The fact is in the soul society arc during Rukia's execution nanao was the only one who was a bit scared and Shunsui was comforting her.....and now we know why she was scared at that time bcuz her mother was also executed in the same way (some people confuse between Yamamoto's spiritual pressure scene....so the moment I'm talking about is before ichigo's arrival when rukia about to be executed in chapter 150)
It also add's depth to Shunsui trying to stop Rukia's execution. Really dope

Fun fact katen is missing only her right eye and the only part of kyokotsu thats visible is her right eye. Great way to show how shunsui split his zanpakuto in two imo.
Remember how senjimarus bankai had lille baro shoot himself by reflecting his attacks? And how pernida died to black sand? (Kurotsuchi translates to black sand) She wove /sealed their fates back then.
She can't change the fates. Gerard and Hashwalt will die from the Auswählen. And Uryu won't die at all at the end of the series.

Few fascinating things to point out:
Shunsui's bankai represents in a way the story of his brother.
Act 1 Sharing of Pain - Nanao's mom shared her curse with his brother
Act 2 Dying of disease - His brother died of a disease
Act 3 Drowning - Represents his endless despair, always having to bear the burdens entrusted to him by others
Act 4 Slitting Throat - Represents the execution of Nanao's mother
Altertnatively I saw someone suggest that it represents the deaths of people important to him and the disease represents Ukitake but I struggle to see anything else there from that angle.
It makes a whole lot more sense why Shunsui stood up against the execution of Rukia - he literally came through that once already.
Also there is a strong implication that the family which took Nanao in was Kyoraku's parents. The man has similiar facial structure and especially the same thick lips.
Oh and a final one - the real life Ise clan only allows women to worship the deities and the sacred treasures of Japan. And amongst those treasures: Yata-no-Kagami, a sacred mirror ;)
dont forget, its a sword set with several gems. its the three imperial treasures in one. which kinda implies that this sword originates from Ameterasu.

That's how I always intrepreted his Bankai, his bankai brings stories of his own life to life in the form of attacks.
having dual Zanpakuto is never a natural occurrence in Bleach.
Shinsui - The influence of Ise clan's Zanpakuto caused his Ohana to give birth to another Zanpakuto to hide the Ise clan's sword.
Ukitake - The influence of having another entity (soul king's right arm) caused him to have 2 Zanpakuto
ichigo - White and old man zangetsu caused him to have 2 Zanpakuto as well

But I believe that the true form of the zanpakuto spirit is a baboon with a snake tail. Which is only 1 spirit/zanpakuto.

If you watched bleach hell verse, there's a scene where vasto lorde ichigo (same as the one fighting ulquiorra) spamming laser-cero in hell to kill the main bad guy after he hurted yuzu, ichigo's sister (watch the film to see how she ended up in hell). The cero literally had good chunks of hell boiling over and the power even escaped into the real world. I guess it's not canon tbf but definetly one of the most overwhelming attacks i've seen in bleach
And the fact it would had probably completely destroyed the entire battlefield had nanao not reflected it

Fun fact, the Zanpakuto Rebellion filler arc debuted the designs of Katen Kyokotsu's spirits far in advance of even TYBW's original run in the manga. While a lot of the details in that filler were later rendered inaccurate (it didn't even have Tensa Zangetsu/Young Yhwach), one detail that proved interesting foreshadowing was that in the arc's denouement, the Kyokotsu Spirit hung around Nanao much more than Shunsui, and then we later learn that she was the holder of Nanao's Zanpakuto all along. I dunno if that was among the details Kubo chose to share with the anime production at the time, or simply a lucky coincidence, but it's interesting either way.

I love Shunsui. My favorite Bleach character. Like Neel said, he's always smiling and acting aloof, but that smile is hiding a lot of pain behind it. He lost his brother, sister in law, thought he lost Lisa, his father figure and mentor, his friend who was like a big sister (Unohana) and the his best friend who's like his brother. Nanao is the only person he has left and he's always looking after his niece.

Nanao's mother emanating "motherly aura" so much when she was laughed. Even when i heard her voice had so much maternal caring.
Remember back when Senjumaru used her bankai? Each of the royal guard "died" in a certain way. Pernida died in black sand. Kurotsuchi translates to black sand. Lille died because his power was reflected back on him and it destroyed him. Senjumaru reflected his bullets back and thats how he died. Just something to keep in mind
Holy shit, that's such a super cool detail, I figured it'd be something like "their worst fear" or something like that, but didn't put it together. Even the other ones make sense now, but better not spoil here. The description of that bankai was something like the fabrics that seal fate, right? So it's kind of a bankai that sees the future and immediately applies their death.

What if in the future in jugo vs Uryu, Uryu transfers the control of Yamamoto's banaki to him and then defeats jugo?

Individuals like Shunsui and ukitake are known to have dual swords with dual spirits since soul society arc however the truth is ichigo is the only one to have dual blades in all of history since his soul consists of two different souls from his birth. His races just puts him on a really exclusive status
Even in his case is weird, because one of the Zangetsus is the hollow that attacked his mother and the other is a manifestation of his quincy powers. Thus far all the dual blades are weird cases where the soul is either somehow split (like Shunsui and to certain extent, Yachiru) or is a case where there are multiple souls involved, like Ichigo and Ukitake
Ichigo's not dual-blade either. It's a sword and a sheath.
also looking at the history of ichigo's parent lineage, his father is one of the oldest and strongest clan, and his mother is a pure quincy and the last bloodline at that...that kinda makes him some kind of a prince born from a wealthy and strongest bloodlines.... hehe

Peak episode!!! The entire visual scape and colouring was phenomenal!!! Lille's owl was creepy and insane, just like the manga!! Lille's trumpete attack was a visual masterpiece and shiro shagisu crowned it off with an extrodinarily splendid OST!! Like I'm sure Lille Barro didn't mind going out to that OST!! Tybw has EASILY the best OST of 2024!!!! And Katen is still the baddest baddie ever!!!
[Tidbits]
- As mentioned before Lille’s Vollstandig design takes obvious visual elements from Seraphim (Biblical angels that act as gods spokesmen). This sort of second evolution is further proof of it, aside from having 8 wings, Seraphims are also often depicted as serpent-like creatures bathed in fire or red. (This isn’t 1 to 1, Kubo throws his own unique spin on it by using white instead of red and adding an owl-like face)
- We learn here about Shunsui's struggle with death and responsibility, which adds to the sense of tragedy we often feel about his character. Even within this arc it happens again, Yamamoto and Jushiro died leaving him with even greater responsibilities. When you think about his actions, his willingness to do whatever is necessary, it makes much more sense now, for him he has to win because he carries those deaths and responsibilities with him as best as he can.
(The concept of him sharing the burden of responsibility instead of taking it on all by himself was impressively expressed through his moment with Nanao)
- Many fans often questioned the Nanao ancestral blade concept, feeling that it’s (understandably) overly convenient, and came completely out of the blue. but, as I’ll express again later, Kubo tends to have lore in mind long before it’s revealed. This is why Nanao wasn’t shown in fights, she doesn’t even have a named Zanpaktou and if you recall her moments in the Soul Society arc, she didn’t even carry a blade with her even when the restrictions were lifted (I.e In a story where the strength of the Zanpaktou is primarily how one's strength is judged, it’s obvious that Kubo not showing hers meant something was being set up. It’s more likely that Lille was made in part to delve into this plotline)
- Sidenote: Additionally Nanao's last name is “Ise” which is likely in reference the famous Ise Shrine in Japan. It’s a landmark with deep historical and religious importance.
- Sidenote 2: It was way back in April of 2007, Chapter 158 that we learn about Shunsui Hairpin and the Kimono from bonus pages in the manga. It’s only of note because many don’t know that Kubo tends to invent characters with tons of lore but he picks and chooses when to reveal it(sometimes he just keeps it tucked claiming “it’s a secret”). The Content covered here happens in chapter 652, a long way away from 158.
- Sidenote 3: Another point to consider is that thus far every OG royal guard member has turned into or was some divine eldritch creature

Not showing Nanao having a Zanpakuto doesn't mean it's a setup for it to be a god-killing one, though.
@@ironclad-m3q Yes and No. Nanao is a lieutenant meaning there would be a reason why she doesn't have or use her Zanpaktou, additionally when paired with the fact the Kubo hinted at details of Shunsui Kimono and Pins during the Soul Society arc means he had the lore in mind. On top of which is her last name "Ise" a famous religious shrine.

@@AnubisVoid Ise, being a name derived from a real-world shrine, is not a setup. Setup must exist in the story. This is more of a hint. Not even a straight hint to Yata no Kagami could be Amaterasu or harvest ritual. Imagine reading a story that never gives characters background. It just expects you to look for real-world references. 😅
I'm not saying there's no setup at all, though. It's just not enough to arrive at that conclusion. There are great setups and foreshadowing in Bleach, not this one.

The thing with the dual Zanpakutō spirits is that none of them are natural. They're all pretty artificial in some way.
Basically there's no such thing as a "dual Zanpakutou".
@brtruev1710 Yep. Ichigo's true Zangetsu is just his Hollow/Shinigami powers. Katen gave birth to Kyokotsu. And Sogyo no Kotowari seems to be an effect of Ukitake becoming Mimihagi's vessel.

Another example is Kazeshini. The true Zanpakutou is the chain, not the blades.

I love that we finally got to see the Pocket Dimension/Subspace that Shunsui accesses when using Kageoni. I've always wondered how much it inspired similar subspaces in other series. Just for one example, was the subspace of Shadow Space accessed by users of Shadow Movement in Tensura inspired by Kageoni's ability? These are things I really want to know.

Kyōkotsu/Okyō is the "daughter" (for lack of better word) of Katen/Ohana created to protect Shinken Hakkyōken (神剣・八鏡剣, Divine Sword, Eight Mirror Sword; Viz "Divine Eight Mirror Sword"). This is why Katen Kyōkotsu manifests as a dual zanpakuto much like Mimihagi's influence caused Ukitake's Sōgyo no Kotowari to manifest as two blades instead of one or Ichigo's Zangetsu having two blades thanks to having two spirits thanks to his unique heritage.

I've always wondered how Shinken Hakkyōken would do against other transcendent beings like Aizen, Ichigo, the Soul King or Yhwach considering how effective it is against Lille, despite the huge power gap that would normally decide such a fight in Bleach, thanks to Shinken Hakkyōken's ability to reflect a god's power back at them.
I've also always wondered why the Ise Clan has a sword that can harm transcendent beings. I've got a good idea why the Shihoin clan has so many divine treasures but why does the Ise Clan? I hope someone asks Kubo this question and he answers in either a new arc in the upcoming continuation of the manga or he answers in a Klub Outside Q&A.

@@sofarsogood8680 You'd think something like that wouldn't be let out of the hands of the Five Great Noble Houses (the ones who usurped and mutilated the Soul King and actually created the Triplet World), likely the Shihoin since they are the Tenshi Heisōban (天賜兵装番, Guard of the Heavenly Gifted Armaments; Viz "Defender of the Realm") and the Caretakers of the Hōgu (宝具, Treasured Tools) and Bugu (武具, Armaments) said to have been bestowed on them by the gods.
Noble families don't just give power to lesser ones without getting more than they are giving in return and the Ise family is never once stated to be mysterious fifth house that we know nothing of.
look up Ise Shrine if you want to see where Nanao's inspiration comes from, also loved how Nanao emotional supported Shunsui by taking that off his shoulders & how Shunsui helped Nanao physically. Also notice how his shikai is childrens games showing his fun surface & his bankai being a dark theatre play that shows his dark side, which I think the ep title "Shadows gone" means Nanao relieved him of his depression

It's weird, scary, creepy, and outer worldly. That's why it's good.
Not anyone can use Nanao's sword, it's power to reflect can only be used by an Ise. It's translated as the 8 mirror sword. Lille is a being of light (hence why things pass through him with his full power active) making a mirror the worst possible match up for him. Also you see with Katen birthing Kyokotsu to hold onto this other zanpakto that spirits forced to house other things split into dual wield swords (like Ukitake with the right hand of the soul king or Ichigo with White/Old Man). The real question is if Shinsui's sword keeps Kyokotsu as another entity now that she isn't holding onto the Shinken Hakkyoken.
Also Nanao's mother through the kimono Shinsui wears held her during when she was doubtful. Her mother, father and uncle all held her up
18:55 WE saw a lot of Zanpakutou spirits "design by Kubo" in the Zanpakutou Rebellion Filler Arc. Katen and Kyokotsu had the same design in this and the manga than in that Filler Arc.
There are a couple hereditary swords owned by the royal family and they are all BAD news. They either eat the user's life force or kill people they love. It's unconfirmed, but Nanao's sword may have been the one made to dismember the Soul King, which would explain why her mother was executed for losing it.
Also, it's theoretically possible to use another person's zanpakuto, but only done very rarely. For example, Tousen's sword was taken off the grave of his friend who was murdered by her husband. It was technically hers, but we don't know just how far along imprinting on it she was (ie. we don't know if she unlocked shikai).

How did nanao's mother die again? Did she suicide?
@@yazid6024 It was explained in the episode. She was sentenced to death by the Central 46 and executed for losing a sacred treasure, the Shinken Hakkyoken, which she gave to Shunsui

Ichigo 's natural zanpakuto spirit was white but Ichigo also accepted the oldman zangetsu as a part of his zanpakuto so resulting in him having dual zanpakuto because as seen in cour 1 Oetsu only approved of white to be his true zanpakuto not oldman zangetsu hence forging only a single zanpakuto out of that hollow asauchi but Ichigo was the one who accepted old man zangetsu and decided not to abandon him just because he is connected to Yhwach therefore He immediately went went to the forge even if the zanpakuto was still hot and incomplete because he was the one who decided to stay with both white and oldman zangetsu ..... Therefore separating the zanpakuto into dual blades for both the spirits residing within him
Kyoraku is always hiding his pain and sadness under his chills, and his Zanpakudo is a reflection on that
That’s why his Bankai is the reflection of the pain and darkness deep inside his heart, (while his Shikai is like playing games
Katen Kyokotsu is started off as 1 sword - Katen (the older lady), Shusui's sister in law asked him to hold onto the ritual sword, to do this, Katen made Kyokotsu "gave birth" (the second sword and the young girl), so now its his got 2 swords. Kyokotsu hid the ritual sword in herself (thats what happened when she drew it out of her head), both swords have manifestation of spirit, Katen is the old lady, Kyokotsu is the young girl with the mask.
Shunsui was told he wouldn't be affected by the curse if he took the Shinken Hakkyoken but that wasn't the case. He lost his mentor in Yamamoto, colleague in Unohana and a friend in Ukitake.
There's also a theory that this sword was used to dismember the Soul King which is why Central 46 was so quick to execute Nanao's mother.
This death ties back to what senjumaru did for the royal guards when she caught them in her bankai… remember how Lille barro died in there? Yeah… this had a precedence from there.

the zanpakuto rebellion arc have a bunch of zanpakuto spirits shown. it was also the first time shunsui's zanpakuto spirit was shown. it may be filler but the designs of those spirits are canon now.

The only one, who have dual zanpaktou is Ichigo. Neither Shunsui or Ukitake have dual zanpaktou. In Shunsuis case he explained it in this episode, in Ukitakes case, he had the second blade, because Mimihagis influence. If you remember the "Blade is me" episode, the last episode in the first season, even Oh-Estus girls are suprised seeing Ichigos dual zanpaktou, since they never seen one. They are the ones, who forge the zanpaktous with Oh-Etsu.

Kubo confirmed quite recently that dual zanpakutou dont happens in "natural" ways, as you can see Ichigo has white and zangetsu as his powers, he's a hibryd of all races, shunsui had that back story, his zanpakuto gave "birth" to a child that like to play hide and seek, so he could keep his promise to keep the divine sword hided and about ukitake we don't get the confirmation yet, but the community thinks that its because the soul king's right hand power, as you can notice all of these scenarios are so unique

For context on Hakkyoken, I'm ninety percent sure it's playing into the shinto concept of Mitama.
Basically, shinto Kami have four "moods" or states that they can fall into, those being Nigi Mitama, Kusi Mitama, Saki Mitama, and Ara Mitama. Of these, the first three are benign but a kami that becomes Ara Mitama is angry and lashes out, causing bad luck and natural disasters around its shrine. Thus, shinto priests will perform exorcisms on kami that have become displeased, confronting and pacifying them so that their anger quells and they return to one of the three benevolent Mitama.
While the Quincy are far more "monotheistic" in regarding Ywhach (whose name may or may not be intended to be a japanese pronunciation of the tetragrammaton) as "The Almighty," the soul reapers are much more aligned with Edo japan and thus much closer to Shinto animism where "gods" are something closer to the people that confronting them like this doesn't really register as blasphemous.
Don’t worry about getting confused and thinking for a moment that Kyokotsu was Nanao’s Zanpakuto. That shot of Kyokotsu behind Nanao was an end-of-chapter cliffhanger back in the day, and EVERYONE thought he meant Kyokotsu was Nanao’s Zanpakuto, and we all spent a week theorizing and discussing…and then the next chapter came out and it turned out that wasn’t the case lol. So it’s definitely a misleading moment.

Not everyone can posses dual vield, its always a special case, 1)Ukitake has double zanpakuto duo to him inheriting reios right arm, 2)Kyoraku developed dual swords by his zanpkauto giving birth to another spirit kyokotsu who hid Ise family zanpakuto, 3)lastly Ichigos true zanpakuto is dual due to him havin quincy and hollow powers which are represented as shinigami power that is zanpakuto.

To explain why Kyokotsu was there holding Shunsui's other sword, its because Katen Kyōkotsu is a duel zanpakuto. It wasnt that Kyōkotsu is her sword. He was calling her because she had the Shinken Hakkyōken and was hiding it. Also notice that Kyoraku said that she likes to play hide and seek. Also a couple things i saw people were confused about before.
Ohana is Katen's nickname that shunsui gave her (it means beautiful while Katen means Heavenly Flower)
Sakuranosuke is Shunsui's middle name.
Then Okyō is Kyokotsu's nickname
