Art Directing Procedural Content with Landscape Layer Painting (UE5)

  • Generating content procedurally doesn't have to mean giving up artistic control. Here I demo a technique for using landscape paint layers to pass data to PCG to control scale, density and even material data (like color or wind strength) of grass.

    Nice find ! I'm curious about the cost of additional Layer Info . I assume it doesnt make the Pixel Shader cost of the landscape more expensive since its not related to the texture of the landscape itself depsite being in its material ?

      Right, there is no added cost in the landscape material because the weights are unused for shading. However, there will be a memory cost of having the extra floats in the layer data, as well as in the instances themselves. I assume it's 8 bits per vertex on the landscape, and another 8 bits per instance on screen.

    Hello, your videos are professional level and better than many popular channels. I would like your channel to improve, but I wish you would spend some time on the appearance and cover of the video. And upload one video a week regularly. Anyway, keep going. Nothing detracts from the value of your work, but I think your videos deserve much more attention.

      Thanks, I appreciate that! I definitely recognize that I could do a lot more to polish the videos, but it's been quite difficult to find the time. However, I'm getting quite close to reaching partner status, and being able to monetize the channel may help to justify setting aside more time in the future.
