Housing doesn’t seem cheap. I live in Florida and comparing it to Des Moines not huge difference and salaries way lower. I applied for the same job in Des Moines Mercy Hospital and they gave me the job but the pay was a joke. I was going to move up there but not for making less and paying for a house close to 400k
Des Moines Metro the median price of a property in DSM is 262K Aug of 2022 (was 245K in Aug 2021). Hard to tell where you live at in Flroida to get a grasp on the housing market. Rural Florida is not drastically lower than 262K and I'm certain any major city is well above 262K. Do you have actual numbers to help me understand & compare? Always curious on a consumer's perspective of different markets. That all being said, my wife is a nurse so I'm familar with the nurse wages in Iowa vs other areas and there can be some drastic differences in wages between states.
@@testaccount-darsongrantham3224 I live in Jacksonville. Places I was looking to live in Des Moines was more suburb, west Des Moines, Ankany, Johnson, Wakee. So homes I looked at were over 400k I do not see listings in those areas any less. I have a nursing degree too and the offer was a joke. In Mandarin area where I live homes sell at similar price as what I see there. In my opinion for those type of wages homes around and over $400k are not affordable. The 262k in Suburbs of Des Moines does not seem realistic to me. You might find few for 260K but it might be small, too old and needing investment in it.
@@gjimip Agreed homes in the suburbs for under 300K are very dated and smaller, but closer to downtown you would be able to find some size and style for 300K. Seems like your issue is more with the nursing wages of Iowa vs the housing costs. Either way, really appreciate your insight and your profession is severly under appreciated in all states IMO, but again I might be a little bias as my wife is a BSN and has a Master Nutrition Thereapy certification!
@@Livingindesmoines thanks for the replay man. If I’m going to make less than here in Florida I got to compensate at least with cheaper housing. I have 3 kids so schools are important for me too. When I did my research suburbs of Des Moines seem to have better schools. Either way I’m going to see the place in person one more time and if I like it I’ll make the move. I’m finishing up my DNP so I won’t be able to make a move till next year anyways. Thanks for the video man. Maybe I’ll move after I come see it again with few friends that are wanting to live in a smaller place.
Where in Des Moines do you shop for organic non gmo food. We are moving there from Washington state and that’s how we shop and want to know where to go when we get there😁.
@elisemalm4768 This question is RIGHT up my alley!! My wife does the grocery shopping but we frequent Costco (West Des Moines or North Ankeny), and Fresh Thyme (West Des Moines). We also grow as much of our own foot and meat. We also have bought into multiple CSA from local farmers like Grade A Gardens in Earlham. OH and dont forget the summer farmers markets in most of the cities but specifically downtown Des Moines.
Is it feasible to live on a single income there with a big family, I live at the bottom of the world (new Zealand) and am trying to get over there but that seems quite expensive
Many live here on a single income and its one of the most affordable places in the united states. Many awards actually. And also remember, we as a family choose to live the way we do, we used to live in a 200K house on the southside of des moines with 3 adults 4 kids and 2000 sqft of finished living space on a 95K income
@@Livingindesmoines cheers for the reply, it just seems expensive compared to new Zealand, when I look at what a heavey diesel mechanics *my profession* pulls in over there, average of $67000 a year
@@germanywinner6652 Ah, yes, totally understand, 67K is average but my cousin is the president at a local mechanics shot and their top mechanics can make close to or over 100K for perspective. Also there are pockets of the city and suburbs that are even more affordable and safe! Quite a variety of options really.

7-10 Grand a month ?
Gawd.
Definitly could remove some of those expnses to get closer to $5000/mo but its not fee to live here ;)
@@Livingindesmoines Understood. Thanks for the output / input & content :)
$500 a month for taxes!
You'll see around 2% annual RE taxes here, higher than we'd like to see for sure!!
