I just finalizing my acceptance at Drake University so I'll be moving to Des Moines in 5 months so, I'm watching videos about the city because I'm from Texas and want to get an idea of what to expect haha. Thank you so much for your video.
Wonderful! Des Moines is looking forward to welcoming you!! Let us know if we can help answer any questions or produce videos on any topics you want to know about!
The wife and I are looking to spend a few days in Des Moines in February. It is in our top 3 places to move starting in 2020. What things would you suggest doing in the winter?
Hey Tyler!! February is TOUGH for activities in Des Moines because the weather could be 5 degrees or 35 degrees or 50 degrees!!! My first thought would be Brenton Skate Plaza which is an outdoor skating rink downtown. Another thing to do would be Living History Farms has a really cool dinner that they have on the weekends. And this one would be a Non event, but get a coffee at Smokey Row on Cottage grove and walk around Sherman Hills neighborhood. ( You could do this same thing, but drive around Beaverdale) Go to the East village on a Saturday, the shops are really cool to walk through and experience
@@Livingindesmoines there are sports like Hockey on the weekends usually minor League like the DesMoines buccaneers. The Iowa wolves, Barnstormers, Iowa wild and DesMoines Menace. I want to do the indoor go-karting. Good Restaurants. The skating plaza on the winter reminds me of Rockefeller center in New York. There is always something to do in Des Moines even in the winter.
Hi Alissa, I think there are parts of Des Moines that might resemble some larger cities, but in all reality it is a much slower paced and much less expensive. Really not very similar taking everything into account. This is a HARD question to answer with many disclaimers!
@@Livingindesmoines The Des Moines Iowa skyline is bigger than Columbus Ohio and much prettier with all the colored lights on the sky scrapers and they look cool reflecting off the Iowa river.
Your gas and heating bill will clobber you come winter. Drive a 4WD vehicle if you want protection against ice, mud, and snow in bad weather. Wear the right clothing and boots. They are essential. Stay off of University between MLK and 2nd Avenue. Watch your speed. Too easy to get a ticket. Officers wait on corners and roadsides for opportunity to write their quota.
Happy to help! Reach out to our team livingindesmoines@kw.com in Iowa agents don't get paid for helping tenants find rental units, but we can help you get the lay of the land before moving here!
Don’t move to Grimes or Granger there is no good way to get anywhere without dealing with traffic. Also avoid the south side of Des Moines and Norwalk because they have the same issues. Everyone will tell you the western suburbs is where you want to be. I say don’t listen to them and give Ankeny and Altoona a serious look. These North and East suburbs have so much to offer!!!
Dealing with traffic in Grimes Granger, southside and Norwalk.... thats a 20-30 minute commute... Each of those areas has a lot to offer without traveling much IMO... But defiantly each lack some thigns also, which I why I put together these videos!
Hi Luis, help me understand what you are looking for please. Are you wanting to buy an investment property using it as a rental? If so there are a list of questions I'd want you to get clear on before choosing an area/neighborhood. For what it is worth, I own 14 doors as a real estate investor so I'm VERY familiar with the mind of an investor. Now if you are looking to rent a property in Des Moines, again, a different list of questions to get you more clear on what exactly you are looking for. So help me get clear on what you are looking for as I'm hear to help!
Any place that has 3+ million people living there can't be "that bad". Iowa has its pros and cons, personally I love Iowa! Some people don't enjoy it for various reasons.
@@Livingindesmoines I agree the lower the population the better ! Kansas City had that but it's growing rapidly now ! I like Des Moines, it's KC metro 20 years ago !!
