As a French I went to Romania quite a few times because it's really cheap and it's gorgeous ! This country is so underrated, in Western Europe people don't imagine how beautiful this country is.

It’s not really their fault that our roads were bad and we didn’t have enough international airports or comfortable accomodation 20 years ago. Remember, just few years ago how our representative went abroad to an International Tourism Conference or Symposium or Fair (or whatever that was) with a bunch of A4 printed photos attached to a black curtain - and that was the best our Tourism Department managed to do to advertise tourism in Romania. I remember it well, it was a scandal and the images of that delegation went viral on the internet, we were all appalled …

I went to Romania three times, doing development work with their criminal justice agencies. It is a beautiful country with friendly people, who were always happy to share whatever they had. However many of the cities had had their historic centres flattened to provide areas where triumphant parades could be held to celebrate President Ceaușescu. I did try and learn some of the language: because it has the same origins as Romance languages such as French and Spanish, it was quite easy to pick up some vocabulary but the grammar defeated me.
haha yeah, Romanian has similar grammar to German. The theory is way more pompous and convoluted than it needs to be. It's a thousand times harder to learn grammatical theory than to learn to actually use it. I wouldn't bother with it, just go in for the exercises, to get a feel of it
That isn't really true, the vast majority of cities in romania have their historic centers, the only real damage done was in Bucharest and laşi. Laşi isn't great because of it, but bucharest is such a massive city that the vast majority is still the old city, and the new communist era parts are actually far more post-modernist and art Deco than brutalist when it comes to bucharest. I found bucharest to be very similar to new york in that way, but also just far more impressive in the fact that so much ancient architecture was kept. Also I'm pretty sure romania has one of the highest amount of world heritage sites in the world, they have a lot of well preserved cities and towns. Even my Romanian friends would talk trash about their small villages and towns, and when I go to visit them they're more dense and busy than some of the streets in Chicago and New York. There's many areas that were newly built up with commie blocs, and yes while that may not look great, as someone from new york, it looks better than it does here. Plus you realize these are why romania has the highest home ownership rate on the planet. As a new yorker owning an apartment in the city is an absurd idea. At least they have transit and parks and store access. Here those same public housing buildings get Nothing but parking and maybe a subway line.
Romania is one of the most underrated countries to visit. I was there in June, and will come back soon. I recommend Timisoara, Brasov and Sighisoara. I also went into the forest by myself, and could see a wolf and some bears. Connor; You have to look into eastern (well, central) europe more!! Poland and Hungary is beautiful!!
@@flaviu777then you don’t know Hungary at all, beside Budapest there is also Pécs with the Christian necropolis, Fertö lake, Balaton lake, Hortobágy National Park, Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, Hollóko village, Tokaj wine region, Castle of Esztergom, The caves and karts in Budapest, Ipolytartnóc Fossils natural conservation area, Ödön Lechner’s works in Hungary like the Museum of Applied Arts or Szent László Church in Kőbánya, the city of Esztergom and Visegrad, Upper Tisza-Region with the wooden churches similar to Maramures… there are tons of things to see in Hungary!

My wife is Romanian and of course I've been there several times.She comes from Baia Mare which is in the county of Maramures which shares a border with Ukraine. Romania is a very beautiful country and underrated. It doesn't only have breathtaking scenery and castles as shown in the short documentary. It is the home to several excellent universities, in Cluj and Timișoara. Romanians themselves are very friendly despite the bad reputation some have in the West. Actually I've found that generally, people in Eastern Europe (Poland, Bulgaria and Russia)on the whole, friendlier than those in the West. Romania has 2 big problems tho' ...infrastructure (getting from A to B is not that easy, also the condition of the roads). and high political corruption . One interesting theme tho is Transylvanian Saxon, a native German dialect of the Transylvanian Saxons, an ethnic German minority group from Transylvania in central Romania, and is also one of the three oldest ethnic German and German-speaking groups of the German diaspora in Central and Eastern Europe. For example ,the city Cluj-Napoca in Transylvanian Saxon is "Klausenburg", Baia Mare is "Frauenbach" etc. The language is an Eastern Romance language, this makes it easier (regarding the basics) to learn compared to Hungarian, however the difficulties come later. Oh..it also has the 9th fastest Internet (260.97 Mbps) in the world...and BitDefender. Vă sfătuiesc să vizitați România!
I’m from Baia Mare, that’s why I was talking about Maramures above, I had the first hand experience of autumns there . 🙂 The Saxons you’re talking about have left the country and moved to West Germany in proportion of about 85% or more about 35-40 years ago and even after the 1989 Revolution when they stopped being traded by Ceausescu for money. In Maramureș we didn’t have Saxons, we had Schwabs, (my husband was one of them) they were brought there by the Austro-Hungarian “Empire” only 300 years ago. By that time, the Saxons in the south of Transylvania in Brașov , Sibiu, Sighișoara etc were there for 500 years already. They are not the reason why Baia Mare is Called Frauenbach (that is the literal translation of its original Latin name, Rivulus Dominarum = Ladies River) but due to the fact that all localities under Austro-Hungarian occupation had to have the names in German, the official language of Austria and in Hungarian, the official language of Hungary. Hungary was occupied by Austria the same way as Czechia or Slovakia or Serbia or any other country but they had a few armed uprisings trying to destabilise the Austrian empire and they ended up offering peace if they were taken as partner of decision in the politics of the Empire, that’s how the Austrian empire became Austro-Hungarian, it wasn’t so from the beginning. The Latin or Romanian names of the localities didn’t count to the occupants and were not even written on panels at the entry or exit from those localities by the Austro-Hungarian authorities, they were only orally preserved by the native Romanian population. That’s why today so many localities have their names written in 3 languages, for the benefit of the local ethnic minorities and for their descendants that today live abroad but return as tourists occasionally.

They had to leave their footwear at the gates of the city, so once inside of any township or city they could be easily singled out …and they were allowed in there only once a week when it was market day or if they had a legal issue at the courts. I am Portuguese and trying to learn Romanian and I can definitely understand some Romanian!!! So many Portuguese words, expressions, and language phrases together with Romanian!!! These words are only exclusively found between Portuguese and Romanian!!! It doesn’t exist in Spanish ( which has little similarities by the way), Italian, or French! Just Portuguese and Romanian! Even our pronunciation of Latin are highly similar to each other in Portuguese ( from Portugal) with Romanian!!! Just incredible!!! Portuguese: Nos somos Latinos formosos! Romanian: Noi suntem frumoși Lătin! PORTUGUESE: Eu falo pouco Romeno mas entendo :). Romană : Eu vorbesc puțin dar eu înțeleg ! 😂😂😂😂
Yes it is! Romanian is a Romance language! I am Portuguese and I can understand Romanian a lot! I am learning the language a little bit at the time and Romanian does sound like ( European) Portuguese) does “Peles Castle mean “ Skin Castle” ? In Portuguese you say “ Castelo 🏰 de Pele” and in Portuguese to plural the nouns you add an “s”. So you say “ Peles” means “Skins.”

The cool thing about the Black Sea is that it has the oldest, best preserved shipwrecks in the world (the oldest being about 2500 years old), due to the fact that below a certain depth it's anoxic. Which, of course, offers unique insight to historians, some of the ships being the only of their kind preserved to this day.

Hello, McAmerican from England! :P Romanian here. 1. We have all 4 seasons, albeit shortened these last years a bit, because of climate changes. Want to see sun, rain, leaves changing or snow - just go outside is how it works here. Lots of green places, lakes, rivers, a salt water Black Sea, forests, underground salt mines and glaciers, mountains to hike or snowboard/ski on. USA has all those too, except a sea. Ocean is bigger, though. 2. We have the closest Romance language to Latin, especially in grammar. Romanian is basically Neo-Latin with loans of words from all the people that raided, traded or tried to conquer Us. 3. Food is delicious, simple, hearty, healthy, organic, most people here own an apartment and another house in the countryside with a farm and grow their own stuff. And, of course, make their own tasty wines and brandy from all the fruits you can imagine. 4. People are friendly and welcoming and love to share what little or much they have with you. We're are very hard on each other and like to find flaws, but that's a good thing: it helps things improve. Weird thing is, while Romanians, much like other Latins, love to complain, they are really proud people and don't like being slandered. Not that they won't joke about it when you actually do. Our sense of humor is very banter-ish and sometimes dark. We don't get offended easily. We have A LOT of history, been through a lot and that made Romanians have a thicker skin and find witty solutions to obstacles. 5. Stop dying inside and book a flight already! You have the fastest internet and the cheapest in the world here, lots of advantages from the Government for nomad vlog travelers, and 90 days of Visa stay for non EU tourists. Lots to see before they can kick you out, but you can trick it and visit other EU countries for a while and come back for more ;) Noroc! (=Cheers!)
Bran Castle - thats one high-tech castle. Was built in the 14th century but has plumbing and hot water installation. It even has a water collection system from the rain water from the roof. It had heated showers and toilets. In the freaking 14th century.
A little disappointed about this top 10. As a Romanian I never imagined a top 10 places to visit would ever skip the Danube Delta. Even if I live in Transylvania and there is plenty to see here, the Danube Delta still remains (imho) the best place to visit here. I would also add as honorable mentions: the historical region of Maramures (not the entire present day county) with the wooden churches and the merry cemetery at Sapanta; the whole area where the Danube enters the Romanian territory; monasteries in Northern Moldavia (if you like this kind of sightseeing); the city of Cluj-Napoca, all the fortified churches in Transylvania (although the one in Biertan might be the coolest looking one). I just noticed I am biased as I was born and lived my entire life in Transylvania, but someone else should add to this list here. Cheers
As a Portuguese speaking, I can’t believe the commentator said Romance languages, “Portuguese PROBABLY ????” First of all that is very offensive because Portuguese language is older than Spanish by 400 years! Portugal was established in the year 1139 on the Iberian Peninsula as one of the most oldest nations in Europe, who’s first king designed his own government and national boarders way ahead of Spain and Italy!!! Of course PORTUGUESE IS A LATIN LANGUAGE!!! It has a lot of common words, sentences, phrases the same with pronunciation it’s brother languages of Spanish ( Portuguese twin brother language by the way!), Italian, French, and ROMANIAN!!! As a Portuguese speaking person is learning Romanian and I find it interesting that both our languages are STILL MUTUALLY INTELLIGIBLE!!!! Romanian has so many words, ideas, expressions, and sentences that are exclusively PORTUGUESE!!!! Some of their words appear in high quantity in Portuguese, Portuguese: Eu sou vs. Romanian: Eu sunt Portuguese: doer vs. Romanian: doare ( pain) Portuguese : Meu dor vs. Romanian: Meu dor Portuguese: formosa vs. Frumoasa ( beautiful) Portuguese: ajudar vs. Romanian: ajutor ( help) Portuguese: arranjar vs. Romanian: aranjat (fix) Portuguese: Tu fostes vs. Romanian: Eu foste ( these are exclusively Portuguese word that you don’t find in Spanish, French, nor Italian!!! Just only between Portuguese and Romanian!!! And so much more! I am fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, intermediate French and Italian! I can comprehend all these languages mostly 90 to 100 percent of the time! I am in the mist of learning Romanian as well and I find this language fascinating 🧐 to me! Since I am Portuguese, I can now understand some Romanian ( hardest Latin language ever !!!) We are thousands of miles apart but we still come together in our languages!!! Yep, been to all of them, since I was born in Transylvania. They're gorgeous by themselves, but the landscape and nature are even more beautiful. I would visit either in spring, when everything is blooming, or in the fall
As a romanian i can say i visited a lot of castles from my country and I can say they look so majesting when u see them in person, Also I recommend u visit the fortress of Suceava even just in photos it looks so beautiful
In fact the Carpathian mountains in the fall are best to visit, not only the foliage became red and gold but in many places there is a phenomenon like temperature inversion and became more warmer and nice to visit. The waters of Black Sea are less salted than of Mediterranean, but that also produced stratification of water at various debts (the salted water from Mediterranean descend at lower layers!) and for that there is no life at deeper layers sector where there is hydrogen sulfide. The bonus is that because of no life at the bottom of that sea, there are the best preserved shipwrecks from old times.

It consists of that section of the Carpathian Mountain arc from the Prahova River Valley ( east ) to the gap in which flow the Timis and Cerna rivers…..end quote. If Google is wrong, you should inform them.
I m a romanian and I ve never heard of the 'Transylvanian Alps' before. I can see on google search is actually a thing but I guess is just like a nickname, same like Bucharest being called The Little Paris between the world wars did not mean it actually was part of Paris or anything like that, and I know you did not mean that Transylvanian Alps would be part of alps but just thought maybe I should mention it. When I was in school in Romania we learned this subgroup of The Carpathian Mountains is called The Meridional Carpathians which it just means The Southern Carpathians, and they re just a group of the Carpathian Mountains, and the Leaota and Parang Mountains you mentioned are a subdivision of same group called The Meridional Carpathians, in fact almost all the mountains in Romania are simply Carpathian Mountains with their subgroups, with only exception being the Dobrogea Mountains, near the Black Sea. Long Story Short: when you mention the Carpathian as being one of the 10 or more ranges that includes all the others you mentioned after as they all divisions of the Carpathian Mountains.

The mountains are called the Carpathian Mountains and they are not connected to the Alps at all...the Carpathians are a different range of mountains. T Thank you for being interested in my country! Also there are many many more beautiful things to see, sights, cities, villages, castles, let's not forget the Danube Delta..etc ...
As a Romanian, I disagree with both statements sorry. Bucharest is better during the summer and spring (great festivals, closed streets that turn into urban promenades, amazing vibes) not so great in winter. Brasov is amazing in any season tho. Trains are probably our national embarrassment!. Ask any Romanian and will tell you the same. CFR which is the company that operates all of our train stations and the biggest train company in RO (state-owned) is the reason for it. Romania has developed quite a lot, but our trains and train infrastructure are well behind, on par with Serbia and worse than Hungary unfortunately despite the economy overtaking both countries.

The Black Sea is a meromictic sea (the largest body of water of this kind), where brackish water stays atop, and salty water (in this case very salty and toxic) stays at the bottom. In this case, fresh water and the salts brought by the great rivers plus evaporation keeps the water brackish down to 200 meters or so, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea trough the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straights. And then the lack of up and down currents allows the very salted water of the Mediterranean to flow underneath and to accumulate under the brackish layer, from 200 meters down to 2000 meters deep. There the water has a high concentration in salt and hydrogen sulfide, which preserves many forms of biological matter, such as ancient ships and members of the biosphere. Few living things can survive there (much of them are anaerobic bacteria) but most of them are preserved.
Corvin Castle, I have been there 3 times already and i love it. Is my favourite in my country mostly because is not a comercial castle. Is quartet and beautiful out there and the view from the towers is amazing and the whole castle looks like is straight out of a fairytale. ❤❤❤ Hope you will get here is an amazing country. 🤗
The Black Sea isn't as salty as the Mediterranean, but that's not the cool part. The Black Sea has layers of water that do not mix. Below 200 m. (650 ft.) there is a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) making it an anoxic environment suitable only for certain types of bacteria. There's basically no life below that depth. The Carpathians are about the same age as Alps (same orogeny). There's another group of much older mountains just east of Black Sea. These are called the Măcin Mountains, and they have been eroded to the point that the highest peak is around 450 m (1500 ft). As for the places, Bran is lovely, especially in the spring (the area, not the castle itself). I wouldn't recommend Mamaia (it's too touristy for my taste).

I'm Romanian and I visited some of these places, but not all. Funny or not, I visited more places outside of Romania (I travel each year to a different country, mostly European though). Romania is on par with most of the other countries, at least from a natural beauty point on view.
Have you ever been to Portugal? I am Portuguese-American and I am fluent in Portuguese. I find it fascinating that Romanian shares so many similarities with Portuguese with words that doesn’t exist in Spanish, French, nor Italian. Only words and phrasal expressions between Portuguese and Romanian! ❤

As a Romanian I can tell you for sure that what you see in this video is only a small part of beautiful Romania, you have much more to see, much more places that it not talking, the Danube Delta, the Bucovina region, Moldova region (part of Romania, not Moldavian Republic - that was a part of Moldova region of Romania and was taken by f... Russians Stalin with a lot of other territories that are still captive in the f... Ukraine), there is much, much more to see, you never imagine what a GEM is Romania in European Union, how unique we are, we are spoke a romance language, but not with slavic as you wrong believe, but we spoke a pure latin language... Even if we speak a latin language we have some influences from a lot of invasions starting with Romans Empire (we are DACS as root), after them we have to fight with Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germans, Russians and a lot of others even so, we preserved our root, Romania in fact was meant to be named DACIA in 1868 but was not accepted by the bigger powers of Europe of that time because it will recognize our history continuity on this lands lond time before a lot of well known European country's more than 2500 years of history here... I definitely can understand most of the time Italian and I took French for 10 years! So all these Latin languages does help me have a more clearer understanding of the Romanian language! I have been to Bran castle many times. As a child, my parents would send me, from Bucharest, to summer camp in the area of Bran and my brother and I would climb up the long way so as not to be seen and sneak in the castle in between tourists. Then we would go to the nearest recycle bin and steal the special slip-ons for our shoes so we don't scratch the floors. Plus it made us look legit, even though we didn't pay for them. Oh....to be a kid again going to camp in Transylvania.
Me and my wife are on a castle tour across Europe and I gotta say, nothings beats Eastern Europe when it comes to castles. Sadly, there is a huge number of them that are destroyed and not taken care of. Most of the castles in Romania are under the financial investment and protection of King Charles to which I owe all my thanks for taking care of our heritage.

@McJibbin, come visit, it`s waaaay cheaper then the US :) anyone should visit honestly, there is something for everyone: amazing stuff to see, nature, night life, amazing food influenced by many cultures. Chose a spot on the map and you should find many places to stay and also visiting packages online to visit castles, I searched for a colleague from work visiting from Kuala Lumpur, and there are 1 or 2 day trips by car and a guide from Bucharest for example. By the way, most of us speak 2-3 languages, some english, some french, some german, etc.

In Romania, at least at my school, (Timişoara) we had tours organized to visit these places(paid by the parents ofc), all i can say is that as a kid i was scared shitless of them, narrow and tall corridors and massive rooms, and the humidity and temperature inside of them (can be 40c outside, inside its 10c) makes me understand why almost everyone that visits feels chills running down their spine.

It's a very nice video of our country. There's more to it that showed here. For example, the tallest wooden churches in the world are in Maramures. Another place that is extremely beautiful and unique is Bucovina, in the north-east of the country, where you can see the Bucovinian painted Orthodox monasteries which have their exterior walls painted and not just the interior. One of these, Voronet, has a unique paint color called Voronet blue, that you can only find there. The Danube Delta is one of the most unique European ecosystems, and one of the best preserved river deltas in the world. Tens of thousands of species of plants and animals live there. There's a king Decebal statue somewhere in the Danube Gorges, right on the banks of the river, which would remind you of the statues of Gondor kings from the Lord of the Rings movie, except this one actually exists. And of course more churches and monasteries and castles, too many to enumerate. Come visit, it's fairly cheap compared to Western Europe, and I don't think you'd regret it. 😃 And to answer one of your questions: the Black Sea has a salinity of about half of that of the Mediterranean Sea: 17.3 parts in a thousand for the Black Sea, compared to 36 parts in a thousand for the Mediterranean. As you correctly guessed, it's because of the huge flow of fresh water from the major rivers, such as the Danube, Dnieper, Dniester, Bug and Don, these being some of Europe's biggest rivers, combined with the fact the Black Sea only communicates with the World Ocean through the choke point of the Turkish Straits. 😃 As for another question, yes the foliage goes through the kaleidoscope of colors, just like New England. It's not surprising, since we're on roughly the same latitude too. The autumn color transition among trees is common in most of Romanian forests. I can speak for the forests of Transylvania which I see always. Excepting coniferous forests which are green all-year round, it's similar to what you have in New England, but it usually starts after the middle of August and it ends around November-December. It's always nice to see a tree in vibrant green color, another one in pale green, one in yellow, one in orange, one in red and towards the end of autumn in light or dark brown, while you drive along the Transylvanian forests. After November, the forests can be depending on weather either dark, empty forests with twisted branches exposed to elements or white, glittering forests, covered in rime ice (most beautiful) or snow.

Yes the colours are beautiful when the season are changing. We have 4 seasons: Summer, Spring, Fall, Winter. ❤ Black Sea is a sallty water. But in Danube Delta is fresh water because they build a damm , long story. 😂❤

19:31 Yes, an autumn sunny day in Romania from September till the end of November will display the most gorgeous mixture of yellow-orange-red-maroon and mixed with the permanent green of the pine-trees and I could recommend for that experience a particular region up North at the border with Ukraine called MARAMUREȘ (try pronouncing like it would be spelled rather “muramooresh”) because that region (that’s actually a county with that name) is all hills and mountains covered by forests (and few orchards) and where the sky appears intensely blue by contrast. They also have there the Merry Cemetery and specific villages different than in the rest of the country, where the churches and monasteries are made entirely of wood, roofs included.
I had a great time in Brasov. It was just after the revolution so there were bullet holes everywhere. However it was winter and the snow was perfect for skiing. The food was a bit suspect, I’m sure the burgers were rat (very tasty). Went to Bran Castle and made sure all my pictures were black and white (long before digital photography). Very spooky place.

There is no link between Dracula and Vlad the Impaler, Dracula is 100% fiction. And Vlad's castle is Poenari Castle, now it's just a ruin but it's in a spot that would make life very difficult for any attackers so it's quite cool that way.
We got software development offices in Germany and Romania and we love both places: great engineers, easy to get along with, romanians more friendly than germans though, superb scenery.
as someone who visited all of my country can say you would heed a few months at least to visit all of the historical attractions and natural attractions (caves, waterfalls,etc)
7:38 I guess that would be because this cities were built hundred of years before the invention of cars, and if you went back 400-500 years ago this would be the town markets were people would meet to exchange goods, so would usually be in the centre of the town. In some towns this area does not exist anymore as roads were built ater on top but in alot of towns it has been preserved and that s why this walking car free areas do exist in some european towns, and I m sure this is not an european only thing, I m sure same can be found in Asia as well.

In your film you can see a total of 15% of the beauty and the things that represent Romania. To get to know the real Romania you have to live there for a few years. I have personally been to most European countries, and I can tell you with complete confidence that Romania is the most beautiful country in all of Europe. I lived 5 years in Romania, and I can tell you that you were not in the right places and not in the right restaurants. I personally was at the summit of the Carpathians at the beginning of autumn, and I saw 17 shades of forest, I just stood for 4 hours and could not take my eyes off the breathtaking view I saw there. In northern Romania you Sipping wine number one in the world!!! Or homemade alcohol that the villagers make themselves and makes your love life reach 200% and all this without a headache the next day. In the winter I visited a ski resort with my friends for a week. At night it was -15 degrees outside and it was snowing slowly As if it were feathers, and the moon would reflect and illuminate the ski resort and the forest next to it and would give you the feeling as if you were in the fairy forest from one of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. What is true in your story is that Romania is a country with a lot of corruption, bad road infrastructure and it got a bad name in the West Because of the stupidity of the West and a lot of gossip coming especially from the Hungarians who are really very jealous of the Romanians. My hint is very simple...those who want to see Romania in its entirety should come to it for at least 3 months from the end of September to December...and not contact tourist companies, you should talk to a Romanian who owns a car and is willing to drive you to different places for a little money, places like this that he himself was going to enjoy them.❤

As a French I went to Romania quite a few times because it's really cheap and it's gorgeous ! This country is so underrated, in Western Europe people don't imagine how beautiful this country is.

I went to Romania three times, doing development work with their criminal justice agencies. It is a beautiful country with friendly people, who were always happy to share whatever they had. However many of the cities had had their historic centres flattened to provide areas where triumphant parades could be held to celebrate President Ceaușescu. I did try and learn some of the language: because it has the same origins as Romance languages such as French and Spanish, it was quite easy to pick up some vocabulary but the grammar defeated me.
haha yeah, Romanian has similar grammar to German. The theory is way more pompous and convoluted than it needs to be. It's a thousand times harder to learn grammatical theory than to learn to actually use it. I wouldn't bother with it, just go in for the exercises, to get a feel of it

That isn't really true, the vast majority of cities in romania have their historic centers, the only real damage done was in Bucharest and laşi. Laşi isn't great because of it, but bucharest is such a massive city that the vast majority is still the old city, and the new communist era parts are actually far more post-modernist and art Deco than brutalist when it comes to bucharest. I found bucharest to be very similar to new york in that way, but also just far more impressive in the fact that so much ancient architecture was kept. Also I'm pretty sure romania has one of the highest amount of world heritage sites in the world, they have a lot of well preserved cities and towns. Even my Romanian friends would talk trash about their small villages and towns, and when I go to visit them they're more dense and busy than some of the streets in Chicago and New York. There's many areas that were newly built up with commie blocs, and yes while that may not look great, as someone from new york, it looks better than it does here. Plus you realize these are why romania has the highest home ownership rate on the planet. As a new yorker owning an apartment in the city is an absurd idea. At least they have transit and parks and store access. Here those same public housing buildings get Nothing but parking and maybe a subway line.

Romania is one of the most underrated countries to visit. I was there in June, and will come back soon. I recommend Timisoara, Brasov and Sighisoara. I also went into the forest by myself, and could see a wolf and some bears. Connor; You have to look into eastern (well, central) europe more!! Poland and Hungary is beautiful!!

@@flaviu777then you don’t know Hungary at all, beside Budapest there is also Pécs with the Christian necropolis, Fertö lake, Balaton lake, Hortobágy National Park, Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, Hollóko village, Tokaj wine region, Castle of Esztergom, The caves and karts in Budapest, Ipolytartnóc Fossils natural conservation area, Ödön Lechner’s works in Hungary like the Museum of Applied Arts or Szent László Church in Kőbánya, the city of Esztergom and Visegrad, Upper Tisza-Region with the wooden churches similar to Maramures… there are tons of things to see in Hungary!

My wife is Romanian and of course I've been there several times.She comes from Baia Mare which is in the county of Maramures which shares a border with Ukraine. Romania is a very beautiful country and underrated. It doesn't only have breathtaking scenery and castles as shown in the short documentary. It is the home to several excellent universities, in Cluj and Timișoara. Romanians themselves are very friendly despite the bad reputation some have in the West. Actually I've found that generally, people in Eastern Europe (Poland, Bulgaria and Russia)on the whole, friendlier than those in the West. Romania has 2 big problems tho' ...infrastructure (getting from A to B is not that easy, also the condition of the roads). and high political corruption .
One interesting theme tho is Transylvanian Saxon, a native German dialect of the Transylvanian Saxons, an ethnic German minority group from Transylvania in central Romania, and is also one of the three oldest ethnic German and German-speaking groups of the German diaspora in Central and Eastern Europe. For example ,the city Cluj-Napoca in Transylvanian Saxon is "Klausenburg", Baia Mare is "Frauenbach" etc. The language is an Eastern Romance language, this makes it easier (regarding the basics) to learn compared to Hungarian, however the difficulties come later.

The Saxons you’re talking about have left the country and moved to West Germany in proportion of about 85% or more about 35-40 years ago and even after the 1989 Revolution when they stopped being traded by Ceausescu for money.
In Maramureș we didn’t have Saxons, we had Schwabs, (my husband was one of them) they were brought there by the Austro-Hungarian “Empire” only 300 years ago. By that time, the Saxons in the south of Transylvania in Brașov , Sibiu, Sighișoara etc were there for 500 years already.
They are not the reason why Baia Mare is Called Frauenbach (that is the literal translation of its original Latin name, Rivulus Dominarum = Ladies River) but due to the fact that all localities under Austro-Hungarian occupation had to have the names in German, the official language of Austria and in Hungarian, the official language of Hungary.
Hungary was occupied by Austria the same way as Czechia or Slovakia or Serbia or any other country but they had a few armed uprisings trying to destabilise the Austrian empire and they ended up offering peace if they were taken as partner of decision in the politics of the Empire, that’s how the Austrian empire became Austro-Hungarian, it wasn’t so from the beginning.
The Latin or Romanian names of the localities didn’t count to the occupants and were not even written on panels at the entry or exit from those localities by the Austro-Hungarian authorities, they were only orally preserved by the native Romanian population.
That’s why today so many localities have their names written in 3 languages, for the benefit of the local ethnic minorities and for their descendants that today live abroad but return as tourists occasionally.

I find that rather puzzling and a bit disappointing.
Allow me to share with you some trivia: did you know that the Romanians were not allowed to enter any of the Ziebenbürgen cities wearing any footwear, regardless of their status or season… for few hundred years?
They had to leave their footwear at the gates of the city, so once inside of any township or city they could be easily singled out …and they were allowed in there only once a week when it was market day or if they had a legal issue at the courts.
It didn’t matter if they were priests or teachers or the mayor of a village, they had to leave their footwear at the gates of the city…women and children as well .

I am Portuguese and trying to learn Romanian and I can definitely understand some Romanian!!! So many Portuguese words, expressions, and language phrases together with Romanian!!! These words are only exclusively found between Portuguese and Romanian!!! It doesn’t exist in Spanish ( which has little similarities by the way), Italian, or French! Just Portuguese and Romanian! Even our pronunciation of Latin are highly similar to each other in Portuguese ( from Portugal) with Romanian!!! Just incredible!!!

I am learning the language a little bit at the time and Romanian does sound like ( European) Portuguese) does “Peles Castle mean “ Skin Castle” ? In Portuguese you say “ Castelo 🏰 de Pele” and in Portuguese to plural the nouns you add an “s”. So you say “ Peles” means “Skins.”

The cool thing about the Black Sea is that it has the oldest, best preserved shipwrecks in the world (the oldest being about 2500 years old), due to the fact that below a certain depth it's anoxic. Which, of course, offers unique insight to historians, some of the ships being the only of their kind preserved to this day.

Hello, McAmerican from England! :P Romanian here. 1. We have all 4 seasons, albeit shortened these last years a bit, because of climate changes. Want to see sun, rain, leaves changing or snow - just go outside is how it works here. Lots of green places, lakes, rivers, a salt water Black Sea, forests, underground salt mines and glaciers, mountains to hike or snowboard/ski on. USA has all those too, except a sea. Ocean is bigger, though. 2. We have the closest Romance language to Latin, especially in grammar. Romanian is basically Neo-Latin with loans of words from all the people that raided, traded or tried to conquer Us. 3. Food is delicious, simple, hearty, healthy, organic, most people here own an apartment and another house in the countryside with a farm and grow their own stuff. And, of course, make their own tasty wines and brandy from all the fruits you can imagine. 4. People are friendly and welcoming and love to share what little or much they have with you. We're are very hard on each other and like to find flaws, but that's a good thing: it helps things improve. Weird thing is, while Romanians, much like other Latins, love to complain, they are really proud people and don't like being slandered. Not that they won't joke about it when you actually do. Our sense of humor is very banter-ish and sometimes dark. We don't get offended easily. We have A LOT of history, been through a lot and that made Romanians have a thicker skin and find witty solutions to obstacles. 5. Stop dying inside and book a flight already! You have the fastest internet and the cheapest in the world here, lots of advantages from the Government for nomad vlog travelers, and 90 days of Visa stay for non EU tourists. Lots to see before they can kick you out, but you can trick it and visit other EU countries for a while and come back for more ;) Noroc! (=Cheers!)

Romania is paradise on earth
Bran Castle - thats one high-tech castle. Was built in the 14th century but has plumbing and hot water installation. It even has a water collection system from the rain water from the roof. It had heated showers and toilets. In the freaking 14th century.
A little disappointed about this top 10. As a Romanian I never imagined a top 10 places to visit would ever skip the Danube Delta. Even if I live in Transylvania and there is plenty to see here, the Danube Delta still remains (imho) the best place to visit here. I would also add as honorable mentions: the historical region of Maramures (not the entire present day county) with the wooden churches and the merry cemetery at Sapanta; the whole area where the Danube enters the Romanian territory; monasteries in Northern Moldavia (if you like this kind of sightseeing); the city of Cluj-Napoca, all the fortified churches in Transylvania (although the one in Biertan might be the coolest looking one). I just noticed I am biased as I was born and lived my entire life in Transylvania, but someone else should add to this list here. Cheers

In fact the Carpathian mountains in the fall are best to visit, not only the foliage became red and gold but in many places there is a phenomenon like temperature inversion and became more warmer and nice to visit.
The waters of Black Sea are less salted than of Mediterranean, but that also produced stratification of water at various debts (the salted water from Mediterranean descend at lower layers!) and for that there is no life at deeper layers sector where there is hydrogen sulfide. The bonus is that because of no life at the bottom of that sea, there are the best preserved shipwrecks from old times.

I m a romanian and I ve never heard of the 'Transylvanian Alps' before. I can see on google search is actually a thing but I guess is just like a nickname, same like Bucharest being called The Little Paris between the world wars did not mean it actually was part of Paris or anything like that, and I know you did not mean that Transylvanian Alps would be part of alps but just thought maybe I should mention it. When I was in school in Romania we learned this subgroup of The Carpathian Mountains is called The Meridional Carpathians which it just means The Southern Carpathians, and they re just a group of the Carpathian Mountains, and the Leaota and Parang Mountains you mentioned are a subdivision of same group called The Meridional Carpathians, in fact almost all the mountains in Romania are simply Carpathian Mountains with their subgroups, with only exception being the Dobrogea Mountains, near the Black Sea. Long Story Short: when you mention the Carpathian as being one of the 10 or more ranges that includes all the others you mentioned after as they all divisions of the Carpathian Mountains.

As a Romanian, I disagree with both statements sorry. Bucharest is better during the summer and spring (great festivals, closed streets that turn into urban promenades, amazing vibes) not so great in winter. Brasov is amazing in any season tho. Trains are probably our national embarrassment!. Ask any Romanian and will tell you the same. CFR which is the company that operates all of our train stations and the biggest train company in RO (state-owned) is the reason for it. Romania has developed quite a lot, but our trains and train infrastructure are well behind, on par with Serbia and worse than Hungary unfortunately despite the economy overtaking both countries.

The Black Sea is a meromictic sea (the largest body of water of this kind), where brackish water stays atop, and salty water (in this case very salty and toxic) stays at the bottom. In this case, fresh water and the salts brought by the great rivers plus evaporation keeps the water brackish down to 200 meters or so, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea trough the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straights. And then the lack of up and down currents allows the very salted water of the Mediterranean to flow underneath and to accumulate under the brackish layer, from 200 meters down to 2000 meters deep. There the water has a high concentration in salt and hydrogen sulfide, which preserves many forms of biological matter, such as ancient ships and members of the biosphere. Few living things can survive there (much of them are anaerobic bacteria) but most of them are preserved.
Corvin Castle, I have been there 3 times already and i love it. Is my favourite in my country mostly because is not a comercial castle. Is quartet and beautiful out there and the view from the towers is amazing and the whole castle looks like is straight out of a fairytale. ❤❤❤ Hope you will get here is an amazing country. 🤗
The Black Sea isn't as salty as the Mediterranean, but that's not the cool part.
The Black Sea has layers of water that do not mix. Below 200 m. (650 ft.) there is a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) making it an anoxic environment suitable only for certain types of bacteria. There's basically no life below that depth.
The Carpathians are about the same age as Alps (same orogeny). There's another group of much older mountains just east of Black Sea. These are called the Măcin Mountains, and they have been eroded to the point that the highest peak is around 450 m (1500 ft).
As for the places, Bran is lovely, especially in the spring (the area, not the castle itself). I wouldn't recommend Mamaia (it's too touristy for my taste).

I'm Romanian and I visited some of these places, but not all. Funny or not, I visited more places outside of Romania (I travel each year to a different country, mostly European though). Romania is on par with most of the other countries, at least from a natural beauty point on view.

As a Romanian I can tell you for sure that what you see in this video is only a small part of beautiful Romania, you have much more to see, much more places that it not talking, the Danube Delta, the Bucovina region, Moldova region (part of Romania, not Moldavian Republic - that was a part of Moldova region of Romania and was taken by f... Russians Stalin with a lot of other territories that are still captive in the f... Ukraine), there is much, much more to see, you never imagine what a GEM is Romania in European Union, how unique we are, we are spoke a romance language, but not with slavic as you wrong believe, but we spoke a pure latin language... Even if we speak a latin language we have some influences from a lot of invasions starting with Romans Empire (we are DACS as root), after them we have to fight with Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germans, Russians and a lot of others even so, we preserved our root, Romania in fact was meant to be named DACIA in 1868 but was not accepted by the bigger powers of Europe of that time because it will recognize our history continuity on this lands lond time before a lot of well known European country's more than 2500 years of history here...

I have been to Bran castle many times. As a child, my parents would send me, from Bucharest, to summer camp in the area of Bran and my brother and I would climb up the long way so as not to be seen and sneak in the castle in between tourists. Then we would go to the nearest recycle bin and steal the special slip-ons for our shoes so we don't scratch the floors. Plus it made us look legit, even though we didn't pay for them. Oh....to be a kid again going to camp in Transylvania.
Me and my wife are on a castle tour across Europe and I gotta say, nothings beats Eastern Europe when it comes to castles. Sadly, there is a huge number of them that are destroyed and not taken care of. Most of the castles in Romania are under the financial investment and protection of King Charles to which I owe all my thanks for taking care of our heritage.
'Most castle in Romania'? - Not really. Other than some buildings he bought in Viscri, the rest is more of a 'marketing' contribution and encouraging the preservation of traditions - which is of course very valuable and we are thankful for. But he has nothing to do with investments in 'most castles of Romania' - you are wrong about that.
@McJibbin, come visit, it`s waaaay cheaper then the US :) anyone should visit honestly, there is something for everyone: amazing stuff to see, nature, night life, amazing food influenced by many cultures. Chose a spot on the map and you should find many places to stay and also visiting packages online to visit castles, I searched for a colleague from work visiting from Kuala Lumpur, and there are 1 or 2 day trips by car and a guide from Bucharest for example. By the way, most of us speak 2-3 languages, some english, some french, some german, etc.

In Romania, at least at my school, (Timişoara) we had tours organized to visit these places(paid by the parents ofc), all i can say is that as a kid i was scared shitless of them, narrow and tall corridors and massive rooms, and the humidity and temperature inside of them (can be 40c outside, inside its 10c) makes me understand why almost everyone that visits feels chills running down their spine.

It's a very nice video of our country. There's more to it that showed here. For example, the tallest wooden churches in the world are in Maramures. Another place that is extremely beautiful and unique is Bucovina, in the north-east of the country, where you can see the Bucovinian painted Orthodox monasteries which have their exterior walls painted and not just the interior. One of these, Voronet, has a unique paint color called Voronet blue, that you can only find there. The Danube Delta is one of the most unique European ecosystems, and one of the best preserved river deltas in the world. Tens of thousands of species of plants and animals live there. There's a king Decebal statue somewhere in the Danube Gorges, right on the banks of the river, which would remind you of the statues of Gondor kings from the Lord of the Rings movie, except this one actually exists. And of course more churches and monasteries and castles, too many to enumerate. Come visit, it's fairly cheap compared to Western Europe, and I don't think you'd regret it. 😃
And to answer one of your questions: the Black Sea has a salinity of about half of that of the Mediterranean Sea: 17.3 parts in a thousand for the Black Sea, compared to 36 parts in a thousand for the Mediterranean. As you correctly guessed, it's because of the huge flow of fresh water from the major rivers, such as the Danube, Dnieper, Dniester, Bug and Don, these being some of Europe's biggest rivers, combined with the fact the Black Sea only communicates with the World Ocean through the choke point of the Turkish Straits. 😃 As for another question, yes the foliage goes through the kaleidoscope of colors, just like New England. It's not surprising, since we're on roughly the same latitude too. For example, Augusta, Maine is at 44.31 degrees North, while Bucharest, Romania is at 44.42 degrees North - so essentially on the same parallel.
Speaking of which, don't hate us too much. 😅 There is a joke, which goes like this: when God created the world, the representatives of each of the peoples of the world lined up to receive some of His gifts, so He gave each one gift that would be theirs for eternity. Thus He made Germans industrious, the French great lovers, the British He gave nobility, to the Japanese - craftsmanship, to the Americans - wealth, and so on. Finally, when the line cleared, the last in line was the representative of the Romanians. God, seeing him, says "oh, my, I forgot about you Romanians. I am sorry, but I don't have any other gift to give, so this is what we're going to do: because I can't give you a trait to further you in the world any longer, I'll make your country a paradise on Earth." 🤣

The autumn color transition among trees is common in most of Romanian forests. I can speak for the forests of Transylvania which I see always. Excepting coniferous forests which are green all-year round, it's similar to what you have in New England, but it usually starts after the middle of August and it ends around November-December. It's always nice to see a tree in vibrant green color, another one in pale green, one in yellow, one in orange, one in red and towards the end of autumn in light or dark brown, while you drive along the Transylvanian forests. After November, the forests can be depending on weather either dark, empty forests with twisted branches exposed to elements or white, glittering forests, covered in rime ice (most beautiful) or snow.

Yes the colours are beautiful when the season are changing. We have 4 seasons: Summer, Spring, Fall, Winter. ❤ Black Sea is a sallty water. But in Danube Delta is fresh water because they build a damm , long story. 😂❤

The Romanian language is the closest language to Old Latin including grammar (except the Italian)

What you probably don't know about Romania and Romanians is that:
1. The religion in Romania is Orthodox Christian.
There are almost 30,000 churches throughout the territory, of which 300 are monasteries.
For example medieval monastery Voroneț (1488) și Sucevița (1581).
These two churches are among the eight the painted churches of Moldavia listed in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
The churches have interior and exterior walls decorated in Byzantine style.
The iconography is strictly in the Byzantine style.
2. The sacred spiritual ortodox centers of the Romanians are in Moldova and Muntenia (in the south of the country), because there are the necropolises of their ancient kings Basarab and Brâncoveanu.
Matei Basarab is buried in the Aronta monastery in 1654 (Muntenia)
There are other holy places in the region of Moldova - Bogdana Monastery (1359-1365) in Suceava where the first five Moldavian kings are buried, also, the Putna Monastery where the great Moldavian king Stephen the Great is buried
3. Romanians are 100% white-skinned.

I advise you to look for other clips about Romania, this one is well made but incomplete, I don't see the Danube Delta or the happy cemetery ( joyful cemetery ), and there are many more that I don't see in the clips on the net

19:31 Yes, an autumn sunny day in Romania from September till the end of November will display the most gorgeous mixture of yellow-orange-red-maroon and mixed with the permanent green of the pine-trees and I could recommend for that experience a particular region up North at the border with Ukraine called MARAMUREȘ (try pronouncing like it would be spelled rather “muramooresh”) because that region (that’s actually a county with that name) is all hills and mountains covered by forests (and few orchards) and where the sky appears intensely blue by contrast.
They also have there the Merry Cemetery and specific villages different than in the rest of the country, where the churches and monasteries are made entirely of wood, roofs included.
I had a great time in Brasov. It was just after the revolution so there were bullet holes everywhere. However it was winter and the snow was perfect for skiing. The food was a bit suspect, I’m sure the burgers were rat (very tasty). Went to Bran Castle and made sure all my pictures were black and white (long before digital photography). Very spooky place.

There is no link between Dracula and Vlad the Impaler, Dracula is 100% fiction. And Vlad's castle is Poenari Castle, now it's just a ruin but it's in a spot that would make life very difficult for any attackers so it's quite cool that way.

7:38 I guess that would be because this cities were built hundred of years before the invention of cars, and if you went back 400-500 years ago this would be the town markets were people would meet to exchange goods, so would usually be in the centre of the town. In some towns this area does not exist anymore as roads were built ater on top but in alot of towns it has been preserved and that s why this walking car free areas do exist in some european towns, and I m sure this is not an european only thing, I m sure same can be found in Asia as well.

you have the best chance against a wolf as they are just wild dogs, but a bear, not so much. Lyncs you can take down only based on luck, as it can be as fragile as a wolf, just more agile, and with claws, but bears can behead you with a paw swipe and AR very tough.
In your film you can see a total of 15% of the beauty and the things that represent Romania. To get to know the real Romania you have to live there for a few years. I have personally been to most European countries, and I can tell you with complete confidence that Romania is the most beautiful country in all of Europe. I lived 5 years in Romania, and I can tell you that you were not in the right places and not in the right restaurants. I personally was at the summit of the Carpathians at the beginning of autumn, and I saw 17 shades of forest, I just stood for 4 hours and could not take my eyes off the breathtaking view I saw there. In northern Romania you Sipping wine number one in the world!!! Or homemade alcohol that the villagers make themselves and makes your love life reach 200% and all this without a headache the next day. In the winter I visited a ski resort with my friends for a week. At night it was -15 degrees outside and it was snowing slowly As if it were feathers, and the moon would reflect and illuminate the ski resort and the forest next to it and would give you the feeling as if you were in the fairy forest from one of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. What is true in your story is that Romania is a country with a lot of corruption, bad road infrastructure and it got a bad name in the West Because of the stupidity of the West and a lot of gossip coming especially from the Hungarians who are really very jealous of the Romanians. My hint is very simple...those who want to see Romania in its entirety should come to it for at least 3 months from the end of September to December...and not contact tourist companies, you should talk to a Romanian who owns a car and is willing to drive you to different places for a little money, places like this that he himself was going to enjoy them.❤
