video. Is that baitfish or bass, or both causing those disturbances?
Thank you for all the info. On stripebass fishing in the self ,great videos
John would the info your book apply to fishing in East Cost Florida?
I know you've said in the past that lure colors are designed to catch fisherman not fish, but do you have any thoughts on color selection for metal lips?
Those baits look like an old beat up thing I have hung up somewhere in my shed....does the lip cause the bait to dive much, or is it more for action?
I know its been 4 years..... The answer is both.
do you have to remove the split ring if you use a clip
+Evan Warwick yea its just a nuisance if you keep it on. plus its one less joint you have to worry about.
+Evan Warwick I found You may get more action if you leave it on but a safety precaution for sure as its a weak point
+Evan Warwick I do.
Hey john would this lure be as productive in the sound when the peanuts are around?
+nick giustra Yes.
What's lure action difference between tsunami round nose and flat nose metal lip?
Is this good to use on the sound in long island? Can you catch black bass or porgies from the surf with these?
+neostefanides these are good for stripers. Not good for porgies or black sea bass.
Ever tried the BCM Minnow metal lip?
what size and type of treble hooks do you use?
how do the rounded nose differ from the flat nose?
Any experience with the 5" tsunami?
What reel do you use
Where do u go to buy your tsunami products
+Zander Thurlo check ebay for deals
+Zander Thurlo J&H Oakdale Long Island, and they have a website.
Was this the ocean side of the island?
+DrBaddVibes correct.
Hi, how far can you cast with these plugs. Thanks
+Kev Z. I'm not good with distance estimating. Not as far as a Bomber. About as far as an unloaded 7-inch RedFin.
What waders did you have on in this video?
+Daniel C Surfcasting LL Bean bootfoot emerger II
+John Skinner Fishing Thanks so much great Video!
What editing software do you use for your videos?
where can i get your surf lures ?
Do you ever Blackfish?
god stuff as always!
"Are there a lot of them out here?" Skinner "ah, not really"
Then he goes and catches 50 more :)
ALWAYS keep your spots and catches a secret: it's the surf fishing way.
I was wondering if you have trouble with the 2 trebles hooking each other
Yer hooks are too big

*type of lure used
Now is a dark metal lip better at night

They crushed fish on the NJ beaches this fall.
