About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I am vegan, and I'm like, "Ew animal meat," 😅 but I freaking love his channel. He is exactly how farmers should be. He gives me hope to animal welfare and proper farming. I may not take part in the consumption, but at least these animals aren't tormented before death and have a compassionate person caring for them properly.
I also own a lot of critters he does, too. Just they are "pets" on my property. I have learned so much about my farm fowl from him. I have so much respect for him as a farmer and caregiver of animals.

I think that your success is down to one major factor and that is you, Morgan Gold. Your business acumen, your thoughtful pursuit of your dream and most importantly your personality and ability to story tell. You have taken us along on your fascinating journey and have made us feel invested in your life and your success not to mention the lives of your animals. From the livestock guardian dogs to the weird chickens speaking for me I love them all. Thank you for the care you take in the every thing you do. Watching your videos is a joy

Great advice, Morgan.. one of the reason your channel was such a hit was because, you have a great talent for telling a good story. Also your compassion and caring nature.
Some of these Home stead channels take themselves to serious, while others try to make it a comedy. Some want to cry about everything and really need some metal help. You,on the other hand, mix it all together in a wonderful blend of your life! The honesty shows.
Thank you Morgan for being real.God bless you.

@@marleneclough3173 - Gold Shaw Farm is one of my favorite channels.
Another homestead channel I really like features a family with five children, The Hollar Homestead. Ben can design and make about any contraption he needs, and Meg is a marvel in the kitchen cooking and canning. They raise and butcher their meat - chicken, pork and now beef - in addition to maintaining a large-scale food garden and an orchard.
Fy Nyth is a channel that I find to be exceptionally informative about anything to do with homesteading, including being off grid. Ariel had a tiny home in the woods on a mountain in Wyoming for 7-8 years parked on land she rented by doing seasonal work for the owners. She married about two years ago. The couple bought several acres of flat land that has allowed them to have animals (chickens, then ducks plus dogs and cats) and start an orchard, in addition to continuing a large garden. They are living in the tiny house (moved from the woods) until they are ready to build a small home. However, building a greenhouse will probably take precedence over the small house.
Go to the Kris Harbour Natural Building channel if you want to watch a person who has designed and constructed buildings using different techniques (cob, earth bag, round lumber, mortise-and-tenon) that are practical, works of art and will last generations. Kris built his own wind turbine and hydroelectric power system, in addition to a solar system. In addition, Kris built a machinery to mill his own lumber. He is from England and has about 20 acres in Wales. Over time Kris has expanded his garden plus acquired chickens, geese and sheep.

Using social media to show how you're doing it is so helpful. Obviously most of the products in supermarkets do not come from operations like yours but it's great to see that it can work and that good folks are still making it work.

You're gonna regret those black locust. Very invasive. They send thick roots underground and pop up new trees all along it for hundreds of feet. You can't pull those out by hand and chopping them off doesn't stop them. And since you don't use wooden fence posts you don't need them.

This vlog is a must-see for all those contemplating taking up the farming/homesteading life. I think that many go into it with stars in their eyes. Then they discover how much work it is, and how much money it takes, to get started and keep going through the self-inflicted mistakes and the natural disasters we have no control over. It is nice that there are more channels now that seem more honest about the realities of this lifestyle. And as far as social media goes, the channels that are most successful have people or families at their core that folks want to get to know and follow. I am a pretty great gardener, but my personality and voice would not translate to a successful UA-cam Channel, that is just a reality. So I wouldn't discourage trying out social media, but so few actually make it in a big way, in a way that can finance some of the stuff you see online. It's great that it works for them, it is a gift they have that most of us don't have - most of us are never going to star in a movie or play in the NHL, either. Be realistic, have a plan, expect the unexpected, be willing to pivot - but don't stop dreaming. Even if only a part of it comes to fruition, that is something to hold on to and be proud of.

Your a very wise farmer at such an early stage of the game!! I remember when my aunt and uncle took over the family farm from our grandparents. First couple of years were rough.. I stayed 3.or 4 summers with them full time they had daughter my age we were a good team. But the 2nd year was the hardest. There was a drought. And then all those crazy grasshoppers! They would crop dust.and no joke they would literally fall out of the trees. And in one veggie garden when you went to pick tomatoes ...all you heard was the crunches of dead grasshoppers under your shoes!!! Lol. Yes folks there is a whole world of things morgan doesn't speak of that happens on the farm!! But there are so many things that show your hard work too quickly that you can see right off!! Morgan never 2nd guess your choices. They are not really mistakes when something positive no mater what' it is comes of your choices!! Keep up the good work !!!we love your videos!!!

I don't think this was a negative video at all! I think it's one of the most helpful videos you've made, along with the breakdown videos of costs and income. This is as positive as it gets!!!
This gives people a realistic view of what it takes to start a successful farm, marketing, to plan, to build a farm, avoid burnout, and to learn the market as you go, etc.
What could be more positive than that???😊
The health benefits of exercise, fresh air, health of the animals by multifarming, the health of the land, and so on are perhaps even more important in the long-term.
Gold-Shaw Farm's is coming along quite nicely. The improvements you've made are amazing! 👏 👏 👏
I remember chatting with you when all this was a dream, on 50 Ducks in a Hot Tub (Matt's channel), several years ago (has it been 7 or 8 years now? Time flies!)
Anyhow, I've been watching, and I don't chime in a lot, but the growth you've created on the farm is remarkable.
You've built an amazing farm that is beautiful!
It's awesome to see how far you, the farm, and the business have come.
God bless! I look forward to many more years of Gold-Shaw Farm on UA-cam!

Toby had a tick vectored disease last summer, and he pulled a detached engorged tick off of his bull a few weeks ago. He has them, and they are transmitting diseases at times, but I do not know how severe they are. He also upped his tick control for his dogs.
He could probably triple his summer chicken population with some meat birds that he lets free roam with the cattle, assuming some will be killed by predators, but he is opposed to using modern breeds that mature in 12 weeks. They would eat feed, and also a lot of insects including ticks. I would go with that, as they can also be a cash cow, with the cattle.

From what I understand as long as your doin your own due diligences, dogs are typically able to live completely fine after coming in contact with tics. Only 1/100 actually end up getting Lyme disease, and of those that do it mostly lays dormant and doesn’t effect their health.
I assume the same for cattle. For example our own dog has lived with Lyme for 4 years she’s 13 and the worst that she’s dealt with at her age is large fluid filled growths she has recently been getting.
      Hope that helps?

It is another challenge in itself when you choose to address your inner self. When we address those things like why we are having issues in an area of life, digging deep is also hard work. Striving to be the best person you can be, and understanding that no matter where you go or what you do will change that inner struggle until you work on yourself and acknowledge the fact that we could all benefit from Therapy.

Addressing the mental health aspect is much needed. Farming (any kind) is a stress filled worrisome endeavor. It effects the individual, the marriage, the kids & all family involved. That is alot of balls to juggle.

    Some valuable lessons well explained.
I'm highly biased toward burrows and surely missing some key downsides but they can make superb farm guardians and live off the land to a large degree.

Your videos came up on my feed this year and I didn't watch them, at first (stupid me!!). However, once I did, I was hooked. I get a lot of farm videos that come up. but most of them are kind of boring. Yours are not! I love the names you give your animals and my daughter (she is 47) loves the reference to Letter Kenny which I had no clue about. Keep up the intelligent dialog as to me, it is very refreshing!

Hey. Thanks for what you do. I’m in my 30s and going back to school for an agriculture production management degree and just wanted to let you know that you are part of my inspiration. I’ve had 3 years to experiment and practice on my parents 5 acres in the upper Midwest with a goal of using some sweet state grant money for beginner farmers to build a similar business as yourself. Thanks again!

Morgan are you able to do a video on like how you sell/ more so package your farms products. Would love to see the process of what actually went on behind the scenes when you sell beef, eggs and your bird meat. Would also like to see the difference from how you sell it online to customers vs doing it locally.

I’m so scared of making mistakes when my husband and I finally get land to start farming in 5 years or so. I have livestock experience and am experimenting with how to grow crops in my garden on a really small scale. I’ve lost a lot of plants, couldn’t get my brussels sprouts to grow, and I just lost three tomato bushes without any yield due to blossom rot.
Seeing you document and admit mistakes makes me feel a little less stressed by the idea of having a hobby/quasi-sustenance farm later on in life.
    Thank you Morgan.

I like Abby's summer house. I think it was wonderful you sat in it with her and spent time with her because I think that is why she likes it and probably feels comfort there because of that. I think she sits by the area she does by that fence to watch the farm toward your house because she is looking for you and Toby and maybe Allison and the barn cats. I think she wonders where you are and when you are coming to visit her and let her come back home.
Morgan a lot of what you say in this video also applies to people who want to retire to a small homestead and be debt free. In 2021 I bought a 80+ year old house that needs a lot of TLC. I also wanted to have a large garden to help with food costs and better food quality. I did what you said you should have done, I waited and lived in the house and I'm still living in the house two years later with not much more than bare essentials completed but I'm glad I did that because it has kept me from doing renovations that I would have wanted to change if I would have been able to do them in the beginning. I have drawn many sketches and changed those sketches multiple times. I am doing everything myself so most of my procrastination is actually due to the fact I have to wait until I can afford it. I sold my longtime homestead and paid cash for this place where I am now and I am doing everything as I can afford it because I want to stay debt free. I have a big garden and that has been more of a priority to me than the house because I like to eat and social security doesn't provide all that I would like to have but a garden really does help me eat better and is good exercise.

Thank you so much for this! I grew up on a farm but at 17 moved out thinking I knew everything, that I would get an office job and make all my money that way but I realized how unhappy I am there. I’m now 34 and I just accepted a part time position at my local cooperative extension service to further my dreams as a flower farmer (I also drive DoorDash on the side) it’s so scary because I have for years been the breadwinner and only worked worked worked, but ultimately I’m going to be happier.

I know from keeping a small assortment of non-farm animals in the house (fish, guinea pig, chinchilla, cats) that jobs such as keeping them well-housed, fed, watered, appreciated, along with healthy vet checks do not put themselves on hold if you are sick, absent or feeling a bit lazy one day. I admire anyone doing anything that requires going out in the early morning hours, with inclement weather such as snow and sleet or hot humid days. I wouldn't last a week!😉 QUESTION: Was the gosling part of this video was filmed recently as the youngest still seem a little small to free range at night. If a gosling somehow got stuck or lost would Toby (or Abby) notify their BFF (aka Morgan)?

You might want to trim up the lower branches on the trees to lift the canopy, reduce the energy in the smaller lower branches and send that energy up to the higher growth.
Also reduce the risk of damage and disease from livestock browsing and scratching.

2:09 in the forest the trees don’t need to grow in swales and Burms, you can even see trees growing on the sides of mountains and cliffs without problems at all, so even you plant those trees in a really straight line which I may say will look better in air and will make your drone shots more satisfying to watch,

Morgan, I love your channel, it is so informative & while I'm never going to be a real farmer, because I'm a city girl, I have thrilled in growing my own food crops out back in stacked gardens & would love to have just enough chickens, goats, bees, guard dogs & cats to keep me eating organic, pasture-raised healthy meats more affordably, making even just enough from excess eggs to cover expenses. Honestly, Organic Pasture Raised Eggs (OPREs) are nearly $8 a dozen here. Goat milk is over $5 per *quart.* 😱 There is no comparison between Grand Ol' OPRES and the $1.22 variety. I can go most of the day (to 3 or 4pm) on a orange yolk egg of bug-eating chickens. The pale yellows of factory hens? If I eat at 8AM, I'm "hangry" by 10. And goat milk? No belly bloat! And it naturally contains nutrients that aid brain function and weightloss. So, yeah...I need my own goats. Little ones. We're allowed 5 animals in the city per property. So the goal is making use of these two properties next door to each other: 2 goats, 3 chickens, 2 dogs, 2 cats and (get this) an indoor beehive - the double-brick wall of the old house has a hive known to have been active for 20-30 years and you can hear them loudly in an unused hall in the basement by the back door. So the plan is to put outside doors sealing in that section, create a contained bee-expansion space with manageable frames connected to a hole in the wall using plumbing pipes with screen "valves" that can be shut so sections can be removed & worked on independently, without disturbing the whole mega-hive. A one way funnel would allow any escaped bees that don't go out the outside door to re-enter the hive or be caught & released to the outside hive entrance. Still working on the plan, and a lot will depend on whether this 200 year old, built-on-a-steep-slope house's foundation can be stabilized. But it's so perfect because the outside entrace is a wild hive, 25 feet off the ground, cutting liability issues, and it makes use of the overgrown street's knotweed (which adds natural anti-aging nutrients to the honey - and no, is not poisonous to humans or animals, including goats, who find it delicious).
