My father escorted my brother and I onto the USS Enterprise when it arrived in Sydney Harbour, Australia in 1964. I was 11 yrs old at the time. A presentation was made on deck pointing out the the Enterprise was powered by 4 nuclear reactor. Much later on it was revealed there were another 4 nuclear reactors on standby in case there was an unforeseen problem. Also sailors lined the deck, black and white and they looked fantastic, just like the iconic aircraft carrier. Its something I will never forget. Many thanks US Navy
No hablo ingles como es obvio pero dijiste 4 reactores nucleares y tenia 8 no 4
I loved this aircraft carrier very much
She may be old, but she's still bold. The legacy of the name Enterprise is one of honor, service, and sacrifice. From the days of wood and sail when our country was new, to the carrier who bore the number CV-6 and made her mark on world history in the dark days of WWII, to this grand old lady who brought the world into the atomic age and proudly served more than twice her expected lifespan. And although she'll likely suffer the fate of her namesake, and will sadly soon be gone, her memories will live on. She's forever number one, the first CVN and by far the most decorated. And the torch will be passed to CVN-80, the ninth ship to bear the name that is as old as the Navy itself. Even though she'll die, the Big E will continue to stand as a beacon of valor, hope, and grit, as long as her stories are told and remembered. There will never be a US Navy without a ship named Enterprise. Rest now old girl, we have the watch. USS Enterprise CVN-65 1961-2013 "We are Legend" Forever the "First and finest"
A beautiful ship. I salute you. Thanks you all US Navy. So proud of you 👍 and always supporting you. From the heart of an old boat people.
88-92, and 2001-02 Big E. I will always remember you.
I went aboard that vessel when it was in Norfolk, Virginia, for refueling and such. I was about 13 or 14 years old; it was 1968 or 1969. It was amazing to me that humans could build a moving object that large. After a brief tour, I ate dinner aboard (as my uncle was the galley officer in charge of food) and I'm glad to say that our sailors eat very well. It's sad that the Enterprise (which at the time was CVAN-65 ... it's designation changed since then to CVN-65) is finally decommissioned after more than fifty years.
Served on board Enterprise 74-75,76-77 airdale worked on flight deck
Very impressive, fearless, historical and nostalgic indeed. A glorious sight to watch.
I got to take a tour of BigE when she was in Alameda in summer 74. Melted my new shoes on the deck, lol. My single biggest impression from a 9 yr old was the size of the chain links for the anchor. My feeble mind reeled at the how big the anchor must be.
Crew member 85-87 S2 div. Made 2 deployment with her. Magnificent ship! God Bless you Big E.
Served aboard in 1st Div 72 73 great memories! Big E always in my heart!

I had an opportunity to serve as peace keeper in 1973 Saigon South Vietnam. Acquired from officers a nice big E baseball Cap of the CVN 65. I am still very proud of it and displayed for my visitors in my cabinet. But for now hit me quite anew surprise indeed that by decomissioning in 2013 we both went the same time into full state retirement! :)

Awesome ship! . now history it would have made a great museum.
Spent summers in Newport News while this ship was built. My adopted uncle help build those two extension leafs off the front end of the ship.....not sure what they are called or exactly do. My family went to the christening on Sept 24 1960. I was about 9 years old. We lived close to Tidewater Virginia so many trips to ship yard and Norfolk Navel Station.
My grandpa served on the USS Lexington, lady lex.
Thanks a bunch for this. 😇
Yep, all us old sailors miss the big E. No matter what fleet we were in big E was our flagship.
Super ! la vidéo, avec l'activité du personnels sur le pont impressionnant !
Peter Hodges ... That was one of stops when we made Operation Sea Orbit cruise
93-96 Big E. You will be remembered always.
Yes she will.
Her first deployment was the Oct 1962 Cuban Missile Crises! I watched JFK's crises announcement on TV on my parents 1st TV, a Zenith, Black and White TV. I was 10 fixing to turn 11. My Dad had been mobilized to Beaumont, TX with the Naval Reserve.
God Bless America
God Bless your job
Go Navy!!!
I miss her to this very day. Crewmember'82-'85
That is nice
Hello.What a Mighty Great Ship.The USS Enterprise.
Haze grey & underway- she was CVAN-65 during my time in 69

i was on a submarine that pulled into Alameda in late 78 a buddy of mine from bootcamp A school & Nuclear Power School was stationed on her, amazingly they found him and he gave me a tour & then I got him a GREAT steak n fixin's on the Guitarro
Alameda, the former NAVY port. The Big E's home port. It still is in use where refueler ships are located. CV-12 USS Hornet Carrier Museum is there now. I saw the Big E on same dock, other side. I remembered exactly each end of it for length. So to see the Hornet on same dock years later- a perfect example of length difference, Big E Way outsizes Hornet. I also saw the BB-62 USS New Jersey Battleship same day when I saw the Big E. To not even realize it was there and then to turn and see those two forward guns pointing- staring right at me from about 15 feet away, WOW! *** Invited by the Captain of the BIG E for a personal tour ( 2.5 hours )we got to the front Naval yard entrance. My dad asks the guard, "so where do we go?" The Guard says, "you go straight down this street till it ends. Then turn left." That is all he says. So my dad asks, "so where from there?" The guard replies, " oh don't worry, you will see it. " Then walks back into guard room. We go straight down, and make a left. We don't see it. Then I spot it- "THERE IT IS !" It was directly ahead of us. The front left side entirely blocking out the SF side 100%. The guard wasn't joking ! At the furthest end of the last dock on the outside of that dock. Hornet is on the inside east of that dock ( pier ). Google map -satelite view and scroll down and you will see the HORNET. Big E on the bay side. Hornet far north end ( back side-left side )matches up where Big E back end was and Big E about 50% longer to end of dock. Front of Big E ends at where Ferry Point ends at the water, right side or south side. From where Ferry Point cuts and heads downward directly at the bay ( heading toward Big E ) is where I spotted it. Click on the link brings up satelite view
and you then will see the size between the two Carriers. Then come back to this web page !
www.google.com/maps/@37.7735566,-122.3013481,666m/data=!3m1!1e3
If you saw this, pretty interesting to see WW2 Carrier length to a more modern but already not the longest Carrier in length now - by satelite view comparison. Then to think that the FORD is longer. AWESOME. Yes I know it is not where the Big E was suppose to be docked there. It was NOT a scheduled stop. It came back if I remember because of an explosion on deck. No, John McCain wasn't on this Carrier ! I hope you liked the story.

Westpac cruise 1969 RVAH-6 I was on flight deck when the fire stared
Was on Connie, thanks for helping in finding the cause of flight deck fires. Condolences for the shipmates you lost. Our Navy was quick in resolving the FD errors that caused the problem. Welcome home mate so glad you got home.
How much years will take the uss enterprise to the skies

My Dads Nutts glow thanks to the time spent Building the reactor on the Enterprise. as well as 5 Ohio Class SSBN's glad i dont have 3 arms.

Makes our carriers look like life boats.
I wonder if they have harbor pilots in Norfolk.
Nope, they use Boy Scouts for Harbor Pilots.
Is there more journalist in
German uboat U24 managed to get a torpedo on it during JTFEX 01-2 tho. One uboat against a complete carrier strike group
Wow USA navy
Please tell me this like the degaussing button on old computer monitors
Я бы тоже хотел чтобы в России были такие авианосцы.Но этого не будет никогда.
Only deployed 22 times in 50 years. She needs upgrading and put back into service.

Nah.
tom graham - I couldn't believe so few times either. They are always being maintained, partially overhauled, major overhauled, nuclear fueled replaced every 15-20-25 years!
Enterprise was officially decommissioned February 3, 2017, after over 55 years of service, and with the completion of an extensive terminal offload program. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day
I was on the Enterprise the first 2 combat missions in Vietnam 65 66 67
@@robertj.davidson362 they were replaced on CVN-65 every 20 years. Then the newer ones they went to 50 years. The CVN-78 USS Ford I believe is 90 years now.
What happened to the Hornet that was on deck earlier in the video?
Probs went below deck

What's with the flag they lowered. It looked like the U.S. flag without the stars. Is it something that they fly when in port? I'm curious to what it means.
The jack of the United States is a maritime flag representing U.S. nationality, flown on the jackstaff in the bow of U.S. vessels that are moored or anchored. The flag design is "the first Navy Jack" with thirteen red and white stripes and the rattlesnake and motto "Don't tread on me". The Jack is flown only when moored or anchored, while the national Ensign (Flag) is flown at the stern. Upon getting underway, the Jack is lowered and the Ensign is flown from the main mast. This process is referred to as, shifting colors. From September 11 2002 until June 4 2019, Navy ships flew the First Navy Jack. Since June 4 2019, the standard Navy Jack, identical to the canton of the national colors (blue field with 50 white stars) is used. USS Enterprise crew member 1981-1984.

Why don't they give her to other allies country? At least she can get modernised and keep sailing for another 10 years

The most important contribution the Enterprise gave was helping Kirk and his crew get back to the 23rd century.
Unfortunately, now it's just rust destined to be dismantled, they had to make it a museum.
How? Keep in mind it is a 50+ year old Nuclear Powered Ship. It can never be Certified safe for General Public access.
@@curtekstrom6600 The NS Savannah was Nuclear powered and was a museum ship at Patroits Point, S.C. and we toured her. Currently, in Baltimore as a museum ship - ua-cam.com/video/rJXs2bJHUcg/v-deo.html
If I remember correctly their gonna scrap her hull and reuse the steel to make the Gerald R. Ford Enterprise
@@tonytrotta9322 how many Reactors on the Savannah. To remove all Eight (8) Reactors on the Enterprise. Would entail structural integrity to be compromised. There would not be much left.

It's kinda ashame this old carrier is wasting away at Huntington ingalls shipyard in newport news cause the goverment can't find the money to move it to a scapeyard to tear it down
Norm. Panganiban Looked up what you talked about. WOW, could cost up to one eighth of a new one. Let’s pull it to the left coast for the homeless. MAGA- KAG 🇺🇸🖖
@@fenwaypark1725 I know the old enterprise is still sittimg at Huntington ingalls shipyard. I see it everyday when I'm down by the shipyard and the new Kennedy is under construction with plans to build the new ford class carrier the enterprise when the Kennedy is completed which both new carriers is budgeted into the military budget
@@fenwaypark1725 you can't have ppl live on on a old carrier that still has the old nuclear reactors on it and it's not safe due to asbestos still left on the ship 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Norm. Panganiban Easy now. I was being sarcastic. Although every 3rd world disease is coming over the boarder, what’s a little asbestos into the mix. Ha, Rush Limbaugh just came on radio, followed by Hannity and then Mark Levin. Sure miss Quonset Point and then Alameda.
Amazing that the richest Country in the World could not only preserve the greatest US warship USS Enterprise CV-6 but also its predecessor CVN-65?
I fined it even more amazing that the richest Country in the world has such lousy medicare for it"s people. Wow very sad!
CV-6 is on the bottom of the sea - CVN-65 is nuclear powered and not eligible (nor safe) to become a museum ship.
Merle Morrison
B.S. Merle, the Nautilus is nuclear powered and it's a museum. I've toured through it.
answer this: does it still have its reactor - how much would it cost to remove carrier reactors - who would pay for that in these times of reduced budgets?
it's a different world today....
Merle Morrison
I can't say the current state of the reactor because I don't know. However, the U.S. Navy does have a reactor decommissioning program. Yes, it does take couple of years to do, not cheap, and does depend on funding. Moreover, I understand the reactor in the Nautilus museum is still in place.
Just because a ship is nuclear powered doesn't mean the whole ship is contaminated. In fact only a small part of the whole structure would be active. Remember many people had to live and work on these ships, even when the reactors were at full power and not shut down as they currently are.
