Romania is one of the most complete countries in Europe. In the top 3 probably with France and maybe Italy. A true hidden gem at other prices, low for Westerners. It's the culture, there are the houses in Maramures and not only (the Romanian village), the imperial buildings, monasteries and churches, the mountains and the sea, the DANUBE DELTA that many don't even know in its splendor in Romania. The people are nice and warm, English speakers. Good internet, good food and services. According to Taste Atlas, Romania has the 4th best cuisine in the world. It's a whole of food.

My husband and I are both Romanian, living in US. We enjoyed watching your series on Romania. It reminded us of how beautiful our home country is, and urged us to make plans to a trip there next summer. There are some amazing places to see that are both affordable and comparable to many other countries of Europe. Romanian people are welcoming, and hospitable.

Years ago I saw a Rick Steves PBS travel show where he was in Romania. He was in a cemetery in a small village, and on each tombstone it had a painting of the person showing their occupation, and what happened that caused their death. I remember a couple of them. One showed a TV repairman, and how he got electrocuted while working on the TV. Another showed someone getting knocked off of their bicycle and flying through the air. There was a farmer out in his fields, and it showed a bolt of lightning coming straight down to his head. There was also a lady baking, but forgot how her death occurred. These villagers got creative!

It's a relief to see that the Romanian countryside has hardly changed since I was there on a school trip in 1986 (I think) back in the Ceausescu days. At that time, just about every vehicle was a horse and cart, but otherwise the dark and mysterious air seems to survive alongside the beauty of the villages and towns, and the stunning scenery of forest, mountain and meadow. I wonder if the streets of the villages were empty because they were watching you through the gaps in their shutters, suspicious of the stranger in town. It's definitely Brothers Grimm territory! The fortified church you saw would have been in one of the Saxon colonies that are found in many areas of the country. I almost went back in 1989, but didn't and otherwise have always thought back to it as a most special place. One day I'd love to go back but, until then, I love watching these videos of yours, Gabe.

"Romania feels pure, it's like going back in time in the 20th century" - very true in many places. Romania has one of the highest concentrations of IT specialists per capita in the world, and is in the top 3 or 5 countries with the fastest internet speeds in the world - also very true. That dichotomy right there, is Romania in a nutshell.
Really happy that you are enjoying Romania, Gabriel. I live in Cluj but during summers I work from the mountain home in the Apuseni Mountains, another area which I'm sure you'd love. In the past couple of years I started noticing more and more people from Western Europe visiting the area: British, Belgians, Dutch, Germans, you name it. I also heard they're buying properties by the load, probably while they are still relatively cheap. So definitely westerners are starting to envision that idyllic life in the Transylvanian country side that you were talking about.

Beautiful locale I always love to see pine trees and love the smell of pine trees. You even see echinacea (cone flowers) incredibly beautiful. The small construction with a cross inside and painted with biblical scenes is called "troiță".
They are placed at road intersections and have the role of protecting the traveler. (haha, one like you!)
They are called triplets - troiță (from the word three) because when you make the sign of the cross during a prayer you say "in the name of the father (god) of the son (Jesus) and of the holy spirit".
Usually there is also a fountain next to it because the traveler is always thirsty.
    *
That tall conical construction of hay and straw placed around a stick called a "căpiță".
That's how they store the straw over the winter so it doesn't get wet and rot.
It's just hay stacked on top of each other in a conical shape.

    • @dhanyrafael
      @dhanyrafael Рік тому +6

It's cheap and good. Dacia was bought by Renault in 1998, so you have Renault quality in the end. I have a Dacia from 2006 - I drove over 200.000 km and spent only 1000 euros with maintenance. Imagine that a BMW, Audi, Toyota cost at least 1000 per year in service - I payed that cost in over 15 years. 😋 Cheap and good. That's why I prefer Dacia.

I think there could be bears in these forests. I was on a tour to Peles castle and Sinaia mountain in April so our guide had some sort of 'bear alert' on the phone and he was told the bear was spotted on the road we were traveling. They get to pick up food that some people leave or something.

Hello Gabe, I'm a big fan of your videos! I truly appreciate the effort you put into creating engaging content. I wanted to discuss something regarding your references to Transylvania's history and culture. While I thoroughly enjoy your videos, I believe there's an opportunity to enhance your presentation by acknowledging the diverse ethnic contributions that have shaped Transylvania's rich heritage. It might be more accurate and respectful to avoid labeling it solely as "typical Romanian," as this doesn't fully encompass the region's historical and cultural complexity. Highlighting the contributions of various ethnic groups would not only be historically accurate but also promote a more inclusive perspective. Keep up the great work, and thank you for considering this suggestion!

The first village named Cristian, in German "Großau", in Hungarian "Kereszténysziget", in Latin "Insula Christiani" used to be populated half Saxon, half Austrian and the fortified church where you missed the enterence is of course Saxon too. The walls were built to keep foreigners out, which they successfully did also this time. And yes, it is medieval. As you can read at 3:00 the village just celebrated its 800th birthday.
35:25 the old wooden lodges at Paltiniș (German: Hohe Rinne) were built by Saxons as well, before communism. That's why they look different from other mountain resorts, that have Romanian architecture.
