“I am not an AI avatar” thats what an AI would say 😂😂
Haha, I was going to clip the "I am not a cat" video at the end, but just ran out of time! That one STILL cracks me up!
“I am not an AI avatar... yet”
Tim, you're the stand-up of AI commentary. Love the comedy!
Haha, thank you so much! All this stuff is so insane, you just have to laugh sometimes!
I watched this on my phone and kept waiting for the AI avatar demo. It wasn't until the video ended that I realized you were showing them!
Haha, I originally caught it on my phone as well, so I'm right with you!
It totally shocks me that Apple still doesn't have an AI of their own?
I mean--Siri? But...yeah, that's about as good as not having an LLM! I think they have one on the back burner-- but, not ready quick enough for the investors. They need to get out there now.
Yeah, me too. I'm a shareholder...
Hopefully we can opt out of the pushing to Gemini if Siri can't answer it. As always, I won't use anything that is Google, aside from UA-cam. I'm surprised of the idea that Apple would go with them considering they're the antithesis to their idea of privacy.
As for Tim Cook and Apple refusing to say "AI" for the longest time. Maybe it's because they really were the only ones that wanted to use the term accurately. The meaning of the term "artificial intelligence" has been so bastardized in the last few years because of what we now call "AI" that we had to create a new term (AGI) to take the place of what AI was defined as just a few years ago. Machine Learning is a much more accurate term for what we now call "AI" and Apple seems to have held out the longest on the changing of definitions. /endrant
I have the feeling there will be an opt out slider, but it won't be turned on by default. And likely, buried in a few submenus-- you might have to google how to find it!
And agreed on the ML/AL thing-- I think it was a bit of the Apple Hubris as well. While press and mainstream were dubbing everything AI (and don't get me started on the AI Dishwasher...UGH) they decided to double down on ML in the old school "Think Different" culture of Apple.
I totally applaud the idea-- but, I can also see why it backfired on them.
@@TheoreticallyMedia Yeah, I'd say that Apple wasn't right with their tactics, but instead, they were less wrong.
My mind twisted at 6:12 REAL-PEOPLE-VIDEO AVATARS. Holy wow!
It’s getting pretty nuts! I think we’ll see an avatar that should be able to convincingly appear to be a real person sometime this year.
Funny, I just saw a video where a dude sent his avatar in for a zoom job interview! The avatar did not get the job, but props for the amusement!
You are not an AI-generated avatar *yet*. #YouWillBeAssimilated
Haha-- maybe? You'll know for sure when I finally stop saying: "ummm"
Sometimes I hate being my own editor!
The Argil footage actually made me gasp. Wowsers!
Seriously! The Zuck one was a little off-- but that first one? Wow...Just wow.
Whever I think of Apple, I envision a sneaky, cocky man in his Apple ecosystem looking at everyone and smirking - 'You guys don't know what's coming. I now do'. Think the phone will cost much?
Thanks for the video. Yeah, the avatar was just short of realism, in that purgatory where I was uncomfortable with being comfortable. Thanks again Tim. 👍
Haha, is that man the Ghost of Steve Jobs?
And yeah, the avatars are close. Still a bunch of little things to work out, but I find it super fascinating to watch their progress. I'm still of the opinion that no matter how good they get, there will always be that bit of uncanniness to them, where we'll be able to tell.
...of course, I say that now...In a year I might be back to eat this comment.

😲 I'm impressed and I don't impress easily
I haven't been this impressed since HeyGen. Curious to try this one out for sure!
@TheoreticallyMedia
Definitely report back to us with your analysis! Good quality motion AI (video & avatars) is finally turning that critical corner of being potentially so good that the average person won't have a clue as to whether it's AI or not........I've waited a long time for this!
Just imagine how broadcast news could be impacted by this. We'll have perfect avatars giving us horrific news about wars, the failing economy, mass homelessness, skyrocketing unemployment, water shortages, etc, etc, etc.......... but at least we'll have perfect news personalities feeding us this stuff! Oh joy!
🤣 😭 😉
I can already imagine all these ai avatars being used for pranks, since you can make anyone say anything
I saw one example of Obama. I didn't feature it, as-- well, anything political ends up a mess, and I avoid it at all costs on the channel-- but, yeah-- this election cycle is not going to go well.
void compf test was right ig, eye movement is a tell.
That eye sees a turtle on its back...What will you do?
Haha, that's a good point through-- I'm not calling it perfect, but it is making some pretty big strides. I also got to thinking: I wonder if it would play better with some cinematic lighting. Like, would the AI Avatar be more believable if it looked like it were in a noir movie?
Might have to try that if I get beta access!
it's the little things, a child hood chicken pox scar, a cracked nail, a bruise under one cheek. blender artist deal with that increasing level of entropy with references. I'm not sure how AI would short of pulling assets and characters from actual simulations
Edit: things local t shirts of local sports teams and blood drives, tattoos ECT. I think it will be the same with most AI content at first at least. eventually you'll be able to put "retired boxer talks about the glory days" and it will simulate bone fractures and things before building the guy.
According to the original movie Westworld it's the hands - the hands give it away ....
I think they could shorten that Siri response to these 2 options:
1. If it's a Siri answer, just give the answer.
2. If it's a Gemini answer, just say "Gemini says...".
That way they can push any potential false info off themselves and onto Google and keep Siri pure in the user's minds.
“Tim says, that totally makes sense!”
Can you help me? I watched a video about a free video upscaler to rival Topaz but looking back through your videos I can't find it. It was either you or Matt Wolfe that covered it, but I was sure it was you. Am I wrong?
I know what you’re talking about! It wasn’t free, but was a pretty low cost upscaler that cost something like 4 cents a minute (don’t quote me on that!)- the funny part is: I can’t find it either!
I’ll dig through the archives in a bit to see if I can find it for you.
Sigh. I need to put together a page listing all the stuff I’ve covered!
@@TheoreticallyMedia I found it. Playing with it now. Video2X. Perhaps it wasn't you who covered it. Totally free, but runs quite slow on my laptop (a freelance beach bum can't afford much more).
I will always click like and already subbed! Love your videos Tim!
YOU ARE THE BESSSSST!!!!
@@TheoreticallyMedia yeah but your the man, and I know for a fact AI could never replace you my friend
I do like these journalism pieces along with your regular feature deep dives on various products. One stop shopping for all my AI news.
They're a LOT of fun to do too! I do need one of those "Reporter" hats soon!
Or we could call it 'AI AI Captain!'
Ha, I’d like to name it “Number One” and then have it respond to me as Aye, Aye, Captain!
The problem with Google's AI is that the data on your iOS devices may be analyzed and sold. We don't know this for sure but that is the Google business model. It is amazing to me, that Apple as one of the largest tech companies in the world can't come up with its own offering that is secure and not using data harvesting.
I think they've got it-- it's just going to take a few generations of hardware to have a solid user base. And that's something the investors won't stand for.
I can't help but think how epic an investor battle would have been against Jobs in his prime.
AI Zuck looked for human than the real Zuck.
Haha, Robot Zuck is more human than Alien Zuck!
too bad that new ai avatar tool doesnt have other avatars you can use. like you know public ones or something. looks neat tho
Actually, I would argue strongly that "hey Gemini" is easier to say than "hey Google". Just me? k.
I’d agree there! But not easier than saying hey Siri! That said, I don’t dare say that out loud or Alexa will get jealous.
Problem is having to say it over and over again because it’s either not listening to you because it judges your skin one way, or it went the other way, classifying you as a NotSea, again, because of it’s opinion of your skin. Turns out, it doesn’t matter how easy it is to prompt a racist AI, for the most part you’re probably going to regret saying anything.
Not sure what Apple is doing considering how well MLX is going. One thing is clear, they’re trying to use “safety” as a lame cop out. This is the company that said it’s sending everyone’s cloud and local storage to their servers for AI review and potentially human review if it gets flagged. Are they claiming they don’t trust themselves with AI conversation logs and that they’d be forced to train models with it after promising they wouldn’t? Are they afraid they’d sell it? It honestly makes no sense. And in the same breath they float a partnership with what’s been a genuinely racist model and if you saw what members of the dev team were saying it’d be dishonest to say it’s just the model that’s racist. For anyone curious, that’s what actual AI safety problems look like, an out of control massive corporation who thinks they’ve discovered the secret to making racism ‘different’ this time 🤢 🤮
There’ll be alternative onboard LLMs for those of us who don’t get a 16… probably.
The overall idea seems to be that you'll be accessing Gemini via a network-- I tend to think AppleGPT isn't going to be much better than Siri on launch as well...I mean, it'll work, but I'm personally not rushing out to get a 16!
I used to work management for Apples on the floor tech support and man...im glad im not there right now lol. I could only image the chaos.
Also, thanks for the vid!
Edit: I also 100% agree when its implemented in a seamless and easy to use way into things like smartphone/tablet/watch..thats when it will actually go mainstream and really take off (not like it already has not haha)
I just like walking past my local Apple store and seeing the line of folks gawking at the Vison Pro...that has to be such a time sink for the staff!
Were you in the Genius Bar? I knew some of the folks who worked at one, and man-- the stories they had!
Oh no those folks are a different beast haha we were the call center. I could only image what they deal with inperson calls were bad enough. @@TheoreticallyMedia
Those AI avatars are just looped video with the lips resynced.
Likely. I don’t think it’s a trained 3d model or anything. It just seems to have a longer loop cycle, and seems somewhat contextually aware of when to make body movements.
I’ll try to dig into the latest research papers on this soon
Unlike previous generations of caption generators, *Phlanx's caption generator* stands out with its ability to adapt to evolving trends and preferences in online communication. Its machine learning capabilities continuously improve, ensuring your captions remain fresh, relevant, and effective.
Great
Thank you!! This one was a pretty unplanned! Woke up this morning and was like, "Oh, THAT's News!" Haha, another day in AI!
Pretty imprressive! would you eventually use an AI avatar yourself you think?
maybe in a bit? I wouldn't use it on the main channel, but maybe experiment with it on a secondary channel where I could fire off more breaking news to you all.
I really love making these videos (and those moments of creativity that occur while shooting or editing them)-- so, I feel like the "AI Version" would be a little flat. But still, might be handy just to get the information out.
But-- I wouldn't do it here. At least...I wouldn't until you couldn't tell! Muhahaha!
Apple been quietly buying up AI companies, the most.
oh, I know-- I was going to mention that in the video as well-- but kind of felt like that was straying into a whole other rabbit hole. When they come roaring in, it'll be loud.
Adobe actually does that a lot as well. A BUNCH of stuff they showed off at Adobe Max last year, I was like "I've seen this before..."
👋
Lex Friedman had a good recent discussion with Sam Altman ..... have U seen it?
I haven't! I'll put that on the list! I'm sub'd to him on Spotify, so it should show up. Now...to fin the time to listen to a Lex interview! THAT'S always the problem!
Maybe I should open another channel where I just summarize what Lex and his guest talk about for 3 hours. "Lex in 10 minutes!"
@@TheoreticallyMedia AI succinct summary of 3 hour vid -> Argil AI . Done!
@@supersupersocco The true use case for this technology!!
Are you going to do an episode on Elon Musk releasing the Grok-1 uncensored open-source model for everyone? I'm confused if he's Robin Hood or if he just opened Pandora's box.
Both, but the model is too large for normal people to actually run it.
I can't tell they're AI avatars
It's really in the mouth movement-- the lip flap isn't quite right-- almost like they're being translated, or badly dubbed. But, that's just today's give away-- that'll be cleaned up in no time, I'm sure!
@@TheoreticallyMedia 100% and tbh a lot of videos that are real look like this lol
A and I you referenced are letters, not "words". hire a bot to write you a "script".
Haha, good call. I do refer to them as "Vowels" later-- eh, what can you do? I don't full script-- just bullet point. Even if I did full script (with a bot) I'd screw something up!
You are the best man! hahahaha
Thank you so much!! This was a fun video!
I don't see this theory about Apple licensing Gemini for their purposes to be even remotely believable. In case anyone missed it, Apple hired Google's head of A.I. (John Giannandrea) years ago. And even though they haven't done anything obviously visible in A.I. yet, you can bet they've been working on it.
At the very least it shows how much fear OpenAI and Anthropic has struck in Apple and Google. And rightfully so - they are miles behind.
And if anything, it most likely cements this view. Neither of them will really get any stronger.
There was some speculation that Apple might also be talking to Anthropic. Not gonna lie, I'd be much more excited about Claude and Siri getting married!
@@TheoreticallyMedia Oh, now we talking!
I call it 'GemS'
obviously you need a spectrum of people for training AI, not just sheeps.
Haha. Solid burn!
so you are saying , soon you will just drop the camer and start tyle text
Haha, not on this channel. But I might open a second channel to experiment with it? For this channel it will always 100% be me, though!
we dont know after you start :) @@TheoreticallyMedia
6:45 I feel like Hey Gen still looks better than this?
I need to swing back over to HeyGen-- have they captured gestures and movements better recently? That, I think is the real step forward with this model.
@@TheoreticallyMedia True, Argil probably does this better. But I always look at the lips, and I've not seen anything better than HeyGen yet.
@@KolTregaskes oh, I gotta say, the lip flap (esp on the Zuck one) wasn't particulaly great. Next time I'm testing one of these, I might try out some Film Noir/Heavy Shadow shots, just to see if that "plays" better...Been curious about that.
6:25
Gemini is so broken. 🤭 It can't answer anything right
They said...
Apple lags behind in AI because it requires massive compute resources to train and...
Apple hardware is very expensive that they cannot finance it 😂😂😂
Haha! The Apple Tax hit Apple!
Haha, maybe they can finance it with the Apple Card! I’ll talk to the 16 year old kid at the Apple Store about this today!
google is paying apple to stay on theyre phones insted of chnaging it to bing you said it as if apple is the way paying
Well, AI is a general term that could as well be used to describe rules-based AI that has been around for decades. The AI we are talking about today is better characterised as the more specific Machine Learning. And since a lot of people (especially artists) think Generative AI still works like rules-based AI and based on that jump to false conclusions about copyright/plagiarism, it would be best if we all would talk about Machine Learning instead of Artificial Intelligence. Unfortunately, Apple seems to have caved to the masses for whom this distinction flies over their head.
I totally agree with you, but-- in this case, I think it was a bit of Apple Hubris (and I say that as I type on a Macbook) where they thought themselves above the AI-Hype/News Cycle. Cook's steadfast refusal to say AI almost felt combative at one point.
I do wonder how Jobs would have handled it. I could see that going either way-- either he'd lean into it, or he'd still be insisting its ML...Never know with that guy.
@@TheoreticallyMediaI think the difference is - if Steve Jobs had pushed Machine Learning as the term to use, everybody would emulate him. Tim Cook simply lacks the charisma and status Steve Jobs had, so if he tries to push something like that, he appears more like a petulent child than a visionary thought leader.
There’s no more innovation at Apple. They are not doing anything special, just iterating devices. The headset is not even innovative. Just an over-priced VR headset that will not make it to the mass market.
Fair criticism that has been levied since the passing of Jobs. It really goes to show how that dude (despite his flaws) really was a visionary.
I think Apple is right when call it Machine Learning (ML) rather than AI, for now folk think things with to much intelligence for some reason want to kill the humanity for no other reason than no reason. If we call it ML we know it is still just a machine and a way to sort information we give it, so I hope Apple can push that idea over to Google and folk then start to use the correct term rather than repeat what they did hear on Internet.
Not excited about this. Google potentially pushing its political ideology onto Apple products sounds horrible. If I don’t have a way to opt out of this I may have to give up the iPhone. Like that would matter since there’s few options in smartphones.
I'm curious to see if there will be any regulatory action taken against them if this deal comes through. I didn't put it in the report, but eyebrows have already been raised over the 19 Billion Google is currently paying Apple.
I smell an antitrust suit coming on!
Great, so now my iPhone will be racist, too?
Haha, that was a solid burn right there.
The Argil dude spouts all this flowery stuff about embracing technology and how that will lead to a better future, and their product is...an AI that can impersonate people. Yes, the future will be so much better when we can't differentiate between human and AI.
To be fair, the Argil dude was prompted to say those things. I tend to think no matter how good the AI Avatars get, we'll always be able to tell. Just something in the uncanny valley-- much like, no matter how good video game graphics or CGI in films get-- you can always sort of see it.
@@TheoreticallyMedia He was 'prompted'. I see what you did there. Was this person involved in Argil or just a demo? I agree on the uncanny valley, but it's early. Maybe I need to watch the entire clip for context
very sexy man TIm Cook
Haha, I'll FWD that along to him! I don't know if he gets that compliment very often, so I'm sure he'd be super stoked to hear it!
It's not that big.
Potential to be big. But that's not as snappy for a UA-cam title. I honesty do think if they corner the mobile AI market, it'll be a big deal. At least in a mainstream sense. Again, think of Uncle Bob, as mentioned in the video.

I have the feeling we aren't going to have a choice. Rather, you'll have the choice of not updating to the latest OS, but eventually your device will be as useful as an iPhone 4.
That said, Apple can be pretty good about opting out...so, hopefully they'll have it available as a slider you can turn off!
very disappointed with this news . All of devices I have are apple because of privacy. With this deal they’re gonna let the coyotes enter the hen house.
I have the feeling they’ll have an opt out switch. I also have the feeling that it won’t be seat to “off” by defult!
