In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga (Baba Jaga) is a supernatural being (or one of the three sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed and/or menacing-looking woman. In folklore, Baba Yaga usually flies on a broom wielding a pestle and lives deep in the woods in a hut, usually described as standing on crow's feet. Baba Yaga can help or hinder those who meet or seek her, and can act as a mother. It also has associations with forest nature.

the Allegro (Allegro is polish equivalent of Amazon/Ebay) movies are just shorts made for fun, there's couple of them (Jaga, SMOK, Bazyliszek, TWARDOWSKY 1 &2). Core theme of the project is polish legends/folk tales in modern setting accompanied by new spins on polish music classics. Allegro also funded/produced music videos for those song covers. Jaga is accompanied ied by two:
    - Jaskółka uwięziona - Cover. Atanas Valkov&Georgina Tarasiuk. Legendy Polskie /watch?v=qdCmSt4798g (cover of Stan Borys - Jaskółka form 1974)
    - Kocham wolność - Cover. Matheo & Damian Ukeje. Legendy Polskie /watch?v=y1YbhC5spzE (cover of Chłopcy z Placu Broni - Kocham wolność from 1990)

Baba Jaga is first witch, the most powerfull in slavic legends.
She take power from Weles who is one of the main God of underground and magic powers for Slavic peple.
She wasnt definite bad or good....more neutral. But if you will not respect her she was vicious.
Boruta is one of the devils.
Ps. Jagusia is pet name to Jaga - Baba Jaga.

May I add Perun mentioned here and there was one of the most powerful gods from Slavic mythology, someone very similar to Zeus, also the god of thunders, that fought against the being representing Chaos - Żmij ( Serpent). his sacred tree was oak and we see here also Jaga was trying to plant the oak tree. Yaga was also the goddess , the forest protector known also as a guardian of "growing up, metamorphosis from a child to an adult; a witch. her legend has become popular especially by Grimm brothers who depictured her as evil being that killed children, only defeated by the protagonist of the stories.

    • @TomaszLee

Żmij was an animal incarnation of Veles, Perun's real opportunist. Interestingly, in Slavic mythology there was no unequivocal affiliation to good or evil. Both gods had good and bad qualities, and the ancient struggle between them is the cause of everything that happens. For example - Weles was responsible for cattle (symbol of wealth). When cattle got sick or died, they attributed Perun's actions, theoretically the good one.

To be honest, this is my favorite short video from Allegro (and my favorite song) :) Allegro is like Amazon, it's a pity that they stopped 6 years ago to make some great short videos and didn't make something bigger, shown in cinemas... They could really create something great, on level of The Witcher games, staying in the Slavic theme but with a touch of modernity... Such a great loss on their part, although who knows... maybe if more people abroad are interested in these videos, they will finally decide to start this project? ;)

    • @AmiRa-wj9jt
      @AmiRa-wj9jt 9 місяців тому +4

To clarify. In our stories, just like in the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, there is no pure good and pure evil. Although Baba Yaga looks like an angel - she is as dangerous as Satan Boruta, even the child who was shown has no clear conscience. There are former gods (Perun) and characters from our myths in hell... in these short videos they suddenly (for some reason) manage to escape from confinement and spread terror in Poland nowadays ;).
The being who controls time (can stop it) is Boruta, not Jaga ;) Her skills are different.
Our cinema, only that in good quality, is always complicated and multi-threaded ;) that's why I recommend watching these videos a few times and everything will become clear to you ;). Ba, maybe you will even be interested in our Slavic mythology? ;) Unfortunately, we don't know much about it, the Vatican crusades erased a lot of information about our distant ancestors. One thing is certain, the Slavs worshiped forests, just like druids... that's why Jaga is so angry at people that they cut down her sacred grove and turned it into a housing estate ;). It's a very interesting approach to today's life... because if the Gods of our ancestors still exist somewhere... I think they would be very dissatisfied with us and would have many reasons to leave "hell" and bring their "order" ;).

I'm Polish and I'll try to explain it to you. The legend of Baba Yaga dates back to pre-Christian times when there were several different types of Gods and demons.
It is an element of most Slavic beliefs.
Slavs are inhabitants of Central and Eastern Europe. We come from one ethnic group, our languages are similar and we have common elements of culture before Christianization in the 9th - 11th century.
In the original legend, Baba Yaga lived in the forest and had a house on a chicken leg all made of candy, and a road made of candy led to her house. She kidnapped the lost in the wilderness. Generally in the Witcher game - "Lords of the Forest" - this would be the equivalent of Baba Yaga in Slavic mythology, the Germans have the same Baba Yaga as luring children and fattening them to eat them. Hänsel und Gretel in Poland we call it "Jaś i Małgosia".
Europe is a melting pot of cultures, I believe that Mr. Bagiński, who created the film The Cathedral in 2002, did a great job selling Polish culture.
We were here long before Christianity. The entire series is worth recommending.
Most Poles know these legends and I guess a lot of Czechs, Slovaks, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Lithuanians, Slovenes, Serbs...

"Boruta the Devil" is a character from Polish folklore, particularly associated with the Mazovian region. He is a mythical, demonic figure with complex and diverse attributes.
Here are some key points about Boruta the Devil:
Character and Appearance: Boruta the Devil is depicted as a powerful and malevolent demon with a human or semi-human, semi-animal appearance. He is often portrayed as a tall figure with fiery eyes and a horn on his head.
Ruler of Forests and Woods: Boruta is often linked to being the ruler or guardian of forests and woods. He is considered a protector of wildlife and wild creatures, but at the same time, he can be an unpredictable and dangerous keeper of these places.
Guardian of Traditions: In Polish folk tradition, Boruta was often believed to be the protector of rituals and customs related to agricultural life and nature. His presence was thought to safeguard the laws and traditions passed down through generations.
Complex Nature: The character of Boruta the Devil is not straightforward. In some stories, he is portrayed as a benefactor, rewarding people for their honesty and care for nature. In other tales, he is a fearsome and dreadful demon who punishes people for their sins and moral transgressions.
Mazovian Cultural Connection: Boruta the Devil holds particular significance in the culture of the Mazovian region of Poland. Stories about him have been passed down through generations, influencing local beliefs and traditions.
It's important to note that folklore and mythology, such as the character of Boruta the Devil, often have various versions and interpretations depending on the region and time. These stories contribute to the rich cultural heritage of Poland and have played a role in shaping the imagination and identity of its people.

    • @Diveyl
      @Diveyl 9 місяців тому +2

Boruta was also depicted as simpleton, a peasant or mundane among Devils.
Rokita on other hand was more associated with nobility, a higher Devil with his own code of honor and rules that he followed. And this is played here. He was also vengeful devil.

Yaga is, let's say, a master demon. Like everything in the original Slavic edition - it is impossible to say whether it was bad or good. A bit of an eco-terrorist, but with pure intentions. Messing with her is a very bad idea, which gives you an idea of what it was like to mess with characters higher up the hierarchy. :)

Baba Yaga is a witch, or rather a woman with knowledge. There is no such distinction in English. Slavic mythology has many powerful female demons. Most of them are neither good nor bad, they just are. They should not be upset ;) Perun is one of the most important Slavic gods - the ruler of thunder and the god of warriors. Behind him is Weles, the god of the underworld (of the dead). The oldest is Swaróg, the god of the sun, heavenly fire, divine blacksmith and creator of celestial bodies. Before we became Christians, we had a very colorful mythology ;). There is always an extra after the credits

The entire "Polish Legends" series is truly a great combination of very old Slavic and Polish legends with modernity and the present world. Today I made a comparison and checked the reaction of three different non-Polish people on UA-cam. They were the reaction of an Englishman, a Scotsman and now an American. And it's amazing how different the reception of this film is. Europeans understood the various symbols and comparisons in the film much better, because perhaps the characters from Polish legends have some references in their legends. What's more, the Englishman "was prepared" and had previously read who/what Baba Yaga was in Polish mythology. And Dar The Traveler simply approached this film like dozens of fantasy films

This is a story about (christian) hell and pre-christian gods, godesses and other slavic demons mentioned here. You can interpret the story as when the slavs turned into christianity, all their gods who they worshiped were captured by the christian devil and put in hell. Jaga apparently escaped and the devil wants to bring her back.

I am baffled at you keep saying "I don't know what she is". The whole vid was about her, introducing her in all the aspects. She is an old Slavic demon, imprisoned in Hell by the actual devils. Once pagan times were over, all pagan demons were banished, and real Hell took over. Hell, as you could see, works as a huge Corporation (here is just their small division, the Polish Hell). They despise the former, unprofessional order and take care of business on earth in their own, sophisticated way, keeping all those petty creatures/deities/semigods of the olden days in special prison-cells. Hell's operations are sanctioned, to some degree, by Heaven. But the devils always play a double game, and they try to use Yaga's prison break to their advantage. An agency on Earth, human organization called "The Iron Mountain," is the third side of the story: they fight all evil, be it old or new one. They were tipped by Rokita about Yaga's whereabouts, but failed to eliminate her. At the end of the fight Boruta, the Polish Division Director, intervened, and, playing on Yaga's nostalgia for the old times (with the help of the little devil Marysia), tricked Yaga into an unstoppable rage agains all human civilization (so that human souls would be tainted with hatred and violence, and fall to Hell).
This was all plain to see. Did you notice the English subtitles?
