@@kristianspencer1978 also today's AMG engines are also handbuilt. Just compared to the old Virage/Vantage V8 it doesn't require an engine out service every 20k miles
I went for a ride in a 2001 Bentley Arnage LWBase, which was insane enough and then I found out how rare it was; it was a Mulliner Park Ward saloon “made to order”. At the time I worked in a school & the father of one of my students was a car collector (not surprising, he was the CFO of G.E in the States) That was one of my dream car experiences :) This is a wonderful upload, love all vintage Clarkson especially!
I think they missed a key bit of context in that part of this segment. It starts with VW> buying Bentley for ~£400m, and BMW> buying Rolls Royce for ~£40m, and then Jeremy saying VW paid £400m and it's full of BMW switch gear. This doesn't make sense to us younger folks because Bentley and RR are separate companies, and they only said that BMW bought RR, so why would the Bentleys that VW had bought have BMW switch gear? I think it's because a while ago RR bought Bentley, so they were basically the same company, just aimed at slightly different buyers. So, when he says that BMW bought RR, that means they also got Bentley, meaning the Bentleys that VW paid so much for did indeed have many BMW-made internal switches. This connection wasn't made clear just based on the clips shown, and it's my best guess as to what Jeremy meant by what he said. If I got something wrong, or if Jeremy just misspoke or something, then feel free to let me know.
Both Bentley and Rolls Royce very quickly reverted to the 6.75 litre engine because the market, particularly in the middle east, just wouldn't buy the little BMW lawnmower engines.
These would be the BMW lawnmower engines that have proven to be bullet-proof? While the 6.75l Rolls engine suffers from: Headgasket failure Camshaft failure Gearbox failure Water-pump failure I have owned both 6.75 & 4.4 versions. I am currently looking into my third Arnage and it will 100% be a 4.4
That's the plate belonging to Rolls-Royce at the time (What we'd call a "factory" or manufacturer's plate in the U.S.). It's on all sorts of RR/B for years. Take a look at factory brochures and photos.
For 470 pounds VW brought the company including buildings, machinery, the Bentley name etc. But I believe Vickers owned the RR name and that is what BMW brought, the name for 40 million.
Cost, as now part of VW they could no longer use the BMW engine and there wasn't anything else available. Even so there were a lot of alterations required under the bonnet to get the old engine to fit. It also added 600 Lbs to the weight and they had a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets, now a £5,000 job !
Interesting that Jeremy talks about how good invest is a 100k$+ Bentley Arnage in 1997. Now in 2022 Doug DeMuro upload a video with title of " Arnage for 30.000$"
Yea but we know today if you have a Bentley, Rolls, etc etc. after they get five or six years on em and start leaking from every seal and fitting possible and needing parts etc etc the parts are either not available or cost as much a the fittings on a space shuttle - maybe more. They quickly become money pits the size of the grand canyon or worst case totally unrepairable when parts become as rare as live dinosaurs, which is what they are now but not quite extinct yet

He is saying BMW fleeced VW because they got rolls for cheap and sold high to VW. At the time the Bentley still had BMW parts before VW swapped the engine out for the old 6.75L
How does one compare a 4 door luxurious car to a two door sports car. To me they are two totally different types cars. I personally don't care about the name of a car I care only what I get for my money. Now I just love the Green label 4.4ltr Arnage over the 6.75ltr model and couldn't care two hoots if one car can go thirty Mph faster than another when I can't even use it. I don't know about you but I am not allowed to brake the speed limit anymore. The police man told me that after he gave me a piece of paper which turned out to be an invoice for many hundreds of dollars. I was lucky, he took 10kph off or I would have been in big trouble. Jeremy Clarkson talks crap and I think he even knows it. But then that his why his show was so successful. He mostly entertains the dreamers. Good luck to him.
600 hp in the nineties was enormous. Never knew AM offered something like that so long ago. Even today 600 and up is supercar territory.
Twin superchargers no less! That's like something a backyard hot-rodder would pull off, not exactly something you'd expect from snooty Aston Martin
But those were na, now it's mostly turbocharged
The v600 was hand built back in the day and the engine was there’s not a Mercedes’ lump like todays vantage model.
@@arunkurian9367 it was twin supercharged

"There is even an automatic available" Little did he know he was only a couple of years away from
Ferrari completely ditching manuals.
I love to watch old Top Gear and am a big fan of Jeremy Clarkson. This is a episode I haven't seen before. Thank you.
7:28 interestingly enough, Bentley was taken over by Volkswagen themselves soon after the Arnage was launched.
Did you miss the start of the video?

Errr, the Silver Seraph always used a 5.4l BMW engine, and all royces have used BMW engines since. But yes, both makes moved to bigger engines.
not true VW stick again with old 6.75 becouse BMW doesn't deliver the 4.4 litre engine. VW at that time don't have any engine for it.

No, only Bentley. RR was just a brand BMW bought, they opened a new factory. Vw brought back the 6.75l RR engine which they then owned
I've never heard Jezza laugh so much on Original Top Gear.
That was a laugh of pain as zees got their icons.
I love cars from the 90's.
This was the Green Label. Had to wait until 2000 for the Red Label with the proper 6 3/4 litre engine.
Forget that Aston exsited, awesome what was vw thinking😂 prefer the proper British built rolls and bentlys 👌
2:38ish looks suspiciously like Harrys Garage route
And Joe Achilles
Why does the sound drop out during the bit about the Aston?
Copyright issues with the background music I'm guessing
Why do Bentleys often have a TU number plate?

40 Million pounds for Rolls Royce. Wow. Then 470 for Bentley. So BMW shafted VW.
For 470 pounds VW brought the company including buildings, machinery, the Bentley name etc. But I believe Vickers owned the RR name and that is what BMW brought, the name for 40 million.
Happier, more wholesome, times
Brilliant 👍🏼
Well done UA-cam guy
Why stroking to 4.4L when M62B44 already was 4.4?
Good one
I'd buy a new Bentley all day long.
Sounds exhausting ;)
good old time
I believe it was better for both companies that they got split with two new owners that hate each other
It was a bitter divorce. Clearly VW was the male as he ended up financially shafted...
This hasn't aged well.
Why did they go back to old pushrod v8?
Cost, as now part of VW they could no longer use the BMW engine and there wasn't anything else available.

Aston looks like a parts bin lash up
Ferrari nice but only for two
I'm sorry, but the rear end of these just doesn't look right on such a car of this type. It looks like it belongs to a Suzuki of the same era.
