- In this video I show the different axes in my collection, from splitting axes and felling axes to hatchets and racing axes. The major currently active companies I like are Hultafors/Hults Bruk, Ochsenkopf, Mueller Hammerwerk, Rinaldi, Tuatahi and Basque. As for vintage, Brades axes are what I like.
You gave more information on axes than I ever heard from anyone . I'm 71

I collect and restore antique axes myself. You have a very fine collection, and a wealth of knowledge on them.

Ben, me and a friend found a big downed tree on the side of an old forest road and we've been working on processing it into firewood for a few days now with our basque axes, and I've found I've left off using the pendulum technique. It doesn't seem to work well if the log is on the ground. We have close to a face cord split and stacked with only our axes so far. We have split a few of the pieces that were already sawn to length from when they removed the tree from the road though. These Jauregi axes are awesome, I've never had a 30 inch handle before and it's a real game changer.

Another great one may cause another few purchases lol. I love the English pattern my friend (who is also scottish) did a blacksmith course at my College and said he'd make one for me which was nice. The Mueller is very good though its a slightly different method of chopping but its still pretty effective especially as been cutting a load of Willow lately and just whatever I can. Another friend has a Eucalyptus that needs seeing to. Also thinned out my short handle 4 1/2lb spearwell and that really penetrates now its almost like an English Racing axe for cutting and is still awesome for splitting big chunks of Ash or anything fairly splitable in a hurry.
Ben there are several American pattern axes with a 5+" bit and larger polls...Connecticut, Jersey, and Rockaways just to name a few!
In my experience they are'nt that different really, not clearly visible. in any case i think the plain old dayton/yankee is the best pattern axe when you go over 3lb
Tuahtahi work with wings out is ordered. Had the Basque 1.75 after your advice. And must admit it's been better than I had hoped. Was after the Basque racer but 2 month watching Lamania lost hope . Decided I had one so be happy at that. Just my luck guess what came in stock on fathers day 😭😭😭😭
Unfortunately the basque axes are like that now. I think you will find the tuatahi to be fantastic though

I just started my axe addiction, im not ready for intervention yet.
but I did reserect an old rusty one and made a new handle from scratch and a leather sheath already.
this could get bad, I'm hooked.
I think its a great hobby, I get a lot of fun out of restoring them also. sometimes the roughest looking head can be a surprisingly high performing tool when done

I have just restored a record 0151r spokeshave and may attempt handle thinning with it, I know it's not your preferred tool for the job but is there a reason why I should avoid it?

Ebay, bought a big box of 5 double bits from the US, selling 3 at a higher UK price covered the total costs of the heads plus shipping, so it was essentially free

You have an impressive selection of kit!.On the Tuatahi work axe you have,is there any difference in the steel quality compared to their racing axes they make and what is waiting time like when you place an order?.Regarding your racing axes,is there much difference in the steel quality and finish between the Ochsenkopf,Basque and Tuatahi?.
They use the same steel for thier work axes as they do for the racing axes. Waiting time depends, up too 4 months but sometimes they are much quicker depending on seasonal demand. The steel and finish quality is about even between the basque and the tuatahi, the ochsenkopfs come unfinished as a 'blank' and need a lot of work before they can chop and unless you have a belt sander and angle grinder I would not advise them

Where'd that tasmanian go with the short handle Owen made? That guy who gave you his old beat up training axe knows how to give a good gift; I would be stoked to receive an axe like that.
I traded it back to owen jarvis along with my helko in exchange for the arvika. I found that the tasmanian was not as good as performer on the woods I cut so saw no need to keep it. without major regrinding across the entire cheek it wouldn't cut well and I decided i would rather spend that time on a racing axe. I think Owen is going to tune it up more
@@benscottwoodchopper Do you think thinning out a tasmanian that much is a bit of a shame? I would give up some cutting performance to retain the toughness of a tasmanian axe. Seems wrong to ruin what the axe is to make it cut a little better.

Wow great collection. I found a decorative double bladed axe head with my metal detector. How can I go about getting it identified? It is etched and has god like or indian head dress pic. Any thought would be helpful
that is an awesome find, i know very little about etched axes but there are some axe groups on facebook with people who will know 100%

Ebay mostly. Lamnia started stocking them aswell. 20 handles kinda suck, never liked them

Nice collection, out of those I only have a couple, I do have a tuatahi work axe, not the kingi, but the normal work axe, man is it a beast, definitely not a pack axe though, I use it if I am driving in somewhere too heavy to carry really, not that good at splitting either, but for chopping greenwood it’s fantastic.
What pattern of axe is the yellow painted one at around 15:00?

04:46 (not much tought put into the hatchet) I think and saw that too on so many american products. From Safety vests,emergency service vehicles, different planes, buildings and some other things...
i just think they took a felling axe head and scaled it down rather than think about how a hatchet is used for different tasks and therefore can be designed better for them

I see you keep your axes inside. I have heard that can cause loose heads due to humidity changes. Do you have any advice on that?
I live in quite humid shitholes mostly, if you have a properly insulated, dry heated home you will likely get more problems

@@benscottwoodchopper you said about getting rhineland axe for carving, so i found Alder versions for 26 to 29 quid. 600g and 800g. I want to find a nice 2.5lb axe. What do you suggest. I know that english pattern is the business, my uncle has one in mint condition, but will never part with it. I can have it when he's dead he says! Ha!

This bloke has not got a clue what he's on about, I'm 60 years of age and a retired logger, I've worked all over the world logging and building log cabins and to hear someone translate the word "Tomahawk to mean just, Axe should tell anyone he's full of wind because it actually translates to War axe or light axe
So here’s an experiment to try when presenting an argument. If you can simply replace certain words in your argument with any other words then it’s likely not a rational argument, and more likely an argument from eristics. In short, it’s a tone-argument, or an argument from (self-proclaimed) authority-neither of which are very convincing to free thinking people, of which I count Ben as one. The one piece of evidence for your argument that you offered relies on linguistics (which isn’t a problem in and of itself), but as neither of us are ancient languages experts, we’re all likely just Googling the term-let’s be honest about that.
