Most of these guys have such a great pedigree. The guitarist (the non-Steven-Wilson one, I mean), John Wesley, has done some writing and touring with Fish (the Marillion member) among other projects. Colin's (the bassist) been doing some really cool world-music-y stuff in the last decade. Gavin Harrison, the drummer, is one of the three drummers in King Crimson, at least he was the last I saw. He's one of the kits on the live version of 21st Century Schizoid Man they have on their official channel. That's Richard Barbieri on keyboards. You've heard him before, because I'm pretty sure you've mentioned Japan, of which he was a founding member. Yeah, this was an all-star lineup.
If you want to check out a relatively new and interesting band, i suggest "King Gizzard And The Lizzard Wizzard" (short: "gizz") They are an Australian indie/prog/psychadelic rock band with a large and diverse discografy. In 2017, they produced FIVE incredible studio records. They always aim to progress their musical styles from record to record, so it is not easy to describe them i one single comment. At first, their music did not quite get to me. My gateway into gizz was their most proggy record Polygonwanaland. I would like to se your first reaction to their song Crumbling Castle.
Hey, Dean ... enjoyed your commentary. John Petrucci is the guitarist. He listened to alot of Al DiMeola ... he uses MesaBoogie amps. Keep listening ... 🎧
This performance was just amazing! I wish I could have been there. While I've known of Porcupine Tree for a long time, I never really dug in until the last several months. I'm glad I finally got around to it! My 1st knowledge of Steve Wilson was his collaboration with Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth called "Storm Corrosion". Very dark and moody, yet sucks you in. Highly suggest checking both out!!
Howdy, Dean! Thanks for doing Anesthetize! Some highAF quality drumming throughout.👍 Loved the "is this djent?" comment. If you have to ask, then... 😂 I like what you said about PT not sounding "indulgent"; that it's creative musicianship as apposed to showing off. I immediately thought of Dream Theater. (Here come the disgruntled comments🙄) There's a Family Guy episode where Peter says he doesn't like the movie Godfather because it "insists upon itself". 😆That is how I feel about DT. It feels... soulless. Like a bunch of little Asian chess geniuses who have had their joy of life drained away by overbearing tiger moms. It's just technical because... technical. Whereas Porcupine Tree are comfortable with themselves and confident enough to explore creatively into multidimensional musical pieces. Just my two bits... 😉🌀
@@vishalsingh-yj8bk Wow! Our Venn diagram intersects at Tool. I enjoy Tool, Soen, Rishloo, Leprous, Rush, Muse, and Porcupine Tree. I will check out those you mentioned in order to broaden my horizons, my friend! 😁
@@jennifer9047 For Riverside these songs are a must listen which serves as a good intro to their sound - time travellers , lost , conceiving you, second life syndrome(must) , depth of self delusion, in two minds ...
To me, this is a masterpiece of a song. Everything is just perfect from beginning to end. Your channel is becoming one of my favorite reaction channels! Thanks for these vids and keep on doing great job! + My suggestion is a song from my home country Shine On Me by Kingston Wall. Excellent stuff.
Thank you! I had a pair of the AKG Quincy Jones model Q701 a bunch of years back. Reference headphones and I had issues with them as I didn’t have anything good enough to really power them. I finally got a new receiver that I started using them with and was blown away. Until my kids broke them. Lol.
Damn I clicked so hard on the play button as soon as I saw the video. Awesome 👍. Your next porcupine tree reaction should be 'porcupine tree: what happens now' cause it has one of the same riffs as anesthetize so it would be fun to see u compare them.
"now I wanna hear the album version, comparing them" *listens to exactly the same song* - that's how good they are. Like Tool or A Perfect Circle the live version almost exactly matches the album version. Some say it's boring. To me it's impressive.
It's a little different. Gavin's ad-libbing some of the drum fills, and John always improvised the solos a little live. But as far as QUALITY goes, yeah, just the same.
I prefer the live version. I think the percussion sound much better, whereas the studio version sounds a bit cheap to me. I dont like the cheap sampled triangle-sounds in the start of the studiosong...
I'm surprised you didn't mention the harmonies. This is where I think they were perfect, as opposed to when you thought there should be some in the last Tool song you did. I disagreed with you though. 😁
I've realized harmonies would sound out of place in tool. Not part of their sound as a whole I think. Wilson is much more pop influenced and they are quite gorgeous sounding usually
Good choice of word, 'cinematographic' really captures the scope of their music-and the prog genre too.

PT’s Deadwing album was the basis for a movie which didn’t see the light of day ......

The studio version is identical to what you just heard live.
I think to have to go back and listen to progressive rock past 2000.
I love that you picked up the YYZ-sounding 1st guitar solo, because on the studio version it's actually Alex Lifeson that plays the solo!
No way! Yes, will be doing the studio version soon....

What headphones are they? I’m always looking for new ones to try.

It’s not Neó prog. I have no idea where you got this. Steve Wilson did ambient music.
