@Dexy Nash cry me a river, dont want to support people with the same interest thats fine, dont stay and complain its "kinda pointless and unsatisfying"
While I agree with Dexy's frustrated sentiment regarding the series' seemingly never ending hiatus, I feel these channels are the only catharsis I may ever get. If I can't have a concrete conclusion, i will definitely settle for educated speculation. Highly informative and highly entertaining.
Great discussion Robert / IDG , always love hearing about Dragonstone as it is a fascinating locale in the narrative. The description of the area as a sort of hot , hazy , smoky place with the amazing Valyrian architecture castle seemingly of that fused black stone manipulated and shaped using dragon-fire and likely some type of magic. Of which DS definitely seems the spiritual home of the Targaryens and likely the closest remnant of Valyria with the architecture and volcanic attributes. The shared volcanic aspect of Dragonstone and Valyria could be part of why dragons seem to like and thrive there. And DS is not only a fascinating somewhat mysterious island and castle , but it has played a pivotal part in the narrative and its history ; being the most western outpost of the Valyrian Freehold (while it still existed) , and the place where Aegon I was born and launched his invasion / conquest from that has massively changed Westeros since. Ntm it played a role in the Dance and many key influential characters past and present have been born or lived / occupied Dragonstone at one point. DS even had the significance / distinction of being given to the heir apparent to the Iron Throne. It is interesting to analyze what effect Targs who embraced or did not like Dragonstone meant and the same with dragons who were born and grew up there compared to on mainland Westeros. I have long subscribed to Robert's view on the importance GRRM has placed on islands in the ASoIaF narrative , of which DS is certainly one of them. Will be interesting if / when we get more clarity from GRRM about if the CotF ever lived there in great numbers and if it was an important site for them as many of us suspect it was ; especially given the vast amounts of dragonglass there that we know is effective against the Others , was used to make glass candles (by the Valyrians) , used to be given to the NW , coveted item used in trade etc. Will be great if we get more info with the CotF's view of and involvement with DS. Also interesting the connection to some Azor Ahai figures with DS , with DS' salt and smoke attributes being an island in the ocean and its hazy / smoky / volcanic properities. Look forward to seeing what part Dragonstone will play on the remaining portion of the narrative ; as mentioned it could be a key part of Dany , fAegon , and Jon's arcs and perhaps other characters as well. Great to get this "Secrets" series back Robert , look forward to more installments.
Thank you for another excellent video, Robert! You always have interesting guests, fascinating topics, theories and thoughtful insights into the series. I can't tell you how much I appreciate having your wonderful videos to look forward to each week. They are definitely helping me manage the stress of life in quarantine! You are, by far, my favorite UA-cam content creator!
I am not really convinced that Starfall is a place of the Children of the Forest. I think that because of Dawn, the legendary sword of house Dayne. It seems to be pretty much the opposite of Valyrian Steel. It is almost white, but Valyrian Steel is almost black. Therefore I think we are supposed to see Starfall, as it is the place where the comet that Dawn was forged of landed, as an opposite to Dragonstone, where a lot of dragonglass comes from. MY little Theory: Dawn is a weapon to kill dragons, because of the clear opposite appearance to Valyrian Steel. Actually: Down is almost white and it seems to be glowing. I literally immagined it as burning ice, which again seems to be a complete opposite to frozen fire. Addition: Dragonglass comes from deep within the earth, but the comet literally flew down from the sky.
You are an absolute champ. You crank out amazing content always and please know it's very appreciated. Take care and just know I'll watch your videos no matter the audio quality
I’m of the opposite opinion. I don’t want to see all these magical stone creatures showing up this far along in the story including but not limited to whatever is ‘hiding’ underneath Winterfell
Dragon architecture is an interesting concept and idea... Dragon business, go back to your seats... ( like Anakin Skywalker Jedi business, in Star Wars...). Well, Dragon business, dragon places, dragon behaviour, this is something...
I definitely believe the Stone Dragon waking will be Dragonstone erupting. We know it's a volcanic island... and well, a 'dragon waking from stone' has easy volcano connections.
With ice on her lips and fire within She sealed her fate whilst still hoped to win Blood made him betray the Queen, her heart full of love for him, and so she leaned in. Their kiss suddenly cut short The death on her lips could not be fought She fell, he caught her still, her heart one with his blade of steel She finally made him kneel, whilst she lay there still Their bleeding hearts did break the wheel As he goes North the land will heal As he goes forth his heart will feel the weight of guilt, the pain of kill His heart shall not heal, he loves her still.
So many fantasy stories involve the end of magic and a transition towards a modern world of technology instead. Lord of the Rings and the Inheritance Cycle are good examples of this. A Song of Ice and Fire excites me because it is the opposite - magic is coming back into the world, and it is defying "intelligent" understanding (maesters). I hope that this isn't the last hurrah of magic, that Dany will inevitably fail and all her dragons die and the fantastical elements once again fade into the past, leaving Planetos mundane.
Great episode! Thankyou !! Also, I'm suprisingly enjoying the wizard of Oz on your other channel! I always enjoy ' the well told tale' but I was a little sceptical of this one... Then I listened and I loved !!! Thankyou!
Do you guys think that Drogon went back to Dragonstone instead of old Valeria after her death? If this place is truely such an ideal home for Dragons and wild dragons lived there, why not? Theory: The magic of Valeria used to make dragon stone is what helped keep dragons strong and the Targarens sane. You mention them becoming more "westerosy." perhaps thats because they lost a source of power that held their minds steady? Maybe its why the Mad King was mad, and why her brother was totally mental, and maybe why she lost touch with reality?
I don't think Valyria made the Targaryens sane I think it was the incest that made them insane in westoros but you could be right about how Valyria kept the dragons strong there
Flinted Steel totally agree. Also Victarion is kind of a dimwitted brute and thinks women cannot rule. He doesn’t want to fight for her or her claim, he wants a pretty bride and some dragons for himself. I doubt Dany would/ will like him very much, even if he wouldn‘t try to steal her children.
Victarion is going to die, as Euron surely planned. Victarion thinks he's betraying Euron and taking a dragon for himself, but I'm 100% sure Euron knows he's going to do this and sent him on his mission with that in mind.
Jokin' H'ghar yes, always when I read his chapters, I‘m amused and also kinda pity him because he thinks, he‘s tricking Euron. But as you say, he‘s probably just doing Eurons bidding, without even knowing it.
Daenys the Dreamer purportedly had a vision of the impending Doom, yet we do not know the truth of the situation. Although a noble Valyrian family, the Targaryen dynasty was on the lower echelons of high society, hardly to be thought of or contended with. Mayhaps she was an astute observer, deceiver, and tactician who took note of the magically restrained volcanoes, hearing of a new slave religion (TGOMF) and cultivated a more treacherous plan than any...or just a more magical human. Cersei's trial in the show was done pretty well, could be very similar for the book-plot. Another brilliant video as always, both sides giving content and deeper ruminations
Is there any precedence that if John blows the horn of winter will it also wake the stone dragons on dragonstone in addition to the winterfell statues Or maybe the azora hai isn't one person and when Danny blows the dragon horn she wakes them
dragons and magic go hand in hand dragonstone was possibly a place of power for the children of the forest I wonder if that's why dragons did so well there, because there's so much magic there and are there still hiding children of the forest?
Hey I am trying to reach out to someone who would know of any podcasts that do chapter by chapter analysis of ASOIF. I have only found 1 on you tube and she only goes up to chpt 40 of clash of kings (its very good) .... or can someone reach out and help
Taking the risk of sounding like a bit of a dick, I must say that not knowing what crenelations are kinda caused a chain reaction for me: Crenelations, a key (also well known and easy) bit of medieval castle architecture. Not knowing what they are = cant picture castles described in medieval style books. That limits (to an extent) my appreciation for opinions expressed... in a massive exageration, kinda like not being as interested if a university lecturer in a course on english literature didnt know who Shakespeare was. There could be valid points and interesting comments after this, but it's all being undercut. Im overstating it and no offense is meant and I did continue listening buuut still... overthinking being the main purpose of videos on Ice&Fire, I dont feel out of line completely :P
Though how does that effect something such as her theories regarding the story or lore? They're talking about Dragonstone and mention Dragonstone doesn't even have crenellations. Crenellations are talked about once in the video and that was it. So, crenellations afterwards dont have any significant impact on the rest of the conversation whatsoever. Why does her her not knowing what they are effect her opinion on story driven theories? If it had to do with something regarding crenellations I would totally agree with you but it doesnt seem to be the case here. I do agree though that crenellations (jeez I've now said that word more times now then in my entire life lol) are one of the first things you learn about when reading of medieval castles and if you read fantasy and dont know what they are than go look them up.
The discussion wasn't about the finer points of the architecture of Dragonstone (much of which would be fairly different from baseline medieval castle architecture, given that they were making it with magic and would have freedom in the shaping to try things that would be very difficult to piece together from multiple stones). The discussion was more of a literary interpretation/exploration of how it fits into the mythology and history of the story world and what that means for the potential future events of the story. Your comment is not an example of overthinking; it's an example of failing to think.
Lol. She has a channel with various videos about asoiaf. Just because for a second she couldnt remember the name of 1 of 100s of characters shouldn't suddenly diminish her credibility. Happens to everyone eventually when your actively talking about history whether its fiction or non fiction.
Just found this channel surprisingly. I thought I had found every GoT lore channel by now, but apparently not. I haven't stopped binging since.
This channel is the best of them
@Dexy Nash cry me a river, dont want to support people with the same interest thats fine, dont stay and complain its "kinda pointless and unsatisfying"
@Dexy Nash unless you’re a commercial airplane there is no need to announce your departure
While I agree with Dexy's frustrated sentiment regarding the series' seemingly never ending hiatus, I feel these channels are the only catharsis I may ever get. If I can't have a concrete conclusion, i will definitely settle for educated speculation. Highly informative and highly entertaining.
Welcome!! Robert's great! Enjoy!
When I get the notification for In Deep Geek I get excited like a kid on Christmas. Thank you Lord Robert.

Wonderful discussion, Ser Robert. Thanks for ALL you do! Cheers. 🍷
You are an absolute champ. You crank out amazing content always and please know it's very appreciated. Take care and just know I'll watch your videos no matter the audio quality
As usual, fascinating themes. And this theme is great... I'm readind Fire and Blood and Dragonstone is an amazing foundation... Thanks!
I find it interesting that gargoyles are only found on dragonstone and winterfell. I haven’t seen it mention anywhere else in Westeros
Except Tyrion, haha!
I still harbor a hope that one day some magic will happen and all those statues and dragons decorating the castle will come alive.
I’m of the opposite opinion. I don’t want to see all these magical stone creatures showing up this far along in the story including but not limited to whatever is ‘hiding’ underneath Winterfell
I suspect that what will happen won't be that exactly, but will be close enough that the stories/prophecies of such make sense.
Dragon architecture is an interesting concept and idea... Dragon business, go back to your seats... ( like Anakin Skywalker Jedi business, in Star Wars...). Well, Dragon business, dragon places, dragon behaviour, this is something...
Audio isn’t that bad! Wonderful discussion, thoroughly enjoyed this video!

Good job to both of you, and thank you! 🌝

Another amazing video
I LOVE these deep dive videos, thanks for the content!
Late to the party but great conversation about Dragonstone 👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastically fun episode.

Of course Dragonstone is a volcanic island, obsidian (dragon glass) is found in large quantities under the castle...
In Deep!
Here we are three years later . And still no closer to WOW
Great episode! Thankyou !! Also, I'm suprisingly enjoying the wizard of Oz on your other channel! I always enjoy ' the well told tale' but I was a little sceptical of this one... Then I listened and I loved !!! Thankyou!
Holy crap! You look like Kenny Omega here! :O
Scintillating discussion. Would love to know more on the Valyrian magic and building of Dragonstone.
Do you guys think that Drogon went back to Dragonstone instead of old Valeria after her death? If this place is truely such an ideal home for Dragons and wild dragons lived there, why not?

If so, the Small Council would have known about it. Dragonstone is not far from Kings Landing.
I don't think Valyria made the Targaryens sane I think it was the incest that made them insane in westoros but you could be right about how Valyria kept the dragons strong there
Why would Dany take Victarions ships? He will join her, he will end up fighting for Dany against Euron. Victarion is a beast.
Well I don't think she'd be very fond of him blowing dragonbinder to try and steal her dragons lol

We Snarks and Karsnarks have a long and "complicated" history, but "Sansa" represented her House with pride and glory, as ever!
Is there any precedence that if John blows the horn of winter will it also wake the stone dragons on dragonstone in addition to the winterfell statues
Or maybe the azora hai isn't one person and when Danny blows the dragon horn she wakes them
Did you get rid of your other dragon stone videos the part 1 and part 2 of weary traveler?
dragons and magic go hand in hand
dragonstone was possibly a place of power for the children of the forest
I wonder if that's why dragons did so well there, because there's so much magic there
and are there still hiding children of the forest?

Did anyone else see some romantic chemistry between them two?
I feel that with almost every IDG guest interview, he was vibing with JoeMagician lol
i think between Dragonstone, the dragon glass, and the glass candles, they will learn how to make Valyerian swords again.
Nah, Valyerian Metal needs to remain and exclusive weapon. Shouldn’t be available to the masses
I see you apologized for the mic issues. But what about that hair, Robert? 😂😂😂... I kid!!!
IDG!!!
makes you wonder why they didnt make dragonstone the capital seems like a strategic error to me
lot of audio issues lately
I dont believe loris actually is hurt he probably stayed behind to hold dragon stone and they said he was hurt
Woah...
Sneakrets!
🔥🐉🐉🐉
really bad audio,, but great video
In Deep Geek COD gaming mic
Your mic is well overdriven
Go on then, I'll watch this video to see which bits of repackaged PJ stuff from a video 4 years ago rears its head...
He also makes Middle-Earth videos that Men of the West has done, and in some cases done better. But I still enjoy hearing In Deep Geek’s POV.
Is Sam the American version of Gemma aka Secrets of the Citadel ?
25:45 what type of witchcraft is this?!?!?
What happened to her???
@Robby Podobinski I’ve no idea. Was posting quite often than nothing for going on 8 months

Everyone knows Daeny's the Dreamer.
