  • On September 13, 22 year old Mahsa Amini died after being detained by Iran’s morality police for allegedly violating strict laws requiring women to cover their hair with a headscarf, or hijab.
    Outrage over her death sparked protests that are challenging the very existence of Iran’s Islamic leadership.
    BBC Persian’s Jiyar Gol looks at what young people are demanding and why some are saying this could be a turning point in the fight for equality.

And it's important to recognise them as such, especially because they can get cut off the internet. I know media does like to have its slang when it comes to young people, like in Myanmar it's "generation Z". Cried so much watching this. This is heartbreaking but at the same time heartwarming knowing that Iranian women and young girls are no longer afraid, they were always educated, they were always enlightened but now they can no longer be silenced and are no longer afraid to stand up and speak out. What is more encouraging is that more men are now standing up for their mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, wives, daughters and girlfriends supporting this cause with them. A lot of respect to activists who have carried the torch for fair treatment of women for decades now, your sacrifice will not be in vain. I remember as a young teenager watching the film 'Not without my Daughter' - that was very tormenting, i can only imagine what it must be like for these women who have to put up with this every day of their lives. For 40 years this has been their reality! I am from a small Pacific island nation and in our country women are held in high regard. @@Sam-ht4og that's a good point. I likely won't be able to reply for some time, but could you please point to other moments where tensions simmered over into a boil? Perhaps all i had gleaned was that during a drought, people were having to go without water and there was an issue about that connected with governance by the regime that was causing unrest. That said, it didn't seem clear from the reports available in English that there was a resistance to theocratic rule in particular, it was seemingly an outcry specific to access to water. But it's not hard to imagine that if you were severely afflicted by dehydration in connection with decisions made by a regime that you wouldn't be forgetting stuff like that overnight. I even wondered whether a recent video of retro Iran circulating on UA-cam had played something of a role if that kind of material was hard to come across - if it became kind of a touchstone of sorts. My own attention is so divided i haven't managed to watch it yet, but it's interesting to consider the factors that draw together to make this something which is happening now, as opposed to, say, 5 years ago.

      It does make sense though. Iran is not like the other theocratic states in the region, in that it had a history of secularism under the Shah. These kids grandparents, and likely some of their parents as well remember a time when women were not oppressed to this extent. It seems that when going from a kind of freedom to tyranny, the tyranny cannot last forever. I’m not defending the Shah for the record, that regime had its own flaws, but extreme religious oppression wasn’t one of them.

Freedom: True freedom ( spiritual freedom) is to serve God and his prophets. And life is temporary on this earth. Average life span of human beings is 60/70 years old. After that we will meet God. Many of these women do not believe in your religion and shouldn't be forced to. Even if they did, why should they be punished or face any kind of scrutiny for it? “Turning point in the feminist movement in Iran”? Aren’t they simply asserting their basic human dignity to be able go outside without harassment and persecution?

    • @mothratemporalradio517
      @mothratemporalradio517 Рік тому

      Here's a newsflash: the fundamental foundation of feminism _is_ about basic human dignity, including to go outside without harassment and persecution. There are different strands of feminism, which the average dude may never recognise. 21st century microwave identity politics on social media isn't the be all and end all of a struggle that is over a century old. Nor is any outcome of that struggle a given in any place on earth, with women statistically being sexually assaulted, disappearing and being murdered in an obviously disparate way. For example for young women in the US, murder is one of the leading causes of death; the risk drops as the woman ages. Does that sound healthy and liberated? Check out how many women disappear or are murdered by men in the US in even one state. Laws seem equal? Nothing is a given, laws can be repealed. Feminism isn't about saying that no women are annoying or have authority they can abuse themselves (for example a number of women physically abuse children). It's about the belief that women do not deserve inherently lesser rights than men, and it's that simple.
      I also wouldn't really dub it feminism unless the Iranians call it that, but nevertheless it's blindingly obvious by their slogan that the status of women is at the centre of their struggle, and feminism is just another word for women's rights.
      Nothing says such struggles have to be or could possibly be identical between countries What is quite unusual and very disarming about this os that the men are right there beside the women supporting the same thing. 💪♀️ Not something you see everyday in the West.
      There's something for everyone to respect here in my view, and the respect shouldn't be contingent on disrespecting some other group - yet a lot of comments are of such a nature. Please use your imagination and listen to what they are saying. It doesn't matter what you call it. But it's very interesting that this struggle strongly appeals to men who consider themselves to dislike women's rights in the context within their own culture.
      It wouldn't be hard to agree that this is struggle on a different level but yeah, besides the US, check murder rate for women everywhere from Greece to France to Brazil. Many issues remain, if you use social media as a barometer then take it with a contingent pinch of salt (unsolicited advice, i believe in women's rights but a lot of things online are annoying and pretentious etc)

If that female cardiac surgeon gets detained on her way home because her hair is peaking out of a headscarf she shouldn't be forced to wear I guess it is also feminism. It is feminist because the Iranian man won't be arrested for not growing his beard. It's a law that applies to only one gender so it is sexist. It also seems like a violation of basic human rights too. I guess it's both.

    I was wondering the other day, how did humanity ever advance to the level we have come to, with our brutal ways and instincts?? Then I saw this video and remembered.... we advanced only by the extreme courage and sacrifice for those willing to stand for women, freedom, life! We must continue to advance as humans not fall back into the ditch of our own patterns of aggression, domination, submission. Maybe we are capable of much more if we could remember how important are women, life, and freedom? Worth standing up for.

If they do, don't let that be the end, and if you have to go underground, don't let that be the end. Now is your time. This is a Persian rose for you to help protect your spirit in the event they should try to harm you 🌹 they have hurt so many of your people for so long, yet your culture is so resilient, it has found all sorts of ways to express itself. But the risk is real and the sacrifices are real. And that suffering of your people is part of you, and part of this. I would have it that, if those people try to hurt you, you could be transported to a transcendent memory and vision of a field of roses, knowing that what you are part of is rewriting history and you're all incredibly brave. Your culture is one from which poetry springs. It is yours, and it's just a privilege to be able to see you all reclaiming it. Good luck, sisters and brothers.

      When did the West mention women, children, and minority rights when the West destabilizes nations, arms all factions in a war, and finances genocide and ethnocide, such as in Yuguslavia to Syrian civil war as contemporary examples. There was never mention of human rights only when US and the West seek to undermine enemy nations to rob their oil, minerals, and other resources.
