My son and I saw him in Norwich in Dec 2009. He did a workshop in the afternoon of the gig . He's such a nice friendly down to earth guy. We met him after the workshop and he was very polite and even allowed everyone stay for the sound check! The gig was just brilliant. He's a top guy and a fantastic guitarist!
I wonder if the tape on the knobs is just to keep the settings in place or to keep his tone a secret. His playing on these rundowns is giving me chills
@justinsokoloski it keeps his knobs consistent. So when he goes on tour and stuff... his knobs on his pedals wont get moved... so less fixing to do :) I want to do that with my gear... but I like to keep my knobs adhesive free :)
@LateNightShredder But you know, a lot of Eric's sound isn't his strat, even though the Strat's always been his main type guitar. You take the song "Zap" from his album "Tones" for instance -- it was recorded with a Gibson ES135. He played a Les Paul and a Flying V on "Tones" and "Ah Via Musicom", you know. Anyway, to my ears JB's stuff sounds like EJ's about 90% of the time. Sure he's good, you gotta be good to replicate EJ's stuff like that, but then again...
@guitarsteve6190 Flagged? haha No, cause there's nothing offensive in it. I didn't even try to sound badass or anything, I just spoke my mind. EJ's own influences show in his playing -- Clapton, Hendrix, Beck -- but he very brilliantly incorporated that into his stuff. As for Bonamassa, you say inspiration I say rip off!!! LOL Cheers, man!!!
@rosoftse Thats cool too :) those are great devices :) sound bomb... i always wanted the g major on my board... as much as i cant afford it and have space for it haha some people are pedal people.. some are not :) thats how it is :)
They are covered so when he frantically kicks one on he doesnt hit the knobs and ruin his settings. I think he would be a cool enough guy to flat out tell you what he has set up.
Quote: "It's only three knobs, how hard is it", he just doesn't want to try to remember these settings, good idea if you use a lot of pedals. Starting to think he might be human after all. He is also a fellow upstate New Yorker, for what that's worth.
He kinda nails a Trey A tone here and there in this video. Also when hes playing at 2:54 it sounds like the riff from.....??? Shit man my memory is gone, Zepln maybe.
@rosoftse I never sent you a private message LOL hahaha :) Yeah i think money isn't issue for me because i like saving up for the things I want :) I just love pedals and amps because Digital modeling can only do so much, right? I love analog and boosting already kinda driven amps with overdrive pedals and such :) I want to be the guy that stays simple his entire life :) guitar... pedal board... amps... DONE! lol I do love working with digital stuff though :) and yes he's AMAZING :D
Well I absolutely love Eric Johnson and I think there's actually too much of him in Bonamassa's playing. I don't think that's cool at all. I don't really hear his own signature, and when I wanna listen to Eric Johnson I listen to the man himself.

"I don't tune my own guitars" Sounds nice. Everything sounds ridiculously awesome. That rig is the most complex thing I have ever seen.
Joe coffey is the best for these interviews
I like the whole tape your nobs for live performance. It can get intense at times
Hell yeah, especially since the reunion got underway. Premier Guitar, Trey will be in KC and MN in Feb. Get on it!! :-)
he has tape on the knobs, he always uses the same settings for some pedals, for example that Boss dd3
Joe's tone is awesome!...I hear a lot of Eric Johnson in his playing...so cool.
I wonder if the tape on the knobs is just to keep the settings in place or to keep his tone a secret. His playing on these rundowns is giving me chills
anyone knows what picks hes using? i think its a dunlop jazz pick
@zx1357 it's called a theremin, :) it's a sick instrument :) it makes alot of the alien noises in early sci-fi movies :) FACT FOR YOU BRO!
@branch1234 his tone is somewhat similar. its moreso in his phrasing and dynamics than anything else. tone is in the hands!
Anyone know what venue this was filmed at in des moines. i live there and i would have loved to go see Joe.
joe is such a cool guy !

whats the deal with the tape on all the pedals?
What model tube screamer is that and how old?????
thx, i've missed it ;)
joe is such a good speaker. You don't even have to ask him a question, he'll take it and run with it!

why does he hide knobs with gaffer ?
pork loin + tube screamer + delay = ej tone

Dido they give me migraines
bencorbelful
2:14-- "I hide the settings so I don't kick them"
he SAID " I COVER up my settings so I don't kick them" maybe you've been playing your amp too loud for too many years ?
